Beware....Fat shaming! Worst experience We called to book our ride and spoke to Theresa. She asked the weight and height of the riders. I told her our height and let her know we needed larger animals as we are bigger girls but did not exceed the 250 weight limit requirement. She assured me she had larger animals and it would be fine. I let her know where we were driving from and she said we were an hour and 1/2 away. Theresa called back after speaking with her manager, shortening our ride in half because the trail is up and down hill. She assured me that there was no issue with riding. After a long journey through the mountains, we arrived ready for a fun day riding. When we got there, Theresa looked at us and said our legs were not long enough. We were taken aback. Upon further questions and discussion it became clear that there was alternative reasoning. Even though we all fell under the weight restrictions, we LOOKED too heavy to ride, then later revealed that the owner was trying to sell and would have concerns. The conversation fell into an awkward silence. We were frustrated, disappointed, and upset. I even suggested not going on the trail just riding around camp but they insisted we could not ride the horses safely, apologized, and turned us away. Theresa went as far as to comment to my girls how hard it is to be too fat then offered us cookies! James overheard the conversation and suggested that we meet the horses. We brushed and pet them, which was very kind of him. I would not recommend taking the drive through the mountains for these folks. There were many alternative riding options in the area. I'd suggest taking your business to a place that's more organized, transparent, and kind. read more

I recently made my first trip up to this pack station and was blown away by how GORGEOUS the scenery is!!! Make sure you remember your bug spray and then you too will love their location -- right on a babbling creek, with green meadows all around, jagged peaks and clear blue sky overhead. The animals look well cared for and they have lots of mules which are such funny creatures! I hope to watch this friendly staff compete in the Bishop Mule Days again next year; 2021 was their inaugural experience but rumor has it they are going to be top contenders over Memorial Day weekend 2022. I live nearby now so I can't wait to go on more Rainbow rides later this summer! read more

We just returned from our long awaited mule packing trip into the Sierra Nevada mountains and I can say it was the most amazing experience! Now, I'm not much of camper, so we planned a one night trip and it was perfect for us. I have always ridden horses over the years so I wasn't sure I wanted to ride a mule. Turns out, I have the utmost respect for their abilities. They are incredible animals! As for the guides, I can't say enough. They were knowledgeable and so professional! We had one member of our group of friends who was somewhat nervous about riding in the terrain and with our guide's reassurance she relaxed and had a great time. Amazing place to forget the stress of City life! We just stayed next door at Parchers lodging and I had a pleasure of purchasing horseback rides for my two children! The staff is extremely kind, patient and careful! We were accomodated on a few different levels : kids age, horse temperament, the time of the ride. Very detailed instruction preceded the ride to provide safety and understanding the basic handling practices when riding the horses. The scenery of the ride is also breathtaking- the creeks, meadows and the mountains are magnificent! We also hot to see the inside of the authentic cabin (now office) that still has a family "branded" fireplace, original furniture and exudes the spirit of the last century!!! I will definitely go back to see the horses, get another ride and say hello to the staff. I am sure it will feel like seeing the old friends! Wow ! I had a great excursion riding a mule at Rainbow Pack Outfitters!! I called to make my reservation, and was asked a ton of questions regarding my prior riding experience, height , weight, etc etc . When I arrived I was greeted by James who had explained my saddle and gear had all been adjusted correctly for my size , and a mule specifically chosen to best accommodate my riding experience . ( or should I say lack of experience) Trent and Mariah are the management team. They were super friendly and professional. The entire staff were very knowledgeable and made sure I was comfortable and safe. The ride was amazing !! The mule they chose for me was named "Loretta " and she took great care of me as we traveled thru some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen. It was truly a wonderful experience from start to finish !! I would highly recommend anyone wanting to have a fantastic riding experience to use this company. I arranged with Rainbow Outfitters Pack Station to do a food resupply drop at Le Conte Canyon Ranger Station on August 31, 2012 for a fee of $600. I left a sealed box containing a $250 iPod and other items with them on August 13. A friend and I were to hike the John Muir Trail from Mt. Whitney to Muir Trail Ranch starting August 16, 2012. Unfortunately, I became ill and had to hike out on August 25, 2012. I called Rainbow to cancel the food resupply drop the next morning. Ruby at Rainbow Outfitters told me that they do not give refunds but they would mail my package back to me within two weeks. It has now been over a month and I have not received my possessions nor did they return any of my phone calls these past two weeks. I finally received a telephone response this week (it's now Oct 2) because of the efforts of Parchers Resort Cabins' staff going to Rainbow Outfitters' office to complain on my behalf. Rainbow Outfitters still have my package and made some vague promises to mail it. I have arranged for a friend leaving for the Sierras today to pick it up since I have no confidence that I would ever receive it otherwise. I am dismayed at how I have been treated. I would never use their services as they have been dishonest and show no integrity. read more

My daughter and I went on a 2 hour horseback ride when we were staying at Parchers this past July. This is a family operation with four daughters who were raised in this very primitive ranch. They showed we their house and told us the story behind the house. I really admire their way of life and really enjoyed them sharing that time with us. My only gripe is that my horse Clyde could not stop eating the wild flowers, we had to stop at least 10 times to get him back on the trail. Next time I will request another horse but we will for sure be back next summer! read more

I have never written a negative review before but I am so unhappy and disappointed with the way this company treated my business that I want to let others know. Last summer I paid a $675.00 DEPOSIT for a $2700.00 trip that I booked for August 2011. Due to weather and snow conditions THEY cancelled my trip and REFUSED to refund my any of my deposit. IF I had cancelled the trip I can see not returning my deposit. BUT, they cancelled. What keeps them from booking trips, taking deposits and cancelling whenever they feel like it. I just don't think it was fair. read more

I schedule Rainbow pack outfitters to re-supply me while doing the JMT in Sept 2016. I paid a $500.00 deposit at the time I place the order in Early August. When the trip got closer I was told that they were having a hard time finding a packer and the animals because of the lateness of the season. They told me they could bring the food and supplies in but not the riders that wanted to come along. Two weeks before the scheduled trip plans changed and we decided we did not need the re-supply and we notified them by e-mail and left a message on Greg's (The owner) personal cell phone. We have left two messages since and e-mailed twice trying to get our deposit back. They have not responded back in any way to our requests. I'm at a loss of what to do. this place is beautiful and the the ride started out fine through the meadows and streams, however the trail changed into a granite rock climb a steep one. there is no listed trail ratings for horse riding trails but i would call this a class four or five river run for horseback riding. if your a veteran rider i recommend it and rent the mules on this trail as they tend to be more sure-footed. mine slipped a few times, i almost fell off and if so i would have been seriously injured on granite rocks. there is nothing in the their Advertising Brochure we got at the hotel that warns about this trail just when you arrived at ranch it just a series of release of liability forms. it's a 35 min drive to the ranch from bishop, if i knew about this kind of trail in the Brochure i would not have made the drive. this trail it is not for inexperienced riders, like my myself nor is it for children or elderly who do not have a Lot of riding experience. riding style hard hats should be mandatory and the guide should have a commercial walkie talkie to communicate back to base in the event of an accident. my tail guide "nick" is a five star trail guide he helped me through this situation. i had to turn around after an hour of a two hour trip. he walk my horse back. the people their are great. this review is just an advisory and a FYI. happy trails to all. thanks again nick for your help. read more
