We are local to Oakhurst with my brother in law and sister in law coming to visit from NJ. They are big horse riding enthusiasts and we decided to try Shaver Stables, having been to Yosemite Stables in Fish Camp and weren't thrilled with the super rocky ride. Great time. I didn't make reservations in time on-line. I called and left a message and received a call back the following morning with an opening. Guide was the sweetest. Peabody, my horse was the sweetest as well. I did the hour ride. If time allowed in my schedule I would have booked the 2 hour ride. Shaver Stables offers a 2 hour ride and it was one of the most enjoyable (if not most) trail rides I've paid for. Our guide, Megan, was excellent and was a gracious hostess. She had the challenge of watching out for a 6 year old girl who had never ridden. And, this girl never spoke a word and was quite timid. I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't detract from my ride experience. We had a wonderful variety of scenery such as meadows filled with blossoms, rocky steeps (both up and down) and beautiful views of the hills and the lake. Megan took our photos when we arrived at Shaver Lake. One of the best aspects of this ride was my horse (Peabody) who had some personality and was exactly what I was hoping for. Great experience!! I used to ride when I was young (a long time ago...) but my kids have never done more that a tied up pony ride at the pumpkin patch. At 6 and 9, they really wanted to ride. Kids 6 and up are able to ride (with a provided helmet under the age of 12). When you make your reservation they ask for height and weight so they can get the saddles ready. There is a strict weight limit of 250 pounds. We showed up for our reservation and got to wander the charming western structure and pet a horse tied nearby. Once the rest of the families arrived, we got the introduction, instructions, and lined up to mount our rides! My kids got Barney and Star- best buddies who were retired circus horses. I rode Jeffery and my MIL got Honey. Paul led our group- a retired sheriff with a ton of horse experience who leads 2 week horseback pack and hunting trips. We rode for an hour with beautiful scenery and interesting stories. The kids loved it and we had a great time! read more

This is our second year using Shaver Stables, and they are simply awesome. Dany was our guide this afternoon, and she went above and beyond to give us A+ service. During our ride, my youngest daughter fainted, and Dany jumped into action and took great care of her. Turns out she is also an LVN! Nice to have such a skilled rider and health professional as our guide. She even went to the lake and filled up her beautiful felt hat with water to help revive my daughter, and we made it back safely. My daughter is relaxing with a milkshake from Hungry Hut now, and doing fine. Both of our visits were A+ service, and the sunset trail is absolutely gorgeous. Couple that with a highly skilled guide like Dany, and you get 5 stars. I highly recommend this business, and will use them every year on vacation. read more

This place is amazing!! I went camping at shaver lake at camp Edison for my 21 birthday and was so happy to find a trail riding company on the lake. What made it even better was how close it was to my campsite! It was a 5 min drive to shaver stables from camp Edison. I have been riding since I was a little kid but it was my boyfriends first time on a horse. He was very nervous at first but his horse apples and our trail guide were both spectacular! Our trail guide made sure to talk to him on the ride to ease his mind and really made the experience awesome. The horses were also great, I rode Handsome and my boyfriend rode Apples. They were very well taken care of and happy. The views were absolutely incredible as well, with the lake being so full we were probably 10 feet away from the water. The meadows were a lush green and we rode through a variety of terrain. Absolutely the best trail riding company I have ever visited, I would give this place a 10 star review if I could! read more

The ride through the woods with views of the lake was breathtaking and so peaceful. We did the one hour ride, but I would love to come back and try some of the other rides and especially the private tour. This place is a legacy! We've been here twice so far and the service provided by Gabi (think she's the owner) has been amazing. Our kids have a blast here riding their well trained horses. Our tour guide Kelly, this time was very friendly, chatted with our kids through the trail but was very respectful to giving us quiet family time just enjoying the magnificent views of the lake and forest. Such an amazing experience for my friends and I. Paul and Kelly guided our tour and they were so sweet! I was at the back so I mostly talked to Kelly for it, but she narrated the ride with showing us the wildflowers along the path and pointing out specific birds. My friend accidentally fell off her horse (she's a first time rider and didn't distribute her weight adequately on a downhill section). Kelly and Paul were very professional and caring, and made sure my friend was okay. They kept us in good spirits when my friend got back on her horse too. Not to mention the view is breathtaking!! This was our second visit to Shaver Stables. The first tine being over 13 years ago. On this visit we such a great experience with our guide Paul and the amazing horses. It was our 10 year old daughters first time riding and she had no problems with their well behaved horses. We took a 2 hour tour through the woods and down to the lake. Just went up for the first ride of the season. Had an amazing time! The horses were great, the views were beautiful and our guide was marvelous. Gabrielle, the owner, communicated with us ahead of time and made the check in super simple. Kendra, our trail leader, was very helpful and friendly.
