To get there, the turnoff road is near Tenaya Lodge by the yellow cottages. When you head out toward Yosemite Trails, you will drive quite a ways on a narrow dirt road. Just keep going, you will eventually see the area of the corral on your right. These people are EXPERTS! They are organized, professional, and have truly streamlined this operation in dealing with a large amount of riders. All your paperwork is taken care of before you mount your horse. The entire group will have a practice in the corral BEFORE heading out on the trail. It is also the time where they check EVERY SINGLE rider for saddle & stirrup fittings. Riding these well trained horses, through woods and stream, is a memorable experience! You do not have to be an experienced rider as they will teach you everything you need to know. All ages young & old rode successfully. I would feel very confident in letting children participate in this. Throughout the trail I watched those in charge, graciously communicate in a variety of situations. I was impressed. From here, you are about 20 minutes to the Wawona hotel. Booked this very last minute and it was my first time horseback riding. Went on November 11th. My horse was Ollie and Ollie was amazing. My instructor/lead, Amy I believe was her name, was very kind and helpful to everyone in the group. Very knowledgeable of the trail and gave very helpful advice. What I can say, it's definitely a fun experience. All the staff were actually very lovely and friendly. I was originally worried about falling off or it being awkward since I went alone. The staff did a great job at explaining and walking us through how to stop and turn and such. But they were also funny and inclusive during the experience. Worst part was the 1 mile drive going towards the parking area because I needed reassurance that I was going the right way as didn't see anymore signage of business name until I reached the location. Booked a last minute trip to Yosemite/Bass Lake and couldn't resist a horseback ride. It's been a few years since I've ridden and while I'm more comfortable in English tack, my horse (Bingo) was very surefooted and confident on the trail. He was blessed with speed but unfortunately we weren't able to take advantage of that- most trail rides are kept to walking speed and don't allow for trot/canter. When checking in, you are. Required to wear a helmet and are provided with a bandana to combat smoke/dust. Take the bandana (or bring your own) as the trails are super dusty- even if you are lead horse behind the guide. While the horses seemed- for lack of a better word- bored, it was very refreshing to be on a trail ride where the horses were not barn sour! I'll keep this place in mind for future visits to the area. read more

I was running late with my family to our reserved time slot but our hosts were so accommodating and even gave a private tour with my group so that the main group wouldn't have to wait. I have gone horseback riding many times in various national parks, Hawaii and along the coasts of California. This by far is one of my favorite rides. The trail takes you through the forest and through several creeks which was really fun. The kids loved it and adults did too. It was truly an adventure. Thank you for the lovely time!!! They only allow the beautiful people with perfect BMI to enter their domain and ride what I can only assume is Shadowfax and his offspring. They require you to put in your stats and check your BMI prior to making a reservation, and you must agree to have it validated on site when you show up for the ride. It denied my reservation because a person in our party didn't meet their beautiful people BMI requirements. So we are all boycotting them, and asking everyone else to do so. If they claim the perfect BMI requirement is for the safety of the horses, that's a bunch of crap. I grew up on a farm with horses, also boarded them, and have seen large, burly men with beer guts plus stacked sacks of feed take a horse out to fill the feed troughs which was a 3-4 hour job. Never once caused a maimed or lame horse, and we took immaculate care of our horses. Maybe other stables don't. It was my idea for us all to go on a ride, now I feel like absolutely terrible because my best friend is now horrified and doesn't want to try another stable. Don't even hesitate! Do yourselves a favor and allow yourself to experience California's breathtaking wilderness on a truly unique excursion, led by amazingly kind and knowledgeable guides. We had booked the 2 hour trail ride in the late afternoon, and it was the perfect amount of time for us. Chloe and Michelle were our guides, and they were AWESOME. I can't stop singing praises about how cool they are - funny, kind, experienced... - people you'd trust your life with while out in the wild. Since it was close to Independence Day, I would bust out singing patriotic songs while riding and Chloe joined in - honestly one of my favorite memories :) They started off by showing us how to communicate with each of our horses, how there was a buddy system between the horses, and how to ride Western Style. The ride was mellow and calm, with slight inclines and declines in the land, but you can do it without any prior riding experience. In addition to guiding us in the beautiful scenery, they'd tell us little facts of the plants, point out scenic views, and give us feedback on our riding position (i.e. if we were tilting and needed readjustment). We also stopped midway to do quick seat checks, and Chloe and Michelle helped take photos of us on our horses. Going on this trail ride with Yosemite trails helped me understand even further how Roosevelt and Muir saw Yosemite's inherent beauty, an epitome of American grace. It's different than hiking the trails near Yosemite Falls or Glacier Point...it's experiencing the land as it was hundreds of years ago, away from crowds and cameras, among beautiful creatures with great company. That should paint the picture for you pretty well :) I've only ridden horses twice before and on relatively flat land, but the mountainous terrain wasn't an issue at all - the horses knew how to navigate it themselves and required very little adjustment (if any). Most other "horseback riding" experiences actually use mules too, so this experience was special in and of itself. It's located really close to the Tenaya Lodge, so if you're staying there, definitely book a ride. We were staying near the north entrance of Yosemite, which is about an hour away, so it was nice to have a pit stop at the Lodge to get snacks before/after. Absolutely worth the "commute" (if you can even call it that...the scenery during the drive was beautiful). We'd definitely go with Yosemite Trails again, especially if we have guests from out-of-state/country. THANK YOU CHLOE, MICHELLE, AND YOSEMITE TRAILS for memories we'll cherish forever! PROTIPS: - They'll hand you a bandana (cowboy scarf) before your ride to wear over your nose and mouth. USE IT. There's a reason why they hand it to you. You don't have to use it, but beware that you'll end your ride with a nose full of dust boogies. - No bags allowed, so I suggest wearing a top with accessible pockets. I wear contacts and need eyedrops frequently, so my travel vest with 17 pockets came in clutch (SCOTTeVEST). - Provide your actual weight and height. This is not only for your safety, but the safety of the horses as well. - If your knees feel uncomfortable during the ride, let the guides know so they can readjust the stirrups. Speak up, or stay in pain for 1+ hours (and beyond, after your ride). - HAVE FUN! read more

I called them up to see if they could fit my girlfriend and I for a last-minute weekend booking. Nishma answered the phone and was so sincerely sweet and accommodating and helped us secure spots on an otherwise fully booked weekend for a 1 hour trail ride! On the day, Larry and John taught us how to ride along with a small group of others. There were children in the group and the both of them were so patient and gentle with teaching the children and would use repetition to ensure they got the concepts of steering and stopping the horses. The horses (all mares) were so gentle and well-behaved, I can't imagine the amount of training and TLC they put in! They brought us on a short and simple course to ensure we got the concepts, then brought us onto a beautiful trail right by the training area. The trail was gorgeous, with vibrantly colored trees and foliage, sunlight streaming between trunks and branches, small gentle creeks that the horses would splash through, and small inclines for the perfect amount of excitement. The horses knew exactly how to navigate the trail so no skills were necessary from us riders. We had an amazing time and will definitely go back for the longer trail rides! read more

My wife & I have gone horse backriding in South Lake Tahoe, Monterey, Hawaii, Amelia Island (Florida) in the past. Yosemite Trails was by far the most hands on & epic riding adventure we've ever had. Like other Reviews pointed out, the dirt road to the ranch was a bit challenging. But, it was well worth the 10 minutes it took to navigate it. The staff were all "hands down" the kindest & caring group to both the horses as well as to the guests. You could tell that they genuinely love their job. Getting to practice in the corral prior to going out on the trails was great. Be prepared to do some work if you go on the 2-hour ride. We both loved it. We did a lot of up hill & down hill rides. We also crossed streams on 4 or 5 occasions. Such a great time. We'll definitely do it again. read more

We had a great experience doing a 2 hour trail ride here with a group of 4. We had varying experiences from beginner to intermediate, and I thought the ride was a great fit for everyone. I love that the ranch is family run. Our tour guide was named Michelle and she did a great job doing going over how things work and taking us into a training ring. Her brother assigned us bourses based on height and experience, and I think he made really good picks for everyone. The trail was shaded for most of the time which was great because we happened to go on a hot day. The whole ride was serene with beautiful scenery. We crossed several streams and went both up and down hills, so I think we kind of covered all of the bases in terms of variety in a ride. They are located outside the park in Fish Camp, and I would highly recommend it as an activity for when you want a break from hiking or crowds read more

Talk about hospitality! They managed to squeeze me in same-day on a "full" 2-hour ride as I was just one person. In the end it didn't make a big difference, since there were two no-shows. But still, I appreciated their willingness to go the extra mile! Both guides were lovely and clearly care about their horses. Every horse looked healthy and well cared for. They explained all the safety rules and gave guidance on how to ride Western Relaxed style, emphasizing being kind and communicative with your horse. I really liked that. The horses were all gentle and good tempered, which makes riding approachable for beginners. Only caveat is that the 2 hour ride had quite a few steep inclines and declines, so you would need decent core strength and leg strength (squeezing) at various points in the ride. Other than that, though, it was smooth riding. I think I'd like to come back in the spring/summer for the half-day ride, because this one flew by! Well, I booked the horseback trip from Ohio, prior to our arrival, to our first trip to Yosemite for my family of four adults. I should note first, that they DO have a BMI calculator actually embedded in their website. They have a BMI limit of 32.0 with a 250 pound maximum weight. I completely understand the weight requirement. These animals are well-cared for, according to other reviewers. You can't weigh ANYthing over what they should have to endure. I TOTALLY get that. I am 5-10 &1/2 and weigh 227 pounds. I have an average build with a VERY slight "dad bod". My BMI is 31.7; if I enter 5-11 as my height on their calculator. My BMI is 32.6 if I enter 5-10 as my height. So I called them and spoke to a very nice person who stated that they have turned people away for having a BMI of 32.1. Please use their calculator prior to booking and, if you're even CLOSE to 32 BMI, choose another company that doesn't use BMI. They're out there! Our family had a fun adventure horseback riding with Yosemite Trails. The two hour tour was pushed out to over three hours. The additional time is most likely due to our inexperience. We signed up for the beginner horseback tour and I feel the hills were too steep for first time riders. The guides were kind but somewhat checked out. I asked them questions to try to engage in conversation. The tour would have been better if there was a storyline along with our horseback ride. The scenery along the horseback trail is breath taking. Sadly, my husband was so nervous on the horse that he did not look up to enjoy the view. Fun ride! Dusty in the summer but you cross crystal clear streams and go over multiple peaks. Tour guides are customer friendly (Lucy the 17 year old rodeo queen was fun up front and John was great taking up the back). It is a 2 hour RIDE (meaning it's not 2 hours from the second you get there) so use the bathroom and get ready for a real outdoors ride. We will be doing this again! read more

We planned a visit to Yosemite National Park and originally, we were going to book a bike ride/tour but then I encountered Yosemite Trails horseback riding and I got excited! My boyfriend booked us an hour horseback riding and it only cost us $100 for two people. Sounds like a sweet deal to me! When we got there around 1pm, the weather was gloomy and smoky; I'm assuming due to fires that's happening. We parked and got greeted right away. We were given helmets and were taught how to maneuver the horse we will hop on. Uncle Larry did a great job teaching us how to turn left, right and how to stop our horse. He put me on Irene which I thought was super funny because my sister's name is Irene. My boyfriend got Ten-ten/Teeny. There were 7 people in our group plus Mitch, our guide. Mitch was an awesome tour guide! He had us do practice rounds and he made us feel safe. Although the weather was not how we expected it, we definitely had fun! Half way, Mitch got off his horse and checked on everybody to make sure we were fine. We also made it through a small stream which I thought was pretty cool. I loved the horse I got! She was super sweet and she would allow me to pet her :) super thankful for the experience and how friendly, welcoming, and patient everyone is at Yosemite Trails :) we'll definitely be back soon! read more

The family that runs Yosemite Trails clearly loves what they do, and it shows in the care and attention they give to the details. We're not experienced riders but we had a great time on the 2 hour trip last week. It's challenging enough to make it fun and adventurous but it also felt safe. We got to see some beautiful parts of the Sierra National Forrest from horseback in a way that we likely wouldn't have been able to see by foot or car. The staff were friendly and professional - made us feel prepared but also like they wanted everyone to have a great time. Can't say enough good things about our trip. I also wanted to commend them on the way they handled the safety of their guests with respect to COVID. Groups were kept separate while checking in (once on the horses it wasn't an issue, as they ride naturally spreads everyone out) and they did a good job of disinfecting any surfaces we needed to touch (saddle, helmet, etc). Everyone had masks (or bandanas) on, and kept them in place appropriately. read more

The security and riding method were very well explained and there is also a test ride at the beginning. Very well done! Their horses are really well trained and responsive. I was really impressed. They foal and train all their horses and know them very well. I highly advise you to go! You do not need any experience, just not to fear horses.
