Drove 45 minutes to go to this restaurant and was totally disappointed with our food. So sad because it is a beautiful place right on Lake Ontario. I had the stuffed chicken breast special and my husband had the haddock special. I had two 1/2 inch bones in my chicken and the fish had 4 bones and was very bland. After speaking with the manager, I was told that it was airline chicken. First of all that was not stated on the menu and secondly, there were 2 bones on either side. Not normal with this cut. Location is it's best feature, until you get the food and then it's really a tossup. The food was outstanding the presentation was great, and the view made the whole evening seem timeless. The bar was adequate, nothing too high-end, but everything was available. The desserts were clearly housemaid, and it was phenomenal to have a llama cake that didn't come prefab from some large distributor. I can recommend our server, Anna. She'd been there for only a month, but was perfect in her timing, demeanor, and conversation. I would recommend you go as often as you can. I've been eating at this restaurant for over 40 years! It sits on the shore of Lake Ontario and offers a beautiful view while you dine. About 10 yrs ago, new owners brought in a top shelf chef with great menus, food preparation and presentations. Tonight I enjoyed a pomogranite martini and the evening's special salad (spring greens, blackberries, Pecans, and gorgonzola). My entree was the special Halibut (soy and ginger reduction) served over perfectly cooked asparagus and risotto. They make the BEST risotto! I ended with cinnamon and brown sugar ice cream. I have to say, I wasn't sure what to expect when my friend said we HAVE to come here when we visit. Read the menu online and it seemed small. The Yelp reviews were mixed. Grateful we did try it because we got to try some unique dishes and various flavors with a gorgeous view. Exceeded my expectations for sure! The service was very attentive to us, even fixing my drink when I noticed a bug had fallen in. They also made sure my aversions and allergies were taken care of. I learned: look BEYOND the website because there are specials. Once I saw Duck on the specials menu I said "yup that's it, that's what I'm getting". The bacon wrapped scallops and crab cakes also were a hit with our group for appetizers. We loved sipping cocktails, catching up with old friends, and enjoying the view. Live music near the outdoor seating also was a very nice touch. Heads up: yes the wait times are long for food. Expect to spend a few hours here which for our group we didn't mind as we enjoyed each other's company (we see each other 1-2 times a year at most) and the views. The food is high quality. While I did enjoy my entree (duck special), I requested it to be cooked medium and it came out more well than expected. While I normally would've sent it back we had already waited an hour for entrees to come out and didn't want to risk our group waiting longer. When seeing the seafood escapade come out, I think I'd order that next time. But who knows, with rotating and seasonal specials there could be different options to try. WOW WOW WOW. Full disclosure even though Rainbow Shores is 5 miles from our house and we have lived here for 15+ years today was our first visit. We celebrated our 28th anniversary today and wanted something local but new to us so RS won. My wife ordered a Blueberry Mojito (which was the only negative of our experience). Zero blueberry taste. Anyways we came for the food not the cocktails. We started with their fried Mozz balls and spicy marinara and Calamari with banana peppers and spicy marinara as well. A++. The calamari presentation was beautiful (on a small piece of slate). Lightly breaded so you tasted the freshness of the calamari instead of just the breading. The fried Mozz Balls were also A++. The spicy marinara and the balsamic sauce for the Mozz balls was a great combo. Entree time. We both got the Filet Mignon. I got mine with a Cheddar Russet Cake and Gorgonzola. OMG It was cooked and seasoned PERFECTLY. I know filet is supposed to be tender but this was the most tender piece of beef I've ever had. The cheddar russet cake was delicately fried and insanely good. The Gorgonzola was great as well. My wife got the Black Angus Filet with a Jack Daniel's balsamic reduction. Hers was also cooked and seasoned perfectly. She had the risotto and red mashed potatoes with cream sauce as her sides. We sat outside overlooking the lake. The breeze was just enough to keep us comfortable and also not annoying with blowing stuff around. We got desserts to go. We got 2 Chocolate Caramel Lava Cakes with Vanilla Ice Cream. Dear Lord, this place is amazing! The views are breathtaking. The food was outstanding, and the service was superb. We are in the bar area even though seating was available in both decks. Both decks are waterfront. One deck is much closer to the water than the other. There are Adirondack chairs all around as well. We had sandwiches, a burger and a Hawaiian BBQ salmon burger. Both were cooked perfectly and they were delicious. We had calamari with red pepper ketchup and mango ketchup. Delicious! Beers were ice cold too. What an incredible gem! I am a born and raised Upstate/Northern New Yorker and can tell you there just aren't that many places that offer this kind of fine dining atmosphere. The food is creative and delicious and the restaurant and grounds are stunning. The only reason this isn't a five star is because my husbands medium steak was as rare as could be (totally cold and uncooked in the middle). But he likes it that way, too, so it wasn't a problem for us but it shouldn't have happened. That said, he elected not to tell anyone so that's on us. My halibut was delicious and the rest of the food was amazing. Best Cesar salad I've had, and the desserts were fantastic. They have been understaffed because of the pandemic, which is a common issue in the restaurant industry, and haven't been able to seat anywhere close to capacity. This is why they require reservations at the moment. That said, despite the staffing challenges, we didn't have to wait that long for food, at least no longer than other upscale dining places anyway. We are high risk for COVID and the staff graciously seated us in an outdoor socially distanced area. I don't even know where to start, it was that bad. I should also state that I had worked in the food/hospitality industry for 25yrs, and the last 10 in management. My husband was a chef for 6yrs. We know what to expect. I asked my husband to take me to the Mother Day Buffet. The price was $46 for adults .. What a con job!! Our reservation was for 1:pm the first seating, arrived on time and waited at least 10min for a server to take a drink order that took another 10 to get, they were not busy. It's now 1:40 and we asked when we may go to the buffet, she said you can go now but not all the food is out. It was a shit show with people getting food and people trying to get thru people to get back to your seat. Never have I seen such a ridiculous set up ... it gets worse. Half the food was not out and what was out was cold. My husband went back a second time and they were out of items from the first round, not even sure if they ever really brought out the missing items. The Prime Rib was good but the man carving did not have the proper knife or even a fork, he did wear a glove while struggling to carve and serve clearly it was his first time. The service was extremely slow and she was hard to find. I love a good desert table at a buffet ... well there wasn't one. You got a list of desserts and you had to pic one, your sever would bring it to you, that took another 15 min to get. We all got the Creme Brulee which is a cold dessert and I'm pretty sure it just had to be pulled from a cooler When I asked our server why no dessert table as the norm for a buffet she very rudely stated .. well not on this one. It never stated on the menu that this is how dessert was being served. This place has so much potential but it's clear they have no idea how to serve a buffet, or set one up. It's not often we spend that kind of money in a restaurant so when we do it would be great if we weren't deceived. So disappointed with the service. We had a reservation and were seated quickly. The waited 35 minutes and finally went back to the hostess to ask for a server. Finally the server arrived, brought water and said "take a few minutes to look at the menu"!!! We had been looking at the menu for 45 minutes at this point. At about the one hour mark, we ordered. Food arrived very slowly but honestly 2 of the 3 entrees we ordered were fantastic. The appetizer we ordered never arrived...and we would not recommend the Fish and Chips which arrived with the fries so overdone they were like potato sticks and they were out of slaw and offered no replacement. To get the check we have to once again approach the hostess, and then when we presented the credit card, another 15 minute wait. At this point there were only our table plus one other even seated in the restaurant. After some discussion we decided to leave a 10% tip -- generous as the service was terrible (no offer of water or drink refills, the to-go containers took multiple requests, the time we sat ignored). After we departed, someone "head server or possibly front manager?) came to our car and beat on the window. She then threw cash into the window and screamed "we don't need this, for our server who doesn't even make minimum wage, we will work it out". First, how is it that the staff is not paid minimum wage -- and how is that a problem for patrons? We left a tip -- not generous but we felt more than generous considering our service. The person that brought me to this restaurant is a summer local and frequent patron. No MORE. The person might have said "please tell me where the service missed" or "what can we do to improve for your next visit"...not screaming at regular customers. First the good: staff was friendly, but slow. View is amazing. Lovely deck with sunset views. Dining room looks fancy. The food we had was good but... We came after a beach day for drinks and apps. You drive about a mile down a rutted, dusty, gravel road to get there. So the car was filthy and we had dust in our mouths. We walked in and three different people asked if we had reservations. The place was empty. We asked if we needed them and they said no but a lot of people make them. Told us to wait for the hostess. She finally came out and seated us in full sun. There were shaded and umbrella tables available but they were four-tops and we were a party of two. A sunny deck like this should have umbrellas on all the tables Thought I could handle it but it got really hot, really fast. We ordered two cocktails at $12. Some were $15. We ordered the fried calamari appetizer for $15. The server brought us bread which was good because we were starving. After about 20 minutes of not seeing her we finally got our calamari. We were going to order more drinks but because the portion was so small, we knew it would take us about 3 minutes to eat. And we would wait 15 minutes for more drinks to drink in the hot sun. So we left, going in to the bar to get out of the sun. Our server saw us but we waited about 10 minutes standing by the bar to get our check. For $15 we got a handful of calamari (perfectly done and delicious.) But $15 would get us a pile of calamari anywhere else. Service was slow. Not sure if they were understaffed but it seemed like enough staff to serve the few people who were there. We saw 3 servers and one bartender. Perhaps we got slow service because we weren't ordering dinner. Entrees were $33 to $45. Two drinks and a handful of calamari was $42, plus 4% credit card fee, plus 20% tip = $52.Doubt we'll be back. read more

Didn't see anyone or get drinks for at least 45 minutes, and the only reason we got them then was because we walked up to the bar to get them ourselves. It took us TWO hours to get our appetizers and then another HOUR and a HALF to get our main courses. Two of the people in our party never even received their main course meals. The server came out and made a snarky comment about us being from Texas, but half our party was from New York. One of our friends was held back by her throat. Absolute worst experience. The appetizers were delicious, but with the level of rudeness we experienced I would never even care to walk into that building again. The owner showed zero remorse and said "honestly other then it taking a while nothings been bad." Blamed the slow service on being short staffed while she was sitting having drinks. This was the single worst restaurant experience I've ever had. It was like the film, The Menu, adapted for dinner theater, without the actual killing, which would have at least mercifully ended the ordeal sooner. It all began by travelling 3 miles down a pot-hole strewn dirt road that made the Oregon Trail seem like the Autobahn. By that I mean it's not suitable for cars. Tractors and All Terrain Vehicles yes, cars. no. That is not an exaggeration. The fact that no other reviews mention this fact indicts the level of trauma the other victims suffered at the hands of their captors. Upon arrival, I texted my chiropractor to make an appointment & went inside. People at the bar looked relieved they were no longer alone, perhaps wishing I would carry their message to the outside world if things took a turn for the worse. They did. The staff, apparently wary of strangers avoided my gaze, until a person wearing an apron bumped into me. "I'm one of five with reservations." I said, without an ounce of irony. After a terse exchange akin to a Russian border crossing, I was directed to a deck outside where two of my fellow inmates were waiting. Shielded from the crossing in their luxury 4wD, they smiled. Our two other friends arrived shortly after in their four wheel drive vehicle, their elegant attire similarly unruffled in their off road ready machines. Well practiced in the art of deception, an employee swooped down, took our drink orders and promptly returned; beer, here- wine, yes, espresso martini... "well, our expresso machine is broken so we sprinkled some coffee grounds on top of the milk..." Before my stunned companion could respond the server fled the scene. The time was now 7 o'clock, our 6:00 reservations behind us. Some 30 minutes later Brunhilda arrives to set the trap. i.e took our orders. It would be another 60 minutes before another employee appeared on deck It was at this point I realized that much like survivors on the Titanic, I would need to call upon all my not inconsiderable skills & a bit of luck to make it out in one piece. As any soldier worth their salt will tell you, situational awareness is key. Scanning my options, I seized the opportunity, sprang from my seat and approaching the beleaguered barkeep, where I quietly and politely told her I wished to withdraw my Seafood Escapade order. And yes, that's the actual name of the dish I now desperately sought to avoid after the Folger's Martini fiasco. Stirred from her torpor ~ she asked why I cancelling my pasta order ? With all the deference one gives to the aggrieved widow at a funeral, in hushed tones I said that after an hour I had little hope the poor fellow would make it and sought to end the suffering out of consideration for the survivors. She quietly nodded in solemn agreement and I returned to our table. My companions anxious for any news from the front, asked what I found out about our future prospects for supplies. Before I could muster a reply, the person- who single-handedly put the word wait in Waiter materialized at my side; cold and foaming at the head like the beer she failed bring - and announced to all heads within ear shot - " that she would have to pay for the order I cancelled because the food had already been cooked." My cover now blown, I replied with all the vigor of the Baptist preacher that no one should be punished by having to pay for ; let-alone eat, whatever was allegedly cooked at some point long ago, that I would take my grievances to the manager immediately !! Following close behind my now animated attendant stood by as I politely explained to the small crowd of idle workers that employees should not be forced to pay for managements poor recruitment policies. Rising to the occasion, the woman genuinely puzzled by my statement said, "what ? We would never make our employees pay for a meal a customer ordered" and turned her now glowing eyes toward the agent of scheme. The staff who now outnumbered patrons, stood around me as if waiting for a brawl to erupt -mouths agape and shaking their heads both yes and no as if shocked by the assertion and glad that the truth had finally been uttered.!! Another person younger but of similar rank as the guard keeper announced with a flourish, in simpatico with her fellow wait person- "Fine, here's your receipt, byeeeee." Not to be out done for a notable exit I calmly replied, "I'd love to leave, but you haven't returned my credit-card yet... . This successfully becalming the wind from her bellowing sails turned and ran my card thru the machine that was apparently programmed by the staff and it eventually spat out my receipt. What a great night we had at Rainbow Shores with friends, sitting at an outside table, enjoying the beautiful waterfront, listening to music, and being serviced by friendly staff. My husband and I were concerned based on negative reviews. Don't be discouraged from coming. Our experience on a Sunday evening was quite positive (unlike the others). The Brussels sprout appetizer was amazing and we all liked our meals (prime rib and seafood). Our courses did come out slowly (about an hour) and we didn't mind the lag, with our expectation the night was to be enjoyed in conversation and not to be rushed out. Small areas of improvement? 1-Music volume was loud for the venue, making it challenging for us to hear one another. 2-Only one bartender helping many customers. This created a longer wait to get some drinks before dinner. (We get it though: everyone is short staffed) We definitely will be returning again! read more

I had high expectations after reviewing the menu and prices, needless to say I was incredibly disappointed. The salads were a joke, the bread was half stale, and the service was lacking to say the least. I will admit that the food itself was ok, but definitely not deserving of the prices they charge. We had a party of 6, and we spent just shy of 3 hours there from start to finish which was ridiculous. I had to seek out another server to find out why it was taking over 20 minutes for our desserts. We were initially looking forward to coming back to try more of the menu but after this experience we will never return. Over the years, I've been to Rainbow Shores for both regular meals and special events - both my own wedding brunch and a friend's rehearsal dinner. The food has always been top-of-the-line, as I've enjoyed everything I've tasted. It's also important to note that the grounds and the view are breathtaking. It pains me to say this, however, but the service is horrendous. There is never enough staff. Wait times are ridiculous. And the cadence of serving different courses is seldom correctly spaced out. I've never had a meal that took less than two hours. If Rainbow Shores can fix their service shortcomings, I would absolutely go back again. But, for now, I don't think I'll be back anytime soon... read more

These cabins on the shore of Lake Ontario are very nice. A great place to see the spectacular sunsets on Lake Ontario. The cabins are very clean and up to date on the inside. The bedding and towels are included. There was a new TV, microwave and coffeemaker. A wonderful experience. read more

Ok. We have been going here on wednesdays for beer tasting last year and this year. I typically get a turkey burger and fries. I had the turkey burger last week and it wasn't to great. So this week I got a $4 cup of beef soup and a side caesar salad. The soup was broth a few carrots and a few hunks of fat. The salad was a hunk of uncut iceberg lettuce a piece of toasted unflavored bread about the size of a tablespoon. And a few pieces of shaved parmesan cheese and a tiny cup of caesar dressing. It was a bad wedge salad. I gave 3 stars only because the wine was good and I love the atmosphere. And Bre the bartender is always GREAT. If this place was closer to Syracuse it would be mobbed and recognized as one of the best restaurants in the area. But, I guess, I am glad it isn't closer because then you wouldn't be eating on a deck overlooking Ontario Lake, watching amazing sunsets and acrobatic diving birds. 45 minute drive is so totally worth it. . . it is down a dirt road and in a house without a sign, so just be forewarned, yes that is the place! Last night was the third time we have eaten there and this time, instead of sitting at the bar or in the Adirondack chairs on the lawn and having apps, we went with the full on waiter service on the deck, heck it was my birthday dinner, and this is where I choose to go, that should tell you something. The setting is just sublime, truly, the best outdoor spot for dinner in all of NY and one of the best anywhere. We had a bottle of wine from a small but well selected list. Usually we drink Cabs, but we tried a Camenere from Chile and it was excellent. And I believe it was mid $20s for a bottle, so a good value. We skipped the apps this time and just had the daily salad (field greens, almonds, and blue berries) with a light balsamic dressing. It could have used a splash more dressing, but I'd rather have it light than drowning. The corn chowder was really thick and came with a thin, big crouton to crush up into it. The chowder needed this bit of extra salt. Along with a bread basket that included three different kinds of bread, we were satisfied and ready for our dinner. I had a porkchop, big thick, and juicy with a very enticing bone. I would have preferred it a bit less cooked, I am eating my pork less cooked these days, but I should have told them to under cook it a tad because most people want it cooked all the way through. It came with caramelized onions, cooked with apples and wine. Just truly divine. For desert, a triple espresso gelato. . .oh my, reminded me of my mom eating coffee ice cream but so much better. If you are a foodie in the CNY area, do yourself a favor and get up here, just avoid Thursdays, the waiter said that is all you can eat crab night (which really doesn't fit with this classy place) and it is really busy that night. We have always had a great dining experience at this venue. Have been going here for years. The last couple years we went in the beginning if August. The view was fantastic from the deck, the wait staff was amazing every rime and the food was delicious. I had the filet others had seafood and we had the ceasar salad then afterwards coffee and dessert. Our experience on 7/7/15 is similar to that of Maggie H. below. Although we didn't walk out it took 1hr. 45 minutes to eat there (no desert). We arrived on time for our reservation to find no one to seat us. The restaurant wasn't busy say 8 parties at most. Once seated approx. 15 minutes to get drinks and bread. After 35 minutes our order was taken. Food was fair steaks @33.00 ea. were overcooked and stringy. Chicken was good as was tuna. All portions small compared to pricing. Ceasar salad was a qtr. slice wedge of lettuce with little dressing. 3 of the evening's entries were unavailable. We've been coming to this restaurant for many years (locals). In the 10+ years my family has been coming to this restaurant every summer, service has been steadily declining but tonight it reached an all time low which culminated in us walking out of the restaurant. We arrived to the restaurant with a reservation for a party of 10. It was clearly a very busy night, due to the July 4th weekend, and it took about 15 minutes to get seated at a table without menus and nothing in the tables except salt and pepper. A few minutes later a waitress came with water but it took over 30 minutes to have our drink order taken and 45 minutes to get menus and bread but still have no plates or silverware to spread butter on our bread. No drinks after an hour. The wine arrived after an hour and a half but the sodas took 15 more minutes. After 2 hours half our appetizers arrived, the other half arriving 20 minutes later. At 2 hours 45 minutes we asked for our check to pay for what little food we had been able to eat. The owner's non-chalant response to our situation? "I guess there's no excuse". Adding insult to injury, they initially overcharged us by over $50, only changing it after my father manually added up the charges. Short Summary: Walked out after almost three hours waiting to get food. Owner was present and couldn't be bothered to care. The food that we did get was good and the setting is beautiful but we will not be returning again due to the service/management. read more

Cute little cozy love nest. We stayed in the cabin, which was...rustic, but comfortable. No A/C so just know that, but it was mercifully cool all three nights we were there. Great views on the lake. Didn't eat there, but the food sounded good, and was recommended by locals. read more

Five of us arrived on a Tuesday night without a reservation. There were empty tables, yet we waited an hour to be seated. Then we waited for over an hour to be served. One person's pork chops were over-cooked; the mashed potatoes for two people were undercooked. The other meals were ok, nothing great. To compensate for our wait, the management took $25 off the check, $5 per person, which reduced our bill to $170. It was an expensive night to wait wait for over 2 hours for mediocre food. Perhaps they were short kitchen staff, but because no one offered an explanation, we won't be going back. read more

I'm going to start with we have been coming here for well over 10 years. We have always came here for the view and the food was always consistent. We went last night to celebrate my Mom's birthday. Made a reservation a head of time and decided to get there early to watch the band and have a drink and see the sunset. We had advised Renee in advance when we got there about a hour early we were all here and if she wanted to seat us sooner she could. We went in a few minutes before our reservation time was set for, she skipped right over us and set a group after us same size party. Which than she ran away and had someone else seat us. Because now she was scrambling trying to figure out how to seat us. I'm sorry but if your in the service industry you really need to do yourself a favor and work on your service. I worked in the service industry all through college and I was a hostess and I took a lot of pride in making sure I was fair with the seating for both parties involved the server and the patrons. And this was not even my restaurant. I have to say I was extremely disappointed by the owners behavior last night. I have never wrote a bad review but I travel all over for food and drinks and it's something I really enjoy. read more
