A few months ago, I showed up on a Friday evening, an hour and a half prior to closing time. The door was locked and I could see the barber (not Cory) standing inside the store with one other person. I knocked on the door several times. The barber pretended not to hear me. When the barber realized I wasn't going away, he gruffly shouted through the locked door that he was closed. I told him I had traveled several miles to get to the barber shop. It made no difference. At no time did he unlock the door to speak to me. Nor did he cut my hair. Two days ago, on Monday morning, I again made the mistake of attempting to patronize this barber shop during its normal business hours. The door was locked, there was no one there, and no note on the door explaining why the barber shop was closed during normal business hours. If you make the mistake of patronizing this often closed-with- no-notice barber shop, phone them first. If no one answers, they are NOT open, even if you phoned during their posted hours of operation. If you are lucky, and it is Cory's day to open the shop, he is punctual, courteous, friendly, he gives EXCELLENT haircuts, and he is very good with young children who are shy with adults.

Fred is back now, but as a barber rather than owner, and is a great source of stories about barbering and Tallahassee. When you come in, you're immediately greeted--usually by Scott. If you want Scott to cut your hair, you'll probably have to sit a while, because he's popular. But waiting here is not a problem. You'll likely be offered a cup of coffee. There's a rack full of magazines and comic books and a TV that seems to play Gunsmoke 24/7. The walls are covered in NASCAR, FSU and military memorabilia as well as a plethora of keepsakes gifted to the shop (or bartered for a haircut) over the years by loyal customers, most of whom the barbers know by name. There's also a display case full of antique barber supplies and news clippings from back when Fred ran a barber college. Make sure you bring cash because the antique register most definitely is not equipped to handle credit cards. Also, at the end of your haircut, neck shave and shoulder massage, don't forget to ask for "the cold stuff"--it'll wake you up better than any cup of coffee ever could. Pandemic-specific info: After being closed for a month, the shop reopened Tuesday May 12th. Scott is working alone this week, but the other barbers (Howard, Fred and Joe) are expected to come back eventually. For now, Scott is keeping the shop open 7:30am-4pm Tue-Fri and 7:30am-noon Saturday, but none of that is written down anywhere and it's all subject to change, so call before you show up. He's pretty much leaving social distancing and whether or not customers wear masks up to them, though he is wiping down chairs as soon as people get up. Also, if you want to wait in your car, that's fine, just check in with him first. He's not wearing a mask, but the guy is working so hard I'm pretty sure if he wore one he'd end up passed out with a burst lung.
