They have always sent me large, healthy seedlings that have grown beautifully for me. The price is good for the size and quality and the one or two seedlings that didn't make it for me, they have replaced. I followed the directions laid out for returns and never had a problem. Top notch customer service, and, perhaps most especially, the products that arrive are the products they are advertising. There is a large Oregon nursery that has a similar large selection that I will not name, that will intentionally mislabel products to sell them. Raintree has never done this to me. I've given them well over $1000 in business over the last 10 years and only have good things to say about them. Seeing a lot of poor reviews on here baffles me. read more

Have ordered many times. They are always top notch plants. Good root system. Good support. You know what type of roots it is going on. They are a little pricey but not if look at the whole package. I also recommend Cummins Nursery and, can 't remember the name but something like Schlaum(?). They are Amish so little harder to communicate with. Smaller plants but they take off like a champ and cheaper! But Raintree a 5 star nursery! So happy to have them. Love the large selection. read more

I ordered six trees in December and was charged immediately, but didn't receive them until five months later--far too late in the planting season. The weather was already too hot and rainy to plant. One tree arrived completely dead, and another was much smaller than advertised (3 ft instead of 4-5 ft). When I contacted customer service, they blamed me for not trimming the tree enough and for wet soil, even though they trim the trees before shipping and delivered during severe weather conditions. It took a week to get a response, and after I replied, I never heard back. Overall, very disappointing experience--poor timing, poor quality, and no real accountability. read more

We've bought fruit trees for several years now from Raintree. We were really impressed with the quality of product as well as the customer service. When I say "we" I mean my sister and I. My sister is a plant geneticist and Im a horticulturist. Combined we have over 60 years of plant knowledge. IE: we know plant physiology and needs. We know good plants. I recommended them to all my clients (Mn & Wi) who were looking for fruit trees. When 2 Dolgo crabapples came this spring with a larger order of trees, we potted them all up in our local soil to hold them. Our soil is from the driftless region: amazing soil. All trees were treated the same. *this is not something unusual to do in Wisconsin & Minnesota due to late freezes in spring; potting them up allows us to avoid cold snaps and hold them for a while to see how they will bud out. When we started planting the potted trees, they were all healthy and budding out except for the 2 Dolgos crabapples. I planted one and kept the other aside to watch and see if it was going to bud out. Neither did. One planted in the soil/ one planted in a holding pot. One died back to about an inch above the graft area. The other died off completely. All other trees: fine. When I cut them off to see what was going on inside the cambium ring was brown all the way around the stem. Both of them had the identical issue. Raintree wouldnt replace them. Did we scrape the bark earlier to see if it was green under it in the xylem? Yes. It wasnt. Did we let it freeze? No. Thats why we pot them up til the weather calms down. Did we plant it in the pot too deeply or too shallowly? No. All trees were planted the same way. Of all the trees delivered only these two Dolgo Crabapples failed. And they failed in exactly the same way. That doesnt point a finger at us and how we treated them. It points a finger at that lot of trees having something wrong with them. Will we buy from them again? No. No one has time to play with them. *to be fair the remaining trees in the order were as healthy as they usually are. And I understand from friends in the area that there are new owners. I understand that replacement trees cost the nursery, however you should replace defective products. Its that simple. read more

Buyer beware. Never have I been so disheartened by a tree purchase. It's a good thing I only orders a small number of trees. They tried to claim that they didn't have to honor their warranty, as well as shipping trees in a manner that I have never seen before. My bare root trees arrived without any means of keeping the root ball damp, merely wrapped in cellophane or some other plastic like material, then a layer of paper. Competitors will add damp newspaper shreds or peat moss. Anyway, one tree was dead on arrival, the other never leafed out and will most likely die. I'll never order from this business again, as I feel they are taking advantage of consumers. It also seems like they were lawyers before they were tree sellers. Read their warranty over and over before buying. It basically states that they don't have to honor it. I'm wishing I would have read some reviews before ordering from Raintree Nursery. I ordered over $200 worth of trees and bushes and some strawberries over the winter. Last week, they changed my order without notifying me ahead of time to a different variety of raspberries even though I ordered them last year (I'm guessing they are having inventory management problems because my order should have been relatively safe from running out). I also had two orders and paid a lot in shipping even though I'm pretty sure they could have combined my orders to save me a huge shipping fee. Then to top it off they are delayed in shipping because of a different shipping zone. So nothing has shipped still. I won't be ordering from this company again and wanted to share my experience to hopefully save someone else from avoidable frustrations. read more

I ordered several trees from Raintree. Two of them are doing fine. One of them is about a third dead after nearly 3 months of tender care and the other still hasn't leafed out. The two trees that are doing fine were sent to me in March, a normal time for bare root trees to arrive. For reasons I was never told, the two heirloom trees I ordered were sent to me in May, well the bare root planting season. They were extremely muddy and bedraggled. I contacted Raintree about eight weeks after they arrived because they had failed to leaf out. One of them did eventually leaf out although about a third of the tree is dead. The other one has not leafed out, nearly 3 months later. I got tired of having employee convince me that the trees were really just fine. Neither of them was all dead, but neither of them was in any shape to be sold at full price. I recommend you shop elsewhere. read more

I feel I had to post a counter review for all the -ve ones. I want to help gardeners AND the great suppliers - without either there would be no business' s left. I ordered 4 trees from Raintree on March 5/25. Rec'vd 03/31/25 under special request. ALL leafed out within a week. Today 05/07/2025 5 weeks in they are thriving! I am super happy as of now (weather and pests can ruin everything). Bareroots are tough to transplant and many die due to inexperience-novice practices. It is BEST to pay more for a 4-5' one as those 1' ones die half of the time or one has to wait 2 months or so to see the budding process. Ppl are IMPATIENT. Soil, timing and patience are key. Don't overfertilize. Plant slightly above grade if soil is CLAY as in the SE USA. Use a mixture of bed soil, coco coir to hold moisture intially + cow manure mixed with local soil to create a well drain mix. Don't overwater every3 to 4 days if needed. Use bamboo skewers to measure root moisture (stick 3 in the ground around tree). Plant in sunny locale and protect from squirrels. read more

I ordered a gooseberry plant a couple of weeks ago and was notified that it was shipped later. Then, I received a disturbing message with the instructions for planting. It was required to soak the roots in water for 24-48 hr before planting in the ground. They sold me a bareroot plant which was stuck in UPS truck for 8 days. So, chances of the dying roots revival are very slim and they know that. I just have a suggestion - do not send bareroot plants to the customers if the delivery time is more that 3-4 days. It's a waste. P.S. They responded with offering the credit for replacement plant in August. No refund though. But, there is no guarantee that another plant will not die in the UPS truck. How many times should I try? Better stay away from the trickster and go with the honest company. read more

Why would you offer for sale something that does not exist or oversell it consistently. Once I can understand it would be completely different if it happened two out of 10 orders or whatever but three orders in a row all had issues Of course they take your payment and process the credit card immediately when you place an order so now in March I am being notified that items I ordered several months ago and paid for several months ago is unavailable It amazes me that a business owner can be this poor at running a business. I noticed the Early Pink Lady apple tree I had been drooling over wasn't in this year's catalog. I called to see if maybe had any in stock and I got a lovely, healthy tree. It was a well packaged bare root specimen . That was good that it was packaged so well, as it had to survive the UPS guy tossing it in a snow bank beside my driveway, where it probably spent about a week. It is now leafing out. The woman who took my order was very helpful. She asked if I had any other apples, as this variety needs another tree for pollination. I said I had a crab apple. She said that should work as long as it wasn't too far away. Prompt shipping, good packaging, strong root system and good size tree, and helpful, knowledgeable staff. In late-spring, early-summer of 2021 I ordered two cherry trees. Raintree Nursery charged my credit card and said they would be delivered sometime in early-spring of 2022. In early-spring of 2022 I received an e-mail from them saying in effect "we didn't receive as many trees as we expected; too bad, so sad, we're cancelling your order." I asked if I could be put into a priority queue for next year. "Nope. We don't do that." So, I have no idea what their criteria is for deciding who gets the trees they ordered. I have no idea what percentage of the orders are actually fulfilled. I only know that they got to sit on my money for a year. Most reputable outfits won't charge your card until the product ships. The sad part is, if they had had a mechanism for ensuring that I would get my order next year, I would have put the same effective order in and would probably have made them my go-to nursery. At this point, unless every other nursery makes a mess of it, I will never attempt to order from Raintree Nursery again. read more

This company wants to expand with a website to get in on some of that "Internet money" but they aren't willing to meet the standards of service that "Internet money" expects. Things like: timely shipping, generous customer service, real-time inventory, customer service availability (my MIL tried to buy me a gift card here... no one picked up the phone so she called Molbaks). The excuse they recite is that they are in a rural area, internet isn't so good where they are (all excuses that made sense in 1995). Customer service is so bad they don't deserve your business. The website is completely disconnected from the actual inventory so you could place an order and pay for items that simply don't exist. Oh, don't worry, they'll give you a call about it 2 weeks later and imply it's your fault and a week after that they'll refund you and a month after that they might ship whatever is left. Compensation for tying up your money with false promises? Lol yeah right. Just deal with it, that's their attitude. The woman I dealt with in the phone went so far as to imply it was my fault for ordering rootstocks so late, that I should know better. I ordered a fruiting Quince tree that arrived almost 7 weeks later via UPS in a dormant state and bare root without proper packaging to keep it moist and cool. I immediately expressed my concerns . I planted it in a container with excellent potting soil and kept it in a sunny area with an irrigation system in one of our many hoop houses. (We have been in the landscape and nursery business for 50 years and are considered local experts in our field having the only wholesale nursery in over 50 miles.) After a few weeks, I took some photos and again expressed my concern over having no signs of new growth. I photographed the tree its location and soil and sent the photos to Raintree. At which time I was told I planted it wrong and they would consider giving us 50% credit. this whole process started the first week of April and now here we are in September My client has no tree I'm out A LOT OF PRECIOUS TIME AND$70 and all they can offer me is a partial credit. Love their great combo fruit trees, it is fun to have several species of plums, pears, cherries, or apples all on one tree. Really the only other decent place to get combo trees is One Green World nursery. If you get a combo from each place they can compliment each other and you can have a lot of different varieties on just two trees! That is what I have been doing. Crazy good cross pollination. FYI, Euro and Asian pears can cross pollinate, but Euro and Asian plums cannot. Just remember to plant it so the most aggressively growing branch is facing north. This can help even out the tree. Wrap the trunk and fence them in for the first few years. Gently fertilize them every spring when they are flowering. Some folks get mad because they sometimes have to wait a long time or they cancel a plant order. That is just how nature works. People get a crazy sense of entitlement because you can get almost anything on Amazon in a few days. With nursery plants often have to order many months in advance, and it is not guaranteed that they will be able to fill the order. My last order was put in July of 2022 (when everything is still in stock) for shipment in April of 2023, that is 9 months I had to wait. read more

From the catalog, this place looks amazing. I was slightly disappointed when we got out there (2 hr drive each way) and there was simply one green house customers could go. You have to write down your order on a clipboard, they ring you up, and and an employee brings it from cold storage out to your car with the roots wrapped in damp shredded paper in a bag. I feel that walking among the plants and looking at the plants is half the fun, so I was sad so many areas are for employees only. A lot of prices for fruit and nut trees seem reasonable. Kind staff. It looks like a hole-in-the-wall kinda place, because if you're not looking for it, you won't find it unless you're quite lost. read more

I've placed and received two, separate, mail/internet orders so far from Raintree. Each order arrived roughly about a week after it was ordered, the order was accurate, well packaged, the plants were super happy and I bought during their sale so I was super happy with the prices. My first order was all bare root and everything leafed up and is thriving after its first week of being in the ground. The second order arrived today. I loved that they carried a tree that is native to my area that ironically, I can't find at nurseries my area. My only wish is that I had a bigger yard to order more plants. First, this place is way out in the woods of the Ranier foothills. On a rainy day, you feel like you are lost in a Lord of the Rings spooky forest as the road gains in altitude, the mist moves in and the roadside mailboxes become scarce. Raintree is primarily a mail order catalog nursery for rare plants, small for shipping and expensive. It's a specific business model. Raintree has upped the ante by selling some full size plants in person and having a cafe and gift shop with bathrooms perfectly described in Jess' excellent review. They have books and obscure garden and fruit harvesting gadgets. Bring grandma! They exchange material with One Green World, but there is a world of difference. The staff was customer oriented, they have a big helpful and cheerful crew growing season helping out front. Some plants are only available in person or by catalog certain times in the year, when you should be planting them, call ahead to check. They have special events to make it worth spending an hour on some weekends, again call. And they have tea plants in gallons. read more

I placed an order for a cherry tree and 3 days after placing that order I received an email stating the ship time would be mid to late MAY. That's over one month. When I called to ask about the order I was quite confused about some of the information that they included in the email. The CS person there was less than helpful. When I read to her the portion that I was confused about, she asked, why are you confused? Well, if I knew why I was confused, I probably wouldn't be confused. She had a very uninterested and apathetic attitude. When I questioned the long delivery schedule I was told they had over 4,000 trees to ship. Well then HIRE MORE PEOPLE DURING YOUR BUSY SEASON. Shipping out trees in mid May is not ideal as the growing season is already in progress. I'm sure this is not the first season that they are shipping and after reading other reviews about them from different sites, it seems that this is a perpetual issue. The CS lady was going to automatically cancel my order without me even asking. I didn't really want that in case I could not find another source. After some additional searching and research, I'm glad they couldn't ship right away as my area does not support cherry trees due to the lack of chill time. This is a stunning, amazing nursery. I've bought a dozen trees from them and they're all beautiful and growing strong several years later. Honestly, if you're looking to grow edible perennials in the Pacific Northwest the quality and diversity of Raintree's offerings is unparalleled. Every time their catalog arrives in the mail, I'm drooling, can't wait to see what's new at my favorite nursery. And now that they've upgraded their site, I can maintain an online wishlist which is even better. Now I see a lot of negative reviews here, which surprises me since I adore this company, and I want to address what I see as their low-touch customer service. When I ordered my trees I knew they weren't going to be shipping right away, like a pair of sneakers from Zappos, because it clearly said so in the catalog. That was good enough for me and I had faith the trees would arrive in spring, as promised--and they did. That said, more communication would have been better, of course. In this busy modern world, we do need utmost clarity and reassurance and expectations-setting when we buy stuff online, and I totally understand why some customers felt alienated by that even though it didn't bug me personally (which is why I'm not removing a star).
