Have been coming here for years every time we're in Stratford. Always delicious and appreciate the portion sizes (always have incredible leftovers for the next day). The ambiance is relaxing, but the bathrooms are downstairs (difficult for accessibility) and I did notice some paint peeling on the way (a touch up in this area would be helpful). This is a restaurant where you go abuse yourself with rude behaviour. They serve as they are doing favour to you serving the food. I have request to the business owner please dont scream if you are serving the customers, please also have gut to take their opinions. Dont judge people by their race, religion or colour. After coming to Stratford for decades, I finally came here for dinner. Perhaps we should've come before. The entrance store was quite filthy. At the very least they could wash it a couple of times each season. The service was slow, and what really irritated us was when they took the orders from two younger women who were seated almost 10 minutes after our arrival. We almost walked out before our order was placed. They brought the food very quickly after our order was placed, which was nice. However, they did not bring the check for a long time after it was obvious we were done eating. As for the food, my DH and I ordered the pre-theater special and my brother ordered mulligatawny soup and Chicken Tika masala. We also had an order of garlic naan. I was disappointed with the mixed starters, as two of the three for breaded and deep-fried. We also had pieces of chicken Tika that were quite tasty. The three mains included in the special were butter chicken, beef rogsn josh and a chickpea dish. We did enjoy all of them, especially the beef dish. There are so many great places to dine in Stratford, I don't know that I would return here. The service alone is a disincentive to do so. read more

Extremely disappointed: Unprofessional service and unacceptable behavior by staff and owner. Only go if you want to spoil your day! I recently visited this restaurant with my family and friends hoping to have a pleasant dining experience but unfortunately it turned out ky worst experience I ever had at restaurant. To start with, the food had raw/uncooked chilly in the curry we order and on sharing this feedback to the waitstaff they were disinterested to fix it and neglected it. They even laughed over it instead of adressing it. What made the matter worst was unacceptable behavior of owner, instead of showing concern or addressing the issue he responded with foul language in front of family and kids, started screaming and yelling with blatant rudeness, berate us and passed racist comments and asked us to leave in the middle of dinner. We chose this place based on reviews available. The menu on the website is outdated and has different prices, actual prices are higher. And then there were series of bad experiences. Firstly, the Paneer Makhani ordered was too sweet and tomato sauce was not cooked properly. Secondly, the garlic naan had almost raw garlic flavor. Thirdly, the onion Pakoras were again undercooked. We literally had to throw them all. Lastly, we went to pick up the food at the time restaurant told us, but when we arrived there they took another 45 mins to give us the food. The one star is only for the complimentary drinks and dessert given due to the delay. The staff was courteous and apologitic about the delay. Never again. read more

This place is awful.!!!!!!! Worst customer service ever experienced. The staff is not open to honest feedback. We asked them to make our food spicy, they simply just added raw/uncooked chili and served it. We politely told them about the food, the server and owner made fun of it and the owner who was drunk at that time started yelling, passed racist comments, and told us to get out. He doesn't know how to behave with women and how to talk in front of little kids.!! He was so aggressive that we felt like he gonna hit us for a moment!! We called 911. Cops said by law you should've left his premises because the owner said so.! And they can't take any actions against him because there is no physical abuse. We have the video recorded. Later heard from some people that they also had issues at this restaurant. And someone took pictures, filed a complaint regarding Health & Safety, and he needed to close his restaurant. Our experience at Raja was super weird. Our waiter pushed *really* hard for my grandpa to get the Bengal Duck. When he ate it, though, my grandpa was certain it was chicken breast. The first time we mentioned this to the waiter, he laughed it off in an awkward, dismissive way. We brought it up a second time at the end of the meal and they took it back to the kitchen, came back a few minutes later, and apologized - it had been chicken. They took it off the bill, but the whole thing felt very off. I totally understand that mistakes happen. But somehow, this didn't quite feel like one, with the duck being pushed so hard on my grandpa and then the waiter brushing it off the first time we mentioned it. I would not recommend the vegan options here. The mixed vegetable dupiaza was so oily that it was inedible. The aloo gobhi was fine, but definitely subpar. Roti was yummy, though. Like many others, we found Raja overpriced, especially for the food quality. Rice doesn't come with the dishes - you have to order it separately. read more

We found Raja disappointing. The food was nice but not particularly spiced to our level of expectation. The service was clumsy and confused as if the wait staff were confused and it took a couple confirmations from our waiter to get our order right. What surprised us most is that we found a large piece of semi fried Saran Wrap in our shrimp masala. I ordered the butter chicken for delivery, and was sent the Chana Masala. I called and they promptly sent the butter chicken. However nothing was discounted or refunded to make up for their error, and they took the Chana Masala back. I was also surprised to find that a butter chicken for 18.00 dollars did not include some rice and naan on the side. The butter chicken was average at best, personally I prefer my butter chicken at home using the Butter Chicken sauce from Costco. Our favorite spot for Indian food (possibly just food in general) in Stratford. We come every time we're in town and our trip this time was just as good if not better than we remembered. We shared the mixed app platter, chicken madras curry, and lamb dansak as well as their naan and roti. Everything was delightfully seasoned and the meats were perfectly tender. Don't let the ornate small (seeming) bowls they serve the curries in fool you, we always leave with leftovers which are perfect for the next couple days' breakfasts. If you're in town you MUST stop by. Also they have expanded outdoor seating and some of the most beautiful flowers you'll ever see. Can't speak of them highly enough. Thank you Raja!!! read more

Worst customer service EVER! So disappointed. We had Christmas 2016 reservations and they were closed. They even called us back to confirm a week prior to confirm. So we had to scramble for our Christmas meal. Frozen food. Thank you Raja. I spoke to someone 2 days after. Their excuse: the manager went to Florida. Really? Then why did you take reservations? I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. I tried calling them several times for an answer, for an apology or an excuse. No one will return our calls. I am not sure what their problem is but I know that my family and I will NEVER set foot in their restaurant ever again. I am telling you, my neighbours and anyone who makes reservations to watch out for this place. They do not care for customer service. I have never given a 1 star before. read more

We've eaten in at Raja a few times, but typically order takeout. It's one of our favourite restaurants in town. If out-of-town guests enjoy Indian, we bring them here and they're never disappointed. The butter chicken and chicken korma are favourites, especially since we have kids who aren't into spicy dishes. Generous portions with large chunks of tender chicken. The naan is baked on-site and is always warm and fluffy. We usually order the mushroom rice as a side. If you're in town for the theatre, you might miss it since its tucked down a side street, but it's definitely worth checking out. read more

I have been coming to this restaurant for many years especially when entertaining vegetarian guests. Food and service has always been excellent. We have never come with the pre theatre crowd or had any time restriction so have not had the problems reported by folks in a rush. Recently arrived with 5 friends, many of whom had never been here. Several said best Indian food they ever ate. Also we had walked to the restaurant in a downpour and some of us were soaked (having not worn raincoats) The staff pulled out some freshly washed and ironed tablecloths for us to use as towels. A disappointment. Raja was crowded when we visited for a pre-theater dinner. Service is in teams; waitresses and servers are often literally running around. I was bumped into and had my foot stepped on a few times. Paperdum appetizer and variety of chutneys are great. But the excessive wait for our entrees was unfortunate. Our variety of dishes were bizarrely sweet and almost inedible, yet palatable because we were so hungry. They served us ice cream on the house after the meal as an apology for our wait, and the manager was attentive. This restaurant was right near our hotel, so after reading the ratings, we decided to have dinner here before our show. I have to say, I was not impressed. We waited well over 15 minutes for someone to finally come over and take our drink orders. Fortunately, after that rocky start, the service was a little faster though by no means did I find them remotely personable. I love Indian food. I didn't even come close to liking this. We started with the vegetable pakoras. They were the best thing I had during this meal, but they paled in comparison to every other pakora I have ever eaten. For mains, we had chicken tikka masala and sag paneer. The former tasted like Campbell's tomato soup and the latter tasted like it should be tossed with pasta for I couldn't detect a single spice regularly used in Indian cuisine. The paneer was flavorless too and the texture was more like jello. We ordered the garlic naan and it was unimpressive too. I didn't bother finishing the small serving I had. So I order Indian food from this place. The online menu says it comes with rice. We get vindaloo chicken and chicken korma. We get 2 bowls that look great and saucy. No Rice and the bread is thrown in a plastic grocery bag and it looks luke crushed chips. I call and the guy says you have to order Rice or anything else separately for dinners. No where on the menu does it state that. I think when you pay $40 US plus give the driver a $5 tip when a delivery fee was included you should get more for your money. Buyer beware read more

The staff was so welcoming and warm! They made the meal 5 stars. However, the bizarrely sweet food is the reason for 3 stars. All of the main dishes, we ordered 3, were oddly sugary, it was hard to taste much else. Maybe just a fluke evening. I have been to this restaurant a few times and was there just a few days ago for dinner before seeing Bakkhai (which is probably the best play/performance I have seen in over 10 years). I always remember being very pleased with Raja's quality of food and the service. Sadly, this recent trip was a complete disaster. I think it must have gone through a change of owners because it is now listed as Indian AND Pakistani fare. My guest and I were promptly seated. We ordered the $18 dollar appetizer for two which was pretty good. I ordered the Lamb Madras for my main, and my friend ordered the Chicken Jahlfrezi. The Lamb Madras looked like watery diarrhea with 3 pieces of lamb in it. NOT AT ALL WORTH 18 dollars. It lacked flavour and consistency. My friend's Chicken Jahlfrezi was half decent, but the chicken was rubbery as if it had been repeatedly frozen. We skipped dessert and I ordered a coffee. The coffee must have been old because it was lukewarm and almost unpalatable. At the end of dinner we got free drinks, and the table next to us got free drinks. I guess they must give out free booze at the end of every meal because customer service sucks and the food is crappy. I'm not ever going to waste my money going back there. read more

Ethnic cuisine is typically something you don't want to mess with unless you really know what you're doing. Most of the time a typical schmuck who's had his/her fair share of dining experiences can tell the authentic stuff from a knock off even if he/she hasn't had that particular cuisine before. Let me tell you that I am one of those schmucks who thinks he can and let me state even further that Raja is definitely the real deal. I'm pretty sure the only way to make it more authentic would be to travel to India. And, hey, this is Canada so we're already halfway there... or... well, not really. As soon as you enter Raja you know it's something special. Elegant surroundings that are subtle and understated let you know that you're in a nice place without making you feel like you should have worn a sport coat. We're talking dark textured wood, a nice looking bar, tables with fresh tablecloths, and all that jazz. Service here is like something out of a fine dining five star restaurant. Water is refilled almost as instantly as it's gone, plates are quickly removed once you are finished with them, and the servers remain in the background unobtrusive to your dining experience and allow you to ENJOY your meal. And enjoy your meal is something you will definitely do. Before the meal we were brought some bread (for lack of a better description... and unfortunately I'm not sure of its proper name... I'm fairly certain it was NOT naan) which was kind of like a large, crispy tortilla. To accompany the bread we also had several different "dipping" sauces that were extremely nice... sweet & sour, mango, coriander, and something else which I forget the name. All were exceptional except for the last, which my western tastebuds didn't care for. Nice, flavorful dishes are served here with plenty (although not excessive) of spice. Another important factor to mention is the level of spice, which I feel was accurately described on the menu - if they say it's a medium spice... then you're going to get a medium spice. Not too hot, not too mild. I learned that I could have kicked it up a notch, but I'm glad I didn't order the one that stated it was "extremely spicy." Holy Moses were these portions huge. The prices are moderate, but the serving size more than make up for the sticker shock some people might experience. WIth my chicken madras I was brought a HUGE plate filled with lots of rice, a small salad of fresh vegetables, and a side of something that was garbanzo beans (chickpeas) in a very good sauce. The chicken madras was absolutely awesome and tasted even better when mixed with my rice and placed on top of the naan which was also brought with the meal. All throughout the service was attentive, on point, and basically rockin'. They didn't even mind my stupid questions that basically amounted to "Am I doing this right? Is this how YOU would eat it?". When you're in Stratford, which is an awesome town in itself with TONS of dining choices, make sure not to miss Raja. If you can only eat at one place while here... I don't know if it tops the list, but it's pretty damn close. If you're here at least a couple days - you better stop here or you might violate some laws. Because it's just that awesome. The first time we visited this restaurant four years ago, we had a wonderful experience, especially since they were willing to create very mild dishes within their menu. We revisited two years ago and had a terrible experience. Very sloppy service, seated at a tiny table incapable of holding the food we ordered, no willingness to work with my wife in providing very mild dishes, and the food just wasn't up to our standards for Indian cuisine. This year we gave one last try, which unfortunately was similar to our second experience, although much worse. Even with a reservation, we were again seated at one of the two inadequately small tables with the statement that nothing else was available. We immediately ordered hot tea that arrived ten minutes later very cold. While we waited for our tea, we were arrogantly told we had to order our food. So we ordered two soups, which also took a very long time to arrive but was at least hot and tasted good. When the soup arrived, we ordered naan to go with it. That didn't arrive until we were ready to leave -- having ordered nothing else -- when one of the 5 waiters that kept alternating at our table (and who clearly do not communicate with each other) came to our table to see if we were ready for our naan yet! Two horrible out of three experiences convinced us. We love Indian cuisine, but this is not the place for it. Stratford has too many great dining options to be bothered with Raja. read more
