Ground cherries dipped in dark chocolate to finish at The (Old) Prune
    Pat A.

At a friend's suggestion, we ate at The Prune before going to see King Lear. I was glad the menu was online, because it gave me a chance to look at things before getting there. I was glad I did, because it was hard to choose between all the dishes - they all sounded excellent. Since it was the start of her celebration birthday week, we decided to splurge and went for four courses with accompanying wines. Wine pairings throughout the dinner were chosen by our server, and complemented the dishes well. I've attached photos to the site because I don't think I can do justice to the food with words alone. It was all delicious, and my only complaint is that I was too full to finish it all! Between the two of us, we had the amuse of beluga lentils on tasting spoons - the beet root added a nice little layer of sweetness to the rich deep notes of the lentils, and the creme fraiche and chives rounded out the palette of tastes by adding some smoothness and bite to our palates. Next, we experienced the smoked salmon, which is beautifully rich, moist, and aromatically smoky, and the chicken liver mousse, which has to be the lightest and most delicate mousse I've had - both of these dishes were memorable. After that came the starch dishes, sweet pea risotto and polenta with mascarpone. Textures were perfect, both dishes were rich and creamy yet had countering notes so they weren't cloying. Standout main dishes were the hanger steak (pretty much fork-tender, even though served with a massive steak knife) and moist and tender roast chicken. Both dishes came with mushrooms to enliven and enhance the dishes. Desserts were the straw that broke this camel's back. Neither is on the site's menu, but both were delicious. Lavender panna cotta is delicate and covered in a frothy meringue; the buttery and slightly salted ice cream, however, is to die for. Served with a ribbon of thick chocolate ganache, it was a stand out dessert. I'll be back - the room, the service, the food - all were very satisfying.

We didn't stay at the hotel, but got a nice tour of it and liked how many nooks there are to read or play games in, how different rooms/floors are Shakespeare-themed, etc. It seemed very well thought out - not just another basic hotel chain. Steel Cut Porridge: If you love dessert for breakfast, this is excellent. The banana is caramelized (flambeed?) and the oats are perfectly cooked and sweetened with the birch syrup. I got this twice and it's just the right amount. Avocado Parfait: This was weird, but edible and very filling. I wouldn't get it again - the avocado was a weird choice. Like a sweet guacamole? Pain au Chocolat: Fresh and warm, a little soft (I like them a little more crispy on the outside and soft inside). Decent amount of quality chocolate inside. Crispy Smoked Bacon: Okay this one was maybe not as well priced as you only get three pieces of bacon, but it was tasty and I didn't have any regrets. Thin cut, wide, fatty slices. Maple Breakfast Sausage: No complaints, nothing too special, so it was a little pricey at three sausages. Better of course dipped in maple syrup! Bruce Blend Tea: This was quality black tea, but also just okay for me personally. I appreciate that they tell you how long the tea should be steeped and give you a timer for it. Apricot Tea: I liked this a lot on its own, but I liked it even more with some maple syrup, which made it taste like peach rings. Lychee Tea: This was nice and also I liked it better with a little maple syrup. Fabulous service. On weekends you get hot towels, which I thought was kind of funny. There is a path just outside that leads to the Stratford Festival Theatre, which is nice. I don't know that I could afford to stay at the hotel, but I would definitely come back to the restaurant.

Booooring. Good service, typical boutique / tourist destination restaurant pricing (not cheap),…read moremostly small plate servings...but overall a disappointment. We ordered: blue crab hashbrowns (the only standout; would definitely order again, except that I won't likely return), salt roasted beets, brussel sprout caesar, scallops, and duck breast; then we both had creme brûlée and espresso. We tried the three white wines, one was a forgettable Chardonnay and the other two...were equally forgettable, notwithstanding being less common grapes. Only the duck was a main-size serving, and we only chose it because when we ordered there was only one order of scallops remaining (for a 5:30 seating!). I want to say "just as well" because the scallops and sauce were bland so we got to try something else...however the duck was not merely uninteresting but the red pepper sauce didn't complement and contributed nothing. The scallops were priced like a main but only four little guys on the plate, the one upside if we had both chosen them we'd have had room for another order of those crab hashbrowns. The beets were also dull, no idea why the word salt is in the name because it was absent from the dish. No tang to anything except the brussel Caesar. I've seen the brussel sprout restaurant renaissance of the last 10-15 years, this dish is pretty common now. This one was on a par with many others I've had but no improvement, and some might be put off: fully half the outer leaves are charred to the point of becoming a mouthful of ash. Not crispy, just dry ash. I guess that's different...and maybe this is the root of the problem. This restaurant makes a point of changing their menu constantly; not just seasonally, but weekly, even daily. So maybe they're just trying out stuff that pops into the chef's head. With the exception of the crab, every dish seemed to need something to make it interesting or appealing. The espresso was good, but the creme brûlée was another ill conceived concoction, with some kind of raspberry trifle thing on the bottom and the creme was a strange thick porridge-like texture and not quite the typical flavour. Last complaint: their self-description says Elevated Comfort. No. Mundane bistro look and ok seating, but that steep and poorly lit descent to the basement washrooms is the opposite of comfort. Hey, maybe we just picked the wrong items from their evolving experiment of a menu. The people are all nice, the service was good, and none of the food was bad...just meh.

Just one star off for the priciness, but otherwise really delicious, really pleasant environment,…read moreand a super helpful and friendly server. The French onion soup was really thick with cheese at the top, perhaps a bit too much so. The carrot salad was really pleasant to eat and felt healthy. The burger had a nice flavor and texture to it; the bun was a bit sweet, and the fries were tasty, but not super crisp though crisp enough, and a bit salty. The leek tartine was a bit monolithic, the leek being too oily and the bread a bit flat. It was overpriced by about $6 or $7 in my opinion. Wish there was as little more going for it. The crepes were decent; the nutella crepe was particularly sweet. For dessert, the roulé au chocolat was top notch, with a freshly whipped cream accompanying a sturdy and flavorful chocolate roll cake. Music was good too! All in all a good way to spend time eating and having a bite with friends and family prior to a show.

Our guy was on top of things, good descriptions and always there when we needed him. The food was yummy but not mind blowing. I loved that you could do half fries and half salad. The frite were soooo goooood and the garlic aioli was delightful. The rest was just good. I didn't think the "crispy" added a lot to the eggs benny but it was interesting to try.
