As other reviews mention, this place offers some really good gluten free options for those interested. I stopped by for a lunch before heading to Elora and ordered a halibut & chips and added on grilled shrimp on the side. Excellent fish, like one of the best fish and chips I've had and I've had a ton of that! Crisp on the fish was great, flakey inside without it falling apart. Fries were great as well but would like to see more fries on the plate. Shrimp was also really really good. I think it's hard to screw up grilled shrimp but their seasoning was cajun style and very good. Probably won't be in the area often but it's a great spot for some great fish and chips and clearly a neighbourhood classic. read more

Had a hankering for fish and chips and so stopped into Annie's based on the Yelp reviews and photos online. Ordered haddock and chips with a side of coleslaw and onion rings as an appetizer. They have local craft beer but no draft to speak of. The onion rings were huge and I had to put aside so I would have room for my main. The fish was nicely prepared and I ordered with the thicker English style batter (you can order with a light batter if you want). The chips were nice and crispy and I like the fact that they don't give you a huge portion of chips that you can't eat. I hate to waste food. It was really good! Absolutely fantastic gluten-free food for GF people with plenty of options (including multiple alcoholic and breaded items)! The onion rings, fries, and fried mushrooms were delicious. Unfortunately, I didn't love everything but I also think it was more preference differences. In addition, the ambience was really nice and fitting for Stratford. All that being said, it should be emphasised that this is not a place for vegetarians, unfortunately. read more

I have to update this place. It still is Gluten free heaven but sorry to say they are getting a little cheap on the portions. I am disappointed! I have added a picture of the Jumbo portion of Halibut and chips. As you will see it is not jumbo. There is a lunch (1/2 portion) , dinner and then the jumbo portion. I understand fish is expensive and the size was ok but could have been a little bigger but the FRIES come on! That is one of the cheapest items in a restaurant, fill up the plate and make it look big and if you eat the fries the customer will be full and say to themselves it was worth it. I will say the sever was nice because I did mention that the plate was light and not a Jumbo portion. She was helpful and asked if I wanted more fries. But please do a better job! When you pay $24 for a jumbo portion make it look like a jumbo portion please. read more

This charming spot is a gluten-free diner's dream come true! I never dreamed I would be able to eat gluten-free fish and chips, but Annie's makes that possible. I became a GF peep when I was diagnosed with RA in 2012. My naturopath discovered it was gluten causing all my inflammation and it would 'turn on' my autoimmune response (this discovery was made via an elimination diet). I cannot cheat or it means months of misery afterward, so I choose my restaurants very carefully. Annie's is so safe. They use red zones marked with tape and a dedicated fryer to eliminate cross-contamination, and the staff is trained so that they are certified GF. Even the owner has gone GF because of all the nasty things gluten, which is not natural and a by-product of genetic engineering, does to your body (read Wheat Belly and Grain Brain). I have spoken to them on several occasions and they go above and beyond what most restaurants do to ensure GF diners are safe. My husband and I have eaten here several times without ever having an issue. The space is so quaint and cute. The wood at the counter and throughout looks like it came straight off a boat. There is such a cute beachside/East Coast feel to the spot. All the cute little nautical touches and warm lighting make the space very inviting. The staff is friendly and helpful and very conscious of GF dietary needs. However, it is the food itself that sets this restaurant apart from ANY other restaurant where I've dined previously. I mean, GF fish and chips? I have never seen this available GF on any other menu. Usually, when I dine out the GF options are a burgerless bun (or GF bun if you're lucky), steak, salad, more places are getting better. But the great thing about Annie's is that almost the entire menu is GF!!! You can get the same things 'normal' people eat and here they are of exceptional quality and taste. The battered halibut and onion rings are two of my favourites! You would never guess the breading is GF. It is DELICIOUS! Last night, I ordered scallops with my fish for takeout and didn't realize they were deep fried. I have never gotten them deep-fried before and these were incredible. The scallops were soft and buttery and the crust on them was so tasty. One of the best things I've eaten in my life! Of course, I had to get onion rings too, and the whole order from fish to fries to rings was just as amazing as always. Annie's has an unbelievable number of frozen items in their takeout freezer too. I haven't explored every option yet, but I did bring home two GF eclairs. Again, would never guess they are GF. So good and got a huge thumbs up from very picky hubby too. I did see a baby turtle cheesecake (yes, also GF) in there. I do want to try one of those very soon. There is a lot more to explore at Annie's. I also want to try more on the menu. I know they have GF mozza sticks. Where can you get those eating out? I've literally never seen the choices this place gives you on other menus. Most GF menus are so small and what I can order is so limited, but the choices are endless and delicious here. I can't wait to try the things on the menu I haven't ordered yet...if I can make myself give up eating that addictive halibut or those mouth-watering onion rings. I always have to choose my restaurants for a trip or night out in advance and make sure GF options are offered. I've never seen the number of options or had the quality of taste on a GF menu like I do here, and it's close to Kitchener where I live, luckily. I'll keep coming back again and again because the taste is like the things I used to enjoy before I had to modify my diet, and I'm offered a variety of GF items I haven't seen at any other restaurant. My friend and I came to Annie's tonight after being enticed by this place for years. A bright sign by the road encourages you to try this place. Their specialty is fish and their feature this evening was a two can dine for $14.99. The menu is varied but being a fish restaurant both my dinner companion and I felt like we really should have fish. For the feature, we were given the option of two types of fish and we went with our servers recommendation (I can't remember the exact type) and fresh cut fries. Definitely the best fish and chips I've had in a LONG, LONG time! The fish was cooked perfectly and not overly greasy, the batter was tasty. Fries were lightly salted, allowing you to add salt as preferred. I had the creamy coleslaw and it too was delicious! For dessert, I had a slice of their made in house chocolate cream pie (heavenly!) and my friend had a slice of Strawberry rhubarb which he described as it was giving him a warm hug from the inside. In other words, he really enjoyed it. Service was prompt and friendly. Decor was welcoming and all in all it was a pleasure to dine there. I would say this is probably one of the best meals I've ever had in the Stratford area and I would highly recommend this place to anyone! read more

The best fish n' chips place I have been to in such a long time!! I had the haddock dinner with fries and coleslaw. Coleslaw was fresh and their tarter sauce was also top notch! Fish, ooh! So crispy and just excellent. The waitress was super friendly!! I the fact that she came to ask us if we were okay after giving us our food. We have eaten at other places in Stratford which serve Fish & Chips and have definitely found Annie's to be the BEST for flavour, size and price. We are from Stratford and eat regularly here. I am impressed at how everyone seems to be so happy and work together as a team. Not many places where the employees seem so glad to be at work. The person who said greasy spoon fish place wasn't kidding. If you're on a restricted diet or think you'll have a nice healthy piece of fish, forget about it. I specifically told the waitress I had diabetes and liver disease, and that's why I was getting the grilled haddock, and I couldn't eat the potatoes, rice, or bread either ... So, for $17 what I got was a tiny sliver of fish sitting in a puddle of fat (and I'm not overstating it), and then a mass of steamed carrots (high glycemic index -- lots of natural sugar) with some broccoli... so I separate out the carrots... I eat the fish, first letting the oil drip off of it as much as possible and when I get to the broccoli I realized it TOO had been steamed and then DOUSED IN BUTTER!!!! WHY bother to claim you have healthy options only to serve them up swimming in fat? So I couldn't eat that either cause its impossible to get fat out of broccoli once it's doused in it. And then... not even an offer to reduce my bill because the mostly served me food I could not eat after I had been more than clear about my medical condition when ordering. Seriously... go to Crabby Joes down the street, they've been GREAT about adjusting to my dietary needs, as has Bijou (if you want something fancy). So if what you're looking for is healthy fish, this is not the place. You might as well just get the fried fish. read more
