Since this would've been my first puppy, I asked some basic questions about his health, temperament, and background -- the kind of things any responsible adopter would ask. Instead of being met with kindness or patience, I was spoken to in a tone that came across as passive-aggressive and dismissive. I was even made to feel like I was asking "stupid" questions for simply trying to understand more about the puppy. I completely respect how hard rescues work, but compassion and clear communication matter just as much as the adoption process itself. It was disappointing to be treated this way when I was approaching the situation with genuine care and good intentions.

This is going to sound like "sour grapes", so be it. I can tell you it is not. By the time the…read moreorganization contacted us we had already purchased a German Shepherd from a breeder, who did more to vet us than this organization did. We lost our Shepherd, Riley of 9 years, to severe hip displaysia. Before that we owned a male Shepherd for almost 11 years. So we have had a great deal of experience at homing a German Shepherd. Both of our Shepherds were from working lines, but were both inside dogs. My wife stays at home and both these dogs were her shadow. After Riley, we thought we would go the adoption route. It's just my wife and I now as our son is grown and has his own family. We have never adopted before, but we thought why not. Some friends of ours had taken in rescue dogs and they seemed to work out great. We did not just want any dog. We wanted another German Shepherd. So we found German Shepherd Rescue and Adoption on the Internet and proceeded down that path. We were told it would be several weeks before being contacted and that is clear on their website. We understood the application fee to be non-refundable and that the dog we were interested in might not be available. All of that was clear and we have no dispute in that regard. What we did not understand is that your adoption viability can be turned down period. In other words, not only will you not get the dog you inquired about. You will not get any. While I believe that what GSDRescue says it is trying to do is a noble thing I have some real concerns that anyone should take into account before going down this road. 1. Due to the popularity of this breed, it gives me concern that many people may be paying this application fee (as they term it, a donation) without getting a dog. They do not publish any stats on this, but even if they did, it would need to validated by a third party. I would want to know how much money this organization has taken in from people who were not given the option to adopt. This needs to change. I get it, the dog may not be available, and they are subtle by calling a donation i.e.. You gave them them money. They should be absolutely clear about this and they are not. 2. I completely understand the need to vet out people wanting a rescue dog. The dog has been through a great deal already. However, you might be disqualified. And if you are, there is no explanation. You just have to accept their word on it, that the application form they use is a great judge of your ability to home one of the dogs no matter what experience you may have. 3. I struggle with when you indicate that you have significant experience as an owner of this breed, they still know better than you if you are suited without even a phone call or an email inquiry. That is astounding to me. As an organization trying to find good homes for these dogs and you summarily dismiss an applicant withou explanation, I have to question your sincerity in your mission. I find that either incredibly ignorant, arrogant or short sighted. 4. The burning question in my mind is how much is this organization taking in from disqualified applicants. In full disclosure, I wrote a scathing email to this effect and my deposit was returned promptly. The $20 is nothing to me. As I stated above, by the time we were notified of the disqualification, we had purchased a dog from a breeder. I was not expecting them to return it. I told them in that email that I would be posting a review. I hope I am wrong for the sake of the dogs. I hope this was just a case of poor business process and lack of communication on the part of GSDRescue.
