We adopted from these folks recently. Unlike another rescue, the cages are bigger, two level "condos" or entire rooms with only 4 cats. Their cats did NOT all have health conditions unlike another rescue we visited. We expressed interest in two cats in October but were traveling. So they said they can't promise anything but if still available we could apply to adopt. Our adoption application was approved in less than a week. When we finally went there in January, they were very helpful with the process. And we adopted the two cats we've been watching since October! read more

We were so excited to welcome a new cat into our loving home. We currently have one sweet dog, about 13 years old; she gets daily walks on Exploration Green and homemade dog food each week. Also, my husband and I work from home, and our animals get the most and best attention, truly one of the family. When I moved to Texas 17 years ago, I brought my cat. She lived until she had to be put down due to old age at almost 18. I found her outside; she was just a kitten in the street. She started as a stray that I spent time with, and eventually, I claimed her as my own and took her in. Because she was so used to going outside, she would always find a way out, even once I moved to Texas. We also had a beautiful border collie until the old age of 15. The volunteer asked my husband when he was filling out the application, "will you keep this cat indoors or outdoor?" He said he was unsure (I was shopping in the pet store with the kids) and told her our old cat was indoors and outdoors. He was honest. And THEN she told him the cat we wanted HAD to be kept indoors. We both agreed that this would be fine. Indoor only would be the preferred preference for us to begin. In retrospect, she tricked my husband. He was merely honest; he did not know she should have talked to me or asked more questions. However, that was it; she made up her mind that she did not like us. It was absurd that we were there with our children, overjoyed and excited to welcome a new family member; her rudeness was alarming. When we were leaving, my husband asked what the chances were we would get this cat; she replied that if we just wanted a cat, we could go to a shelter. Again, the level of rudeness is alarming. My family has been asking for a cat for over a year, and we have put much thought into this. We care excellently for our animals; they get more attention and love than most. We specifically, however, really wanted to rescue a cat. I waited until Monday to email concerning our Saturday application. They promptly told me our application was denied on Saturday because our previous cat went outdoors. Absurd. She also mentioned to me that they have "a process," which is fine, but then she told me that some people are too impulsive when they get a cat. I am a 40-year-old woman, married, with two children, in the same home for 14 years, and I have taken care of the few rescued animals I have had until their old age was too much. I am beyond disappointed that my children's love for this cat went down the drain because this woman was in an egotistical snappy mood. The night before adoptions, I returned from yoga class to a banner saying, "Welcome Home, Drake!" The banner included pictures drawn beautifully on it. My children also made a powerpoint presentation, better than the one I just made for my university course, and my children presented it to me. They were so excited. How dare you think that you are so high and mighty. Shame on you and your organization, you missed out on homing a cat to a caring home, and I will let everyone know. read more

Almost completely staffed by volunteers, SC does what it does very well. It's a nice facility, an open concept with several large well-lit rooms allowing prospective adopters to see or visit with their soon to be new friend. It's a nice place and a no pressure environment. The minus: For insurance reasons SC (like many of its counterparts) won't let you visit with any of the animals until you fill out an application -- even if you're not ready to adopt. I understand that. But when I did fill out the application, and wanted to do more than see the animal in the cage, I couldn't. There were no rooms available because they were busier than expected. The plus: the volunteer offered to meet me back at the shelter at some time during the week, when they aren't normally open. She even sent a followup email asking me if I were still interested. That was an unexpected and great marketing technique. Nice touch. The "huh?": I couldn't figure out why the followup email, since SC is temporarily closed for renovation and I was directed to a nearby pet store. Then I was told one of the animals was in a foster home. Big sigh. I think people willing to foster animals waiting to be adopted, is beyond awesome. SC is one of many area shelters that do this. I love the idea fido or fluffy has a real home environment rather than a cage in a shelter somewhere. But for me, because those animals are already in a good home environment, even if temporary, I'd much rather adopt from a public shelter where at least I feel like I've done a rescue of a sort. Still, Second Chance does what it should: finds homeless animals a good home. They're worth visiting. read more

My family and I came here after months of searching for good shelters to adopt a cat until we stumbled across Second Chance. The moment we stepped in, we were greeted with the friendliest lobby kitty (named Chiquita) and staff! The place (with rooms similar to almost a house style) was accessible so that we could have comfortable spaces to bond with the adoptable cats. We had many questions and when answered, you could tell that the staff truly knew and cared about the cats! Cats were all up to date and were made sure that they were healthy before going to their forever homes. We came back in many, many times after that and finally settled on our kitty who has now been with us for 2 years! read more

So we went here to just look and see if we could find what we were hoping for, an orange female who was cuddly and maybe 2-4 years old. We found a tortie who was sweet and would lick us but not let us pick her up. We found out she has a sister who was just as sweet with no tail and the pair was adorable. We didn't want to split them so we kept looking. One of the workers encouraged us to look at the male orange cats so we thought, okay why not just look at them. I love kitties of all kinds. Then we met Redmond. He was FIV +, orange, giant, so soft and soooo cuddly. Of course I instantly fell in love. Now I didn't want a male and I wasn't so sure what FIV was but it sounded scary and like it'd cost me a lot of money if I adopted him. I was wrong. FIV is feline immunodeficiency virus, all it means is his immune system is a little weaker than other cats and he's more susceptible to colds and other illnesses (not a big deal since he'll be an indoor cat). It can't be passed from him to my dogs, it's a cat to cat virus and it can only be passed if there's deep bite wounds during a fight. Otherwise, no issue. Normal cat, normal vet visits, Normal pet cost, no worries. So I went through the process of adopting him, the day I went to dog test him went great! He tried to snuggle my dog and other wise didn't have a care in the world that she was there. Perfect for them both. Only down side to this is that he has a limp shoulder for some reason that happened over night, so instead of letting us take him and have to worry about the vet bills, they're keeping him and taking him to the vet until he's 100% and then we can bring him home. Not only did they find us the perfect cat, they educated us and opened our minds on stereotypes/ assumptions, they saved us the money of adopting a cat and then immediately having to take him in to the vet for something that may or may not be expensive. So thank you Second Chance for not only giving us the blessing of Pumpkin (Redmond) but taking into all counts of consideration for immediate help to our new kitty and the financial consideration of new pet owners! read more

Dear Sirs, Having read your feedback, there seem to be far more positive comments than negative. That said, whomever came into the shelter and just 'took' those puppies from a couple which was ready to adopt was just wrong. First of all, they were there first. Second, that individual should have asked questions about the couples ability to care for the animals, as this always concerns SC. And wow....you could have taken two more animals who were on the chopping block? The idividual who took the actions they did made a gross mistake. Fortunately, the rest of the feedback was so positive it offset that feedback about the puppies. Someone else commented on your website. I know it is all volunteers, but guys ... your website really needs work. I am looking for a cat to be a companion to my 4 1/2 yo Russian Blue female, Lil'bit. Oh...btw, I am on disability, and have a lot of time on my hands. I used to build, set up, repair, etc., computers starting back in the mid 90's. I was on line before the rest of the world even had a home computer. I can work on them...(set up web sites) and such. :-) I might be willing to help you. SC is an amazing pet organization. My husband and I as well as my parents have adopted four or five cats from them over the years. They have weekend hours where you can come in and socialize with the kittens and cats and dogs and there's no pressure to adopt. An adoption counselor generally is in each room (there are a number of rooms for cats based on their personalities, etc) to answer questions you have about specific animals. SC holds regular fundraising events and supply drives. They also offer education on feline diseases like FIV and FeLV - I'm sure they do the same for dogs. If you adopt an animal but it doesn't do well in your home, then they will take the animal back. All in all, this is a great organization made up of people who really care about animals! read more

I adopted the sweetest tom cat from here a couple months ago! This shelter is extremely thorough and well respected for it. I was able to meet as many cats as I wanted and was also able to get alone time in a room with the cats to see if they had any interest in me. The fees were very affordable and a great bargain for getting a cat that's up to date on shots, N/S, and microchip, etc (if I'm leaving anything out). The staff was extremely welcoming and helped me to find a good match for a furmate. read more

Staff is friendly and professional, although our experience was marred by a surprising and unforeseen event. We had applied to adopt one of their dogs, and our application was accepted by the foster family. One day after we applied, we received a call saying the foster family was keeping the dog and subsequently we were no longer eligible (even for consideration). This was entirely unexpected, and ruined what could have been a great home for the dog (I work as a Veterinary Technician and have access to excellent medical care and facilities). A waiver should be given to the foster families of the adoption agency outlining the definition of "foster," and removing them from eligibility. Otherwise it comes down to false advertising. If that was done, I would recommend this location. As it is now, I won't be using their services again, and would recommend with severe reservation. read more

I'm sorry that I have to give an animal shelter one star, but I had a very unethical interaction with this organization yesterday and will be actively encouraging people to stay away from them. My husband and I were at a local county shelter and had been playing with four older puppies for a while. We had decided we wanted to adopt two of them. This was a shelter with a high kill rate that said it was in urgent need of adoptions. While we were playing with these dogs, someone from Second Chances came in with shelter workers and told us they were taking the dogs right now. I was surprised and asked if we could adopt two of the dogs. Second Chances said no, but we could apply to adopt from their organization in 10 days. I was astounded for a few reasons. (1) if Second chance wants to save dogs' lives, then they should have been happy to see us take two dogs. (2) if we adopted two of those dogs, then second chance could have taken two additional dogs and saved them (then FOUR dogs would have been saved!) (3) my husband and I did not adopt any dogs that day because the two we bonded with were taken. now, because of second chance, two dogs in that high kill shelter probably were euthanized due to lack of room. (4) second chance actually hurt the adoption chances of the puppies we wanted to adopt. The fact is that many people want young puppies, puppies go fast and are not at risk of being euthanized even at high kill shelters. However, the older a dog gets the less likely it is to be adopted. These particular puppies were already fairly large and a bit older, and my guess is that in two weeks when they are available at second chance they will be even less likely to be adopted (not to mention that second chance does not appear to do a good job keeping up its website, so who knows if they will ever even post these dogs' pictures). (5) finally, the less you can change a dog's environment, the better. Like humans, dogs can have psychological damage, PTSD, etc. it would have been better for the dogs' mental health to go straight to their forever home, rather than go to another shelter/ foster parents and then, maybe, get adopted. For all of the above reasons, I feel ethically impelled to speak out about this organization, because those little dogs lost a chance at a great home. My husband and I are responsible pet owners, and we love dogs. We have a huge .7 acre fenced yard, no kids, we both work from home and have lots of time for a dog, we collectively make $230,000 so we have disposable income to spend on a dog. We are in the market for a dog because our beloved dog, Lily, passed away a few months ago (at 12 years old) after a battle with lymphatic cancer, on which we spared no medical expense. We adopted Lily at 5 months old from a shelter, 11.5 years ago. We were totally obsessed with Lily, and would be for future dogs. Had we adopted those dogs, we would have immediately made sure they had a clean bill of health ( and spared no expense, whatever the health outcome), Socialized them at the dog park and dog events around town, taken then to obedience and agility training classes, set them up with play dates with our two neighbors' dogs, and just generally have been obsessed with these two new dogs as well. Our hobby was spending time with Lily, and would be for the new dogs. I believe my husband and I are the ideal dog owners. read more

Potential Adopters BEWARE. First impressions are powerful, and from the moment I walked in the door, I was impressed by a blatant rudeness and arrogance of staff; a wrongful bias and presumption; and an obvious reluctance on their part to even allow me to view the cats due to my one remark that I might let the cat out occasionally to play in the yard. The place was an absolute mess. There was paperwork and stacks of junk strewn throughout the rooms, messy litterboxes, dried out canned cat food lying out, and signs asking folks to let them know which cat had thrown up in the room while you were visiting because they couldn't figure it out. Yet, these folks had the presumptuous arrogance to assume that they could take better care of these cats than anyone else. read more

The staff and volunteers who run this shelter truly care about the animals they rescue. They worked with us to find the perfect match and were beyond awesome throughout the process. I love that fact that once an animal is in the program, they are in for life and do not get put down if it turns out the animal is not adoptable, and they actually put a lot of effort into seeing all of the animal are healthy and get proper medical care. Because of this, I decided to become one of the volunteers, and I just fall more in love with the place every time I volunteer or visit.
