He emailed shortly after and gave me his cell number. We discussed my problems and he arranged to come to my house on a Saturday afternoon. It took him a while to sort everything out and he did. I have put off writing this review but dealing with my sloooow laptop reminded me to warn others. I am sure some of these good reviews were written by his friends, not actual customers. Months ago, my laptop didn't seem to be running well so my husband had this man look at it to improve the speed, fix any issues. It seemed ok initially (maybe I was hopeful so wasn't noticing the truth), but then was worse than before he touched it. I have no idea what he did. I didn't go back to him for further help because clearly he doesn't know what he is doing and I didn't trust my machine with him. Sadly, because of that, I have been nervous to have anyone else work on my machine so am putting up with a very subpar machine that is only 1 year old. read more

First let me share what he will tell you so you can save your money- get Malwarebytes and ensure it does a full scan. I spoke with him for 50 min today and that was the only tech input I got. We were chatting. He talked about his childhood, his electrical plan, solar, his theory on wildfires, his travels, his cat, etc. I didn't mind talking with him. I minded that he did not mention he charges by the hour and counted chat time as work time. Since he barely helped, when we were done and I had Malware running I said I'd like to compensate you. I felt it was a gesture and that's it since he didnt do any troubleshooting or provide any real assistance. He charged me $80. I was in a rush so paid. Afterwards I contacted him to explain my dismay at such a charge and to ask for a fair price. Nope. No change. Unscrupulous and unfair business practices. Go elsewhere. read more

Ralph is a true professional, and gives good service. In my case he arrived Sunday Morning, as agreed, and stayed the full nine hours it to transfer the files from my old computer to my new computer. During that lengthy process (it would probably gone much quicker if I had USB 3.0 connections) Ralph filled me in on various aspects of the computer and programs I was using and demonstrated a knowledge of the complexities of computer hardware beyond my imagination. Ralph has helped me with many technical matters and i think he is excellent at what he does. He's helped me purchase about 10 separate computers, printers, all-in-one fax combos, dvd players, HD TV before it was as widespread as it is, telephone systems, cell phones, MP3 players, etc. He's also repaired various disk and system crashes and upgraded my systems. I really don't understand how he finds the time to keep up with all the details in PC-type magazines, or how he knows just when a particular part, system or program is being offered through rebates or on-sale at Costco, Fry, or other tech vendors. I wish I'd had the experience that the others' who posted here had. I had a phone consult with Ralph- admittedly, it's been quite some time. I don't doubt that he's a good computer guy, but it wasn't a good match for me. The short version is that after I'd been talking to Ralph for a while, he said and I'm paraphrasing here- "well this is where I ask you for your credit card for my time- which is $100 for this hour". HUH? I absolutely, 100% expect to pay for any service I use, BUT: #1: At no time did he say we were "on the clock". I thought I called someone to ask questions and then if he did any work or provided any service or expertise, we would discuss his rate. But, realistically, only about half of it (and that's a very generous estimate) was specifically doing any kind of troubleshooting- but the rest of the conversation, he was telling me how it would be difficult to help me because he gets around on a bike and that he lives pretty far from the city and doesn't actually have a city office. I lived just south of the city at the time. His guess was that my hard drive was dead. One solution he had was for me to go to Costco and buy a computer, transfer all my stuff to that computer and then return it once I had replaced the hard drive on my own computer. What?!? Sorry- That's unethical. Can you imagine phoning your auto mechanic about a problem and he tells you to clean off the battery cable connections and that doesn't resolve the issue. Then he tells you to go to the store, buy a battery, hook it up, then bring the car to him to see what the problem was and then return the battery to the store. And, then he charges you $100 for that phone call. I was really caught off guard and should have stated my concerns. I did not and just gave him my credit card. I felt gouged. I should say that I found another computer consultant to help me. He came to my house, took my computer, installed a new hard drive, re-installed various utilities, did a bunch of other cleaning up, brought it back, set it up- answered several questions and the bill was $240.00 (a deal, I'd say!). He charges $160/hour and only charges for actual facetime, not when the computer is running scans, etc. A much better fit for my needs. **I did receive a message from this business and I definitely had the experience I wrote about- so if his impression is that I'm not a client of his, then yes, after that I did not want to be a client of his. As I said above, I lived south of the city at the time of this phone transaction- so that is why he doesn't find a Calistoga client in his files. And, it was quite some time back and not in the last month, also as stated above. In any case, I don't want to re-hash this, so will leave it at that. I posted this honest review simply so that other Yelpers would have another person's experience. read more

I have hired Ralph several times for large and small projects, from transferring data from my old computer to the new one, to successfully resolving quite a few seemingly insurmountable software messes. Ralph had helped me with my Mac for several years, mostly over the phone, but I recently had problems that needed a house call. I couldn't always connect to my DSL and Ralph correctly concluded that it was the config of the network port in the control panel. He changed it to DHCP (?) and all was well; I'm using the router so I can share the DSL. I'm among the computer impaired, and don't totally understand how he knew or how he fixed it, but he did! I was always impressed how he would guide me to the store where I could get the best computer for me for the least cost. And possibly even more importantly, Ralph helped me through two full blown computer crashes, even guiding me on how best to deal with the people who handled my extended warranty. I thought I'd been hacked. I found Ralph on Yelp and called in a panic. With a calm, friendly manner, he asked a few questions and to my great relief explained that what appeared to be a hack was a in fact due to lack of processor capacity in my very old Mac (which is too old to be upgraded to the latest IOS). Because there's no "cure," he then recommended several security apps I'd never heard of, including one specifically good for old Macs. Wonderful service, reasonable rates, super nice guy. I'll make this short and to the point. My Outlook crashed on Friday night so I went to Yelp found Ralph called him at 9:00am Sat. he called me back within fifteen minutes gave me the option of him coming out or me going to him, I went to him. Within one hour, while I waited, he not only got Outlook up and running but got my email coming into my Iphone and other things. I would say that Ralph is first a really nice helpful person who definitely cares about getting your computer up and running fast and second very professional computer tech.
