Above and beyond incredible service. Luis is old school, he looks out for you and has your best interests at heart. I went to Luis for screen repair bc my laptop fell onto the floor on the side and the screen cracked, and blacked out with dead pixels on the screen. Luis repaired it for me so fast with incredible turnaround time within days. List of why Luis goes above and beyond: 1. Cared about saving me money whenever possible and was very transparent about prices, talked me through details and options for replacement screens and gave pros and cons of each while comparing prices. He sent screenshots of prices and receipts as well as FedEx tracking. (As an aside, I mentioned I might Lyft to his place to send the laptop and he said 'don't do that, so expensive, take MUNI and save money!') 2. After receiving my laptop, he also saw my right speaker had bad sound (I've been meaning to get this fixed for a while and have been putting it off) and offered to fix it himself. He was going to do it for an additional $50 then later just charged me $25 bc the speaker he found wasn't "perfect" according to him but to me it sounds great haha. This saved me so much instead of going to Apple without warranty which would have been at least $200 bc from what I read, they usually insist on replacing the entire "top case" and not just single speakers. Wow, thanks Luis! 3. I am badly organized and don't maintain my storage well; when I went to pickup he gave me many tips on what to fix and how to free up more storage, then organized my desktop for me in front of me. Hate to write a negative review and truly confused by all the positive reviews. Luis was generally kind but quick to anger, which was weird for me to have to manage/not walk on eggshells with him as part of his temperament and EXTREMELY FORGETFUL. He locked himself out immediately when I first met up with him with the keys on the bench we sat on inside and would repeat tons of information we already discussed and agreed on such as meeting time etc. His anger around why I wouldn't share my password felt unnecessary and seemed like he took it personally. These were already red flags and made me hesitate, but how he presented my problem felt like I needed help fast (water damage). This is all fine and I'm not judging him as a person (actually feel compassionate towards it), but these behaviors and unprofessionalism/difficulty working with him when I'm paying him and entrusting my $2.4k laptop to him is not something I should need to manage. He works out of his home as a solopreneur. His general navigation with the laptop when I went to get it was a strange mix similar to watching a somewhat computer illiterate elderly person navigate and be confused about how the external monitor/keyboard/etc connected and still worked/didnt work but have brief more clear glimpses/capabilities in repair in some cases and was insistent on driving/being the navigator slowly when I was simply trying to navigate so we could save his time. He was kind in trying to work with me since I did not want to share my password but again, it was somewhat tense due to this and I don't know how forgetful/careful he was during the work he actually did. This level of work needs a sort of clarity of mind and it did feel like I was working with an elderly person who wasn't clear all the time. Unfortunately he did the exact sort of cleaning method that permanently damaged my laptop further beyond repair (ultrasonic cleaning) and removes evidence of where the actual damaged parts are. He did not mention that this would potentially damage it further and also remove the possibility of fixing the board or I would not have agreed. This is an outdated technique and other shops said this did irreparable damage that made fixing the logic board impossible (they looked for a good 3 hrs). Luis actually convinced me that the logic board could not be repaired either way and the whole thing would need to be replaced if any part stopped working, so he lied about this directly. In fact he repeatedly emphasized that no one does any board repairs (completely made up fact) and cleaning was the only way to try else board replacement. He also did not test if my screen was damaged when this is a standard test at other shops and made it seem like it was not possible. The service basically rushed me to quickly get it more damaged. Luis called it a successful repair because the laptop still turned on and could be used with an external monitor (which was how it was before I sent it to him). That's not a success to me. I trusted his judgement and what he was sharing out of goodwill and regret it. Unfortunately I paid in cash and he would not refund me a single cent. Please do your due diligence of researching everything he says and probably/definitely go elsewhere. I am a v clear headed person unlike him, so he also remembers incorrectly (for example I did end up using icloud sync and he cant remember this, which is a random detail he mentioned for no reason). And I know for sure he mentioned that even Apple does not do microsoldering, to imply that no one does and on n on about this and how it doesn't work well. I paid $225 (which I had to bargain down from 250 because again to me my laptop still doesnt work) and had to get my logic board replaced elsewhere for $950 when it could've been a much cheaper fix. The other shops were surprised at how amateur the work was with sophisticated ai generated reports detailing the work. whatever rate of success he mentioned should not mean it actually makes things worse. pictures beforehand dont undo the damage of removing microcomponents washed away. There was no threat from my end, I just stated I would be sharing my real review (that I felt inclined to write even without any final hiccups) and this was after a lot of back and forth trying to reach any middle-ground with 0 offer to refund even a single cent, so what he replied with is completely inaccurate- he would have certainly not refunded me under any circumstances, not just cuz I mentioned a review ofc. Here it is, and I think I am a very fair reviewer. A discerning person can tell his reply only has deflection. Again, I am not judging him as a person but as a business owner I'm paying to be professional and dependable and accountable. That failed. Gaps are addressed by being accountable to damage you've done, not any other way. Accountability here is a refund and apology for the costly oversights. Not Just a Battery Swap: Real Service from Mac Repair SF I have a late 2019 MacBook Air that I tote back and forth to substitute teaching jobs in the city. Lately, when unplugged from external power, it's been shutting down until I reconnect and restart it. The issue seemed like it should be the battery, but after lots of Google searches and with no warnings from the Mac, I was stumped. Still sure it was the battery I started looking around for a repair. My impression is that lots of places can swap out an old battery for a new one. Prices I saw began around $150 and went beyond. Reviews were a little mixed, and one of the better-known vendors I've dealt with didn't even return eMails or pick up the phone. I did find one vendor, though, with good reviews and who did get back to me. It was Luis at Mac Repair SF. Luis ran my Mac through some checks over the phone, had me send a couple of screenshots, and spent time to learn as much as possible before bringing the laptop to him. Luis investigated, let me know my battery had "bubbled - a very bad sign" and did a lot more work to be certain of the problem. AND although I didn't understand it all, he was careful to explain what he was finding and never treated me as if I knew nothing. In fact, as he worked along and we talked a couple of times, I felt that I was investigating right along with him. Luis found a couple of other little issues and fixed them along with installing a new, quality battery. My 2017 iMac suddenly died. I did not have a backup external drive, so I thought I had lost all my files. I immediately bought a new iMac, then called Luis of Mac Repair SF to try to recover the data and also set up my new iMac. He set up a house call for the next day. He estimated that it would take 1-2 hours to thoroughly set it up, and it ended up exactly 1.5 hours, at a very reasonable hourly rate. He was patient in answering all my questions, and very knowledgeable in the setup essentials. At my request, he bought and set up an external storage drive for me, so I won't lose all my data in the future. He also set up my wireless printer and log into my iCloud account, among many other customized things that I wouldn't have thought of and which, if I had, would have taken me hours. It was money well spent. Then he took my old iMac back to his shop to try to retrieve the data, giving me quotes depending on whether or not he could retrieve it. The only negative part of the experience was that he was so busy that he could not get to my data retrieval until a few days later. However, that turned out to be a blessing because after he left, I logged into my iCloud account, and it turned out that it contained almost all my presumed lost files! My laptop was terrorized by a full bottle of water that my cat spilled and sat open for what could've been an hour before I saw what happened. I sent a request through yelp and then an hour later called Luis and left a voicemail. A few minutes later he called back, took the time to know my name, and gave me a diagnosis and quote. He is realistic and doesn't sugar coat anything to give you false hope. He even gives you advice on how to move forward regardless of whether you would continue with his service. Amazing guy to work with and to get to know. I had some parts replaced and he gave me the additional tools that came with the parts free of charge. He spent three days fixing my laptop which included waiting for the parts to arrive. As a side note, should the parts not have worked, he would not have charged me for them. He sends you pictures throughout the process and it's clear that not only is he skilled but he is equipped as well. Microscopes, sanitizing with sound waves, you name it. I don't know how he does it all and with such quality and care. He explains everything with simple language that made me understand and trust his expertise. Ultimately, despite short circuiting and swimming in water, my laptop made a complete recovery except for the internal stains on the screen (some of which may disappear with time). Part of it is luck and I may be biased, but I think the outcome would've been different had I gone to another person who didn't have the time or skills that Luis had. I called Luis when I realized my late 2017 iMac was acting strangely, booting up slowly and shutting down unexpectedly. I hadn't done a backup of my most recent project data and I was a little anxious about losing it. Over the phone, Luis calmly walked me through a backup of my troubled iMAC in a friendly and professional manner. From my description of my machine's symptoms, he predicted that my hard drive was failing. After a successful backup, we spoke on the phone. He gave me details of what to expect to fix my iMAC, a reasonable quote for the repair and the name and cost of a new drive. The replacement drive he suggested was actually a better hard drive than my original drive. He picked up my iMAC and performed a technical diagnosis at his shop and learned that, indeed, my hard drive was failing. He kept me informed of each step in the repair, cleaning and and drive installation in a timely manner by text and by phone call. When he returned my iMac, not only did we do a thorough 'test drive' of it, but he introduced me to additional software and routines to improve my own use of my now better performing machine. I first came to Luis for a computer battery issue. The fix lasted about 10 months so I reached out again for the same issue. Then I found out without informing me, he installed a refurbished battery and charged me full price, falsely claiming my model doesn't support new ones. He told me it was still under warranty but insisted he couldn't provide the service for free, so I still had to pay for a new battery. After some back-and-forth, he 'fixed' something unrelated and charged me again, but the battery issue persisted. At this point, I'm tired of paying without getting the problem solved. So I went to a reputable place, got a new battery, and my computer has been perfect since. If the battery is under warranty, why should the customer still have to pay for it? Luis is awesome and ethical. I have an Apple MacBook Pro pre 2011; I use it strictly for sending my audition clips to my agent, manager, and casting directors. I also use it for word-processing; hence, it is repurposed to light duty operations, but plays a major and heavy role in my day:day work-flow. I mistakenly put an SD card into the optical drive and couldn't get it out. I contacted Luis; and, he gave me a very reasonable quote to get the SD card out. This mishap turned out to be a blessing. I purchased my MacBook Pro, brand new from Apple, back in 2010; hence, it has all OEM parts and never serviced. Lou gave me some recommendations for upgrading the unit; so, it will perform faster and provide more storage for my audition video clips. He gave me a quote, and I accepted. Turns out the OEM battery swelled after 13 years of use and interfered with my track pad. Lou replaced it, and he calibrated the battery, which took a couple of days to calibrate. He also migrated all my data from the old 356 MB hard drive to the new hard-drive. Now my MacBook Pro has 1 terabyte of space, new calibrated battery, new optic drive, 16 gigs of RAM, and all tuned up. I had been using it for 13 years; hence, I did not notice the natural degradation. Now, it runs super fast, and the trackpad is super responsive. A wonderful blessing from a mishap. Now, I don't have to move all my audition clips to a separate storage disk nor to the cloud; and, I don't have to spend a couple of thousand dollars for a new MacBok Pro that's purposed to doing only light duty operations.
