I have mixed feelings about my 1 and only time I will come here. I was visiting and needed to get chips & had always shopped at Ralph's when I used to live here. Good produce, good pricing, baked goods, well stocked and clean. Good experience UNTIL I had to check out. Like the other reviews, they are now owned by Kroger, and only had 1 live cashier line and the rest is self serve with only 1 helper for 6 stations. Of course I've used self serve before, but they seemed so unorganized and the scanners weren't working properly, the lines got backed up and took FOREVER! The 3 stars is only for their pricing and product, but a ZERO for customer service. read more

I was charged twice for one large package of toilet paper costing $26.99. I caught the mistake and had a clerk refund the difference. When I got home I checked the receipt again and discovered the refund was wrong and had to return back to store. They issued me another refund but didn't seem to care about the inconvenience put upon me for their error. I could've been overcharged almost $30 for groceries which are already expensive. Nobody should shop here until the businesses take some action to clear out the homeless and clean up the walkways and parking lot. It's gross. Ralph's has notoriously horrible wait times in line, you have to pay attention to the cashiers as they ring you up, make sure you get your cash back. Just stopped by this grocery store to pick up a few items. Should've been a quick in and out but there was only one cashier versus the many self checkout stations. When I was finally at the front another patron holding a 12 pack of beer asked to go in front of me. Normally I would've said yes, but there was already a long line and I didn't think it was fair for just one person to make that decision... after all, there were at least 5 other people in line and most of us had already been waiting for nearly 10 minutes. I asked the cashier if they could open up another aisle but she said she already put in the request with the manager. She apologized and said she was working as fast as she could. I hate the idea that this one employee felt the pressure to hurry. Ralph's really should invest in people rather than machinery. read more

This Ralph's location is definitely one of the smaller ones but it is pretty decent. This location is walking distance from my place which is why I come here almost everyday and I usually find what I need every time. They have a great selection of everything from groceries to alcohol to snacks and frozen foods. I love that they carry a lot of organic brands now and the prices are great and cheaper than other grocery stores when you use your Ralph's card! Btw, the Ralph's card is completely free and you can save a lot of money so be sure to sign up when you shop there. You don't even really need to fill out the form right then and there so it's really no hassle. They also have Coinstar and Redbox here as well. The staff is awesome. Store managers are friendly and helpful, also give you the benefit of a doubt when you have an issue with an item you have purchased. They are smart enough to know you are just going to spend the refund here anyway. The pharmacy staff is wonderful. I have never had any bad experiences and have used this pharmacy for over 10 years. Costco is certainly cheaper, but Debbie in the pharmacy is top notch. The store is generally clean inside. If you see food out of code they will handle it, or close to expire date you can ask for a discount and they are pretty willing. The only downsides are the amount of clutter in the pathways and aisles, displays that make it impossible for more than one person at a time to walk down aisles. Second downside is the panhandling and homeless but the store employees are great at dealing with it in the store. It's once you get in the parking lot that you'd better watch your bags and your person. At night it seems kind of sketchy out front, but I have come late and not had any problems. read more

This has been my go to grocery store for 18 years. Awhile ago, they began a push to get customers to use their self-serve kiosks, while limiting the number of open cash registers to encourage that. That effort has been taken to an extreme as this morning, and perhaps now regularly, they chose to have NO CASH REGISTERS OPEN. To be sure that is accurate, I asked an employee of they really had no pen registers, and I was told that was indeed true. It is clear that this company cares little about what the customer wants, and that they are focused on reducing costs through what is an obvious effort to reduce their staff. While sometimes a self-service kiosk can work for me, there are times when I want the fulls service, and I will take my grocery shopping to a different store. read more

Waited in line at the proper markers at checkout. The customer in front was finished and moved to the end of the counter to pick up his items. Naturally I walked up since the cashier started scanning my items. However, the customer in front asked about his change. The cashier seemed to have forgotten. He only rang up two of my items but proceeded to ring up all of my items before handing him his change. (He could of cancelled what he rung up and hand the customer his change, but no) The customer of course stayed at the counter waiting until he got his change. So when he finished our transaction he immediately went to give the change of the customer in front me. Our items were still on the belt closest to the cashier and the customer before us still had their stuff on the counter as he counted his change to be sure. Instead of waiting and giving time for the both of us to move and get our things. He immediately took the customer behind us. Now my things were between two different people. The only way to reach them is if I reach over the counter. I am not that tall, so reaching over would mean to really stretch out my body over. Not sure what the cashier was thinking. He just kept ringing up the customer behind us. Fed up of course, I reached over the counter to grab my things making sure it doesn't get mixed with the customer behind us. Note, the customer in front of us was still at the end of the counter. Maybe the cashier was new or nervous, but either way he should of waited before taking the next customer. He did nothing to follow the rules that his store has to ensure distance and safety. This review is solely based on the service of the cashier. read more

I'm not happy with the self service lines. Kroger makes enough money to keep employing cashiers however I had a issue with the bakery and the manager Rodney stepped up and handled the situation with respect and went out of his way to make the issue more then right. HECTOR in the deli doesn't like his job much and was very rude from get go , when I'm just trying to ask for groceries . Besides the fact he didn't cut my ham the way I asked twice he also wasn't wearing his mask on his nose lol , when he was done I said thank you and told my daughter "this kid doesn't like his job" he turns to stare at me and I say yeah you !! I do not like giving only one star because it reflets on the entire store. This is not the case. This refers to the deli depatrment only. First, rarely is there some one behind the counter to help and you wait several minutes until some one appears from behind the doors. However, the biggest reason for the one star is they can't slice cheese! Apparently, the cheese slicer has not been replaced for three weeks as of this writing 8/2/21. Can you imagine, no slicer no cheese! I do not like packaged deli or cheese and prefer sciced to my specifications. The department manager was non-chalaont when I asked him about it. If I was losing business because of a slicer I would be on the phone every day, twice a day asking for a slicer. I always go to this Ralph's as it is very closed to my house. I usually use the self serve check out, but today I decided to stay in line to pay with the cashier because too many heavy things in my cart. The man that rang me up named NORMAN is very rude. I noticed him being rude with the customer in front of me when he was ringing him up. The man politely asked if he can just ring up one can of the Gatorade, times 8, because there's so many to take out of the cart to place on the counter and Norman rudely say NO! he can't do that. When it was my turn to pay, I politely asked NORMAN (cashier) if he can let me know if the chips (Doritos) are ringing up $1.99 each if I buy 4?. I wasn't even finish with my sentence and he cut me off and saying very rudely that I HAVE TO WAIT!!!. Wow!!! this kind of people shouldn't be working in this industry if they'll be very rude to customers. This is not the way to treat people especially when we spend money. Beware of NORMAN. read more

Like others have stated this location has gone almost entirely self checkout. I'm totally against self checkout because it cost people jobs and I'm not working for Ralphs. The corporate mentally is we'll open one lane and the line will be so long the customers will use the self checkout. I enjoy customer service, I'm not bagging my own basket. How about the elderly customers? Today I went there for the last time. I waited in line patently to checkout and the scanner went down. There were no other lanes open on a Monday morning. The customer ahead of me had unloaded a full cart of groceries on the belt and we were stuck! They had to put them back in the cart and move to another lane. Kroger (Ralphs parent company) is trying to cut jobs and costs as they head into union negations. Fortunately there are other markets in the area I can spend my money. Kroger is killing this location I feel bad for the people I've seen there for years who will probably lose their jobs to corporate greed. read more

This review is for Ralphs 14440 Burbank Blvd. Van Nuys CA 91401 I didn't think any pharmacy could be worse than CVS Pharmacy on Venture (Sherman Oaks) but this one proved me terribly wrong. The pharmacist increased the price of my medicine which I believe is because I had a Pro Air Discount card (saves $20.) I have gotten my medicine there before and the price was $10 less without the discount. Then the pharmacist was rude when I tried to complain and wouldn't let me speak. I finally interrupted her and told her the price the highest priced in the valley (I've been taking this for over 4 years) and I was going to transfer to a different pharmacy. Important note. I had the prescription transferred via phone from CVS to them. Yesterday I tried to transfer to a different pharmacy. The pharmacist told me that someone at Ralph's canceled my prescription. WTF! This is possibly illegal since I received and paid for my prescription. I called the store manager and talked to the district director and told him that I have already talked to an attorney and it is possibly illegal and I was planning to call the Better Business Association & Pharmacist Association if this wasn't corrected immediately. The pharmacist got on the phone and blamed me for the problem saying I had two prescriptions for the same medicine and I cancelled one 6 months prior - bullshit, I picked up that one as well and it was $10 cheaper. End result - because I threatened to cause a legal problem my prescription was found and said to be transferred. NEVER AGAIN! read more

I was happy shopping here until today. I was two items over the express limit and thought it would be fine. Place wasn't busy at all anyway so I thought "no big deal!" WRONG! The cashier gives me a snippy attitude saying that I have to have under 15 even though I started to unload half of my items. Had to put everything back and lug my stuff to another line. Nobody was behind me and nobody entered her line after I was done checking out. Why you gotta be lazy? Why such attitude over two items? I have been a loyal Ralphs shopper for about 15 years, and I generally am pleased with their prices, item selection, and quality. Given that I drive past this Ralphs each day on my way to & from work, I would very much like to patronize this location. However, both the quality of the food and the customer service makes shopping here a very frustrating experience. Since this is a smaller store, it is not surprising that the selection is comparatively limited. However, that does not excuse the poor quality. For example, fruits and vegetables are consistently either bruised, overripe, or otherwise undesirable. In other sections of the store, items long past their expiration dates are left on the shelves. The worst part for me is the customer service. When I stop in on my way to work, the last thing I want is to be stuck in a line seven patrons long. But that is a common occurrence, with only a single line open and no self-checkout option. If a manager is close by, you would think that this would be quickly resolved, but apparently this is not seen as a pressing issue. If you are lucky enough to get to the front, more often than not the person scanning your groceries will have the demeanor of someone who would rather be in a dentist's chair undergoing root canal than working at their job. One positive thing about this location: there are not one, but two Redbox machines at the front of the store :) read more

Great market with a lot of selection. Produce is always fresh and the store is well kept. A large selection of items so I imagine you can find almost anything you need when following a dinner recipe. This location has a deli but they tend to be a bit slow. I've ordered a sandwich and had a bit of a wait. It's mostly because the people behind the counter are chatty. It's something I can easily let go however sometimes I'm just really hungry and just want my food. I'm sure everyoone out there feels that way once in a while. read more

Let me just say that this location isn't my closest, but it's on the way back from work so sometimes it's easier to go here. Easier doesn't always mean better though. I came here once with my mom, because all she wanted was some deli meat. She was at the deli and I was checking out the cheeses, so I was still within eye distance. My mom was waiting, no one came to help her, and then another woman stood by the deli and voila! It took 2 seconds for someone to notice her. The deli attendant very cheerfully asked the white woman, "Hi! How can I help you, sweetheart?" Completely disregarded that my mother had been standing in line for minutes. My mom didn't make a big deal about it, things happen, so she very politely said, "Oh, excuse me, I was here first," and the attendant ROLLED her eyes and said to the first white woman in a mocking tone, "OH! I guess she was here first," then looked at my mom and said, "What do you want?" How dare she make it seem like it was my mom's fault for her lack or attentiveness or decent customer service? I walked over and told my mom we would get it elsewhere, and we left. I was too mad to even say anything or complain. I went in again a few days ago, again to get some deli meat. There were 3 women at the deli counter, no line, and still no one could be bothered to assist the customers. After about 10 minutes, another woman came in and I had to stare her down so she could help me. Why does it always feel like they're always being so inconvenienced when you walk up to the deli counter?! I went to the front cashier to pay, and the customers in front of me were either new to food stamps or still trying to get the hang of what they can and can't buy with them. The cashier however, was really inconsiderate to their situation, and seemed bothered that they were there at all. Her tone towards the customers was that of an impatient parent berating their child for spilling juice. And when the cashier came across an item that wasn't covered by the food stamps, she started raising her voice so that everyone else in line could hear. It was ONE item. There was no need for her to try and humiliate the couple. The man asked if he could get some cheese instead and she scoffed and said, "I guess?!" and so the man went in a rush to get the cheese. While he did, the woman with him was still at the check out line, and the cashier woman turned to the rest of us in line (maybe like 2 or 3 of us) and said, "Sorry guys! There's nothing I can do. THEY have me stuck here and I have to wait for them" and raised the food stamps so that we could see what they were paying with. I couldn't believe it. The man came back with the cheese and they checked out and were on their way. The cashier then made jokes about them with the rest of the customers. No one really laughed. I looked at her and said I wasn't in a rush and it was more embarrassing to try and belittle someone than to actually help them out. She didn't say anything, but I'm sure she made me the new topic of her jokes when I left. The worst part: When I walked outside towards my car, the couple that paid with food stamps was near my car and the woman was crying, while the man tried to console her. She was clearly upset at the humiliation and experience she had been offered inside the store. The man looked at me not sure if I was going to continue the shame they had already been served by the cashier. I only smiled at him and told him the cashier was out of line and that it was no inconvenience to me that they were getting their food. No one should have to fear going into a grocery store. There seem to be multiple reviews about the customer service there and it's unfortunate. Never will I go back to this location again. It's just not worth it. read more

Went to Ralph's last night during business hours and went to the entrance. The door didn't open, so I tried to manually open the door only to realize that the door was locked. Right at that moment a female security guard started to yell something at me, but it was to hard to understand her. I just went to the other door and entered to do my shopping. The security guard told other guards to watch me. all because I tried to go into an entrance that was to be open during business hours. Locking the door is a fire hazard and a huge violation of fire safety laws. There is also a huge homeless problem in this area, most with mental issues that harass customers. I accidentally pulled the card out too soon. I said "argh, I hate this new system, plus it takes forever!" And he shot back with "Well, the reason it takes forever, is because the customer usually doesn't know what they're doing!" It seems like every time I go in there, this guy is miserable, and always has a negative "comment!" From now on, (after shopping here several times a week since it was "Hughes Market" back in the 70's), I will now go down the road to the Chatsworth store. So many times, I see a beautifully-marbled steak that is sliced paper thin because there's a giant slab of non-steak attached to it. And the whole thing is sold as "chuck steak." I'm going to leave a negative review for each day I'm home with a fever because I chose to buy groceries here. I'm not going to parties or bars or non essential stores. There is no excuse for me to become seriously ill smply because i was thinking about what to have for dinner instead of figuring out how to open the freezer without contaminating myself. Nobody should have to lie in bed with a everlasting migrane headache from hell and be too weak to even feed your pets. There are some people that covid affects worse than others. Then shared correct aisle for two items on my list. Then resolved pricing issue. Also knowledgeable about Ralph's app and assisted in downloading digital coupon. #2 Erika A. Very helpful and competent. Also knew the app (hurray, not the case for cashier staff at Vons) and helped me find, scan card bar code on my phone. Impressive. Also, efficiently completed price adjust on her own without needing to stop everything to wait for supervisor. Wish everyday and promo prices were lower, market leader rather than generally high. Deli Dept exhibits no sense of urgency, whatsoever. Don't try to take your lunch break to get a sandwich made because it will take too long! Myself and coworkers have been told many times, "we don't have that bread", "we're out of that cheese"...um, you're a grocery story. Go get it off of the shelf! Today, there were (3) ladies behind the counter. One was slicing meat for the customer that was 2 ahead of me. She was gabbing with the coworker and taking her time getting the customer served. The woman who was 2nd in line, gave up and walked away. I told the one woman my thoughts about the situation and she wholeheartedly agreed. I come here because I need to buy food. I drive a few minutes more to this Ralph's because the Ralph's 1 block away from me is worse. No matter what day of the week or time of day, there is always someone blocking the aisles with boxes because they are restocking. It's just very inconvenient to go all the way around for something I need when I'm on a time crunch. Especially when I have my 2.5 year old with me. Half the time, the lines to check out are long. Hate that. And I usually go around 10am on a weekday. Also, when I was checking out once, I had a Hispanic guy manager (too bad I don't remember his name) check me out and he did not know his produce codes. He kept asking the cashier next to him for the codes of the produce I was buying. And at one point, he just started guessing. I bought about $2 worth of green tomatoes, but when I got home I realized he charged me for celery instead, that was over $10! Had I not had my 2.5 year old with me, I would've drove back and asked them to correct the price. I was really pissed this guy was a "manager". Too bad I don't run on solar power. But I have to come here to buy food. Because no matter what, I ain't going to Vallarta. Eek! read more

I find it awkward to be writing a review for a grocery store...but jeez. I hope i'm not betraying my local grocery store that I go to daily by saying that the cashiers here need to grow up!! A bunch of teeny-boppers that are constantly flirting with each other, having personal conversations with each other while scanning my items...not even telling me my total price...I had to look on the screen and wait while holding my money. What the heck??!?! ON TOP of the annoying cashier service, there have been MULTIPLE times where I would buy something and come home, only to realize that the product had been EXPIRED. Granted, it is my fault for not checking the expiration date before I bought it...but DUDE!!! It is SO dangerous to a customers health to have YOGURT that expired a month ago, or Special K bars that expired 8 months ago...gross. read more
