The restaurant is located in an old house, so it doesn't look like much on the outside, and the inside isn't fancy. If you are looking for an amazing lunch special and love Thai food- head here immediately! I have not done dinner, and I do know prices, like most places are quite a bit higher-- But seriously week days from 11-- 3:30, for a little over $7 you will get soup, a small salad (wish it could be other than just ice berg lettuce, but the dressing is lovely), two pieces of Crab Rangoon and a huge portion of food! And the appearance is cute too-- basically an old house-- if I had one other suggestion, I would say put some Citronella candles or something like that to cut down on bugs in their lovely back patio! I have to admit I am one of those who "doesn't get it". Whether we are talking about the location and setting, or the approach taken by the staff, or even the menu, this place puzzles me a bit. I haven't had a lot of exposure to Thai cuisine, so that could be part of the problem, but most of the dishes I spotted while visiting looked as "Americanized" as other Asian places I visit. I will leave the issue of authenticity to other reviewers, and overall I didn't really have a bad experience- I just didn't quite feel comfortable or welcome for some reason... It's an interesting place for sure, but teetering dangerously close to an "Asian Aunt Martha's" for my taste. First impressions count; had I encountered this place in an unfamiliar city, I would have kept on walking. What I liked the most were the appetizers of all things. Everything we tried was made with care, and it was obvious that the food preparers took pride in their work. I had the drunken noodles with beef for my entrée. Overall, a very flavorful dish; I especially enjoyed the combination of spices; it had a great balance between sweet and savory. Thankfully, there wasn't much beef in there; it was tough and cut too thick considering its lack of tenderness, and when you add some nice thick, woody bamboo strips, well, you're going to spend a lot of time chewing. I had a problem mostly with the service, which could be described as spotty at best. While the wait staff was very friendly, every conceivable faux pas was executed during our visit; from serving salads without utensils to bringing us food intended for other patrons. When you combine those repeated issues with a kitchen which apparently cannot handle more than one order at a time, you are in for a long evening. Also, I did observe others who were seated long after we were receiving their food way before we did, so there's either a wait staff issue or the employees are playing favorites with regular customers. The final bill was very reasonable compared to other places we frequent. So my verdict is to try again, and I will sometime, but there are many other restaurants for me to visit, so it might be awhile, and in the meantime I will spend some time brushing up on this particular type of cuisine so I have a better idea of what to expect. And until then I give Rama Thai the benefit of a doubt. read more

Possibly it's because I live in the Chicago area where there are many excellent Thai restaurants and I expected more. The establishment is in an old house that somehow has escaped condemnation. The menu had items on it that I'd never seen before which seemed intriguing and so I placed my order. Tom Kah is a familiar friend but what I received was a total stranger. There was a chip of wood floating in the broth which had no flavor of galangal possibly because the hard wood like chip had no flavor to give. An appetiser of minced fish consisted of four flavorless lumps to dip in a sweet chunky sauce. Lost my appetite. The Swimming Angels had plenty of seafood but the vegetables were overcooked. The portion was a good size and what I left on the plate was plentiful as well. The strange part is cars were lining up outside looking for parking places. Do not go there! We just left after an hour of sitting at the table with no food served. We had to ask for water several times, we ordered appetizers and never got them and were told our dinner was coming out soon and was never delivered. We finally left...as we left we heard several other customers complaining of the lack of service and poor staff.. read more

My husband and I went here for dinner. I love that the location used to be a house. It makes it so cute and a little romantic. I had the fried rice which was so yummy. Their different hot oils and spices to add made it perfect. We got our food a level 2 heat and it wasn't hot at all. I will do 3 next time for sure! read more

Best Thai I've had in a while! I ordered the red curry and requested that there only be chicken, bamboo, and pineapple in it. The made this accommodation with no issue at all. My meal came with soup, a salad, and two crab rangoon. Everything was outstanding. I hope I can make it to Springfield again just for this meal! read more

This is my go to Thai restaurant in Springfield. The place is a bit offish if you've never been there before. It is actually a house that they had turned into a restaurant. Parking is in the street. I like the atmosphere, its a bit small, but you can also dine outside on the patio when the weather is nice. You start off with one of their side salads with a sweet, I want to say plum sauce. I've had a few different dishes here but I love their chicken pad Thai 3 stars, which is pretty spicy for me. It really is amazing. Their chicken mango curry is also delicious and I usually order that 2-3 stars depending how spicy I want it. Some people order 5 stars! Too spicy for me, lol. Overall, their service is always great and so is their food. Keep in mind that they close at 3pm and re open for dinner at 5pm.. Must give it a try!! read more

I hate giving less than wonderful reviews but in this case my experience warrants it. I will hit the low points 1. From the time our order was taken it took 40 minutes for any food to arrive including the soup we ordered. 2. When food arrived, the soup, appetizer and entrees came out all at once leaving no room on the table to eat. 3. The Tom Yum which is a soup I have eaten all across the country and made many times myself was way too sour with citrus and also too heavily flavored with lemongrass. It was totally one dimensional in flavor. Also the soups came with large pieces of hard dried galangal in them..... NEVER put inedible ingredients in a bowl of soup...EVER. I ate a few spoons and pushed it aside. 4. My Panang Curry came in a giant bowl with about a quart of overly sweet curry sauce with a few vegetables and about 8 shrimp. The flavor was fair but if I wanted soup I would have ordered more soup that I couldnt eat. I did look around and notice all of the curries were more like soup. The table next to us ordered curry with squid and I couldnt help but chuckle as the man made several futile attempts to cut through the large rings in his bowl but to no avail. 5.My wifes Crispy Duck was INEDIBLE. Every thai place I know that does this dish buys a pre-cooked half duck then throws it in the fryer to crisp. That was probably the case here but it was so fried that the meat was too hard to eat. It had literally been fried to the point that it couldnt be chewed. Our service team was very pleasant and friendly, but if you see someone not eating their meal you might ask if things are okay. I still left a 20% tip as the food was not their fault. Did I mention the piece of blue rubber band in my soup??? read more

This is a not a Springfield-relative review of Rama Thai, which would put it at six stars, but instead against all Thai places I've had. Overall, Rams Thai was very good. It's by far the best food I've had in Springfield, which is a huge blow to my beloved El Maguey (no judging). Get the crispy duck. Wow. The yellow curry was solid. If you love truly authentic Thai food, there are some things at Rama Thai that may disappoint...no sticky rice, no papaya salad, chicken satay wasnt grilled, etc. having said that, the peanut sauce was legit and tasty. Khao soi had excellent flavor, if not a tad too thick. Very large portions. Service was very good. Several Thai employees, which helps. The decor doesn't necessarily give off a Thai vibe and the tables can be pretty close to each other. Yes, the cash tip policy is annoying when paying with a ccard. Will surely go back, but not before Everyday Thai, which IMO is a step up. read more

Rama Thai is my favorite restaurant. Hands down. The atmosphere is homey, the food is consistently authentic and delicious, and the lunch specials (which are even available on Saturdays) can't be beat. This is my 'go to' when I visit my boyfriend. It's a couple blocks away from where he lives, very affordable, and they seriously have the best drunken noodles I've ever had. Don't choose even the medium spicy if you can't handle the heat, but no matter what you get you'll be impressed. They sell soda by the can, so keep that in mind when ordering refills. Wow. I had a feeling when I stepped through the front door of this restaurant that I had found my new favorite place to eat in Springfield. I was NOT mistaken! Atmosphere: 5 Stars! It's in a super-cute old...craftsman? Georgian? house. Very airy, well lit, and the tables are a good distance apart. We arrived around 6:30 on a Thursday and were seated immediately. It would have been terrible to have to wait, in that it smelled great! We even ran into a co-worker of mine (I know maybe 20 people in Springfield, so it seemed like a sign) which I take as a ringing endorsement. Service: 5 Stars! Excellent. It seemed like we had two servers (or maybe one was more of a busboy? Not sure) and they were both attentive and very friendly. We were indecisive (so many tasty-sounding things to choose from) and they were patient and polite about it - even when my Boo said we were ready when we technically hadn't decided if we wanted an appetizer. Food: 5 Freaking Stars!!! We got the tofu Pad Thai (I, like another reviewer, love the dish and use it as a litmus test of a new restaurant) and the Panang curry with Chicken. We couldn't remember which kind of curry we typically like (I'm not interested in yellow curries with potatoes) and this was a fantastic choice. Rich and flavorful, balanced (like I'd know!) and not too spicy - just a hint of a tingle. And the portions were ridiculous! It was the right decision to forgo an appetizer (although so many of them sounded amazing) because we barely made a dent in the two dishes we got. Definitely enough for two "omg I ate so much I feel kind of gross but in a good way because it was so delicious" meals per entree. Price: 5 Stars! Wow, all of that food (2 people x 2 meals) for like $21! A bargain for such great food! I CANNOT recommend Rama Thai enough - although I guess I am somewhat concerned it will become such a hot spot that it will get busy....but this is Springfield, and there are a million other "restaurants" people like to visit. Excellent food, extremely friendly waitress, fun location. Fast service (less than 10 minutes). Make sure and request your spice level or you will get mild (1 is Missouri hot, 4 is Thai hot - we got 3 and it was perfect). Also, appetizers are awesomely fast and hot. read more
