Ok so this was a very pleasant surprise for me, I felt good vibes as soon as I walked in the door. I'll tell you right now this spot is a true gem. I was greeted by what must have been the nicest people in the world, the owner & his wife. The place is pretty classy, awesome local beer selection, home made soda pop, mixed drinks, great atmosphere, wonderful blue grass music, nice people. I came to Rambling House after hearing all the raves about their homemade soda. It also has alcoholic beverages including craft beers, hard cider, and wine. There's live music on weekends, usually seems to be bluegrass. It resembles a saloon with barrels for tables. The bar is intimate yet it's not too cramped. I heard about the sodas but thought it was all they had. It also has a menu of alcoholic beverages. The beer and cocktail list is not big but everything that I've tried all have been good. A favorite was the house made ginger beer. The hard cider was crisp, had a sour tingle, and the right amount of sweetness. It also have some good cocktails. The Relentless Mule is like a Moscow mule but with bourbon. I still have to have a soda. The best soda is the sarsaparilla. Some other good ones are the blueberry and the cola. These are $2.50 which is not outrageous. The seating area is small but not crowded if there's not a show. It has a few tables in the front and barrels in front of the stage. If you come for the shows there's a cover of usually $5. The other thing is that its parking lot is near the old school the next block. I recommend coming before shows if you have to avoid the crowds. In the middle of the week it's pretty nice. The weekends aren't too crazy though and you can see some great live music. read more

This is one of the most unique and surprising places I have been to in Columbus. So pleasantly surprised! I have actually passed this place a million times and vowed I would never go here because it looks a bit sketchy on the outside, especially in the daytime. It transforms at night, people milling about outside, friendly light and door open welcoming you in. The service was prompt and very friendly, bouncer was nice and the music was awesome! My roommate and I got some signature drinks with soda that they make in house. It sounds strange but the gin and lemon-lime soda combo was good! Holy crap, the band we heard was amazing. It was a cover band I forgot the name of playing bluegrass music. Disclosure: I think bluegrass is ok, this band was just so good. We found out after the fact that the lead singer was only 17, but he had a deep raspy voice of a 35 year old. Impressed with the band, the bar and my drink. Will be back for more fun here! Check this hole in the wall out, you'll be more impressed than you think! read more

I don't know why it took so long for me to get here. I managed to arrive with no cover, and they had a three-piece set (bass, guitar, violin) with an occasional person jumping on the mic with them. Perfect volume level, and not a "oh god I should've worn earplugs or there is not a good place to listen or a place to go have a quiet conversation." Basically - it creates a great date atmosphere. Loud enough you can ignore your date if they suck, but not so loud you can converse. And good drinks so you can forget about the bad date (or kick the good date up a notch). I'm not going to repeat the other reviews going over the basics other than - yes, they make their own sodas, blah blah blah - but more importantly: - I had the reckless mule and the... something with whiskey and their sarsparilla. Both drinks were delicious, and it maintains a pretty intimate "up close" stage (which is awesome, but there was some drunk girl yelling the entire time - we get it, your friends probably call you 'the funny one' and you're just fuckin' hilarious - but shut it. If you're not on stage, no one wants to hear how funny you think it is to yell "play free bird!") I dig this place. I will return for more Sarsaparilla and whiskey. read more

Very unique establishment! An intimate setting for listening to talented bands and enjoying delicious cocktails and local craft beers. Rambling house pours a generous and strong drink-just the way I like it when drinks are about $7 (great value). A variety of all ages head to this venue. Cover charge is usually $5, which is ridiculously cheap considering the talent that plays at this venue. On saturday night, we caught Hebdo playing. A combination of moody blues, bob dylan, the doors and neil young all wrapped up into an extremely talented band that also played their own songs with incredible vocals. If youre looking for some great live music, welcoming staff and patrons, in a unique atmosphere. Check this place out. Cbus is really fortunate to have this place. read more

I've had my eye on Rambling House ever since I heard they make their own root beer, just never had a chance to stop in. Well, last night I had my chance. Parking is awful; they suggest parking at the school nearby. But that was the biggest downside I saw, and of course that's not their fault. I expected a crowd of hipsters, but found neither crowds nor hipsters. They were just opening up, and the owners (I assume) were super friendly and helpful. There is a serving bar, and lots of tables leading to a little stage. Decor is relaxed and homey, maybe a little like a saloon with the piano behind the bar, etc. It would be a great place to hear music. I was there for the root beer, though. Which turned out to be more of a sarsaparilla, and that's what they call it. A little sweet, a little minty, a little rooty. Heavy carbonation, light color like a lager, a nice balance that would be perfect for a hot summer afternoon. Think of it as a substitute for lemonade, or that crappy light beer you don't want anyway. They also had ginger beer, which tastes almost like the ginger ale I've made from fresh ginger. Very refreshing. Also "Columbus Cola," clear and with mild cola flavor. Those three are standards; they also had a cranberry cola from the rotating menu, which was a sort of citrus spritzer. Again, very refreshing. They sell all these in glasses or to-go cups, or they'll fill your growler. It's also available on tap at Weiland's, I hear. They'll put these in cocktails, and they have good beers too. I couldn't partake at the time, but it's a nice setup and it would be fun to hang out with the drink of your choice and relax. It's great to have locally made drinks, made from scratch by people doing what they love. They're just celebrating their first anniversary, and seem to be doing well. They deserve it. read more

Parking is available on the street or at the Helping Hands Center further down Hudson. Cover charge can be paid in cash or billed to your credit card when you order something at the bar. They have mixed drinks, ginger/root beer, and colas. The caramel apple soda is aptly named. It was a nice change of pace from the usual cola type of soda I drink. There is quite a bit of seating. There is a picnic table towards the front which seems to be the least popular seats. Get there early for the tables/side tables with chairs along the perimeter of the room. read more

Great place to visit and a great place for the neighborhood. We drank some good Elevator beer. Elevator had taken over the pour for a couple weeks. Nice pricing too. We listened to some nice jazz/blues guitar work from 6-8. That was followed by another show 8-10. We had no cover, but made up for it in the tasty beer. Food menu looks enticing, but we were going to another place for dinner. So had nothing except the tasty beer and good music. They also have homemade soda-pop. Pleasant enough environment, and the place is very small. We did have some issues with parking. It is basically in a neighborhood, so the parking is tight. I wonder if they are having issues with the neighbors. No telling. read more

We took our five year old to his first "concert"/live music here a few months back and it was so much fun. We saw a rainbow, ate yummy food truck food, and drank ginger ale. Nothing was too stuffy or judgmental about it - everyone was there to have a good time and share their music. read more

We happened upon this spot on a day trip through Columbus and I'm so glad we did. After living in Nashville we missed the bit of home that this place offered up through its honky think stage, cask bar top tables, small but robust bar, live music, pool tables, friendly faces and real good music. Their cocktails are great, too! They make their own sodas in house and boy do they know how to use them. We had a couple of delicious bourbon and soda concoctions that I wish I had the recipes for. The staff was welcoming and friendly. They even played an album I'd been dying to hear. We got there early in the night and it was pretty clear this place shines late in the evening. I can see why! If I lived in Columbus, I'd be sure to hang at this spot often. read more

After driving by forever stopped in for some drinks and tunes with some friends and thought it was a good experience. From the outside looking in the place doesn't seem like much, but once you get through the door you will be pleasantly surprised by what they have done with it. Unique, eclectic, one of a kind comes to mind when I try to describe. I love the barrel concept, I want it in my basement. So I tried the Sarsaparilla and a ginger something and drank both, but they didn't really didn't do it for me. Maybe i am just use to my old reliables and I am slow to change or adapt. When I go back I'll have to try something different to see if it is more appealing to my tastes. I understand the craft concept but thought both were a little pricey for something that didn't go down as easy as I had hoped. The service was great. The employees seemed positive and upbeat and tried to interact with all of the customers. The place was generally clean and everybody seemed to stay busy and nobody was standing around doing nothing. There is no missing the stage and I think the sound guy did a good job, it wasn't too loud that you couldn't talk. They don't have onsite parking so be prepared to park on the street in the surrounding neighborhood (no parking on Hudson) or at the school on the south side of Hudson. Beware of neighbors as I got yelled at for taking someone's parking spot on Duncan. (It is a public street with no reserved parking or permits needed - Not a Rambling House issue but may be an issue for their customers) I'll definitely come back, just hope I can find something that goes down as easy as the sounds that come from the stage and as fast as my wallet. read more

Not at all what I expected--and thank Gaga it wasn't... I'm not sure why I expected hipster hell, but nothing could be further from the truth. Rambling House was on my radar for a while--mostly because my beloved Liza raved about it. Then one Saturday night, I was out with some friends who wanted to try something new... enter Rambling House. When you walk up to the unassuming building with only a tiny chalkboard sign, it's like you're going to somebody's house instead of a bar. And that feeling of being in somebody's house completely carries through the entire experience. So without further adieu, here's what I'm absolutely loving about RH: *Um, they make their own soda! This is the real deal, y'all... rotating flavors (all delicious) that are completely natural, not too sweet, and one of the most unique things happening in Cbus. *The staff! They're so friendly and helpful. Major props to the lovely lady bartender who remembered me from one week to the next! (Yes, it was so good I went back the next week with more friends.) *The crowd... it's so Clintonville. We're talking young, old, gay, straight--and everything in between. People were wearing whatever they want too; I love a place where I don't feel out of place in my endless supply of t-shirts, jeans, and hoodies. *Live music! Both times I've been there's been fantastic live music. We're talking local bluegrass bands! *The prices can't be beat. *The drink selection... in addition to hand-crafted soda pop, they only carry Ohio liquors and beers. I am already regretting writing this review because I want my new love to stay a secret--but how douchey would that be not to share a place filled with such awesomeness. My new go-to when suggesting a place to meet up with friends. We came two weekends in a row -- both visits included some musical performances. Nothing too loud or intrusive, just gentle bluegrass and good times. I love spending evenings in spaces like this where I can have a good conversation, and there's something to do besides just consuming alcohol (here, the music!). I love the vibe in here. It's perfect for winter coziness. Kind of a rustic, communal atmosphere. Beers are tasty, high gravity, and priced lower than I would expect. House made sodas are flavorful and pack a punch! One of our visits included a Pete Seeger tribute performance. The crowd was older in this case (like 65+) and they kind of didn't seem to understand the "band in a bar" idea. They thought it was like a CONCERT, so they were annoyed with our group for talking in the back by the bar. Generally speaking, though, the crowd seems to be that perfect ageless pocket, though I'd say it tends mostly towards the 28 - 40 range. Will be back again and again! Ramblin' House feels like sitting in your living room hanging out with your good friends. But here, your living room has a stage and serves home-brewed soda pop cocktails, and your friends are some of the coolest local musicians in Columbus. Well now, aren't you cool? I can't think of anything I don't love about this place. I'll go back tonight to see if I can find anything ;) They have a solid list of draft beers for $4. No crazy 30-beer list or anything, but good, local, carefully selected brews. Then there's the cocktails. Three specialty cocktails listed on a chalkboard (maybe you can order something else, I didn't ask, because I didn't care to). The "Relentless Mule," their version of a Kentucky mule (OYO bourbon mixed with Rambling House's own Ginger Beer and a lime), "The Headless Horseman," also similar to a moscow mule, made with Watershed vodka, but they add bitters which gives it a different flavor. Really good. Then there's "The Rambler," which I wasn't big on, but my guy loved them. Made with OYO whiskey and the Rambling House cola. You'll have to try their cola to see what you think. But know this: it's not like any cola you've ever tasted, so get that outta your mind. Long tables down the middle of the room make it easy to bring a group here. One wall is lined with little tables made from pony kegs topped with small round wooden circles, and ample seating. The other wall has larger tables made from large oak barrels. They keep it super simple here, and that helps it stay a very relaxed atmosphere. Last night the Paddy Wagon was parked outside, and they were coming in to take orders, then delivering the food to tables, so no one had to wait in the cold. Tonight I hear Tatoheads will be there. Pretty sure I'll be heading back in tonight for some more live music and to hang with all the cool kids in Cbus. read more

Came here on a Sunday with a couple of friends and it was definitely a fun experience. The atmosphere was just of that where you feel at home sitting in the living room drinking a beer/pop with your amigos and listening to folks jam out on their instruments. Sunday night was jam night where local talent just plop out their instrument and they all play along with some sweet folky jams. Friday and Saturday night usually have a line up of local bands. The drinks on tap were great and they brew their own tasty sodas which are awesome. We tried the grapefruit, the cola, the sassafrass, and the ginger pop. All of them were amazing, lightly flavored and not overly sweet. They usually make mixed drinks with them but ok liquor on Sundays! Definitely worth checking out!! read more

Wow what a fun new place! I swear Columbus keeps opening the best bars/restaurants after I've moved away. The idea of a bar serving house made soda and using them in cocktails is fantastic. They also use OYO and Watershed spirits in their cocktails. I particularly loved the "Relentless Mule". Their ginger beer is nice and spicy and reminded me of the ginger ale from Northstar Cafe. They only had the ginger beer and cola on tap when I visited. I hope they mix it up each month and offer different monthly cocktails. Rambling House is my new favorite music spot! Everything there was wonderful - the sodas were very tastes & quality made. Add a little liquor & they became more tasty! The crowd was my kind of crowd - there to see the music and enjoy a quality drink. Not the get hammered on anything we can find type of crowd. This place was amazing! Friendly folks - saw an awesome country folk band. $5 cover but I don't mind that for the great atmosphere and drinks. I had a "relentless mule" which is a Moscow mule made with bourbon. However, I got it with watershed vodka because brown liquor does it to me. They serve all ohio liquors and drafts. My friend had humulus nimbus by the always awesome seventh son and big vic by elevator. My second drink was blood thirst by barleys! Will be back for sure. Bartender with the big beard and floppy hat (sorry name escapes me after a few drinks) was awesome. One suggestion: put your alcoholic menu on the website!! If it's there I didn't see it and I had to find out y'all had alcohol from yelp. :) read more

This spot is amazing! $5 cover to get in - well worth it. They have live music all the time, bluegrass. Both bands I have seen here were super talented. It's a very comfortable, fun atmosphere! The Rambling House makes their own sodas - geez! they are so good by themselves, add a little liquor and it just doesn't get any better than this. They have a legit craft brew selection too....well, I guess it does get better. l love the decor, it totally builds their bluegrass feel up - rustic, with barrells everywhere. Tatered art. This has got to be one of the most unique bars in Columbus. It's set in a house, which gives it a really cozy feel. This is a southern/bluegrass-inspired bar with great live bluegrass music every night that it's open. Please note that Sundays are dry nights so only beers and sodas are served. This type of bar is not for everyone, esp the patrons that are looking for a young/trendy vibe. I feel like it's almost too hipster for hipsters. It feels very authentic. Now for the drinks - their sodas are really good! My favorite is the ginger beer and a seasonal grapefruit soda. The relentless mule is pretty strong but good. This place is also close to one of my favorite taco trucks, exotic latino grill if I get hungry. This bar feels almost like a secret place that not many ppl know about. I hope as it gains more patrons that the vibe will remain the same. read more

This place is freaking awesome. I went here with a small group on a Friday evening and there was plenty of space. Large tables in a surprisingly spacious converted home made for a great atmosphere. It was homey and cozy despite being essentially a bar. There was a $5 cover, that I was hesitant to pay initially because I wasn't sure who the band was at all this place was somewhat lacking in reviews, but I was quickly turned about that. It was a 3 man bluegrass group playing on stage. I don't listen to bluegrass a lot, but I really, really enjoyed the band. Their music, combined with the intimate setting was perfect. The house sodas are all amazing. Just the standard cola is great even. I also tried their mojito spinoff, which was great, and their moscow mule take. The latter drink was really strong, and I'm not the hugest fan of ginger (it was my gf's drink). She really enjoyed it, so I'll take her word on their mule being great. Didn't try any of the drinks on tap...and I'm not sure I ever will...because their mixed drinks with their sodas are so damn tasty I don't know if I'll ever get anything else. I wouldn't hesitate to go here again. The only bad thing I can really think of this place is that it is kind of hard to find if you don't know what you're looking for, and that it isn't open everyday! PS: They've parted with the Helping Hands church there and their parking lot, a little west of Rambling House, is open to patrons at night. Might be a little hard to find though. read more

After hearing so many positive reviews I decided to stop in last night to check out the live bluegrass and cocktails made with their homemade sodas. To summarize the experience, it's awesome. The setup inside is cozy and quaint which makes it a perfect place to catch a show. The staff was helpful and welcoming, the band was fantastic and the prices were very reasonable. I opted for the Relentless Mule which was a refreshing combination of ginger beer, bourbon, honey and lemon and also sampled their coca and blueberry sodas. Rambling house is the guy/gal in high school that gets along with all the different cliques without posing, catering to a specific group, or sacrificing morals. Things I particularly love: 1. The $5 proceeds from the cover on the weekends go to the band. 2. Bluegrass 3. Blueberry soda and vodka 4. Ginger soda and vodka 5. Craft beer at market/below market value 6. "Let it be" mentality 7. Drunk boobs not welcome Come here for a happy buzz, lighthearted conversation, and good music. Be nice or go home. Make friends. Love thy neighbor. The owners are adorable, appreciate the business, and keep the soda flowing. Think you were skimped on alcohol? Shut up and leave. Stop causing problems. The owners are more than generous and the drinks are better than any rum and coke anywhere in the world. Parking can be difficult, and the restroom situation. I know it's a smaller bar but when it's packed full, and there's only 2 standalone restrooms, which are co-ed, it can make for a minutes wait. This place is awesome for any kind of night. The drinks are fantastic and the music is great too. Even on nights when there isn't music the vibe is good and there are some board games you can play. The drinks are good enough to stop by with nothing else going on. Anything with their ginger beer is so good. Overall definitely recommend this place. Yo! What an awesome space. Had been planning to make a visit after seeing Seth's review, and finally got around to it on Friday. This is the closest thing in town to drinking in Hobbiton or at the Prancing Pony. The ambiance is just fantastic! Old, rustic large bench style tables that promote interaction between strangers, tables sitting on oak barrels, tables made out of pony kegs, candles on all the tables. Dark, woody, and homey. The stage is no more than a half foot high and looks perfect for intimate folk, bluegrass or acoustic performances. The owners were friendly, personable, and welcoming to boot. OH YEAH, plus the prices are freakin' great. $4-5 per draft and $6 for cocktails. speaking of cocktails, I tried their take on the mule and the Headless Horseman. I thought the ginger beer in the mule was a bit understated and enjoyed the horseman a fair bit more because of the more prominent ginger in it (their mule is bourbon-based, the horseman vodka-based). Why not a five? - The selections are slim, so if you are looking for variety, this isn't the spot for you. That said, they pick and choose wisely, and I had things here that I haven't seen elsewhere in town. Selections being draft beer, mixed drinks made with their house sodas, and a few bottled options (or maybe just one). - They have not an ounce of food in the place, not even salted beer nuts or the like. - Parking leaves a lot to be desired (gotta park down at the school a few streets west). - Hours aren't exactly great, but will pick up as business does. Currently only open weekends, starting at six and closing at midnight. This week they will start opening on Thursday too. - Lastly, for a place that has live music all three nights that it is open, there are so many tables that dancing isn't really an option. Frankly, I like the tables, but I think that would be a negative for a lot of people, if the bluegrass jam at Dick's Den is any indication. Honestly, a simply fantastic new addition to the Columbus music and drinking scene, with an offbeat location that should bring some life to the intersection (Hudson and Indianola - land of quik-e marts and pizza joints). edit: Of course I'm the only jerk that didn't give five stars.
