Rancho Aloha was one of our top highlights from our trip to Hawaii! Bruce was very knowledgeable and passionate to tell us all about Kona coffee. We arrived to the top of their property, where Bruce came out to greet us - we took a walk through his farm, during which he shared with us the process and his history with coffee. Bruce Corker first dreamed of owning a coffee estate when he was in the Peace Corps in Colombia. Years later, he settled in Kona, Hawaii, and he and his family began growing and offering some of the finest organic 100% Kona coffee around. Grown at an elevation between 1000 and 3000 feet (Rancho Aloha is at 1400 feet) , Kona coffee is prized for its mellow, chocolatey flavor - for some it isn't strong enough, but when roasted properly, it is truly a marvel. 100% Kona coffee is always more expensive than Kona blends (in 2008 and the price for 1 lb of roasted Rancho Aloha coffee is $35), but for those with deep pockets and a love of great coffee, it is definitely worth the price. In 2005 Ranch Aloha won the Gevalia Kona Coffee contest, which is a great honor for Kona growers. Rancho Aloha offers both roasted beans and green beans for home roasters. I'm partial to a full city roast, which allows a more nuanced cup of coffee. The dark to medium roast tends to dull some of the more subtle flavors. Green beans tend to be much less expensive than roasted beans (about 40%) but without a roaster or a West Bend II popcorn popper, they are practically worthless, except maybe as bean bag stuffers. Rancho Aloha offers farm tours to the curious. Call ahead and they will welcome you...and who knows, maybe you'll even get to enjoy a cup of their award-winning Kona coffee. read more

I had the pleasure of going on a Rancho Aloha farm tour last fall. It was the perfect authentic Hawaii, non-touristy activity. The Corkers are hospitable, knowledgeable, and passionate about their coffee. The farm is home not only to coffee, but other fruits including avocados the size of your head, mangos, passion fruit, star fruit, and a special treat, lulo (a native south American plant that Bruce is cultivating on the island). Now, let's get to the important part: the coffee. It's fantastic. The Corkers' coffee is smooth, complex, and so low in acidity that there is no need for cream. read more

Rancho Aloha is a truly magical place. I visited (and was lucky enough to stay at) this Kona farm in December 2009. Rancho Aloha is just down the road from the center of Holualoa and provides an incredible view of the Pacific beyond the Kona region. It would be hard not to remember the experience of seeing and touching the coffee plants and land that are capable of producing such an incredibly flavorful cup of Joe. Coffee is easy to come by in our world. In between your neighborhood two green sirens are 4 independent shops that claim to pour the finest craft roast available, distributed with a side of attitude. Even the least informed coffee aficionado can recognize a need for a different approach. I can't imagine a family that loves the art of cultivating, picking and roasting coffee more than The Corkers. They are the missing component, delivering a superior cup of coffee, brewed with respect and appreciation for the trade and the environment. The Corkers approach comes from the heart, and anyone lucky enough to step foot on the fertile grounds of Rancho Aloha will leave with a better appreciation of all that goes into your morning pick me up. Any trip to The Big Island should include a trip to Rancho Aloha or to the Corker Booth at the local farmers market. Spend a day off the beach and learn more about coffee in an afternoon than you thought you would in a lifetime. This is the real deal: organic 100% Kona coffee from a beautiful parcel up in the hills that are inland from the north-south highway along with west coast of the Big Island. The beans are roasted off site at three roasting levels; you can choose the roast that corresponds to your taste. The roasted coffee is sold by the proprietors over the internet. I just had the pleasure of trying some of this when a friend brought it back from Hawaii. This isn't Starbucks... and it's to be appreciated as such. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest breeds a sort of arrogance in you, with regard to coffee. Sure Starbucks injected specialty coffee into the mainstream.... and we appreciate that. But we've moved on. We demand more from our beans... roasters... and infusion methods. Rancho Bravo is 100% pure Kona.... the real deal, my friends. This distinguishes it from impostors selling 'Kona' coffee in the super market. They typically include 15-20% Kona bean with filler. The analogy is similar to chocolate. Even a relatively young palette can distinguish a Hershey bar (5-15% cocoa) from dark, bitter sweet specialty chocolate (55-75% cocoa). If you want amazing coffee... nay, experience... then get yourself some real Kona coffee... Rancho Aloha, if you can find it. And please... don't dilute with cream and sugar. You're only cheating yourself. read more

I love coffee. Drink it every morning and try to avoid the really crappy stuff. Most of the time I purchase the best I can find on sale. But I would make an exception for this unbelievably rich and flavorful coffee any day! Besides which I have had the pleasure of visiting the Corker's farm in the past and found them to be lovely hosts. Rancho Aloha coffee is definitely worth tasting, especially if you want to experience authentic Kona coffee. read more

We called Rancho Aloha to say we were coming to Kona. Bruce emailed us directions which were very easy to follow. He asked us to phone when we arrived to set up a time. We did and it was for the next day. It took us about 30 minutes from downtown Kailua Kona to get there. Bruce gave us a very complete and through tour. We were even able to roast our own 100% Kona to take with us. We met his lovely wife Lisa and exchanged a few stories about our Peace Corps days. Bruce is very passionate about what he does and enjoys sharing with his guests. This was the highlight of my trip to Hawaii. read more

Going to a famous coffee region, we thought it would be great to get a tour of a coffee farm, sort of like a reconnaissance mission for our daily morning beverage. Lucky for us, we had a friend of a friend who's parents own a coffee farm, Rancho Aloha. We met Bruce Corker, who told us about his life long dream to grow coffee, showed us around his farm, and taught us the basics and economics of growing coffee. No tour would be complete without sampling the goods, and this coffee was so delicious that I didn't even need milk. The highlight of the tour was when Bruce instructed Gramercy Guy on the hows of roasting your own coffee, who knew all you need is a good skillet and a spoon. We took home the fruits of his labor and have enjoyed a few cups. If I close my eyes, I can imagine the warm breeze and the sun on my skin. I am worried that the coffee we ordered won't come before we finish our stash of beans. read more
