We have been here before, back when it was Wildwood and finally got around to coming back yesterday (Saturday night) for dinner and live music. The vibe is pretty similar to what it was before, the layout hasn't changed much and the live music area is in the same place. The music was a lot of fun, Raynaldo was playing and he does a great job with the music and he also interacts with the audience in a fun way. The food was quite good, we started with some guacamole and then baja fish tacos and enchiladas suiza. All very good, no "wow" moments. The house margaritas were underwhelming. I couldn't really detect any tequila flavor in the drink. That could be because I'm used to making margaritas at home where they are half tequila... There's plenty of free parking and the restaurant interior reminds me of some type of tex mex restaurant that's slightly dated. I've been here a few times and it's pretty solid. We always get the fried pickle chips. The chipotle aioli dip what elevates this appetizer. I was hesitant about getting the mole because I've been spoiled when I went to Oaxaca. Since then, I've had a tough time finding a restaurant that had great mole. I asked the server if I could have a sample of their mole and they were super kind to oblige. It wasn't at the Oaxaca level but it was one of the better mole I've had (I've had quite a few and some were so bad I couldn't even finish it). The chicken mole enchiladas were great and it came with a side of beans and rice, which made the meal feel complete. It was very filling and I took half of it home to go. I'm not going to lie but the leftovers after they were reheated tasted even better. I don't know if it's because the food had time to marinate in the flavors but I was so happy. While the sides were decent, the prime rib itself tasted more like ham, and didn't have a beefy flavor. While it was medium rare like I asked, it still seemed a little on the dry side. We were sad to see wildwood go, but today we checked out their replacement Rancho El Agave. The space is getting a little more decorative. Service was very friendly. I ordered carnitas and a side of avocado slices - carnitas was really juicy and flavorful. I really enjoyed it. The avocado was nice too. My husband ordered the carne asada burrito. They did actually bring him a carnitas burrito but he didn't say anything because he loved it anyway. He got it 'wet' with half green sauce and half red and said he'd do that again next time too. Chips and salsa were great too. Overall a great experience especially considering the just barely opened so still getting things going. We will be back again for sure. read more

This place changed ownership and now the name is Rancho de Agave We went Thursday night. Food was delicious and the endless chips warm and fresh were wonderful. I had the house red and hubs had the peanut butter stout. Hubs had the steak tacos and I had the chicken enchiladas We both were able to have a wonderful salad instead of refried beans. Okay, really bummed. LOVED the carne asada the last time, but this visit it was WAY overdone . If I wasn't under a time constraint, I would have sent it back. We had a group of seven adults, two infants and one toddler. The service was fantastic, but when paying $300 for this group, I expected the experience to be top notch and it wasn't. I was hoping this would be my "go to" restaurant for Mexican food. My wife loved the beet salad on our last visit, but it has been removed from the menu. What a great place! Food is excellent!! They have a very large menu and a huge variety. Anything from bbq to burgers, steak and Mexican food. So anyone can find something they want. They have brunch on Saturday and Sunday with bottomless mimosas. The breakfast menu is also really great, great Mexican options. Food has been delicious, everything I've gotten I have loved and raved about after. The steak and lobster also were cooked perfectly! Everything tastes very fresh and home made. About the same as it was when it was Mexican (regional) cuisine from its prior purveyors. Not too sure of the menu as it is as diverse and interruptingly confusing as any AmMex menu I have seen. A little of this, and a little of that; but most of what we had, should not be on anyone's menu. It wasn't anything to order again. Positives, they do have a bar and music. Service on this Tuesday lunch seemed to be one guy in front of the house, and probably one guy in the back. Not real fast and not real efficient. Food came out somewhat timely, but was not accompanied by any ounce of service touchpoints. We do want to try their Sunday breakfast and Prime Rib dinner. We feel there should be something (food wise) they serve that draws the better reviews. Otherwise this is, as it always has been, a locals' bar/happy hour hangout. Unfortunately we must of caught them on a bad day. We arrived for mother Day brunch. Quite literally the only thing our server had to do was bring our drinks. That proved to be far too much for them. The "manager" looked like a deer in headlights the entire time of our visit. Asked if we wanted refills on water, never came back. Was going to fix drink orders never helped. Was going to get us hot sauce, you guessed it she did not. Ordered an espresso martini and received a White Russian. When we went to the bar to ask the bartender they said we do not have espresso. OOOOkay! So pull it off the menu and let your servers know. There was no leadership and it was complete chaos We had a few bottomless mimosa orders, took 35 minutes to get a bottle to the table. They had the same guy making pancakes and cutting prime rib for the Buffett? What? The buffet was picked through and not being replenished in a timely matter. Brunch started at 11 our reservation was for 12 how was the nothing left at 12? Eventually the buffet was replenished but it took a long time. This location, possibly the best one in Vista with its outdoor terrace overlooking a tiny park, has failed to live to expectations for years. Indeed, several restaurant have closed their doors.. The former Wildwood Restaurant which opened to much fanfare lasted merely a handful of years. And now, the same family as the original owners of the legendary LA PALOMA Mexican restaurant have returned after buying back their former location and renamed Rancho El Agave. Sorry to say, Rancho el Agave is nowhere near as good as its Mexican predecessor, albeit owned by the same family. I remember La Paloma as "the" place to dine in Vista.. granted there were not too many in the late 1970s but I was most impressed that La Paloma had been reviewed in Gourmet magazine, the foremost food mag in the US at the time. Several specialties I can't recall were most unusual for the time and place. The question remains why the descendants of the original owners(??) chose to open a so-so Mexican place when there are dozens and dozens of holes in the wall in Vista serving authentic Mexican specialties. I can think of half a dozen on my end of S. Santa Fe. Bakeries galore, Northgate market and its excellent tamales, Primo with its lip-smacking street tacos, Eriberto's fresh and huge fish tacos, and I could go on. El Agave has a music room which hosts a band every Friday, and that was filled with customers. In all, I will not return to El Agave, though the service was pleasant if a bit scattered (they confused an order and they compensated with a free dessert.) The albondigas tasted as though it came from a can, or was prepared elsewhere, and was not warm enough. Hire a new chef! Rework your menu and recipes...you have plenty of Mexican cooking pros in Vista..Go to El Agave for the music and forget the food. read more

I've been coming here longer than this place has been around. It's really a prime location on a central corner in Vista. Based on the decor and the menu they can't decide whether they are a Mexican restaurant or a bar and grill steakhouse. The two sides of the menu read like there's two different kitchens - antojitos on one side, appetizers on the other. Not a large variety on either side. Everything we had was good, prepared quickly, and the staff were friendly and responsive. Margaritas were really salty, though we asked for no salt. My French dip was very good. Son's chicken strips were over cooked. Wife liked her dish, took some home. They do have live music on weekends, and a bar and patio. We'll probably be back. read more

I almost hesitate to leave this review only to keep this gem of a place to ourselves. We sit in the bar and would be hurt if there wasn't room for us anymore. The foremost reason to occupy this establishment is the MARGARITA. Not just any, mind you. One made by Odyssey. Best in all of San Diego county, and we know, we've been all over looking for brilliance and Odyssey's is the best. There are two blondes that also work in the bar, one's margie is just OK, the other's is just GD awful. Ask for Odyssey or just get a beer. Food. 3 out of 4 times it's incredible.
