Any complaints on appearance is null and void as it's expected with a theater that's been around since 1928 so if you can't appreciate dated then save yourself the trip to enjoy old time's. With that said, it's nice knowing people have the option to buy tickets online beforehand albeit @ $14 or in-person cash only @ $12; I opted to the buy beforehand. I also understand why it's a cash only establishment seeing the owner would have to pay card fees if he started accepting cards at the box office or even when buying snacks which turn would up the prices for us who visit also. All in all my, girlfriends and I had a great night watching Stand by me.

La Paloma is a must see unique movie experience in San Diego! It will not be your classic luxury movie experience in any way. The whole place is quite run down, but that adds to the charm of it all. My family and I came on the Italian Movie Night which happens once a month and we had such a great time. We came with other friends who had been before, and brought seat covers which was a great tip for the future. They do have candy, snacks, popcorn and all the usual movie treats.

What a night!!! What a performance! We had the most amazing time at La Paloma. From the super welcoming cast out front, to the extravagant, artistic performances during the show of RHPS - I can gladly say my RHPS V card was WELL-stolen and WITH CONSENT! The actors and actresses were brilliant. Standing ovation! Whoever shouted "SUSAN SARANDONWRAP" during the show is my new hero, btw. The Theater is easy to access & parking was a breeze right in front. If you're a first-timer -- don't worry! You're in good hands (and spanks ;)!!!!!!) 18+ for RHPS recommended. This is WORTH THE $! Have yourself one heckuva evening! I couldn't believe it wasn't $50/ticket! I think we paid less than $15/pp and had a movie ANDDDD a show! Would suggest 15/10!

This place is falling apart, but that's why it's got its charm and character. Old movie theater built decades and decades ago, it's somewhat fell into a state of despair. Came here for a documentary movie on ice climbing and that was great. They definitely show a lot of Indy films related to outdoor sports not otherwise in big box theaters. They do sell popcorn and some drinks. Just very old school, nothing fancy. The chairs are not particularly comfortable so we only come here to see movies that are less than an hour long. Super cool place.

I haven't been to a local theater in San Diego before and I don't know why! I attended the Solento Surf Festival held here and had the best time. It's a very cute and quaint theater with a beautifully aged interior, complete with high ceilings and the all but recognizable dingy carpeting and theater seats (in the best way possible of course). But let me tell you, their popcorn oh my god was so GOOD! I don't know what they put in that stuff but it was magical and my friend and I ate the whole bag. I'll be on the lookout now for more events and showings at the theater because I'd love to come back.

This place is the perfect date night spot. The interior is beautiful and vintage and it takes you back to a diff time. The popcorn is delicious and the guy who made it did an excellent job on the butter:popcorn ratio . Also tons of restaurants nearby so you can do dinner first and just walk over.

The La Paloma is of a dying breed. It's been around for 96 years, and is one of the very last single screen theaters still in existence. You can feel its presence and soul when inside. I came to an 8pm showing of "Waterman," the Duke Kahanamoku documentary, and was the sole patron. There wasn't a single other person in the theater. This theater, that has hosted nearly a century of audiences, had nobody. Thank you to the La Paloma and the gentleman who showed the film even though it was only me. Please support this historic and incredible space. Places like this are sacred!

Ask the Community - La Paloma Theatre

Does the theater have its own parking lot?

They do not but there is free parking right behind the theater that's part of the transit center. There is always free street parking around the area.

    Where can one park?

There is street parking in the front or a free parking lot "around back." I know a lot of people worry about parking in SD, but honestly, there's ALWAYS a spot. One will open up!

The location is great, with a large parking lot that's easy to get in and out of. I still love the lobby and overall atmosphere. It feels a lot more upscale than your average movie theater, and everything seemed clean and well maintained. The biggest disappointment was the service. We ordered a popcorn refill and additional drinks during the movie and ended up waiting about 30 to 40 minutes for them to arrive. I also never received a receipt at the end and had to stop by customer service afterward. I also have to mention how much I miss the Greek bowl they used to serve. It had gyro meat and was hands down my favorite thing on the menu. I would love to see it make a comeback. I'll definitely be back because I still enjoy the theater overall, but I do feel like the experience isn't quite as good as it used to be.

Unfortunately, the theater itself felt pretty dated. Paint peeling, stains, general signs of wear. The food was fine, but nothing that really stood out. If you frequent places like The Lot (especially the one in La Jolla), you know what a luxury cinema experience can be. This one unfortunately didn't meet that bar for me. The ticket price is ridiculous for essentially a one hour light show. The staff is friendly and provide instructions upon arrival. We arrived early and used the time to visit the gift shop. There were some good items, but they were mostly focused on Van Gogh. I was disappointed there was not more Monet merchandise. There is an "education area" before you go into the experience. Aside from reading the walls, there isn't much in the way of education. I thought the display was creative with the use of color and light and large sheer banners hanging from the ceiling. A few minutes before the show starts, you line up with a lot of other people. They tell you to walk around for the best experience. Unfortunately, the space is too small with people packed in so there is no way to walk around. Basically you are stuck in one place the entire time unless you want to push your way to a different spot. Floors are concrete, so standing for a while is uncomfortable. There were no seats other than a few benches scattered around. They should have been reserved as handicap. The Van Gogh experience is first and very slow to get started. There is no narration. Occasionally quotes appear in both French and English. Depending on the way you are facing, you may not see one or the other. There were some parts I really enjoyed, the flowers and starry night parts in particular. The Van Gogh part is about 30 minutes. We bought the combined tickets so we thought the Monet part would start immediately after. We were wrong! They replay the Van Gogh part and start Monet about 15 minutes in. I was extremely disappointed in the Monet experience and could have been so much better. We actually left after 10 minutes. There are so many missed opportunities for this experience. My recommendation would be to increase the size significantly so that people can walk as the show progresses. Being confined to a small space with a bunch of strangers is not fun. I think this experience would be okay for younger people or others who are not art enthusiasts. If you are really curious, go see the Van Gogh part. That's more than enough.
