Our experience with RanchView has been amazing. The staff is incredibly caring and dedicated. All the activities provided from the vast number of outdoor concerts in the patio and piano concerts in the recreation room to water coloring and flower arranging under the lanai, the RanchView staff is engaging and attentive. As my mom has transitioned to hospice care the staff has been amazingly, dedicated and observant of her needs. Throughout our lifetime, our family has owned five senior citizen, retirement centers, and I know how much it takes to run a center such as RanchView. I highly recommend RanchView and all the staff to anyone considering placement for their parent. My decision to move to RanchView was slow and deliberate. My mom had been in home support care living at home for 10 years. I only chose RanchView after a long and dedicated search. My decision was wonderful and I can't recommend RanchView enough. RanchView staff is like family and the facility is our home. When I bring family members with me to visit mom, staff remembers them and also offers to help them to make their visit with mom more comfortable, such as sharing snacks or meals, or providing any type of comfort or conversation that makes their visit to my mom more enjoyable. Kathleen my wife of 58 years has been a resident at Ranch View for the last 2 years. I visit her 6 days per week so I am familiar with meals, staff, cleanliness and overall vibes. When a loved one is in a home, holidays in general are difficult, Thanksgiving in particular, may be the most difficult for our family. Kathleen established terrific traditions, hosting 10-20 friends or family and baking 8-10 pies making our 6 grandchildren feel special. This year Ranch View celebrated Thanksgiving one week early and we invited our best friends who attended and made the day even more special. For the second year in a row our family wanted to bring Thanksgiving to Kathleen at Ranch View on Thanksgiving day. Maria and staff set up a table and 10 chairs in a private room for our family Thanksgiving and it was a huge success. I will be forever grateful to the wonderful staff at RanchView for how they cared for my mother, and for their strong partnership with me during her time there. What impressed me the most was how they met my Mom exactly where she was at each phase of her journey. They figured out how best to support her, ease her fears, make her feel safe and loved, bring her joy, and keep her engaged. They were so kind to her, and so patient; willing to try whatever would work best. They treated her with respect and dignity. And joked around with her a lot -- she loved that. RanchView is back in a beautiful, quiet area. The patio is a stunner and brought my mom (and us) a lot of peace. Our family felt right at home during visits, and we loved sitting on the patio with her, singing along to the live music, enjoying a chair Zumba class with her (!), joining a group activity or celebration, or just watching the birds and talking. The place is always clean and bright, with fresh flowers in the rooms. Mom loved having her hair and nails done by the caregivers every week. The kitchen staff uses fresh, healthy ingredients for meals and snacks (and it's GOOD! I can vouch). A lot of effort goes into making RanchView feel like home and not a "facility". With two parents suffering from dementia, I have toured (and moved my parents from) quite a few memory communities in Southern California. RanchView is a rare gem. It's difficult to find a place that offers their level of care (even though it shouldn't be). RanchView is by far the exception, not the rule. RanchView & the staff there have been an answer to prayer. It was very difficult to find a place for my dad. But Maria worked with us and made this difficult transition a smooth one. The staff there are so kind & patient with my dad, and with all of the residents that I can see. They do not run this facility like a business, it's more like a home environment. I find peace in knowing that my dad is well cared for, safe, and truly cared about.. Maria is so attentive and responds quickly when I have questions.. My mom has lived in RanchView since March 2020. She moved in just as the pandemic set in. Since then, ownership has changed, but quality has not. I can't imagine a more loving, kind place for my mom to be. Recently, she was very sick and went to the ER. The hospital was great, but once her illness was resolved, she lost interest in eating. We returned her back home to RanchView, and the staff doted on her, encouraging her to eat, and buying special treats they knew she enjoyed. They even asked for our homemade soup recipe and had it ready for her when she returned. RanchView is truly a special place. My Mom has been a resident at Ranch View for over a year. During this time, she has come to be very content and comfortable with her life there. It was initially not so easy to get her to transition to a senior assisted living home, but within a short time period, she had clearly adapted to her new home. Credit for this goes to the staff at Ranch View: They are friendly, caring, patient, flexible, and create a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere that compliments the peaceful and well cared for property. I love visiting this facility. The residents are the focus within the walls of this homey environment. The facility is clean. The staff are friendly. They work hard. They're smiling. They bring the residents outside on the patio frequently. The sun shines a lot here in San Diego county. Location is Encinitas/Olivenhain area. Lovely, safe almost rural feel. (This is coming from an Iowa native) There is a pride in the work and love they provide here. In our family, the most used comment about Olivenhain Guest House is how thankful we are to have found them. OGH provides all you would want for your loved one in the way of safety, activities, and general care, but for us, above all, we have experienced the most caring and compassionate staff starting with the administrator, Karen. Despite the fact that the pandemic has prohibited our ability to see our family member, Karen and the staff have gone above and beyond to help us to feel close despite the physical distance that separates us. They send videos and photographs, stories, and updates. This gives us such peace of mind during a difficult time. Further, we have felt 100% confident in their handling of the COVID-19 crisis - they have communicated extensively and been largely successful at keeping residents healthy. Even when a small outbreak occurred, they immediately contained it, and the residents affected thankfully, made a full recovery. We know OGH cannot be responsible for the outcome of every illness, but the staff is responsible for protocols, standards-of-care, and two-way communication at all times, and it is in those that we have the utmost confidence. I would never place another person in my family in this facility. $8,000 a month and they have a squeaker toy to call staff. My family member paid more for a private room here. All other facilities were full. He was bed ridden but totally coherent. I came one day and the floor was covered with urine as no one had change his urine bag. I walked through the facility and everyone was at a birthday party in the main room. I told the aide his room is flooded with urine. They rushed in and had to strip the entire bed, move him out ..so they could mop the floors. Also, at night he was disturbed by a dementia patient wandering into his room and screaming out. I could continue to site more issue, but won't. Do not leave your family member at this facility. read more

My mother really found a home for herself here for almost seven years. When I visited, from quite a distance, she (a past president of the American Dietetic Assn.) made a point of telling me about the good, healthy, meals and I enjoyed them, as well. She always seemed relaxed, happy, peaceful and appreciative of the staff, whom she grew to know very well. The staff seemed truly welcoming to family members. Also! The music is not just an add-on here, but a wonderful piece of near-everyday life, which meant so much to her and to the nearby family, too. In the end, the hospice care was excellent, too! On April 14th I visited Olivenhain's community and enjoyed a tour from the owners Hank and Suzanne. I was impressed with the beautiful outdoor courtyard and noting it being enjoyed by their residents and family members. Upon touring inside the community I was pleasantly surprised that the air was fresh and clean smelling and there was no odor that other communities sometimes have. The activity calendar was filled with appropriate activities for a memory care unit and residents were up and about enjoying them. The rooms were neat and very clean and staff on the floor greeted me as I walked past them with friendliness. The community seemed warm and friendly. In visiting with Hank and Suzanne I felt they genuinely cared for each and every resident and held themselves to a very high standard of care for them. I would not hesitate recommending Olivenhain Guest-home to friends and others. read more

Both of my parents have been at OGH for 6 months now, and I could not recommend this sweet place more! I spend a lot of time there, and continue to grow in my appreciation for the staff. The caregivers are as caring as they come...they all know my parents well and are excellent at anticipating and meeting their needs. This has become home to us all in many ways, and the staff feels like a big family. Did I mention they genuinely CARE??? That's the greatest asset OGH has. That is the highest priority to me for my parents, and I'm so thankful to have found such a caring environment. If you'd like examples, keep reading... 1. When Dad was losing his appetite recently, the chef changed the menu to serve BBQ ribs because she knew my dad loves them. All of the food is delicious and has great seasoning, but the personal connection between the kitchen and my parents means even more! 2. Everyone chips in for what's needed. The facility manager not only keeps the patio beautiful with the fruit trees and great swings, but he shaves and cuts my dad's hair because Dad loves him to. 3. The activities directors & musicians keep all the residents laughing and smiling often. My 11 year old daughter likes to schedule her visits around bingo with her favorite activity coordinator (he's also a retired scientist so brings great lessons). 4. The medical staff goes above and beyond to communicate with me on any changes or needs they see with my folks. 5. The housekeeping staff does a very thorough job cleaning well and often, and always converses with residents and offers some love and encouragement. I cannot say enough about how wonderful this place is. Everyone from the owners to the entire staff are nothing short of Angels. My Dad recently passed away, and with tears still in my eyes, my only regret was not learning about this place sooner. The staff is very caring to not only the residents but to the family visiting their loved ones. My mother was a resident here until she passed and I was so impressed with the level and quality of care she received. Every time we saw her she was engaged and active and so many people on the staff treated her like they were close friends. They have many activities which engage the residents and everyone who works there is sincerely looking out for the guests. My Mother lived at Olivenhain Guest Home for the last four years and recently passed away amidst tears and love from their staff. I highly recommend the Olivenhain Guest Home. I have previously written about their excellent care and low ratio of caretakers to residents. All care is provided under one monthly fee--there are no hidden costs. Olivenhain is privately owned, which allows more fexibility for planning than one has at corporate facilities. The owners are very involved and hands-on in the day to day operations. They are always accessable for questions and return phone calls immediately. In the beginning, when she could walk around on her own, my Mother never felt "locked in", even though Olivenhain is a locked facility. My Mom could open the front door and walk right out into the lovely, large patio area. She participated in the activities which were designed to help her brain and body stay active. Plus there was always some type of musical event. As her Alzheimer's progressed and she became wheelchair bound, the staff would take her outside to enjoy the garden. Eventually, the staff had to feed, bathe, and dress her. They cut Mom's hair when needed and gave weekly manicures. She was treated with dignity and so much love. Many of the staff slipped into her room to say goodbye as Mom made her trip to the next world. There are no chandeliers and Olivenhain is not designer furnished. It looks more like Grandma's. It is always clean and filled with flowers that the more able residents arrange as one of their weekly acitivities. Olivenhain puts their money into training and providing extra staff, rather than decor. There is a visiting doctor who comes to the facility and checks residents who do not have their own physician. This saves many a trip to the Doctor's office or emergency room. We appreciated that our concerns were always taken seriously. In particular, communication improved between us and the nurse and the med tech staff. More accountability was incorporated for care takers' logs. Signs and electronic warning buzzers were put in place to indicate residents with fall risks or critical medical needs. We felt that our Mom was truy in a safe and caring place. read more

My 90 year old parents lived at Olivenhain Guest Home for a year and a half. Both had advanced dementia. My mother was frail and weak and was eventually put on hospice care. During that six month period the OGH caregivers were attentive and compassionate, although she fell 6 times during this period. One of the falls resulted in multiple bruises, a broken nose and pelvis. At which point hospice began to suspect neglect. My mom passed away, mercifully, in June of 2017. My father required less hands-on care. He did get a rash in early July 2016, and co-owner Hank took him to the dermatologist. In subsequent weeks the rash got worse but I was not kept up to date on how MUCH worse it got. He was bathed at least every other day, so the caregivers would have noticed. On September 23, 3 months after the rash appeared, the dermatologist, on examination, discovered the rash had spread over his entire body, later to be diagnosed as scabies. Scabies is highly contagious, very difficult to cure, and is extremely uncomfortable. It is unfathomable to me why OGH did not bring this to my attention. During 2016 there were several different people in the RN position. I found communication with the RNs, the med techs and myself to be inconsistent. I felt the need to be proactive in making sure doctors orders were followed. Compression stockings were prescribed to help the swelling in my dad's legs, but were never applied. I would ask about this and not receive answers. In regards to the administrators in this facility, I found Kelly to be honest and capable. Trudy seems to really care about the residents. As for the co-owners Hank and ex-wife Suzanne, you'll have to form your own opinions. read more

My mother in law recently passed away after living here for almost 7 years. When my wife and I brought her here, we were immediately impressed by the love and caring approach by the staff. The large outdoor patio and live music almost every day were also big draws. My mother in law loved the outdoors so much she spent almost all of her time outdoors in the courtyard for the first few years there. Having the large patio in front of the building enabled her to experience being outdoors without feeling locked in and made visiting her more pleasant. She was also involved in the many activities there. The live music was especially supportive as she would sing along and tap her foot even after she had lost most her speech ability in the later years of the disease. During the 7 years there she received excellent personal care and everyone treated her like a family member would. The fact that she was there almost 7 years and enjoyed her time there speaks volumes about a place when someone is there that long and there was never a question that she was in the right place. read more

I take my Certified Therapy Newfoundland dog to visit the residents of this wonderful Guest Home. When I come to visit I often have to wait as the residents are busy with hands on art lessons and projects, their music or some other activity. I have seen, on many occasions, how this wonderful home is run, and have come to respect and enjoy Susanne and Hank Kurtz, who I have found to be conscientious, professional and above all warm and caring. I have done Therapy Dog visits in other guest homes and they cannot compare to the warmth and level of genuine concern and compassion Suzanne and Hank and the staff show to their residents. In addition, the home has just been remodeled and expanded and is bring and cheerful. This home is an asset to the community and I would recommend the Olivenhain Guest Home to anyone looking for a placement for a loved one because of my first hand knowledge and on the advice of friends in the neighborhood who have had their parents in this home. The post previous to mine is shocking and untrue. The person that posted this knows it. Lunch on the patio, is especially wonderful (if weather permits). Entertainment and activities are there and your loved ones and they are delighted with the warm and welcoming variety of performers. All holidays are celebrated for all of the family with a warm welcome. The staff and caregivers are there to support and care for you, as well as. your loved one. We love Olivenhain completely! When my mother first needed to be in a care home, we thought a small "6-pack" might work best for her. But instead we realized that my mother would thrive and be allowed to be most herself in a place where she could have more freedom and more staff to provide attentive care. We found Olivenhain to be the perfect place for my mother and our family. Suzanne and Hank both had parents with dementia and they created this home just as we would want for a parent. Even though I had to be away from California eventually, Trudy and Suzanne and the staff kept me constantly updated and on our visits my brothers and I could feel the authentic caring and affection for our mother. We could not imagine a more wonderful place for our mother. At home she had lacked social and intellectual stimulation as we focused on her care, and at Olivenhain there were daily music programs for my musician mother, art projects, group activities like trivia games or bingo designed to keep minds alert and exercised, gardening projects, times to sit quietly and people watch or times to celebrate holidays or birthdays and be part of a group. We feel as if the staff at Olivenhain cared for our mother better than we ever could have in her final two years. When she needed to transition to hospice, she could stay in Olivenhain, a familiar place, with people she knew, people who knew her, receiving not just safe and sound care but loving, affectionate care. My mother has just passed on Cinco de Mayo, and while grieving her loss, we celebrate the beautiful home, courtyard patio, skilled and loving staff that could be her own home. We recommend Olivenhain Guesthome without reservation and feel deep gratitude a friend referred us there after we also had researched many many options.
