During these long months, when visitors are few, her kindness, compassion, and cheerful spirit have meant more to us than words can express. Everyone at Hospice of the North Coast has been wonderful, and I truly appreciate the entire team. But I especially wanted to give a heartfelt shout-out to Ann for the joy and comfort she brings to both of us. She is a remarkable caregiver, and we are so grateful to have her in our lives.

My despondency lies in my understanding and my emotive affect I surely conveyed in light of the inevitable permanent wound that now defines us. By contrast her son understandably retreated to a human casual matter of fact cope mechanism. In particular one staff member seem to play off of that, and after the fact appeared to have realized by my unspoken facial response, felt compelled to approach me privately to apologize for what remained unspoken, but was clearly evident. However, my main distress lies in this, initially when her demise was upon us, we were assured we would have sufficient time with her as much time as we deemed appropriate to come to some kind of superficial peace with the reality and were told that she would be cleaned for she was soiled as it were before being transported. This is not what happened. We did attempt to take the time we needed it, but apparently calls were made, and as we were still struggling to make our way to that sense of peace the service arrived to retrieve her. I remember my impending sense of discussed at the thought of her not being taken care of in that delicate way prior to her being dispatched from the facility. As he lay with her so that point where they bagged her, she would still twitch and despite what common science or the medical bureaucracy would state to us in the moment that speaks to signs of some limited suppressed sustained life. One can imagine the feelings that would stir in one who bears witness to a loved one still neurologically active to any degree, soiled, and being zipped up. This is my take and subsequently my review.

My mother lives in an assisted living home, and there was some confusion over the paperwork for her brand-new wheelchair. I had spent quite a while on the phone with the head nurse, who assured me they had no paperwork and no proof that the new wheelchair we had purchased for my mother was even on the premises. Instead, I was told they believed she was using an older wheelchair that had been provided by hospice and that it had to be returned to hospice immediately. My heart just sank. I felt frustrated because I honestly felt like what I was saying wasn't being heard. I was being told they had paperwork that showed something completely different, and I started to feel defeated. Not only was I being told I might have to pay for the six months they believed my mother had been using the hospice wheelchair, but I was also being told I would need to purchase a new wheelchair for her. That was a huge financial double whammy, and I was honestly beside myself. When Kayla heard how upset I was, she didn't hesitate. She immediately jumped into action. She was calm, reassuring, and never made me feel like I was on my own. One phone call later, and in less than 20 minutes, the entire situation was resolved. The biggest thing I walked away with wasn't just that the problem got fixed. It was how Kayla made me feel. She made me feel taken care of. She made me feel protected. When you're trying to take care of an elderly parent, that kind of compassion means everything. Thank you, Kayla, for turning one of the most stressful days I've had in a long time into one with a happy ending. Comfort and Thrive is very fortunate to have you. And one last thing...please give this lady a raise. She absolutely deserves it.

Since my dad has dementia, we asked for a caretaker that is experienced in dementia-specific care. During the intake, I told the team that experience should be the top priority over anything. Instead, we had a "kind-of" experienced person come to train somebody who literally had their first day in the industry in our home. This guy didn't even know how to help my dad change his pull-ups when he was still mobile. Very simple stuff that frankly I've never been trained on myself, and have no business training him on. This theme continued throughout the time we were with them, and it ultimately became more work to have their caretakers in the home. We also paid a premium for dementia-care, but obviously the person who is brand new is not providing that value. We stayed with them until my dad was hospitalized. We need 30+ hours per week of care since then, and we actively avoided bringing them back because they were no help. They are also extremely disorganized as an organization. The care is the main reason we stopped working with them, and the admin & accounting teams have made sure we don't even explore other caretakers with them. Working with this company has been a headache, and I would suggest looking at other agencies for a significantly better experience.

She runs a very tight ship but does so with grace and poise and it's apparent she cares for all of her residents, families, and staff. Karen is always available and responsive when needed. My mother thinks the world of her and for good reason. The nursing management and staff are kind and competent and always ready to help. These professionals have saved my mother's life on several occasions and I am humbled by how hard they work to keep their elderly residents feeling safe and cared for. The great part about this place is that they also offer a great Memory Care Program. If my mother ever needs that specific service, I am confident that she will be well taken care of. The community is always clean and fresh when I visit my mother and we just enjoy those fresh cookies the receptionist bakes daily. I shopped around and Emeritus at Oceanside offers the best bang for our buck. You can find slightly less expensive places but they are not up to standard in my opinion. You can pay much more and not do any better. I thank God for guiding me to this place, I can now sleep better knowing that my mother is in good hands. I give this place all the stars in the sky. I really didn't want to write this review, but I don't want others to experience what we did…read more Shores was recommended by the facility where my parents live, and when my dad was ready to begin hospice Shores responded quickly and kindly. One of the most appealing reasons we went with Shores is that they offer 7-day a week caregiver visits. We agreed to start at 5 days a week, and I was told I could always move to 7 days when ready. They assigned a fabulous caregiver who came Monday thru Friday. She communicated well, sent photos of my father and explained what she did on the visit (showers, bed changes, nail care, room organizing, etc). On many occasions I walked in to find her simply sitting with dad, holding his hand and talking to him. She dealt with his dementia and lack of energy with kindness and dignity. However, when she had to take a day off there was no one to fill in for her. The nurse was communicative and explained medication changes, Dad's condition changes, etc. This was the hospice we dreamed of and I felt so supported. So much so that I recommended them to a friend who used them as well. Unfortunately that caregiver left the company, our nurse was assigned to another area, and the service went down hill from there. As dad declined we requested the offered 7 days per week of caregiving. After 6 weeks and several requests we were still at a scheduled 5 days per week, but ended up with weeks where visits were as little as 2 times a week. I went out of town for three weeks only to return to find dad had not had a shower in 9 days. Communication with his facility was low, and communication with me was even less. We had caregivers who told me they rushed dad when changing him by telling him (lying) that I was coming for a doctor's appointment and he needed to go quick quick! I had a caregiver call and tell me that my dad had thrown her phone as she was "showering him" and that the facility staff had told her to charge me for it - her story changed a few times in the ensuing days. I had caregivers tell me they couldn't work with dad because he refused to shower or change his clothes. While I'm guessing dad did refuse, I would hope that a hospice who agrees to work with dying dementia patients would have caregivers who were indeed experienced with dementia (the staff at his facility did not had trouble showering him or changing him). On one of the last visits I witnessed a caregiver arrive and leave within 6 minutes - I changed the bed. I had a nurse make medication changes, that I agreed to, but didn't fully understand. That's on me for not asking enough questions. However, I would have hoped that an experienced hospice nurse would have understood I did not actually understand the ramifications, and would have made certain the family fully understood the changes before making them. We had mistakes in medication orders to the facility that weren't discovered until my dad suffered the symptoms of the medication error. That said, as dad's days neared the end, we got the original nurse back and she made frequent visits to see dad. She helped me even on her days off, and she called after each visit. She made an extra effort to ease dad's discomfort, and I'm certain his last two weeks were made easier because of her. She is indeed a hospice angel. Dad died last Tuesday, today is Sunday and the medical equipment is still sitting in his room - even after multiple request to pick it up. While we did have some good experiences and met some very lovely people through the care of my dad with Shores, my overall experience leaves me wondering if I could have made my dad's last six months easier and more comfortable if I had gone with another company. I many times found myself apologizing for bothering them when we had requests for communication. Shores seems to be under staffed and staffed with some personnel who don't seem to have the patience to deal with dementia patients.
