The only reasons I did not give this place a 1 star are its many warm caregivers and its extensive garden. The management has been atrocious throughout the 3.5 years my mom spent there. During this time, there were two executive directors who came and went. The more recent one lasted over 2.5 years. She was a pathological liar who stopped showing up to work on a regular basis about half way into her tenure. Everybody she hired was either related to her or a friend of hers, so there was no accountability. Residents were regularly neglected, physically as well as emotionally. I informed her boss about it in January '24, and her boss' boss (!) in October '24, but she lasted all the way through December '24. In between January '24 and October '24, when my mom left, there were numerous phone calls, Zoom meetings, and in person meetings with the Executive director's boss and other concerned family members. We were always promised that things will improve, but they never did. It's worth noting that the place is particularly awful for wheelchair bound residents, as I found out during my mom's last 5 weeks there. Nobody ever wheels them around the beautiful garden, as grossly misrepresented in the video on the main page of the Summerfield website. If they're lucky, they will be taken to the activity room, but often they are just left behind. Many families hire a private caregiver for their loved ones in Summerfield, but even those have all left in disgust. As the saying goes, "a fish rots from the head down". ALSO, VERY IMPORTANT IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING PLACING YOUR LOVED ONE IN SUMMERFIELD: Be aware that many of the reviews are written by Summerfield Employees and folks who just came in for a visit. read more

I looked at several places in San Diego area before choosing Summerfield as a new home for my mom, who has both Alzheimer's and cancer. She has been here since August of 2023 and our family has been very pleased with her care. The facility is relatively small, secure (locking gates and door to public areas), and I am not worried at all about Mom wandering out. The staff is very loving, caring, and attentive to mom's needs. I've also had the pleasure to dine with her several times and the food is always very very good! The facilities are clean and well maintained, and there is a lovely activities room and backyard/patio area. I can't say enough about how kind and accommodating the staff and management have been. I have an uncle who spent a lot of time with her daily, into the evenings, and he also raved about how wonderful my mom is cared for. As her care and medical needs have increased, we recently brought in hospice. They also commented on how much the med tech knows about my mom, and were impressed. Hospice and Summerfield are now working together to make the rest of mom's days as comfortable as possible. Is it perfect? No assisted living facility is ever perfect. But when there are issues (room needs cleaning, for example) it has always been addressed quickly. The staff is prompt at calling me when there is an issue with mom. The med techs and caregivers usually know off the top of their heads, what kind of day my mom is having. If there's been a shift change, whomever I ask always looks up the med tech notes and lets me know how she's been that day. We have many family members visit Mom, and they are always welcomed and never rushed out or made to feel obtrusive or in the way. In fact, lots of love and visits are strongly encouraged, and the staff is always so accommodating! There are many different types of facilities in San Diego area, and I recommend that Summerfield be on your list to check out if you have the need for memory care assisted living for a loved one. They are very competitively priced, and with the wonderful care, good food, activities, and kind people, this place is definitely worth a look. read more

We placed my dad in memory care at Summerfield just this week. I looked at facilities both here in Encinitas area and in Tennessee, where I live. We immediately felt comfortable with the management staff and each caregiver we have met. All are kind, well trained in dementia/memory care and attentive to our questions and concerns. Amy Causey My mother was at Summerfield for 4.5 years. 2000-2024. My mother in law was there for 2 years 2022-2024. We have since moved both to a wonderful Board and Care in La costa. Summerfield is a chronically understaffed and underpaid facility. While there are a few good staff they are overworked. Summerfield lied to us and told us our mom had been given the COVID vaccine only to find out mom had refused it months later. During covid she was septic from a UTI. I noticed her through her window laying half in and half out of her chair. They never noticed she was ill. After Covid we thought it would get better. New management promised more staff which never happened on a consistent basis. Laundry was constantly being lost or stolen . Hallways smelled like urine. I was there daily and would see people sitting in their pee, laying on the floor after fallen, yelling for help, and generally not cared for properly. Towards the end of our stay my mom kept collapsing. A hospital visit determined she was toxic from an overdose of medication. Turns out for 9 months my mom was refusing her medication at night with one particular med staff . She was marking it refused but the management were not getting the correct reports. In a period of 3 months she had refused 109 essential medications. Everytime blood work was done it showed she needed a higher dose of meds because of the refusals that they were not catching. I caught this . She ended up toxic from the higher amounts of meds. When I asked the medtec why she never mentioned to tell me mom was refusing meds she said that most families don't care. This medtec is still employed by Summerfield. Upper management are friendly and full of promises then could care less after they get you in. Our LVN sometimes worked from home and our director knew how to put you off with her lies and promises. As far as my mother in law it wasn't better. They allowed her to fall out of her wheelchair numerous times and one time dropped her when weighing her. As with my mom they lost all her clothes and numerous times I found poop all over her hands and face. As I said before there are a handful of good staff. But overall this is a corporate run facility who underpays their staff and understaffs their facility. They may say their ratio is 1:8 but that is a lie. Maybe 1:14. I would not even give this place a one star. The "person in charge" is a horrible woman, not caring about her residents. She sits in her office with her two dogs, eating and holding court with her staff. The residents are in their rooms all day, and meal time is a sad event. My husband was here for 3 days, sent here in error because they did not emphasize it was memory care, not the respite care we were told. My mom has been at several care facilities over the years and Summerfield is by far the best. The food is actually quite good and the activities are great. The other care facilities would just let my mom lay in bed all day. At Summerfield, they get her up and dressed every morning and gets her involved in the activities which she really enjoys. There are lots of nice outside patios to get fresh air and sunshine. The caregivers are really exceptional. Most of them have been there a long time which is unusual. The turnover rate of employees is usually pretty high in these places. That just goes to show you that the caregivers are happy there and it shows! read more

My mother had been living with my brother, however, her dementia had progressed to where he could no longer manage her care in his home. We mistakenly moved her into an assisted living facility close to Somerford Place thinking it would give her a more "normal" experience, but it quickly became obvious that they were unable to give her the attention she needed. In realizing this, we took the time to look at many memory care facilities (including Board and Care homes) and, after visiting Somerford Place and speaking to a relative of a long-time Somerford resident, we decided to move her here. Since then, I've had much contact with the office and care staff. Their Sales Director Carrie Compton performs her job like a Social Worker; what are the specifics of the situation and, with all things considered, what is the best solution at hand. She was conscientious, professional and gave me a very comprehensive tour. The entire staff is friendly, engaged and attentive. They are all personable, dedicated and welcoming to visitors. They were quick to learn my mother's idiosyncrasies and adapt to them. Their programs are enjoyable, upbeat and professional. My mother is happier and more relaxed because of how well she is being taken care of. In summary, I was nervous about moving her to a memory care facility as I imagined it to be an environment that would be un-stimulating and sad. My Mom has been here for a few years now, and I can't say enough good things about Somerford Place. She has blossomed under their care beyond our expectations. The staff is truly excellent - cheerful, friendly and genuinely loving towards the residents. They keep everyone active and out of their rooms all day, and have lots of daily activities and programs to keep minds and bodies healthy. The families are invited to holiday events and family activities on a regular basis. It's a welcoming and comfortable environment, entirely different than I expected. Isn't it the case though that the majority of caregivers get $12/hour and haven't had a raise in over a year? That is not a living wage, and that's why I believe they are underpaid. I had a candid conversation with one of the people in charge of salaries about this at one time. The CEO of Five Star Living made over $ 1 million last year (see citation below). Yet many employees at Somerford work two jobs, and none can afford to live in the area. Our family moved my mom here a few months ago. The staff could not be more friendly, and the facility makes a sincere effort to look after their residents. The food is OK, not gourmet but adequate. There are several well-maintained outdoor areas that residents have access to, even though the facility as a whole is locked down. This makes it feel far less confined than it actually is. They arranged a mother's day brunch this year in one of the courtyard areas that was very nice. Because the facility is dedicated to Alzheimer's care, there's a real range of ability levels among the residents. My mom is somewhat higher functioning than some other residents, which is a little frustrating for her at times. But she was able to find some other residents about at her level and they have become friends. In general, it was a good move for my mom. read more

I recently had to bring my mother to a spot for temporary rehabilitation and I toured a few places before bringing her to one. Unfortunately the insurance wound not cover my first choice being Somerford... If I would have had the extra funds I would have paid the difference! He had two emergency room visits, one where he had slipped on his own urine in the middle of the night. I have an uncle at Somerford. I brought my mother along who has recently had a stroke and is unable to walk without a walker. During our visit a resident picked up a heavy chair over his head and was coming towards us. He put the chair down and proceeded to pull his pants down several times. We asked him to stop. Most of our visit was spent on trying to get this resident away from us. He found a dolly the workmen use and was pushing it towards us repeatedly. How he got access to this piece of work equipment is another example of a lack of attention from the management. I ran into to activities room where the activities director, Rachael was. She said he has a right to be there. I told her what was happening and she repeated herself. I went back out to the covered patio area where we were sitting. The out of control resident started throwing his shoes at my mother and uncle. I ran to report what was going on to the manager, Joey. He said, "I should leave if I didn't like it". I thought he hadn't heard me correctly so I repeated that this resident was menacing us and throwing his shoes at my mother and the resident we came to visit. He said we should move to another place to sit. The activities room was occupied and his neighborhood was on lockdown for a scabies outbreak a few days prior. I did not feel comfortable having us all sit in there because I did not want to be exposed or expose my elderly mother to scabies. It's also not as nice to visit in that indoors space as it is outside and the offending resident lives in that neighborhood as well. My Mother and the resident we were visiting, my uncle, can not even get up without assistance. The nuisance resident would be allowed to follow us. This did not seem like the solution. A simple solution would have been for a staff member or the manager to redirect this man. Instead he wanted to redirect us and allow this man to continue and possibly and quite likely harm himself. I was lectured by the manager, Joey. He was telling me that this out of control resident had a behavioral problem, No kidding, and that I could leave. The manager, Joey was extremely hostile to me and talking under his breath at times. I received no help and ended my visit early because I did not want my disabled elderly mother or disabled elderly uncle or myself to be harmed by this resident. Not to mention the horrible treatment we were given. I do have understanding that this nuisance resident is not culpable for his behavior however I do not possess the tools to help him nor should I be put in a position to do so. That is why Somerford should hire enough staff when they take on a resident who always causes a disturbance and not expect visitors to intervene. I've been there before when my visit with my Uncle, a resident and myself have been harassed by this same man. This really upset me getting lectured and receiving no help from management. I have been looking for other placements for my uncle, but the scabies outbreaks make it impossible for good homes to accept him while the outbreaks are current. We had a room for him at Seacrest and have to wait until all scabies outbreaks are resolved at Somerford. These scabies outbreaks have been going on since last May, that I know of. Uncle has been treated many times with the toxic meds used to treat scabies with. I feel trapped between a rock and a hard place. I do want him out but they gave his bed at Seacrest to someone else and we are waiting until we can get him out of Somerford. There are a few wonderful staff people working there at Somerford but it cannot make up for the chronic scabies outbreaks and turnover of the staff and management and the many times when I arrived to find him with urine soaked pants and changed his depends and pants myself. There was no manager on sight or activities director for months. The residence watched a lot of tv with little to no interaction with others. Currently, the past few weeks there is an activities director and currently a new manager. I was thinking things would be better, but unfortunately, that is not the case. If you don't care about your loved ones and don't visit them then You wouldn't care about subjecting your loved ones to this place. read more

Okay, so it doesn't surprise me that I get to be the first review for this place since the demographic breakdown here leans young. But, I also can't be the only person looking for reviews for this type of business, so here goes... Ultimately, I needed somewhere for mom to go while I went to Puerto Rico this past summer. They were one of the only places that had a space for her with such short notice. Lynda (gone now) the contact person was really nice. She gave mom and I a tour of the facility and explained the respite process assuaging most of my anxiety. Since then, mom now goes to day care a couple times a week and has an overnight stay every once in a while. Mom loves going here which is one of the primary reasons I still take her. I, on the other hand have been a bit disappointed with a few items that I have brought to the attention of the staff there. The breakdown follows. Benefits: 1. They do both respite care and day care at this facility; which in my research is not the norm. This is a positive thing because the environment is more established - the clients, the employees, etc. 2. They offer extended hours before/after the usual 9-4 that most day care facilities operate. This is useful for me when I go into the office and I don't have to worry about leaving work at a specific time if I am caught up in something. Previously mom was at a day care that was open from 8-5 and it was a b*$% trying to get there by 5, and if it was raining, forget it. 3. Low turnover in staff. This is what I have been told and what I have seen since June. 4. Clean, safe and pleasant environment. 5. Actual art classes with watercolors, pastels, etc, not like art projects with coffee filters and pipe cleaners (is that what they are called, the fuzzy wire things?). 6. A permanent schedule is not required here. Other places require a commitment of specific days, a month at a time. I like being able to take mom to day care more or less depending on my schedule. Disadvantages: 1. I don't really feel like they cared about some of my requests. For months I had asked that they put an apron on mom while she was eating and it is something that is still not done consistently. Consequently, many of mom's shirts are ruined and unwearable due to stains. 2. I had a significant concern about a medication error that occurred while she was having an overnight stay and it took weeks for the Director to contact me. I am not pointing a finger at anyone specifically, but there is an obvious breakdown in communication somewhere within if that was the turn around time for such a critical issue. Additionally, I was extremely disappointed with the level of attention given to the situation as well as the follow up. 3. The location blows for me. North county traffic is never fun. 4. I feel like they give them too much food. Mom has actually gained weight since going here. I was surprised with the pure volume of food provided and desserts like ice cream and/or pie served on a daily basis. Side note: I know I sound really mean with this point but when you are older and in not such great shape, you really need to watch what you eat. I don't even eat desserts on a daily basis. Maybe they figure people in a nursing home are on the way out so give them any pleasure possible. But, my mom is still fairly young and getting better so we still focus on a healthy lifestyle. Mom is one of the younger people there - mentally, she runs circles around the other residents but physically she is probably one of the worst ones. Ideally, I would like to find another place to take mom that is geographically more convenient, with extended hours, and has a positive environment. But if you area reading this, then you might know how time consuming it is getting a loved one placed in a day care or facility. I am glad mom likes it here because it would kill me to drop her off in the morning knowing she was unhappy about it. All in all, what I have learned with elder care is even the best of the best, is not really the best. Paying for someone to provide care will always be a distant second to the care I provide for my mom. read more

While on a family trip, my husband and I were visiting my aunt at Somerford about three weeks ago for the first time. The whole staff was very friendly and attentive. But, we like to say a special thanks to Kim the morning nurse that really went beyond and above to make sure all of my aunts needs were tended too. Not only was she amazingly efficient and helpful; she has such a warm and pleasant beside manner that makes my aunty very happy, which makes me very happy. When her diagnosis of Alzheimer's became all too apparent, I finally accepted my mother's needs had changed. After visiting half a dozen facilities, I decided to move her from assisted living to a place where everyone was experiencing varieties of this same problem. I chose Somerford Place in Encinitas, a small residence with only about 40 or 45 residents where all the employees could get to know her and me. The director explained the caregivers had been trained to deal with the ever changing conditions of Alzheimer's. During that first year there was a strong director and a staff recruited by the director who helped residents participate in daily activities such as chair exercises, music, art projects, and games. There were monthly support group meetings and many chances to speak with staff members. Family and friends were always welcomed, and some of us got to know each other. When the initial director left, she took a number of staff members with her. A skeleton staff made it more difficult for Somerford to transition to another director. Several have come and gone. I was discouraged until they managed to hire Lori. Today I believe Somerford staff and residents are once again in good hands with a new director who does not confine herself to a front office but circulates through the building talking to residents, staff, and family. She has plans for a community garden with residents participation. On Father's Day she has planned entertainment, a cookout for residents and their families, and an antique car show. I sense she is evaluating staff and trying to make adjustments to their schedules as she hires new caregivers. She volunteered that she loves Somerford because it is small and she has every intention of staying. Staff members tell me they like her. This is all good. Alzheimer's is devastating to one's family. It is ever changing. Today my mother can do almost nothing for herself. Caregivers get her up in the morning, dress her, change her, put her in a wheelchair, take her to meals, and yes, even feed her. If she has a bruise, they call me and the Hospice nurse. When her feet swell, they know to take off her socks and put her in a recliner. They talk with Hospice staff about her needs. They clean her room and make sure to get her to the in house beauty salon each week. In nice weather they encourage her to sit out in the warm court yard. Each of these matters seem more important to me than to her as she continues to lose memory and weight and sleeps more and more, all signs of this disease as it relentlessly pursues the person you love. If you are looking for a place for one of your relatives, it is tempting to choose a place where you think you might like to live. You want a private room, good food, an open visitation policy, activities, a caring staff. You can get this at Somerford. But as Alzheimer's progresses, priorities change. One's needs are simple: safety, quality care and compassion. I believe Somerford Encinitas exhibits these qualities under the direction of this new director, Lori. read more

I was in search throughout the North County area of San Diego and wanted to find the right place that I could call home for my mother. A place that would be comfortable for my mother, with a staff that cared for her as family, and at a fair price. I am both blessed and extremely grateful to have found Somerford Place, as ironically it was my last stop. After taking the tour of the facility and talking to management, nursing care, assistance, planners, and anyone else I could, I immediately knew this was the place for my mother. Believe it or not, I was skeptical at first because it seemed too good to be true; however, things have not only gotten better, they continue to improve as the staff learns my mother and her needs. Since I am not able to see her on a daily basis she now has a second family. They encourage friendships as they found the perfect roommate for my mother. They focus on her personal likes so as to make sure she is stimulated (gardening, crafts, gatherings, etc.). The food is homemade and healthy. In conclusion, as I am sure you can tell, I can't say enough good things about Somerford Place and could go on and on. That is why I give it a rating of 5 out of 5. They are modest and down to earth and that is why I am putting my opinion in writing so that if you are in my similar situation you can hear the story of someone that is currently utilizing their services. This place might look nice on the outside but the nightmare begins once you place your loved one on the inside. Don't be fooled. Looks can be deceiving! My Dad was placed here not even 10 months ago and they've had 4 Directors and 4 Assistant Directors in the last 10 months. They've also had a stream of different employees, cooks, etc., and different caregivers flowing through every few weeks. At least half the caregivers couldn't give a rip about the residents and the care that was being given to the residents was deplorable. The poor workers who did care were so overworked they just couldn't accomplish everything they were asked to do. Residents sitting around in wet pants, dirty clothes and not getting all their meds are just three of the many issues we faced in the short amount of time my Dad lived here. The state should shut this terrible place down! Many promises of improvements to my Dad's care were made, but never followed through with. We finally moved him to Silverado and what a difference between the two. Your loved one deserves better than this place! read more
