So Randy's is located at Eglinton and Oakwood in Toronto across the street from the subway station. A combination of Google searches of "Caribbean food near me" and a desire to try out the new subway led me here on an office lunch. This is a small hole in the wall establishment -- it is a quick service, take out place only. It will never win an award for a beautiful interior design. You walk up to the cash register and a lovely lady with a sunny disposition will take your order and give you a ticket. In my case it was 2 Beef Patties and a Diet Coke for under $11. A few minutes later, my connection came out of the back room. Order 46! And he handed me a brown paper baggy with my goods in it. I took off like a bandit. My original plan was to bring the patties back to the office. But just like war, no plan survives an encounter with Patty time! I ate one on the subway and the other in the food court of my office. So these were fresh patties with fine layers of flaky crusty goodness. The beef was fresh and more plentiful than those frozen patties at the grocery store. There was some spice, but definitely mild. Randy's sells beef, chicken, and vegetable patties - always fresh, never frozen! However the chicken wasn't available the day we went. They also serve meals - oxtail, curry goat, and jerk chicken, as well as drinks - water, soursop juice, coconut water. Man, I don't know where to start but Randy's still got it. I called and did not get a call back but was inquiring about cocktail patties that I remembered eating when me and friends would be at Christmas parties together and someone would bring them. So I asked in the voicemail if they still sold "mini patties" because I had a work Christmas party coming up and wanted to get some. Never heard back. I even went as far as getting these "Randy's" patties from a big box supermarket that actually the real Randy's had to put out a disclaimer about on their insta. No, Randy's does NOT SELL frozen patties at Loblaws or No Frills. But who does sell them is Randy's Roti and Doubles. Completely different restaurant. Time pressed on and I had to decide if I was still bringing these patties for the potluck. Sent my hubby for a box to eat for us, a frozen dozen for a co-worker, and what do you know...they still sold cocktail size patties but only pre-ordered. Did that, and let people at work know I was bringing "Randy's (IYKYK) Jamaican beef patties" for the potluck. Ya, that's literally how I signed it on the potluck list. I know, extra. Anyway, they were so good!! Can I tell you the box my husband brought home that day...I'm ashamed to say I ate 3 ...not in a row, lol! But seriously, I had not had breakfast or lunch so two sufficed for a waaaay late lunch and I had one later. I also had not had one since the pandemic. They were so freakin' good! So it is open once again and thought I had better make sure to fix that patty craving in case they decide to shut down again! Lined up for ~1.5 hours only.to wait another 26 minutes for 4 chicken patties to complete the 12 max you are allowed to order at this time. The smells while you wait are intoxicating, I cannot lie. I ordered beef and chicken patties with coco bread and a medium oxtail plate. Let's start with the oxtail, rice and peas and slaw. Delicious. Super flavourful and properly cooked down. The slaw is great, as the crunch and tart from the vinegar is needed. The beef patties...good. Very flavourful, hint of spice but it's the pastry that stood out for me. It is not flakey, it's more wet and layered but not dry and flakey. The chicken filling was really different and delicious curry based and honestly, I'm glad I waited it out to be them. Oct 1st 2024 I bought a case of spicy beef patties from Randy's for $30 the filling was about 1/2 a cup of meat in each patty, fill of flavor spices so good notice the patty were cut smaller, i was willing to over look the size for quality, although the pastry was hard. Oct 24 2024 not even 3 weeks later the patties with all that flavor was gone..... They decided to go the cheapest way possible and cut down on their ingredients, The new patties need lots of improvement, the filling as no "flavor and very watery, pastry is hard not flaky, ate 3 and gave the rest away. you can imagine how awful it must be to give it away and never go back. read more

Delighted that Randy's opened that pop-up at the Easton's Centre. Was it worth the wait to finally get my hands on one? It was better than expected. The beef filling. The flakey crust. The heavenly aroma when they brought out a freshly batch of patties blew my mind. You can't imagine how that first tentative bite into that flakey crust with the molten beef happiness inside made my tastebuds swoon. Things could not get any better. But I was wrong there. I've been hearing about how Randy's has the best patties in the city, and yet it's taken me years to finally try their wares. (The perpetual Eglinton construction makes it difficult to get to the area, while the silly cash-only rule means I had to make sure I had actually money on hand. Who carries cash anymore??) Anyway, I showed up at around 5:00 on a recent Saturday and there were only a few people in line, so I was able to place my order within just a few minutes of arriving. I happened to have a $20 on me, so I got an order of 12 beef patties and was on my way. I obviously had no choice but to try one of the piping-hot patties in the car, and it was indeed very, very delicious. The first thing I noticed was just how tasty the pastry was; unlike some others, these patties boast a flaky, delicious pastry that ideally complements the filling. That filling is the star of the show, of course. It's as flavorful as I was hoping, and I enjoyed the periodic chunks of ground beef that showed up. I suppose my one complaint would be that it's not very spicy. I guess with the volume of product, it's easy to offer a middle-of-the-road (in terms of spice) patty but I wish they had options for those of us that like a little heat in their food. Jamaican patties are a total "thing" in Toronto. So much so that I think it could easily be considered one of the city's signature dishes. I don't know of any other city in Canada that does patties like Toronto does. When I saw that blogTO has Randy's listed as the #1 Best Jamaican Patties in town, I obviously had to check that out. Located in Forest Hill, you'll find them north of the central core. Their signage is very clear that they serve "tasty Jamaican dishes & patties." I visited on a Saturday afternoon and was sure to arrive right when they opened at 11am. However, even with my punctuality, the small take-out space was jammed and lined up full of people. This place is not a secret. In the restaurant there is basically no decor to speak of (the walls are orange and you'll see some white subway tile) and certainly no tables. It's strictly a to-go operation, which is kinda the way that patties work best anyhow. So what's the deal with patties? A patty is a baked pastry with a flaky shell that can contain a variety of savoury fillings. The most common and classic filling is beef but you can find these things stuffed with just about anything at this point. I love when places offer interesting yet on-point twists such as jerk chicken or ackee & saltfish. Patties are served hot and burning your mouth (inevitably) upon taking a bite is kind of part of it. I got myself into Randy's lineup and had to wait about 15-20 minutes until it was my turn to order. In this time I noted that there are other things on the menu in addition to patties; such as curry goat and oxtail. The rest is straight-up patties though. There are staff members bringing trays of patties out from the back nearly constantly, replenishing the stock in the warming oven up front. They've got a large refrigerator stocked with all sorts of different Jamaican sodas (Ting, of course) and juices. I really enjoyed the wide selection and had a tough time selecting the perfect Caribbean-esque beverage. Tropical Rhythms in Sorrel Ginger flavour seemed just right. I'd never tasted anything like this before! Sweet and spicy, it matched really well with the Jamaican flavours of the food. Sorrel is another name for the hibiscus or roselle flower, so you can expect the same sort of fragrant-tart taste. The ginger made this drink really zippy, which I liked a lot. I was at Randy's to eat one thing: PATTIES. They offer three flavours: Beef, Chicken or Veg. You can buy them individually, by the half dozen, or by the dozen. You can also get them baked (hot) or frozen. I ordered 1/2 Dozen Baked Patties ($9.50) with a mixture of flavours. The price is always right with patties. You really can't go wrong with a $1.58 hot pocket in your hand. I asked for three beef, two chicken, and one veg. I really liked the cute branded take-out boxes that they use when you order a dozen but because my order was smaller I just got a brown paper bag. I ate one of the beef patties immediately. Often you'll find that places will serve "beef" and "spicy beef" types, but not so at Randy's. They do one beef and it's spicy, which was a much welcomed discovery on my part since I always order the spicy one if there's an option. The pastry was light, flaky, and buttery, which I loved. The yellow colour of the pastry comes from making the dough with turmeric. The filling inside could have been a bit more plentiful, however I loved the stewy nature of the beef. This certainly wasn't crumbly or dry! The spicy seasoning was delicious and the savoury beef flavour came through really nicely. Every patty should taste just like this. I enjoyed the other two flavours as well. The chicken one was very nice because it was almost more like a curried chicken situation which brought some delicious sweet notes. The veg one was also surprisingly great, offering a flavourful mix of vegetables that still managed to carry some brightness to them. One thing that seemed a bit interesting was the fact that the pastry on the chicken patty seemed different from the beef and veg. It was denser, less flaky and less light. I'm not sure why, but it seems that they're using a slightly different dough for the chicken ones. You can't go wrong with a good patty. When they're done well, they're the absolute perfect snack. I must warn that it's piping hot, I've been burnt myself a few times now. The owner also mentioned that they don't do mild patties because In Jamaica there was no such thing. It's not overly spicy but it does have a nice little kick to excite those taste buds a bit (I can't handle spice too). You can buy them baked, frozen, or cold baked. I was recommended to try Randy's for their patties while in the area. Looking at the reviews, this place is well known for them. Small place with only a counter to eat in. This is a cash only place. There's a small P lot for parking but otherwise it has to be on the street during the designated hours. We ordered a dozen patties already baked as you could take it frozen too, half chicken and half beef along with the oxtail combo. Their patties are really good especially their beef but I'm not sure if they are the best of the GTA. I was disappointed that their patties were lacking on the filling inside. I really didn't like the chicken and I would stick to beef from now on. I loved the oxtail combo but for the price (close to $8), their portion was lacking. The little take-out shop offers four types of patties including Chicken, Veggie, Ackee & Codfish and Beef. The crust is flaky. The meat inside is a finely ground meat with a savory gravy. Had a craving for a beef patty one Saturday afternoon, and read about Randy's Patties being #1 in the city, so I took a trip down. We got there around 12:30 and there was already a line 10 people deep. With COVID-19 they aren't letting more than a few people in at a time so be prepared to wait if you're not getting there when it opens. We got a dozen frozen patties to go ($17.95) and a few for the road to eat. They only had spicy patties when we went, so mild must've been sold out. The patty was flaky, and the beef was juuuuiiiicyyyyy and the spice was nice. Leaves a nice lil burn in your mouth. I definitely feel like Randy's is on par with Allan's (my other fave), but I HIGHLY recommend it!!!!!! read more

The spicy beef patty here redefined Jamaican patties for me. I have been a longtime fan of the golden savoury Caribbean pastry, ever since I grabbed one at a subway stop to placate my growling stomach as a starving student. Over time, I came to realize that buying the frozen patties in bulk and microwaving it myself was far more cost effective. I now say with conviction that the frozen stuff pales in comparison to the patties here. If the frozen Patty King patties were Corollas, Randy's patties would be Lamborghinis. At first bite, the warm, delicate patty flaked apart into thousands of layers, giving no resistance. It yielded the treasure within - a hot, spicy, oozing ground beef filling. The spiciness was enough to give a kick, but was not overwhelming, and it stayed for a while afterward, like the memory of a heated kiss. Each bite consistently gave the same symphony of flavour and texture, and it was done far too soon. This patty has ruined me for all other patties. It is well worth the $1.95 price tag and the harrowing neverending traffic on Eglinton West. Ever since we tried the beef patties here at Randy's, all other ones suddenly don't compare - these ones are honestly the best ones we've had in the city! The beef and gravy has fused into some sort of delicious lava. If you grew up on Randy's and then ate a patty from the frozen food isle you'd realize how lucky you were to have it so good growing up and now everything isn't a good as they were when you were young. It's all a lie now. Thank god Randy's is still around. Randy's patties are so good that you can't eat them as soon as you get them. Why? Because the inner meat part is boiling hot on the inside. Why? A beef Patty costs around $1.50 each. A box dozen costs around $13. The filling in the beef wasn't very full but had ample amount of gravy and you can taste the ground beef bits. It was hearty and reminded me of chili. It was also messy and dripped so be careful about that. You can even see the oil in the gravy. The chicken patty was marked with a red dot. Nothing like the frozen beef patties we used to get in the supermarket...you know what I'm talking about. The patties with that brown mush as filling. Anyway, the chicken patty was interesting. It tasted like some sort of curry seasoned chicken with veg. It was good, way better than the chicken patties I've had at the supermarket. But I love the beef patty more. These patties cost about $1.50 a pop, the chicken one slightly more at $1.75? I wish I had gotten a dozen box home... guess ill have to make a special trip out here, just to satify that craving. read more

A friend who is from Jamaica insisted that Randy's has the best patties in town. I went there to get a quick bite to eat on a Monday afternoon. A fresh beef patty (eaten with an incredibly soft coco bun) later, I can say that he's probably right. A good portion of meat - more than I'm used to in a patty (although my previous patties have been either frozen grocery ones, or the sad ones that reside under red lights in some dive). The pastry was oh so flaky. I'm going to need to vacuum the car when I get back home. No seating. I didnt see a debit machine so I'm assuming it's cash only. Street parking a bit east of the store on Eglinton, just a minute's walk away. There really is a guy out front selling DVDs. I couldn't resist and bought a dozen frozen too.
