I was in Bloor West Village looking for a late lunch spot. There are a ton of options in the area…read more A lot have menus displayed on windows and outside on sandwich boards. Bao Bao advertised their daily specials which is a rounded up $12. On Saturday this was a giant cha siu bao, choice of dim sum, and scallion pancake. Not bad for dim sum at around $4 a plate. Sure you can probably find cheaper in Chinatown or on the east end but even then those are probably specials themselves. The inside of the store shares space with a Kung Fu Tea. They are owned by the same people so you'll see the employees working on both sides. There's a counter on the left side past a few tables where I put in my order. They actually had another sign at this counter with other daily specials - it seems that these are available every day. One of the ones that looked good was a Roast Duck on Rice for $12 but I went with the dim sum. I'm not going to lie it looked a tad sketchy in the case there. They were in there steamer baskets but everything looked a little limp. I was able to choose from different dim sums like sticky rice, siu mai, and crystal shrimp dumplings. The siu mai looked like the best choice so I went with that. I was instructed to have a seat at any table and that they would bring my order out to me. Two mugs of jasmine tea followed as well as some napkins, disposable chopsticks, soy sauce, and hot sauce on a paper plate. The food came in a Styrofoam box. The scallion pancake was wrapped in foil to keep it warm. Because the pancake was enclosed in foil it looked like it was lacking in crispiness. It still held a lot of its flakiness and I think they may have either grilled or baked it at some point because there were some char marks that gave it a really welcome smoky flavour! Despite the siu mai not looking super fancy or anything, they tasted good! A tab of the hot sauce was nice in it too. The cha siu bao was also decent too. It was a big one - I'd say at least double the size of your average ones. The outside looked more like a giant soup dumpling so I actually wasn't entirely sure what it was until I got down into it. The bun texture was decent and the inside was good too. There as no chewy or gristle type pieces in the bun. The employees were pretty nice and even came to check in on me at one point, asking if I needed a refill on the tea. They accept a wide variety of payment options. There isn't any discount if you pay in cash just as an FYI.

The serving area, the tables, and even the bathrooms are pristine. The food quality and variety is great. The desert section is incredible and you will want seconds. Try the maple ice cream! The variety of food goes from everything you can imagine at a Chinese buffet like sushi and fried rice to American options like burgers and fries, to surprises in-between like New England clam chowder and prime rib. Tons of dessert- hard ice cream, cakes, pies, fruit, jello, even Crème brûlée and waffles. One of my favorite surprises was the variety of mocktails. Most places offer me pop as a mocktail or a Shirley Temple at best. Decent pricing. But it was better than the shrimp and vegetable chow mein which was equally saturated with sauce but had even less flavour. It was basically a watery broth thickened with a ton of cornstarch. I live nearby. I'd never eat here. There are great restaurants nearby. There are even mediocre restaurants nearby. It's not worth eating terrible food.
