I guess I know more than your average person but that is not saying much in my opinion. I grew up around shotguns and rifles and am a pretty good shot, but those are not MY guns. A year or so ago I decided I wanted to get a pistol for defense and sport. After talking to many of my friends and hopping onto the Google mobile I had my heart set on a Glock 19. HA! Good luck finding one of those right now. They are like Gold. I finally remembered that Metro was 5 minutes from my house and decided to go in one day. When I went in I talked to John. Let me stop right now and just say that John is Awesome... if you go in ask to talk to him. Ok back to the story. John asked me why I wanted the G19 and I explained it to him. He highly recommended I look into a different gun. John was 100% correct. The gun he recommended was a tad bit more but it fit me better and I absolutely love it. The cool thing is anything you buy here comes with a free 1 year range membership! THAT IS A $200 VALUE! These guys are not commission which is cool. I know this is true because I have seen them walk a sale because the gun the person wanted would not be a good fit. My dad was looking and was thinking about a fairly expensive gun. The guy he was dealing with (sorry man I forgot your name) asked him what he wanted it for and recommended that he wait until they get a cheaper gun in. My dad was ready to pull the trigger (pun intended) on this sale however the guy was looking out for my dad's best interest which is awesome! The indoor range is really nice and if you are a member affordable at $6 an hour. It is kept very nice and has excellent ventilation which is EXTREMELY important. I have not had to use them for any classes yet BUT they are priced affordable. Currently a CCW class is $150 which is a fair price.

After selecting the firearm I wanted, I provided my ID and was instructed to pay the full purchase price ($800) before the background check paperwork was completed. While filling out the background check application, they had already taken my payment. Only after my money was taken did they say that the address on my ID did not match the address I listed on the application. I explained that the address on my license was old and that the application reflected my current address. They told me I needed proof of address. I then drove about 20 miles back home and returned to the store with a check stub showing my address. When I returned, I was told that it would not be accepted. At that point I asked for my money back since I never received the firearm and the transaction could not be completed. The founder, Steve King, and the general manager, James Tomlinson, told me that they charge a 25% restocking/cancellation fee. This made no sense to me because I never received the firearm and did not cancel anything--the purchase simply could not proceed. I was then told that I could not receive my $800 cash back, and that I would have to wait for a check in the mail with 25% deducted from my money. My question is simple: why was my payment taken before verifying that my identification and address met the requirements to complete the purchase? For a first-time buyer trying to follow the law, this experience felt extremely unfair. I paid for a product I never received and was told I would lose a large portion of my money anyway. I hope the owners review this situation and make it right. Until then, I would strongly advise other customers to make absolutely sure all documentation is verified before paying, because in my case $800 was taken before basic verification was completed.

We paid for an initial weapon fee and then we were able to switch out weapons for free, just had to pay for ammunition. The staff were super helpful and knowledgeable. I was suprised and a little skeptical of how easy it was to just go shoot! We had a blast though. The safety gave us a quick rundown on how to use the machine to move the targets. They had really fun posters for the Halloween season. We shot at pictures of a zombie Jeffery Dahmer, world dictators., and pumpkins. Neat concept to have a restaurant connected to a shooting range too- made a good birthday suprise for my dad! They even have soap to remove lead in the bathrooms if you choose to eat after shooting.

My wife made me take the course because she is concerned that, as a club musician, I am an easy target. After all, I am the last person on the street (usually downtown or in Soulard), just got paid, and am carrying valuable amplifiers and other easily pawnable equipment. After all, my $1,200 amp will easily pawn for $25 anywhere by some douchebag meth head. So I purchased a handgun (9mm Glock 43) and took the class. It was located in a pretty run-down American Legion Hall in Maryland Heights, and was taught by an older gentleman, Dennis, who is a certified NRA instructor. At first, this made me more concerned because I am not a supporter of the NRA. He said that he was actually the youngest member of this AL post. He was really knowledgeable about all things gun-related. He is a veteran, experienced hunter, and an excellent instructor. The classroom portion of the course took 6 hours, and they actually flew by. There were only 6 students, and everyone was polite, interested, and participated in all the exercises and discussions, which covered everything from beginner (me) to advanced gun-owning. I truly learned a lot, from how to properly handle the pistol, to how to actually carry a concealed weapon, important legalities, and various scenarios and how they can play out in real life situations. Since there is no firearms range on the premises, we then caravanned to the Gateway Gun Club, where we shot 20 rounds in practice, then another 20 rounds, of which 15 must hit the target. Dennis was there supervising, and ensuring that each of us were safe and skilled enough to pass the shooting portion of the course. It would have been nice if the AL Hall would have had a range, but I really have no complaints at all. He helped me refine my grip and I put all 20 rounds in the silhouette, with 3 actually hitting the bullseye! My only real complaint is that once I completed the course, I had to take my paperwork to the St. Louis County Police Department in Clayton, which is currently like navigating through an obstacle course of barricades and narrowed streets. Now I just have to wait several weeks for approval and then go back there to pick up my official card. Cost was $85 for the course and $90 to the Police Dept. I appreciate everything I learned and may go back for the advanced course.

I decided to discontinue my subscription and called the location that I used. They gave me a contact email to use to stop my service. No response and I emailed them 5 times in a week and a half prior to my due date for The automatic payment was still taken. This is apparently the only way to stop subscription. Never heard back from them. I had to call my CC company to formally dispute the charges. Very frustrating and disappointing service. They seem to make it difficult to cancel. I brought it back in, and the guy at the counter tested the gun and said I need to be using 147 grain ammo. He said the problem was that I was using 115 and 124 grain ammo before. The first sales person didn't say anything about that, and I actually had purchased a 1000 round case of 115 grain ammo. I think there's something wrong with the gun because I did an Internet search and it said this gun has no problem with 115 grain ammo. I'm pretty sure there is something wrong with the gun and I have to use a hotter ammo to solve the malfunction. The original sales rep said if I have any problem with it just to bring it in and made it sound like they would take care of me. But the second guy who is extremely well spoken had me half convinced I need to use (more expensive) hotter ammo. I'm certain there's something wrong with the gun and now I have to call the manufacturer and deal with them. Update 6/27/25 (two months later): Shortly after my Google review was published, James, one of the managers reaches out to me. He apologizes about the employee that said I needed hotter ammo - he shouldn't have said that. He encourages me to bring the gun in and they take a look at it. Several of them shoot it, it works fine, but it jammed once while I was shooting it with them. They blame it on my grip; my grip is not tight enough so the slide can't operate properly. I'm thinking that can't be right -- I've worked with an instructor, a former professional competition shooter, and he taught me a proper two-handed thumbs-forward grip. I've shot all the major brand handguns, including high-end race guns like Staccatos, and I have never had a problem with jams. I insist my grip, while not pro-grade like these guys, is not the problem. I tell them I want to return the gun. I'm offered a meager trade-in, good for another gun or store credit. I expected they'd stand behind the product, as an authorized reseller for Canik, that they'd take it up with Canik, but they 'stuck to their guns' that the gun was fine, and they could not improve upon their offer. I decline their offer and say I'll send it to Canik. At this point, as if I had some really original idea to do so, THEY offer to send to Canik. Canik, who has a location in the US, still took the better part of two months to send it back to me (it felt like it was being sent off to Europe or something). Canik replaced the slide spring. I get it back, test it, it works fine. But by this time, I've lost my taste for Canik and this whole experience, so I want to trade it in, and get a gun that I've owned before and trust, a Smith & Wesson. I asked my point of contact there, Tyler, what it would cost after the trade-in and adding a red dot. I never did get a reply. I emailed Tyler and James a couple times, called a couple times, can't reach anyone. Ghosted. I feel that the way this should have gone down was that as soon as I had a claim the gun (under warranty), was defective, and if they were not able to fix it, that they should have offered to send it to the factory for repair. Rather than inconvenience and embarrass me, with claims I needed different ammo, or had a bad grip, they should have stood behind what they sold, and offered to get it resolved via the manufacturer. I will probably continue to tell people that The Range West is a top-notch gun range, but I would not recommend purchasing a gun there, as they don't seem to want to stand behind what they sell.
