A lot…read moreof the doctors and staff are fine, but one recent incident was completely inappropriate and has left me feeling very uncomfortable. During a brief insurance lapse of just a few weeks, when my 2-year-old with asthma began coughing, I reached out for help getting his usual medication -- and the entire experience was unnecessarily cold, bureaucratic, and dismissive. I was told that because I hadn't filled that prescription since April (less than a year ago), we'd need to come back in person, even though it was clearly on record. I was also told there were no refills left, but CVS confirmed there actually was one -- which they refused to transfer from our old pharmacy on Long Island. When I tried to clarify what to do next, the front desk repeatedly talked over me -- even after I calmly said, "I'm still speaking" -- and then hung up. A doctor called back at one point and left a voicemail saying, "Call if you need anything," but when I did, I was told the doctor wouldn't speak with me and that I'd need to wait until Monday for the office manager. It's now Wednesday, and no one has called me back. Most concerningly, I was repeatedly shamed for not taking my son to a local doctor -- even after explaining that we were temporarily uninsured and trying to avoid hundreds of dollars in fees for what should have been a simple refill of a medication already on record, prescribed for a 2-year-old child with asthma. One staff member even accused me of not bringing my son in for months, which was both untrue and completely inappropriate. He is fully up to date on all well visits and vaccines per AAP guidelines -- I simply hadn't needed to bring him in because he hadn't been sick until now. The lack of compassion and communication was deeply disappointing. I'm a concerned mother trying to prevent my toddler's asthma from turning into something serious while waiting a few days for insurance to restart. It shouldn't take this much effort, or meet this much indifference, to get a necessary medication for a young child. Ironically, the same week this happened, the office was still calling and texting me to schedule well visits -- so perhaps their systems, and their approach to patient care, both need some reevaluation.

This office was referred to me by a close friend who has two young children, but I didn't want to go to the first office referred to me right off the bat. That is why I placed several calls to other pediatrician offices. This office immediately stood out. And now, even after going for my son's two month wellness check up, I know for sure I made the right decision. Right off the bat, from my initial call, the office manager was extremely informative. She sent me paperwork prior to our first visit and let me know how things would go about after my son was born. I was instantly relieved as they explained what needs shortly after birth. Our first visit (and the others right after, because our son was a bit on the smaller side) were just as informative as my initial phone call. I also had a visit with their lactation specialist who was super cool, easy-going, and very reassuring. She is there every Tuesday, and you could book an appointment just to see her or book an appointment to see her on the same day your child has and appointment. They also have a great protocol put into place for COVID. You wait in your car and once you arrive you text the office to check-in. They text you back with a number for where you can wait in the waiting room. Appointments are very well spaced out and I feel safe visiting each time. They have several doctors at the practice, and we've seen three of them so far and they all have been great. The nurse staff is awesome as well. After today's two month check up I noticed that our nurse recognized our son, which was very refreshing. The office itself is very clean, and fun for children. Each room has a different theme and there's also a huge fish tank in the center of the waiting room, very entertaining for children. Finally, I do have to speak to their telehealth system. A few weeks back we had a question and didn't know if it was serious enough to bring our baby boy in. We set up the app and booked a telehealth appointment and within 30 minutes we saw one of the doctors, virtually. He was empathetic that we were first time parents and reassured us that our baby was OK and we were doing a good job. If I could praise this place more I would. I am super comfortable with my baby being treated here, and look forward to him growing with this office.

Once I was left on hold for 10 minutes and no one ever came back. This all had gone on for over two weeks. On my 4th call, the secretary said "what's the number where I can call you back" and I said to her, in a very nice and calm tone: "I just want to let you know, this is the fourth time I've called this office, and no one has yet given me a call back." There was a long silence, and then she said "what's the number where I can call you back?" I said, "but I just need to know that you will actually call me back." She said "what's the number where I can call you back." Like a pissed off robot--no apologies, no concern for the fact I had been chasing this office down for coming on three weeks. So I gave her the number and said please call me back. And...she didn't. I believe this was Dana. Three days later I call the office again. Now I'm upset. I explained what had happened so far. I said I wanted to speak to the office manager, sandy, who wasn't in. The secretary I was speaking to asked if she could help--this was Christina. She was really nice and apologetic and gave me an appointment the same day (she did call back.) So our appointment is supposed to be today. Our baby was sick. Yesterday I get a voicemail saying Dr. Martocci has Covid, and is cancelling all patients today and rescheduling for next week. Alright, nothing you can do about that. But then I get a call this morning, again from Dana, asking me if I can come in this morning. I said "I thought the doctor had Covid, isn't that why our appointment was cancelled?" Long silence. I'm put on hold. She comes back and says "the doctor is feeling better. He's leaving early today. He's still seeing patients in the morning." I said "how can he be seeing patients if he has Covid?" She said, "if you're more comfortable, you can reschedule for next week." Umm, what? I said "I don't understand, is the doctor contagious?" She said "no." Long pause. I said I would call back. Five minutes later, after talking to my partner, I'm immediately put on hold and no one comes back. I call again, it says the office is closed. I call a third time, it says the office is closed. Now I'm wondering if they're purposely not answering MY calls. My partner calls from his cell phone, Dana picks up in one ring. I am honestly so infuriated and upset I am in tears. Hoping to finally speak to the manager to explain what my experience has been. I just hope someone cares because this is not okay. This might be the best pediatrician in the world, but who can deal with being treated this way? Now it's been over a month of this, and my daughter still hasn't been seen for her four month visit. Also, anyone who knows me knows I am a really calm and polite person, very gentle and patient. I can't understand why I'm being treated this way, or if this is standard for parents at this office.

Dr. Martocci always gives his advice but allows parents to decide how to take care of their children. For example he tells me what shots are due but allows me to decide what shots will be given or I can decide not to get shots at all. My son would always get a high fever whenever he received a shot. I told Dr. Martocci my concern about a booster for the MMR. He suggested to have a titers test done to check and see if my son had enough of the MMR antibodies. My son indeed had enough antibodies and so he never needs to have another MMR shot again! Dr. Martocci supports our family and appreciates that we try to eat organic as much as possible. He never forces his opinion on us. He provides treatment options and allows us to decide how to treat our children. I highly recommend this practice to anyone with children.

Melissa started my IV. I never felt a pinch. It was magical. Melissa has a soft touch. Gennaro & Arley were the techs who performed my test. They made sure my back was comfortable & were very patient with me. Gennaro spoke to me throughout the test. He let me know I was doing the breathing correctly. That helped clear my anxiety. Arley was a big help sitting me up after the test. She put a great pressure wrap on me since I take blood thinners. My experience was amazing. This crew of employees were outstanding, professional, caring, & kind. They are an asset to NYU Langone. I thank you guys for the great care I received.

It's frustrating to feel dismissed and uninformed when safe, effective options exist. Women deserve better.
