Look at your bill before you pay!!! They charged us $35 instead of $30 (as is written on their menu) for the Family Combo. And, another $5 for gluten free bread (we never asked for gluten free, and the menu says that bread is included). When we asked about the $10 extra charge that we didn't plan on, they said that they ran out of regular bread and had to give us gluten free. And the $35 instead of $30 was because they have a new menu coming out with the higher price, but "its not yet printed." This is misrepresentation and illegal. They were dishonest. They never told us about the price change in the beginning, when we were ordering. When we wanted them make it right and remove the $10 extra charge, they wouldn't. They just said its now on the "new" menu, which is "not yet printed." A bunch of BS in my opinion. It felt like they knew exactly what they are doing in scamming Americans who come into their restaurant. Be careful! Or just go some places else. Called in for a pickup on a weekend and was given a 15 min estimate for the food to be ready. I show up 20 min later and the restaurant was not at all busy, but it was clear that they hadn't even started preparing it yet because they were surprised I even showed up. I waited another 10-15 min for my order and they ended up getting the details of the order wrong, which I double-checked on the phone. They were kind enough to offer me water while I waited though! My favorites were the veggie combo, green chicken and the Fish Glass... which had so much flavor and was delicious. The atmosphere is really is very thoughtfully done and beautiful. The walls are a warm buttery color with art on them, and when you come in there is a beautiful subtle smell of copal or frankincense. It feels very clean and clear. Overruled by my party it was decided dinner was to be Ethiopian at Ras Dashen. Not normally a fan of Ethiopian, I will say this was definitely the best I've had. Right in the central district and just steps from a few other Ethiopian spots is Ras Dashen. The interior isn't special but the decor certainly spices it up with wall hangings and other cultural charms hung up or displayed. Our hostess was also our server. She was very nice and made decent suggestions which helped the experience. Our party of 4 got the family platter which was a great choice, plenty for all of us with a nice assortment of proteins - chicken, beans and veggie friendly options. We love trying different Ethiopian spots in the area and this didn't disappoint. We got the doro wot, the kitfo (medium), and vegetarian sampler which included misir wot, shiro wot, a salad, and cheese. Everything was more than enough to feed three of us. We had a confusing moment when we paid the bill. There is a credit card fee that they add so we we decided to pay cash. The waitstaff weren't aware of the fee so they kept the same total and we had to do some back and forth to resolve that. It's frustrating when restaurants do that. Overall, great food but I'm hesitant to support restaurants that hide fees. read more

WOW. Where to start... I've been in love with Ethiopian food since I was first introduced to it in 2001 in San Francisco.. The warmth of the spices, the heartiness of the meats and vegetables, the sensuality of the food and the conviviality of sharing a plate are all just magical to me. Now I've lived in a lot of foodie cities (Miami, New York, Los Angeles and now Seattle) and I always seek out a good Ethiopian restaurant looking to capture that magic and get my soul-comforting food fix. Unfortunately I think Ethiopian food can (and often is) done pretty averagely whilst still being enjoyable. I usually leave satisfied at best, but mostly underwhelmed. Certainly I'm never wowed by the culinary experience... until last night.... WOW. THIS IS WHAT I KNEW ETHIOPIAN FOOD COULD AND SHOULD TASTE LIKE... and what I'd always hoped for from an Ethiopian meal. How can I ever eat average Ethiopian food again? I can't imagine ever trying another restaurant and risk the disappointment that would follow and the anger of knowing how incredible it can taste. THIS MEAL WAS OUTSTANDING. It was just me and my husband and we ordered 4 meat dishes and the vegetarian platter - wayyy more food than we needed but we love to try a lot of dishes and really get to know a restaurant. Let me tell you, this food is made with so much love and care. There was a delicateness to the flavors and textures of each dish. You could taste the richness and heat of the herbs and the slightly sweet almost floral quality of the various seasonings which just amplified each vegetable and meat. Despite the heartiness of the dishes there was a freshness to them. The meats were so juicy which is rare in Ethiopian cuisine as very lean meats are usually used and they dry out fast. But the lamb, beef, chicken and fish were all savory perfection, with each meat's flavor clean and bright. And there was a beautiful balance between the dark earthy flavors of the stews and sauces and the beautiful light tang of the injera. Despite the heartiness of the dishes there was a freshness to them. You could taste the quality of the ingredients. Every bite was joyful. Now, be forewarned, you will have to wait longer than you are use to for your meal. I don't know if this is always the case but it was for us last night. We went early (6pm) on a Wednesday night; it was relatively slow with maybe 5 tables mostly 2 tops and one group of 4- and we waited almost an hour and a half for our food to come out. BUT I can tell you that, as soon as I took that first bite, all I could think about was OMG THE WAIT WAS SO WORTH IT!! And I mean it. I will come back no matter how long the wait is. You can taste the love, the integrity and the pride in this cooking. And that kind of care and perfection in food is damn hard to find and should never be rushed nor compromised. I was even further blown away when I realized our entire meal was the work of a single woman working alone in the kitchen, creating every dish to order. I cannot find any information on her not even on the restaurant's website which is unfortunate because I think she deserves all the praise and accolades one bestows on a great Chef. And again, SHE DOES IT ON HER OWN. Mind-blowing. So keep this in mind when you start wondering what's taking so long... BE PATIENT. Sit back, order some beers, engage with your fellow dinners and enjoy the waiting. You're in for an amazing meal. read more

I also tried their vegetarian combo and some standouts were- the cabbage curry (forgot the og name sadly), okra curry, misir wot, green beans and carrot curry. I love Ethiopian food and have found that the smaller more unassuming places have the most flavor and pour the most love into their dishes. Not only does the family style way of eating from the same dish appeal to me, as it is forces a group to literally come together and share the meal, but the actual flavors, textures, and variety of dishes that seep into the bread is fantastic. This restaurant had great reviews on yelp, was close to the location where I was, and looked like a small family owned place. My kids, myself and my cousin were there to celebrate her birthday. The waitress sat us down and handed us each one napkin. When we asked for more napkins, "napkinS" she handed us one more napkin. Not only did I have children with me who are 100% going to make messes and need napkins, but we also had reason to need a few more napkins. We gave it some time, and when the food arrive, again, we asked for some more napkins. The waitress said she'd already given us more napkins. We acknowledged she had provided us with one additional napkin, but we still required more napkins. This was really uncomfortable and awkward. She finally gave us more napkins, but also asked if there was something wrong, or if we were unhappy with something. We told her no, we just needed more napkins. I mean, I know people are hoarding toilet paper and baby formula from time to time, but I haven't heard anything about napkins. After this everyone had a fine time and enjoyed the meal, which was delicious, as expected. I'm not normally a fan of okra, but there is something magical in how they prepare it here; there is never even a tiny scrap of it left by the time we're done. We float out of the place happy and stuffed. The value proposition here is unreal, at the time of this writing, the Family Combo feeds all three of us for $30 before tax and tip. Service is friendly, but this isn't fast food, it can take 15-20 minutes for the food to arrive once you order. This is expected. The ambiance is the reason this is a 4-star review and not a 5-star.
