Rath Deli is delicious! Unfortunately I live far from this place or I would eat here much more often. Whenever I am in the area for work, this is the place to go. Everything I have tried has been great! Especially the cheesesteak. The prices are on par with what you would expect. They even sell some of the left over bones from the meat as dog treats! I'm not even sure why, but for some reason I put off going in and checking out Rath's Deli in Phillipsburg for a long time now. Everytime I was near by there was somewhere else higher on my list of importance so I'd just keep saying "next time". Today...was next time. I also now feel incredibly dumb for putting this off. Fresh ribeye with cheddar, mushrooms, and onions on a garlic bread roll. Not my typical cheesesteak order but it's their steak and I've been told to try it many times. Well, those people were right. That is a tasty sandwich! All the flavors blend together really nicely. The only critiques I would have are the price (which is the nature of the industry really if you're a butcher shop serving real ribeye) and the exterior of the roll could have been crustier for my personal preference. Order: Spicy Chicken Cutlet Sandwich with House Chips Pros: This is one of those spots where the ambiance really makes it feel unique, and being surrounded by the different local meat and food products they offer highlights how fresh the food is. The sandwich was a thin chicken cutlet, a little crispy, and delicious with the aioli. The house-made chips were a great addition and alternative to regular fries. No question - hands down best deli in the area. Number one for the absolute best hot dog - that snap, insane. Listen, I'm from NYC - I know a thing or two about a good dog! My brother-in-law from Astoria and my family from The Bronx ask me to bring them one or two or a dozen when I go back home. I'm serious though!! Don't skip the macaroni salad or basil pesto!!! Love this butcher. If you're used to supermarket prices for meat, you'll be in shock, but it's night and day quality. I usually stop in once/month for either NY strips or ribeyes. I will also rarely pass up their skirt steak. Very knowledgeable service and super efficient. I'm a fan. Would give 4.5 if I could. read more

The prime rib is amazing. We ordered it prepared for a party and everyone raved about! It was fabulous! The chicken was great as well. This is a second review on Rath's. Because the people are nice there and the quality good I wanted to give it another chance. Unfortunately what I have to report is that while the quality remains good the pricing has gotten ridiculous. Two pounds of fresh ground 85% lean beef chuck was $14 ($6.99/lb). ShopRite down the road from Rath's has similar quality at $5.29/lb. That's just under $2/lb difference. A roast beef on rye sandwich with extra cheese and 1/2lb of potato salad cost $19. NINETEEN DOLLARS! The same ShopRite could have duplicated that for less than half that price. Hell, I could have ordered that at Second Ave Deli in Manhattan and paid less than that. If one wanted to drive a bit further Josie's Deli in Easton Circle will give you the same sandwich, neatly twice the size, on their great old country style rye bread for around $8. Then, to add insult to injury, the polite young woman waiting on me overcharged me significantly, though not as much as I thought she had as the sandwich and potato salad was NINETEEN DOLLARS. Turns out her math mistake added an extra $5, which I caught and thus would have paid if I hadn't called them on it. Like I said though, it appeared an honest mistake. Just noting they can get made so watch. Rath's, much to my regret, remains a place where if you need specialty items not duplicated elsewhere it's worth checking them out but for everyday shopping they've priced themselves way out of the game. There is little point to throwing away money on quality easily duplicated, though given not surpassed, in the same area for much less Update: Matt, the owner politely reached out and expressed his regret over the honest (it was an honest mistake) clerk charging error He also discussed his views on quality vs value which we might get a chance to chat about in person at some point. Rath's is the go to place for all things catering and butcher related. They really take pride in their work and it shows in the finished product. I recently attended a football game that included some pregame tailgating activities and their steak kabobs stole the show! I called up Matt J. a few days before the game to place my order and gave him the freedom to choose what he thought would work best. When I came in he delivered awesome vacuum packed steak kabobs with vegetables and steak seasoning. Every last one got devoured and all guests in attendance asked where I picked them up! Fresh ingredients, knowledgeable staff and attention to detail are what make Rath's an area favorite. Even if you are not too close to Stewartsville it's worth the trip. read more

I also used to go to another butcher in Middlesex county famous for their kielbasa and it's still way less. They seem like a great butcher but I suggest trying to lower some prices. I have lived in the area forever and I've always gotten my meat at the local grocery store. About a year ago my friend took me to Rath's for lunch and I was INSTANTLY HOOKED. It is the only place I go now. Everyone up front is super friendly especially the one girl (I think her name is Kelsey). She helps me every time and is very knowledgeable about the cuts and gets me exactly what I'm looking for. They do everything from sandwiches for lunch to big holiday orders. My parents got a giant roast for Christmas dinner and the whole family was amazed by how delicious it was. I haven't used them for catering yet, but I was at a party where one their 6-foot subs was the main attraction at the food table. Being used to 5 dollar footlongs you would think that a six foot sub would only feed 6 people, but it was so thick and full of flavor that it served 20+ people easily. I haven't gotten a breakfast sandwich there yet but hear that they are just as good as everything else. ONE OF MY FAVORITE parts about them is their premade frozen meals. You just toss them in the oven and they come out perfect. Sure beats the hungry man meals I used to get!. A lot of people are complaining about the price, but I've looked at the price of the some of same cuts at the local grocery stores and they are comparable. You pay for quality, and there is no higher quality. Plus you don't get the customization and personalization that you get at Raths. I would, and I have, recommended this place to all of my friends and family. You will not find better a filet mignon than Rath's! The meat is so tender and the cuts are so thick. The homemade chicken sausage is another item not to miss. Also when you see a special sandwich like a Reuben it could be a frozen st Patrick's day left over corned beef....disappointing...however if you pay full freight their products are top notch! My husband (a Chef) went back for some deli meats. Paid paid $24 for a half pound of turkey, ham and roast beef. If you are going to pay a premium you expect premium quality and service. The guy behind the counter was not trained properly.... ham slice with the grain, roast beef too thick, turkey too thick. But what really pissed him off was he asked for a nice 8 inch roll and when he got home it was so stale that it was inedible!!!!!
