Raúl's Casa Sombrero has been a South Bay hub for many years for those that are wanting a feeling of homemade Mexican dishes and company. First, just like most casual Mexican restaurants you are greeted with house made salsa and chips to snack on while you study the menus for your meal. The salsa is very fresh and the chips are not, thank goodness, over salted. It's a perfect starter! I enjoyed the meal option of four chicken flautas with rice, beans, and perfectly portioned guacamole and sour cream. You are able to make your own choice of meat stuffing, which I love, knowing that the flautas are freshly made. I chose to have chicken and found it to be perfectly fried, not overly seasoned, which some places do. I like that you can actually taste the chicken and not just spice. I also had the horchata to drink, and I loved it! The service is wonderful, with many families flocking to the restaurant for that homemade feel for dinner. The staff has always been kind enough to offer a refill of your drink/soda to go if you wish. Kindness from the staff is a real highlight of Raul's. The ambiance of being at home is a plus for me. There are a few handicap parking spots available in the small adjoined parking lot, with easy wheelchair access through the front door. There is also plenty of parking spots located on the street and in the available parking lot located in the middle of Hawthorne Blvd. There is a television with captions on for those that are HOH, hard of hearing. I recently got to check out Raul's Casa Sombrero Mexican Restaurant for a coworkers retirement lunch. They have pretty good lunch specials for $13.94 that includes your choice of drink. I got the Chicken Taco lunch special and it was a pretty solid meal. The chicken taco had a crisp shell exterior and a fair amount of chicken inside. The chicken taco came with a side of rice and beans. Overall I thought it was not bad for the price. I spotted my coworker's Carnitas lunch special and saw it was a really good plate with a big portion of carnitas. I definitely have that in mind for a future visit. I thought their lunch specials were a good deal and wouldn't mind coming here again when I am in the area. read more

It never fails to exceed expectations and heavily satisfies that craving that you're looking for. My personal favorite that I highly recommend is their hot shredded beef enchiladas layered with a bed of sour cream with fresh rice and beans on the side. I went with my family and service dog for breakfast. The lady who was gonna serve us stated that our dog was not allowed at the restaurant. I advised her that he is a service dog and he has papers. She asked me to see the papers and I advised her that it was against the law to ask to see the papers. She said, in front of my family, that she was scared of dogs. I told her that she was breaking the law based on her issues with dogs. I understand that not everyone needs to like dogs but my dog is a licensed service animal. Raul's is a tradition for my husband and I, we've been eating here for many years. It's a very low-key place to chill, eat great tacos, and have a few beers or Margaritas! The post-COVID-19 prices are comparable to other places like it, a bit steep but one dish is enough for two people, really. The rice and beans are perfecto, the Taco Salad is plentiful and just yummy! My husband ate his ground beef taco before I could snap a picture of it, that's how good it WAS, sorry, next time I will get it! If I could give this place 4.5 out of 5 stars I would. The only reason it's not 5 star is due to no air conditioning in the restaurant. I found this place based on yelp reviews and once again, they got it right! This place is really good!! In the South Bay there are tons of Mexican spots to choose from but what sets this place apart is, the food taste authentic and the portions are a good size and as a added plus, the food is flavorful and not greasy. We tried the combo plates with cheese enchiladas, shredded beef enchiladas, carne asada taco and ground beef taco with rice and beans and it was all delicious. Not a single complaint. The complimentary chips n salsa were freshly made and the chunky salsa was just a tad hot but not overpowering. Seems silly to add but they offer real brewed iced tea (not soda machine tea like many places) and crushed ice for drinks. The service was wonderful as well. Attentive and friendly staff and very accommodating. As it was our first time there, the waitress was very patient and went thru all our option choices for our tacos n enchiladas. The restaurant is a cute clean little spot right on Hawthorne. If you didn't know it was there, you could miss it, if your just driving by. But, it's worth looking for and stopping. I love this place!! It's small restaurant with its own private parking lot. Inside is very clean and cozy! You're instantly greeted and chips and salsa served while you pick from the menu. Service is always amazing! We came in with a large group of people. No mistakes were made. We all got separate billed, and paid in back at the cash register. The food was hot and perfect. The waiter was so patient. We had a picky eater that didn't want lime for her tea so they sent it back. The waiter took in stride. I was just really impressed that with our large party the one waiter kept up with our orders and made sure our drinks were always filled. It's a pretty good spot for Menudo! If it's Saturday I always make sure to get some Menudo. It's my go to meal and it never disappoints. The portion sizes are pretty big and they're pretty generous with all the ingredients. Whenever I call they're always very helpful and informative. I tend to always get the same thing but whenever I vary from my order they're pretty cool about it. The service is spot on and the Menudo is bomb! Definitely worth checking out. We used to go to the Rauls on Inglewood in Hawthorne years ago and food and staff were great. We decided to try the Rauls on Hawthorne and Rosecrans thinking it was the same owners (family) and it was absolutely awful. First off, they are not open until 9 pm. as stated in Yelp. We got there around 6:15 p.m. and they were locking the door close to 7:00 p.m. We found out they close at 7:00 p.m. from staff. I ordered a hamburger tostada and when delivered to the table there was a big brown glob of something on top of the tostada. It didn't even look like hamburger. (I wouldn't even feed it to my dogs.) Needless to say, I did not eat the brown stuff. I ate the lettuce and what little of refried beans was on the soggy tortilla below. I ended up ordering more refried beans to eat with the lettuce. Someone else in our party ordered the flan and the top of the flan looked dark purple. It did not look like flan from other restaurants. He ate it but said it wasn't that good. We never plan on returning to THIS Rauls Restaurant. I'm not sure if the Raul's restaurant changed hands or what. I feel sorry for the past Raul owners who took pride in their food. read more

The rice was just okay, but next time, I'll probably get the usual rice and beans. The food here was pretty good. The fajita burrito my friend ordered was bigger than his forearm. The carne asada taco salad was a good size and the flaky bowl it comes in was super deep fried. It was like eating a buttery croissant. The parking area is semi-medium. Not small, but not medium. We got there early so there was spaces for us to park in... but there is street parking as well. I almost didn't select Raul's for my Saturday night Mexican food craving last night. There were only 7 reviews total for 2017. One of these was seriously deranged so let's say there were only 6 actual reviews. That's not a lot of recent feedback for a restaurant on Yelp. However, out of the 6 it was mostly positive so off we went. Raul's is in a small "U" shaped center. I don't remember any of the other businesses being open which made parking easy. But there weren't many other cars there when we pulled up which set off the danger signs in our heads. And then there was only one other couple when we walked in. This was another not good sign. We were greeted in less than a minute and told we could sit anywhere. It was a little warm in Raul's. I mean this in a good way. It smelled good. I felt comfortable. It was clean. The kind of clean that means a business owner takes pride in their establishment. We liked that a lot. It quickly became apparent that the other couple were regulars. We liked that too. We were brought menus and our drink orders were taken. One water and one Horchata. And then the fun began. We always take too long to order (I'm sure I've mentioned this before). Our server was very patient and when we were finally ready very politely corrected our combo order mistakes. I mention this only because our server's level of professionalism was extreme compared to any other restaurant I've been to in recent memory. To me this means she cares. Now I'm feeling very comfortable. We ordered a two cheese enchilada combo and a chile relleno (beef) taco combo. And as an appetizer we ordered a cheese quesadilla (well, mostly I wanted to see what a $10.95 cheese quesadilla looked like). Ok, a $10.95 quesadilla is HUGE. Accompanied by generous scoops of sour cream and guacamole this is a meal. The sour cream was not "cheap" sour cream and the guacamole is worth a drive. Actually the guacamole is a little bit of a cross between guacamole and avocado dip. Did I detect a tad of cream cheese mixed in? Whatever it was it was a perfect compliment to the quesadilla and the leftover was great with chips. Oh, this might be a good time to mention about the salsa. As other Yelpers noted it is SPICY! But very good. It was a little above my spicy threshold but it didn't stop me from setting my mouth on fire either (good thing I ordered the Horchata to put it out). My cheese enchiladas were by far the best I've had in Los Angeles. This was a major discovery because it will save me a drive to El Indio in San Diego from time to time. El Indio is still the best. Raul's have a slightly milder sauce but are still packed with cheese which is after all what we order cheese enchiladas for in the first place. Why is it so hard to to find quality cheese enchiladas in a city of over 13 million people? Am I the only one who finds cheese enchiladas an art form? Apparently. The rice and beans served with both dinners was exceptional. Another Yelper mentioned that the refried beans were the best they had ever had. That's truly a subjective statement and while I personally can't agree I can understand why someone might say that:) The rice was nice and fluffy and well seasoned. The chile relleno was very good (I'm assuming it was better than that because I was not offered a bite) and the asada crunchy taco was very well prepared with the only issue being that the asada was a little bland. While there was a certain spiciness to it there was a significant lack of flavor. That being said, it was still tender and there was plenty of it. In fact the taco was much larger than what I see in other Mexican restaurants. Overall Raul's is a quality local Mexican joint, no doubt. It's a little expensive but not needlessly so. Here's an example: My Horchata was $3.45. But when we were getting ready to leave and I wanted a little more I was asked if I wanted a togo cup! And the tumbler it came in was very nice sized. On top of that it tasted like it was made there and not from a dispenser. Now that's value. Our meal came to $48 with a generous tip. And we learned the hard way that we really didn't need the quesadilla so take over $12 off of that. I really didn't need the Horchata either (but it sure was good). Check out Raul's. It really deserves more than 6 reviews in 2018. read more
