The moment we stepped into the M 16 Room, we took on the personas of British agents. It was quite exciting! There were only 3 in our group and the max is usually 7 people. It was quite daunting to take on this challenge as we found out the success rate was a paltry 32%. So we weren't expecting to breakout in time... However, because we worked methodically and in synchrony, despite missing our key player, Janice, we met success! Broke out with 10+ minutes left, thanks to our cunning and astute team! A friend of my wife's told her about this place and said it was a great place to challenge ones critical thinking skills while having a blast..was that ever an understatement! This site is tucked in the rear of a strip mall..innocuous and easily overlooked. They are constantly changing the challenges and the skills needed vary in difficulty. We elected to try the easiest one..Poe's Chamber.. since it was our first time trying this type of game...but won't be the last! While I would love to tell you all the challenges you will face within the room that would spoil all the fun so I will only say that you have 60 minutes to solve the various clues and find all the keys to lead you to "the Raven". Unfortunately my group was a little over a minute from solving the last clue..Aww shucks! I think you will find that you will be challenged mentally beyond what you would ever expect..but you will leave feeling great and most likely addicted. This place is great! We came for a work teambuilder and I have to say, I was looking forward to it about as much as doing trust falls with your coworkers. I had a blast! The puzzles were challenging but not impossible. The workers are great about giving hints to keep the frustration levels low. They are also fantastic about explaining the gamw beforehand. First of all the address is wrong. It's 7025 and you get to it from the back side (there is parking in back). We did the Plato Cave and absolutely loved it. This room you start in absolute darkness and handcuffed to a table. The goal is to escape in 60 minutes. This is a more challenging course and only allows 4 players - bring friends and have a blast. I've done an escape room and a scavenger hunt with work at Ravenchase. Both were awesome. The escape room was at their location off three chopt. We did the Matrix room and it was tough. We did not make it out, but we had a blast none the less. We did a scavenger hunt through them at the VMFA. It was awesome, finding clues throughout the museum. Most clues were difficult but doable. One in particular was tough, but they're able to give you clues and dock you some points. Great time all around. read more

My family and I have done several escape rooms here and every time has been a fantastic experience. Each room has been interesting and challenging. Our most recent attempt was for the Lost Jewel of the James. It had a very Goonies-like feel to it, which we loved. The level of detail was impressive and really made us feel like we were on a pirate ship. The fact that each room we've done has been so convincingly different is a testament of the talent and dedication of the employees here. The staff has always been friendly and fun, with helpful (but not TOO helpful) hints that allow you to keep going without feeling too frustrated. Several of us have also done escape rooms run by other companies, but Ravenchase's are always the best. We've also visited the Herndon location and recommend both to anyone looking for a fun, unique activity with their friends, family, or coworkers. read more

A blend of the Davinci Code, Amazing Race, and The Goonies. Get your packet, solve the clues, obtain your prize. Ready, set, go! I set up a teambuilder for my department with Ravenchase in October. Everyone raved about it afterwards. We had 6 teams of 5 and picked the Museum District/Fan challenge. The clues were solvable, but not elementary. You also don't need to bring your smartphone. It won't help. If you are the one coordinating the event, have them set up your adventure to end close to a bar. You will want to talk about the challenge, clues, and even characters along the way. Every April, Richmond gears up for the Greater Richmond Region Adventure, a DaVinci-code-style race where local teams scour the city and surrounding areas for clues hidden at historic sites, monuments, museums, and the like. This local fave is part of Tourism Week and is co-sponsored by the Richmond CVB, but the cool event is produced by Ravenchase. Went on 2/13/16 with my family and wife (5 people) and were joined by 2 couples to complete our adventure. We did the crypt room and had a blast! Initially I was afraid that my mom wouldn't like it but it turned out to be fun for everyone. I don't want to give too much away but the staff were friendly and helpful with their 3 hints and I would definitely go back if I'm in town. Tip: register as a large group (10) so that you know everyone. That or introduce yourselves before you walk into your adventure because otherwise you'll have no time. And yes, get there early because they have not only free beer but ice cream as well. read more

Much about this escape room company stands out above others, here are just a few reasons why: The puzzle solving techniques required in these rooms are unlike any other I have experienced in other escape adventures. Whereas most rooms require obtaining a collection of objects, cracking codes, finding keys, Ravenchase room designers think outside the box for ways to solve their puzzles (Ravenchase writers: I hope that was vague enough as to not be considered a "spoiler"). The stories are intriguing and the room design itself is dynamic (yes, the environment literally changes as you solve the room). The Unicorns vs. Vampires puzzle room (I did the unicorns' room) was extremely detailed in its environment including a hand-crafted TREE!! SOMEBODY(ies) at Ravenchase really takes their crafting quite seriously! The vibe of the Vanity puzzle room got more perilous and menacing as you advanced through the puzzles. My skin began to crawl as I got closer to solving the mystery (which was a first for me in a mystery-themed escape story) Speaking of the aforementioned vibe, the only (mild, very mild) complaint I have is that the lighting in the rooms are quite low. The employees explained this was for "mood" and "atmosphere" and that flashlights are provided in essential parts of the puzzle. Trust the process, they were absolutely correct about this. The puzzle masters were very accommodating and attentive, making sure to give only the most relevant clues. They also give gentle reminders if something is deliberately "locked" or "unlocked" or not even relevant (eg: furniture, fixtures, ornamentation) so you don't run the risk of forcing or breaking something. If you find yourself in need of a clue, you better bust out your best dance moves, they wont drop a hint for just any stumped puzzler. read more

The puzzle can be quite challenging but the staff checks in and helps along the way if needed. We had 4 people on our team but I suggest the max of 8! More eyes and brains working together! Each time there have been numerous puzzles, riddles, and clues to find and solve. Each time it has been so unique. I've yet to have where one room was too similar to others. 11 friends and I went to try to new Super Villian themed room at Escape Room RVA and had an amazing time. The room was challenging, but built in a way where there was plenty for everyone to be working on at any given moment. It challenged us organizationally as well as having some really well developed puzzles that were not like anything I had ever seen before. We came really close to completing the room, but even though we didn't escape it still felt like an amazing experience for a very affordable price. We are absolutely coming back and are excited that they cycle the rooms every few months so that we will always have a reason to return. I was concerned it was going to be something that would only be good for some sort of corporate team-building, but it was great fun for us as just a group of friends, though it would certainly be the best employer sponsored workshop spaces as you are learning so much about how to communicate and organize information between everyone, but in a way that isn't forced but is actually just a lot of fun. I'm really impressed with the amount of work that was put into the room and how intensely friendly the staff was. They absolutely had it all put together and are running things very smoothly to insure you have a great experience without a lot of undue time spent waiting or doing anything other than what you came to do. Did the Plato's Cave room which was cool because I had never done a room in the dark before. Was really cool other than one prop in the room they hadn't adequately reset. Made it a little frustrating, but we still managed to escape with a few minutes to spare. Definitely still worth doing if you're in the area. read more

This is my third escape game and the third venue I've tried my hand at escaping from. I feel like this is a solid 3 star escape room. Their reviews, however, are overwhelmingly positive due to a rewards program for 4-5 star reviews. A few notes: 1) we were expecting no more than 6-8 people in our group. Instead, my party of three was lumped in with a party of eight or nine others. Due to the divided nature of the room, this large group size made any coordination in the room nearly impossible and our escape ended up being mostly luck. 2) the room seemed scattered, with little logical progression from puzzle to puzzle. This may have something to do with the large group size. That being said, most puzzles were intriguing and a good level of difficulty. 3) the intro was not as well done as I've seen in the past. It was not immersive. 4) the speaker system was not great. It was difficult to understand the observer over the speaker. 5) one key accidentally unlocked two locks. This led us to escape the room in 38 minutes without completing several of the puzzles. 6) we didn't qualify for the record for this room because we asked for a hint (it wasn't made clear prior to entry that this would dq us) and because one key unlocked two locks and we therefore didn't complete all puzzles. 7) As we walked out of the room, an employee entered through another door and began cleaning up behind us immediately. The whole experience seemed somewhat rushed, with us immediately being ushered to the exit after winning. This review is not meant to be negative. Overall, I had a good time. I would not oppose coming back, but I might try to see what other escape rooms in Richmond have to offer first. read more

We had three teams as an extended family for a scavenger hunt along the canal. Kids and seniors all were able to identify clues. Our host Tina was gracious yet appropriately mysterious with her instructions, clues, and encouragement. Several decoy/participant actors also fooled a number of teams. As a visitor to the area I especially liked the local history that was woven into our hunt. Ravenchase made the most of the historical details in Richmond as well as several local establishments. The tools we used and picked up were also unique and fun. All in all it was a fun afternoon of teamwork, friendly competition, creative problem solving, and getting to know Richmond. I would do it again with the faith that Ravenchase is clever enough to think of new challenges. I highly recommend this activity and company! read more

Fantastic experience here! First off, make sure you drive around to the back of the shopping complex to get to the entrance. Once inside, we did the Crypt and this escape room was definitely more challenging and exciting than the one I have been to in the DC area. Super fun! A great alternative to your typical outing of bowling, eating, etc. While our group didn't "escape" (womp womp) we still had a really good time! My group and I had a fantastic time at Ravenchase adventures. Prior to arriving here, I really didn't know what to expect but I was thrilled with what we discovered. As soon as we got there, the Ravenchase team greeted us with the perfect mixture of a warm, welcoming atmosphere and kind of the mysterious "we're going to harvest your organs" kind of vibe (mind you, that's a direct quote). The facility was clean, and nicely decorated. Plus, when you arrive you are offered a complimentary soda, water, beer, or icecream bar of choice. Additionally, I appreciated the various shout outs to our dear poet friend Poe, and I swear in the bathroom I started hearing a heartbeat from beneath the floorboards... Our team chose to do the new Super Villain Room. It was organized into four sections based of The Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, and Riddler. We actually ended up losing (just barely) but it was still a great time regardless. For new players, I'd HIGHLY recommend bringing some paper pads with pens and if you're really extreme have a couple extra timers to keep people focused under the pressure of the clock. I'd also recommend being really careful to pull on any locks thoroughly when testing codes. There were a couple times we had the right answer but apparently lacked basic lock-opening skills (i.e. you push up then down rather than yanking it-- who knew?). I'd highly recommend this to new adventurers. It was a great time, and I definitely plan on going again in the future. read more

We do group outings every quarter at work and had our outing here in December of last year, loved it so much we did it again at the beginning of April for our very next outing. I did Ravenchase's 2011 New Year's Eve Race for Father Time in Richmond with a team of 4 - we had a great time! They provided clues, a map, and a flashlight then sent us on our way for a foot race around downtown. We thought we'd take it easy through the race but our competitive spirit kicked in right away. The clues were a fun challenge (don't read into them too much!) and there are bonus clues for extra points. One of the clues led us to a party location with food and several drink tickets per person. The race is meant to take 2 hours and was well worth the $50 we paid to participate. We did not solve all of the puzzles but have strategies for next time! I did the Mind Trap room with 4 other friends on Sunday, and we escaped with just a few seconds left. It was a great experience, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone! We had to put everyone's heads together to come up with solutions, and even though we weren't there for team-building, it really helped us come together as a group to work to escape. The people working there were very friendly. Also, the rooms were very detailed, and I honestly forgot I was in a game for a little bit! I hope to come back as soon as possible! read more
