I've been to many of the greater Richmond escape room establishments and Escape Old Towne is…read morecertainly among the best! I've done their Area 51 room once and 80s Prom room twice (the first time was to beta test it before it officially opened - they took our feedback into account and the room was much better the second time). The highlight is certainly the amount of detail they put into designing the rooms: Area 51 in particular is definitely one of the best looking I've ever done! Without spoiling anything, most of the puzzles are top notch (the Rubik's cube in the 80s prom room is among my favorite escape room puzzles ever). Staff is very friendly and accommodating. Would recommend Escape Old Towne to newcomers looking to get into escape rooms for the first time and avid escape room hobbyists alike! Not the worst area, but downtown Petersburg can be a bit dodgy at night, so keep that in mind. Be prepared for street parking as well. Typically not a busy area, so I've never had any trouble finding a spot nearby.

He explained everything to us, answered more questions than a person should have and laughed with during tge entire time. The hubby and I failed to "Escape" and had to be rescued. It was the best way to spend part of my 34th Anniversary. This is a MUST visit place!

Great time escaping from the Elephant Shujaa room!! It was very realistic and definitely safari hot…read more in there! We especially liked the background music and props were very cool !! You have to be very observant and work in coordination with your team, otherwise you won't make it out in time! The owner was very friendly and the clues interesting! You must work as a team and systematically work through the clues. Fresh eyes are a must, so rotate through your team! You get three hints if needed. A portion of the proceeds go toward elephant preservation! All in all, it was a fantastic experience!! So. Ring your friends and coworkers!!!

We're a bunch of escape room fanatics. :) We did the elephant shujaa room where the objective is to hunt down the poachers. You enter a tent to search for clues to hunt down the location of the poachers to capture them. I really did feel like I was in Africa with the heat (haha). Points for immersion :) We were provided with a walkie-talkie and 3 hints if needed. Sleuthing around the tent required being very observant, attention to detail and team work. The clues made sense and were not convoluted. I wouldn't recommend the max of 8 people. It can get tight in there. Maybe 2-5people. We had a good time despite the heat. We broke out with 11min and 29 seconds to spare with a group of 3. If you're in town, check this place out! I hail from VB so the next time I do come it will be if I'm in the area for other things.

If there was ever one escape room I wish I could do again for the first time it would be that one. The puzzles were fun and imaginative and honestly kinda scary and thrilling. We did another one about treasure after that one because we loved it so much and none of us enjoyed this one quite as much. The team was very helpful in guiding us during the times we were stuck. Really fun place!

Tip for finding it: the business park it's in has lots of buildings that look alike. The sign they put out front is quite small. We were the only ones there besides our host, Maya. She was so friendly & welcoming, such a pleasure to meet her. We got started right away in Blackbeard's Cabin, said to be the hardest room. Well, I'll tell you it IS tough! We found lots (and lots and lots) of clues but at the halfway mark had to start asking for hints. What to do when you've found 20 or 30 bits that lead to a solution, but can't figure out how to assemble them? Why, talk like a pirate, of course. With ample hints, we actually solved it with 8 minutes to spare. Many laughs and head scratches, "hmmm"s and "Oh wait, wait!" but in the end we triumphed. DGD the Younger and I don't like jump scares, so I don't know that we would ever try the Chesapeake Bay Butcher room, but I would love to try Cyberpunkd the next time we come to Williamsburg.

It's located in the mall so plenty of parking. The staff helping with set up and intros were nice an made things easy. For this room we started handcuffed so it took a little longer than normal to get set up. No spoilers obviously but these rooms were very intricate. We needed a lot of nudges and some extra help but we luckily got out. Lots of interesting puzzles and locks here. We were very big fans and would love to try the rest of the rooms!

My husband and I did the Dr. Ensaine and the Bank Heist escape rooms. We did Dr. Ensaine first, which is level medium for difficulty. This one we thought was harder, especially since some of the writing on the objects was pretty worn down so it was hard to read it. I also wasn't sure how you were supposed to connect a couple things without a hint or nudge. This was has a creepy undertone to it but nothing pops out or no one comes out at you, which I was waiting for so that also through me off. The location of this escape room is also in the middle of the others so you could hear other people well which was distracting. We were able to finish even though our 60 mins was up and we finished 3 mins over. Princess was our game host for this one. We came back the next day to do the Bank Heist which was rated 2nd hardest escape room they had. My husband and I loved this one a lot more and we actually made it out with 8 min 47 sec left to spare! This one was more up our alley I think with the types of puzzles and def wasn't scary at all. They used all different types of challenges that we hadn't seen before in other escape rooms. We definitely loved the Bank Heist more, but both were good overall! We had a couple different game hosts here. For 2 people it was $37.50 per person, for 3 or more it's $32 per person. Each room is private so you don't have to share with strangers. You get 3 hints per room but unlimited nudges. It was a lot of fun!
