This was really fun!!!!! I can not imagine the words to use, so forgive me for my mundane attempt. We started by descending a deep hole and found ourselves bigger and smaller at the same time. My 11 yr old and I did the chocolate factory. This was a good level for 2 ppl and a child. (Although a couple more ppl might have helped!) The room keeps evolving with great decor and imagination. Supportive staff. The downside was there were a couple clues that need refreshing. In one case the color was faint and worn away. In another the pictures were too dark making it hard to see. Tough if you're in the reading glasses demographic. We still had fun but not up to the level of others we've done. read more

I love doing escape rooms at different locations to see how each one operates and experience the differences. We did the Wonka themed room a little while back. The room/location is "low tech" compared to others and looks... more hand done than others I've played. Not a bad thing but would have lowered the rating. What saved rating was the expansiveness of the room. I don't want to give away details but the whole room felt like it kept opening doors to more areas. I love that feeling. Sorta more bang for your buck. All in all, we'd definitely go back. read more

We booked the Alice in Wonderland room to celebrate my husband's birthday and father's day. Our friends and us went here for the first time and were a little nervous. Myself and one friend had only done an escape room one other time with the rest never having done one. The guy running the room was very down to earth and calmed our nerves. He explained the rules and safety guidelines very well. When we were in the room, it was so fun and some of the puzzles were really out of the box. The guy would chime in and give hints that would let you know, "hey you're wrong" without giving too much away. It had some physical aspects in this room, but nothing too bad, mostly crawling. I'm very happy with our experience and would definitely come back. Not to mention the prices were very reasonable. read more

This owner is a criminal! We had an escape room booked (you must pre-pay to book a room). When we showed up the owner claimed their power was out and the room would not work. Despite this, he refused to give us a refund. He was EXTREMELY rude, including swearing at us (multiple f-bombs) and refused to give us our money back for a service he could not deliver. My family and I loved doing an escape room and we typically do them at Christmas in Colorado but they were all closed at that time due to Covid. I wanted us to do one while they were all in town visiting. We booked the Alice room. The wonderful staff member walked us through the room and that it would have no traditional locks or keys. She explained we could pick our level of difficulty as well. We chose the medium level of difficulty. The room was so much fun! Not to give too much away, but there were a lot of different rooms within the room that opened up when we solved different puzzles. After we finished, the staff member stated that she had bumped us up to the difficult level as she saw us progressing. I really liked that the room had adjustable difficulty and that she could change it based on how we were doing. We had so much fun and I will definitely be back! read more

Our family did Clairvoyants Conundrum over Thanksgiving weekend. We have done every escape room at this location and 79 rooms in total. This room was a total disaster. We never got a backstory about the room or an introduction. Almost every single puzzle didn't work. Things opened that shouldn't have, and the game master struggled to help us from there. The instructions for puzzles didn't make sense. There was no timer in the room, and we weren't given any warnings about our time. And then on top of everything, the room was too small for 4 people. read more

This was my second escape room. While I loved the experience in the first one (in the DC area), I didn't realize how much could be done with the medium, and River City Escape Room has really pushed the envelope. We went for the The Great Art Caper, but before we went in the owner took us for a tour of the room, letting us quickly peek into the speakeasy (it looks like a real speakeasy!) and into the Sherlock Holmes room, which was beautiful. One of the owners is a gaming/puzzle/tech guy and the other is an interior decorator - so the combination makes for great ambience as you tackle surprisingly subtle clues to get out. The Great Art Caper has an 18% success rate, and we were pretty sure we wouldn't be part of that percentage (only two of the five of us had ever done 1 before!). We ended up using our three hints, and got a bonus hint at the end when someone was doing addition out loud instead of multiplication... so in the end the timer ran out above the door, but we had punched in the code before the staff's timer went off. So, they counted it as solved - I guess we slipped out the door as the guards walked in? Either way - the density of this puzzle was impressive - nothing impossible, but just so many different parts and surprising uses of items in the room. read more

We've done a bunch of escape rooms around the country, and this was definitely one of our favorites! We did the Alice-in-Wonderland room, and from the moment we met our gamemaster (whose enthusiasm was infectious), the whole experience was great! The room was well-designed. Tricky without being impossible. We had to work as a team and think out the puzzles. There was a nice non-linearity to the game that meant that our group wasn't all huddled around each puzzle together, but instead got to work on multiple puzzles at the same time. Nice job! We're looking forward to trying the other rooms out next time we're in Richmond! read more

My family and I did the "Alice in Wonderland" room at the "Hard" level. We were able to complete the room with 3 hints from the facilitator (Rachel) in just under 52 minutes. I won't give away any of the secrets, but I will say that the room was well designed, the puzzles were challenging to figure out (but not impossible), and room consistently themed. If you do this room, be prepared to have to crawl in a couple of spots (nothing confining or scary). The only hint I'll give is that this was the first escape room I've encountered that incorporates the use of an iPad for providing clues; the iPad is triggered by some images and objects within the room. Very well designed and thought out. Our host Rachel was super nice and helpful. She was one of the designers of the Alice room; clearly she loves and is passionate about her job. We plan to try out "Warehouse 29" next. read more

Escape rooms are our hobby and we've done 100+ of them at this point. River City is one of the best places we've ever visited. Rachel and Dennis were some of the best (perhaps *the* best) staff and GMs we've ever had the pleasure of working with and I can promise you we'll return to River City when we're back in the area. We did three rooms: Alice in Wonderland, Innocent, and Sherlock Holmes Alice: What a wonderful concept! The room has no locks! No looking for keys or putting words into combo locks, it's all about the Alice's experiences in Wonderland. It was a little hard on me, being a bigger guy and there being a good bit of crawling, but this is in my top 5 of favorite rooms ever. Innocent: It's really rare that a room surprises us with the way it progresses - we've gotten pretty good at spotting hidden doors, etc. Not once, but TWICE this room surprised us. It's a hard room with a lot to do, so it kept us busy and on our toes the entire time. Sherlock: A visually beautiful room, but we never got the Sherlock vibe. Still, we had a great time with the room and the experience. Lots of interactivity and hands-on puzzles. At most any other establishment, this would be a flagship room, but at River City it was outshined by Innocent and Alice. read more

These rooms are top notch! They're themed escape rooms and that's all I'm going to say about them. My husband took us here for a date night and we did the Speakeasy room. Couple weeks later, family came to visit and we took our siblings and cousin here to do one room and we booked another room after we finished because we loved it so much! We did Sherlock and the prison rooms. Difficulty level is there and they are just so clever. We can't wait for new rooms to come out so we can to back! What a wonderful experience for this first timer. I went with three 10 year olds for my daughter's birthday and it couldn't have been more fun! We did Alice in Wonderland. It was an incredible challenge that was so fun to try to figure out. Such clever and creative clues. Although I am ashamed my mental acuity was outdone on several occasions by these 10 year olds! We are thankful for the hints they offer. What a wonderful, imaginative environment they have created. The staff was so friendly, helpful and really good with the kids. I really can't put in to words how amazing our experience was. My girlfriend and I chose to celebrate Valentine's Day tonight and she surprised me by bringing me here. For one the customer service is AMAZING and the girl that was there at the time was so awesome and quirky and fun! We chose to do the speakeasy room and though we didn't escape on our own it was SO fun! They had space for us to come back for another room about an hour and a half later and joined a group of complete strangers and still had a blast! We even got to meet the owner and wow he's a really nice guy! We will be back and telling everyone about this place! read more

We booked a room inadvertantly for the wrong day and showed up to a closed building. It would be nice if maybe the website had a note about how early before a room you can book. The person we reached out to was understanding and said they would void the transaction since we weren't going to be able to make the room we booked for the wrong day. The charge posted so we called to check in on the situation. We explained the situation (admittedly we were slightly frustrated but no voices were raised) and were told a manager would call us. The manager called and reprimanded us for "yelling" at the person who told us a manager would be in touch and she was "in tears". That was rude and uncalled for as we didn't yell. I understand supporting your workers but there was absolutely no reason for her to be in tears as there was no yelling and nothing bad was said. We really hoped to try this place but will not after this whole ordeal. read more

Y'all! This place is great! My only complaint is that some of the clues are triggered by the creators and if they're not glued to the screen watching you or there are multiple rooms in action you may actually do something correctly and never know. For example (and for hardcore escapees I'm giving NOTHING away) you may need to jump 3 times, and if they're not looking the the event that should have triggered won't happen. My warning is that these games are tough! Primarily for the above reason I'm sure because I've only ever participated in progressive games where the hints lead you progressively (ha) through the room. These hints can break into 5 or 6 separate tasks - great for large groups! - which for 2 can make your task a little more difficult. Of the 8 rooms I've now done, I'll happily say speakeasy is my #2 favorite! Though I've heard nothing but rave reviews of Sherlock (they're retiring the 3rd). read more

We had a group of 5 and were partnered with another family of 5. We enjoyed the Sherlock themed challenge. Younger players had some contributions and then some of the puzzles were a little more advanced. Our facilitator was fun and helpful, really paying attention to our game and would prompt with, remember when you said...so we didn't feel so bad for asking for a clue...lovely job. Our team had 3 Parents, 3 college students, 2 recent grads and 2 -12 year olds. We had all done one room prior, even the kids. Recommended. read more

Well i have to change my review about river city escape rooms, thanks to Rachael the manager of river city escape. The previous experience was a bust, the person was very rude and unprofessional. This was not the managers fault as she was not there when this happened. We were invited back to try another room ( innocent the hardest room in richmond ) and i must say it was VERY challenging, but the experience was 100 percent better than before. We managed to escape ( just barely) , roughly 1 minute left, but that still counts as a win!!. Multiple rooms, lots of thinking, some pretty tough clues ,and Rachel was GREAT!! She is the perfect person to manage this business, bubbly, energetic, enthusastic. She makes you feel excited to be there. Can't wait to try another room. read more

We had a really great time when we did the "speakeasy" escape room, but I was disappointed in a few things. First, the beginning intro was kinda lame and I think I would've liked an actual person talking instead of a video. Next, some of the puzzles were not very intuitive and we had to get a bunch of help, this might've been our fault for being dim and there was only two of us, but I don't know. Lastly, the biggest letdown was the ending. According to the storyline, we had an hour before the police arrived. We failed, and instead of any sirens/lights going off or any thematics, we just had the guy come and tell us we ran out of time. They really could've had fun with the end but chose not to. Overall, we had a fun time and I'm excited to see what their new Alice in wonderland room will be like once it's done. Hopefully it's more of a beginner level room! read more

I have done a few escape rooms around richmond but the two I did here were the most fun. So far I did the speakeasy and the sherlock Holmes room. both were spectacularly decorated and was sufficiently challenging. some of the clues are just brilliantly put together and add various surprising elements to escaping. beyond that the owner was so friendly. you can tell that he loves what he is doing and puts a lot of effort into making it the best escape room around. he talked to us about how others approached the room as well as showed us the control room with some of the nifty gadgets that he uses to make sure the puzzles are done correctly. overall great experience... highly recommend and will definitely be coming back! read more

The staff was extremely unhelpful, there was a young man who didn't seem like he wanted to be there, a young woman who gave off a very snoody attitude, and wasn't very helpful with the hints (pressed the help button 5+ times w/o help at one point) multiple parts of the room were broken. And overall the room wasnt explained well, this being my first time it kind of discourages me from trying another. Lastly the woman said she turned the air on in the room but everyone commented on how hot it was in the room. I would not recommend this to anyone honestly, waste of $100. read more
