My experience with Andy: I had to change my locks last May in the middle of the night after a pretty horrible break up. I called another locksmith company (Maple Leaf) who came and changed my locks. A few months later, I found myself short one housekey. Not sure where it went, I decided it would be in my best interest to change the locks again. The day after researching locksmiths, I received a call from the guy at Maple Leaf, asking about my lock plate, or something along those lines, because my neighbor wanted one like it. While I had planned on going back to him, this phone call really weirded me out because he never worked on my lock plate and none of my neighbors should know about it because they haven't been to my apartment (that I know of). I called Andy at Advantage Locksmith. He showed up quickly, changed my lock, made my keys and gave me some tips to better secure my home. I asked him if he knew the guy at Maple Leaf. He said yes and I told him what happened. He was really sweet and called the other locksmith to figure out exactly what was going on. When the other locksmith told Andy he hadn't called me, Andy verified the number from my phone to make sure it was the other locksmith (Bjorn) when all of a sudden he remembered calling me and had just gotten the customers confused. It was very kind and I could tell that his concern for me and my discomfort was genuine. I also appreciate that Andy explained he won't have my receipts after the end of the fiscal quarter, so he would have no way to contact me, as they go to his accountant. We reached out to him because we had a stuck double door and three tricky, full frame double door locks that needed to be rekeyed (and we didn't have the key for them, either). We'd had another locksmith out to work on them a few years ago and he gave up - said they were really difficult to work on and that we should replace the hardware instead (!!). David and I talked about the doors and the rekeying; I sent some photos; he said "oh, that shouldn't be a problem" and he was able to rekey all three of them - much to our delight! And not only that, but he did it quickly and cleanly. And he unstuck the door, and he fixed another issue where the full-frame lock was coming off the door - so, above and beyond work. While he was here, we talked about replacing some locks in the house with smart locks, and he made some recommendations. On the way out he noted that our handset on the front door had broken (he was correct). He mentioned that Baldwin - the manufacturer - had a lifetime warranty and so I should be able to get it replaced for free. And once again, he was completely right. I ordered the locks and the warranty replacement for the handset. He came out again and installed the locks, rekeyed them to match the house, and replaced the handset. He was very transparent about cost and pricing; he probably doesn't charge enough for his excellent work (it was less than the other locksmith who couldn't actually do the job!). I was charged over $500 to replace a commercial grade locking doorknob. Fair enough. At that point I should have insisted on an estimate. When I questioned the amount I was told the doorknob alone cost $200. Similar doorknobs range online from $37-$72. Of the $500 I did authorize $25 to make my new key match another key. I didn't get an itemized receipt. When I asked how much each thing cost he would punch in numbers on his phone and hold it up. This whole incident left me suspicious.
