Just as others have said, Howard came to our house the day after our key was stolen to efficiently and affordably replace our front door lock. I appreciated very much that he was able to come out so quickly. Howard also inspected the locks on the other exterior doors, and told me that none really needed replacement. It's nice to have someone be honest about what really needs to be done. On top of all that, Howard even asked if it was OK to use WD40 around our birds! I don't often leave reviews but I HAD to in this case! I just moved into a new building and unfortunately the key to my front door got stuck in the lock. After hours of twisting, turning, and pulling, I finally called Howard. Over the phone, he was able to not only help me free the key within minutes, but he also gave me a detailed explanation of why this had happened, as well as recommended next steps to share with my landlord. I thought it was incredibly generous of Howard to help me out even though I didn't have an appointment. What a great guy! The owner, Howard, just helped me over the phone, advising me so well that he did not even have to pay me a visit. In this cold weather, my external keypad for my detached garage door opener suddenly stopped working this morning. My usual fix is to simply replace the little battery in the keypad, but this did not work this time. The keypad lit up when I pushed the buttons first time after I changed the battery -- a good sign of life -- but then no more glowing green. So then I dig out the little key to manually open the door. Even though I have done this before, it still is hard to get the key in, and hard to pull the cable out to release to door from the chain drive, and hard to lift the door. I couldn't lift the door. It was kind of a crisis since I could not get to my car in there. So I look on Yelp for help and find these glowing reviews for Howard Nevitt and Ravenna Locksmith, in my neighborhood. I call him up, he answers fast, and proceeds to help me assess the situation -- probably just the cold weather shutting down the keypad. It is over 5 years old and maybe is now becoming vulnerable to moisture and freezing. With renewed information and courage, I take another run at manually opening the door. This time I use a crowbar and big rock for leverage and the door lifts up with not much trouble. Maybe it was frozen to the concrete floor, even though I had tried to kick on it some to free it. So now I have the remote control from the car, and the door opens with that and the inside wall button. It is definitely the keypad failing. Hopefully it will thaw out soon and work again. I found his phone number through a search on my mobile phone, so I hadn't read these reviews yet--I just knew that his business was fairly close to my home. What a stroke of luck--Howard is just the type of person you need in an emergency! My boyfriend, my Dad, and I had gone out for dinner and had a rude discovery that we'd locked ourself out of our apartment when we returned home. I had inadvertently locked the keys of my gun vault in the gun vault itself. Howard was quickly able to drill out the lock with with a special bit. I'm in a business where I work with many locksmiths and trust me, many of these so called locksmiths are not legit or bonafide. They have no idea how to practice their trade and often do a switch and bait routine with their pricing. Irresponsible and completely unprofessional, I ended up calling another locksmith and had him come over within the hour. As a previous reviewer said, Howard not only made a new key for my locks but he went beyond and made the locks in better shape than they originally were! I'd lost my key and required a new key for two different locks. He managed to do it in 30 minutes (and it probably took him longer than he normally works because I had asked him to explain every step to me; I just like to learn these things). He was very gracious, customer & service-oriented (welcomed every question), and extremely courteous. As for the actual service itself, Howard noticed that BOTH my locks were upside down, and righted them free of charge. He even saw that the lock didn't slide in the door quite right and sanded down the hole, making my lock now turn like a charm (before it had been a struggle)--ALSO free of charge. What makes Howard the best though is his honesty. When I asked about pricing estimates over the phone, he gave me one but told me it might change depending on the situation when he actually sees the locks (understandable). However when the job was done he had stuck with the pricing estimate and didn't press any petty charges for extra labor (ex: changing my locks' positions, making me a 2nd spare key, etc.). With every step he took to fix my locks, he explained with personable professionalism and genuine honesty. I'm actually quite sad that when I move back to Oregon I won't be able to call him up anymore for my key troubles. read more

I called him in a panic as I locked myself out of the house early this morning with my 3 yr. old son strapped inside the house in his high chair. Wow! I just got off the phone with Howard and he is great! I called with a problem related to my mailbox lock - I broke my key off in the thing and it's stuck. No mail for me! Howard said that he could come get the key out for a fee but a better option would be to fix it myself for free. He just spent five minutes describing all the different techniques that I could use to get the key out on my own. He even said that I could call him while I'm trying to get the key out in case I need him to talk me through it. What a great guy! Not only are his services extremely affordable, but he helped us find the hardware we wanted for our front door for the best price by advising us to buy it online rather than special ordering through him. This other business came out to quote me a door repair then tried to charge a $39 visit fee he hadn't mentioned on the phone. If you look at insider pages you'll find a lot of negative reviews for Howard and I suspect it is people who got scammed by this other business. I have not used Howard but next time I will be sure I'm calling the right person. read more
