Was pretty excited to try this bar while visiting the city because it was listed in the top 100 bars in the world. Upon entering you ride up the city's 2nd oldest elevator to the bar. We were escorted by a very friendly host who gave us a welcome drink on the way up. It was a very fun and unique entrance, but this is pretty much where the good vibes ended. The space itself doesn't really feel intimate or special and the service at the table was pretty mediocre. Cocktails were fine weren't particularly creative or amazing and I hated that the menu was a QR code. With so many good options in the city, I wouldn't put this at the top of my list.

We started off with such an experience! We were brought 10ish bottles or so of different liquors to blind taste. When you picked one you liked you tell the server and a drink is made with that liquor. It was quite fun to do it that way, but some of them were awful. It's a very nice area and the bar has a chill atmosphere with all types of seating. We were lucky to get in without a reservation on a Friday night, but they recommend it for earlier times.

Rayo was rated one of the best bars in the world so , of course I had to check them out. They have reservations available on their site, but I totally missed to plan and just showed up on a Friday night. We were a small group (3 people ) and were lucky enough to get a table. We were warned that we only had about 1.5 hours because our table had a reservation later in the night, which was enough time to enjoy the experience. The bar is in the upstairs section and you need to take an escorted elevator to get there. The experience is fun, they bring you a sampler of their 10 cocktails on droppers with little spoons, so you get to taste all the drinks on the menu before you make your selection. I found this to be extremely fun and interesting. I ended up getting my favorite cocktail along with some light snacks (duck tacos) that were really good. Such a great place to check out and centrally located to all the fun the area.

This is a cocktail bar with a unique concept. Upon arrival, we were taken through an elevator and handed our first "elevator cocktail." When we reached the upper floor, our group was presented with a box containing various flavor notes from which we could choose the cocktail based on our favorite flavor profile. The experience was enjoyable, but the actual taste of the drinks did not always match the flavor notes. Overall, the drinks were creative but tasted average.

One of the most memorable bar experiences of my life! We went to Rayo, which made the North America's 50 Best Bars 2023. We walked in and were escorted into the second oldest elevator in Mexico City. Inside the elevator, a gentleman opened a bucket of ice and poured us glasses of chai-infused cocktail as a starter. Then they brought out a glowing box (think like a Pandora's box) and said this is the menu. I was thinking, "What could possibly be in this box?" Inside were ten vials of liquid, numbered one through ten. The bartenders explained that we would pour a drop from each vial onto our hands and taste. Water was provided as a palate cleanser in between vials. This bar is very into exploring your senses. You don't know what is in the vials, it is up to you to interpret the flavor on your own. You then decide which vial you like best, and order it as a cocktail. The bartender walked us through what was in the cocktails--each one has their own unique story. Rayo aims to emphasize Mexican spirits other than tequila and mezcal, providing offerings like raicilla and Mexican rum. The cocktails are paired to regions, and the ingredients and garnished use fresh produce from those regions. One of our cocktails with guava and raicilla had a piece of crispy Jalisco kale, alternating between sweet and salty. Another had a "chicken" shaped garnish which was actually made out of chips, paying homage to the hot sauce covered potato chips sold on the street. The bartenders act as chemists as well, creating foams, bubbles, and clarified liquids. On our way out, we were offered a complimentary mini-cocktail of a floral yuzu cocktail with sea salt foam that looked just like bath bubbles, it tasted like drinking the ocean. We had a great conversation with the bartenders the entire time because we always like to sit at the bar. The hospitality was incredibly warm and I think the bartenders appreciated our genuine curiosity. I will never forget this visit and I recommend Rayo to anyone who visits Mexico City.

Very nice bar! The bartenders were lovely and the drinks were fun. They were not my favorite in the city but definitely well-made and worth a try if you're nearby. You enter and check in with the receptionist who brings you up a beautiful spiral staircase to the rooftop-esque bar.

The service was very quick and our server spoke English, which was very helpful. There was indoor and outdoor seating. We sat indoors and had happy that it wasn't too loud. So needless to say we had high expectations. The space itself is very cute offering a small bar, some indoor seating as well as some nice patio and outdoor seating. Overall it's not large, but it has a cozy vibe. We didn't have a reservation, though they are encouraged, but we went shortly after the opened and were able to be sat at the bar. The bartender was super friendly and happy to offer rec's. The menu is so fun, but primarily in Spanish. Some of their most popular cocktails have some fun doodles and imagery to go wuth them and we really enjoyed perusing the menu. We both started with the Ultima Duda or Last Doubt, which is their spin on an espresso martini that is mezcal based. Presentation was very fun and the cocktail was lovely. For my second round I went something a bit fresher and opted for the Sumi, which was gin based and had a lovely egg white foam, my favorite. Overall, the vibes were good, cocktails were solid, prices reasonable and service was good. Neither cocktails blew me away, but it was a very fun visit if you happen to be able to get a table or opted for a post dinner nightcap.

I say seated with parenthesis because most people end up standing here but we got lucky that a couple was leaving as we were right next to them after being asked our drink orders. It's kind of a weird system that they have and I think the staff didn't realize we didn't have our drink orders taken yet and asked the people behind us for theirs which was slightly annoying. It was a bit chaotic so I can see why it happened, but I do think they need a slightly better system. Anyways, the drinks were excellent and I love that they gave us a little small snack that included crickets (which I hadn't tried before yet). The vibes in here are really nice too. I love the dim lighting and the almost rock/clay atmosphere. The bathroom area is smaller than I was expecting but it was ok. I'd definitely return!

There are no seats, this is a standing bar except a few uncomfortable bar stools. Drinks were good, but I expected more. I got the colada and it was good, not too sweet. Almost clarified colada. Everything was very spirit forward which few of our friends really liked. This felt like a one time visit for me in CDMX

Honestly, I couldn't find the place at all. In fact I had to call my friend to see where it was. It's hidden inside a hotel and there's construction going around so it was definitely hard to find and walk through especially with heels on. Luckily we had a reservation because there were plenty of people waiting for seating! The man directed us downstairs to the actual speakeasy. What a super cool neat spot! It was quite dim, but we of course got the best seat in the house because of our party size. The music was top 40 which was an interesting touch considering the ambience of this place, but I wasn't complaining. Onto the drinks. I got the infamous - Peanut Butter & Jelly 100000/5 - I honestly think this is the drink that put them on the charts! The different flavors coming together within the drink and the little sandwich. The 'peanut butter & jelly' sandwich cookie was made from white chocolate and jam. I was honestly thoroughly impressed. I knew it was going to be good, but I didn't think it was going to be THIS good! Cookies n cream 5/5 - I'd still give this a 5/5 because it was also a great cocktail, but not as great as the peanut butter & jelly. I love that a lot of the bars have a little sweet treat to 'chase' the cocktail with. It definitely helps to add the uniqueness of the cocktails you're sipping on!

Honestly, while it was nice to experience it once and see what everyone talks about, I personally felt it was overrated. I've definitely been to better speakeasies. The atmosphere was extremely loud, the service was average at best, and the drinks were just okay. Some of them looked interesting and creative, but overall they were very alcohol forward and not particularly balanced or memorable to me. Would I go again? Probably not. It was more of a one-and-done experience. That being said, if you're curious because of the reputation and rankings, it may still be worth trying once to experience it for yourself. For me personally, though, it just wasn't anything special compared to other cocktail bars I've visited.
