Absolutely fantastic jerky!! I eat jerky all the time, at least once a week, and when I can get Ray's Own Brand, that's what I love! This company is the REAL Cattaneo Family, not the Kaney family who bought the name "Cattaneo Bros" that is also in San Luis Obispo. I stopped by there and was told by the owner Katelyn Kaney that SHE was related to the original owners, the actual Cattaneo Bros. But none of the current owners are related to the Cattaneo Family at all. The company was sold to the Kaney family, a different family. So the history Katelyn Kaney kept referencing is that of a different family, different owners, and has nothing to do with the Kaney family. I found that dishonest. The REAL Cattaneo Family is Ray's Own Brand. Ray and Nina Cattaneo. Not only do I prefer the Ray's Own Brand Jerky and Sausages, I prefer dealing with some honest business owners. read more

I really love Ray's meat but, this place would be so much better if Ray wasn't such a jerky. See what I did there? Moving on - my Mom and I stopped by the shop to check it out. I thought it would be a butcher shop...because they sell meat and one would think that's where they would sell it. Nope. It was a HOT, sweaty, tiny room with signs about what sausages they carry. I thought there would be a cold case with different sausages...you could buy different weights and get something fresh. What we got was what you buy in the store - prepackaged meat. So what's the point of coming here? It's not any cheaper than the store. But that's not the worst part. My mom had a few questions about what spices were in the meat since we have some allergies in the family. Ray's response was very rude. He acted like we were trying to learn the secret recipe or something. Give me a break. He didn't greet us or thank us. Super rude and really off putting. You lost some local customers. Sent my father in law to pick up a few bags of jerky this past Saturday. Online price $33. He was charged $40 because Ray claims the price of meat went up. I agree the price of everything is going up but this makes them guilty of False Advertisement. Guess I'll go back to Cattaneo Bros. Really upsetting when you try and support local companies and they did not put any effort into customer service. read more

I never thought any store-bought jerky could be better than Cattaneo Bros, which I ate growing up between times I couldn't get homemade jerky from my dad or friends' dads. By that I mean SUGAR FREE and authentic; all other store-bought "jerky" (ha ha) is loaded with sugar sugar sugar sugar sugar -- Ray's Own and Cattaneo's are about the ONLY brands you can buy with zero sugar (except the teriyaki). That alone makes both companies' jerky worth five stars. No cowboy or rancher I ever heard of put sugar in jerky .... sugar is for CANDY. Only a city cowboy would put sugar in jerky! For store-bought, if you love thick cut, Ray's Own is EASILY the best, by a landslide. Hands down. I always have a bag or two in my vehicle, its shelf life is forever and it's a godsend when you're in a rush on the road but need to eat smart. Best of all, this ZERO SUGAR jerky is made pretty close to the way the real old cowboys and ranchers made it and still do. Ray's Own is SUPER YUM. As for all the SAUSAGES ... like the jerky, Cattaneo Bros brand is pretty good, a smart choice yes, but RAY'S OWN ARE THE BEST if you really want to impress somebody who knows authentic old time stuff. You'll only get better if you befriend an old ranch family that's been making sausage for seven generations and Ray might be using the same recipe anyway because he probably wheedled it out of one of those ol' timer cowboys!!! I think I sit smack dab in the middle of the folks that either super love or super hate Ray's. I've gone through tons of cured/preserved meat vendors in my times and I think it comes down to taste and texture. I think for the jerky it is a bit on the tough side, even though it comes in rather large strips. Also the vinegar level has a tang kick to it that some may love but for me I think if there was either more salinity or even sweetness it would be more well balanced. Best beef jerky I've ever had! The pieces are so tender. Love the variety of flavors. You can taste the quality of their ingredients with each bite. Love supporting such a high quality brand. Best beef jerky ever! This is the only beef jerky I have found that does not have sugar added to it. It is super flavorful like a well seasoned, steak. It is quality. Now I can't go back to that store bought stuff. I like the "Hickory Smoked Peppered" and "Hot" flavors the best. Once I was in charge of dinner for a group of people while camping in the middle of nowhere. I added thin shreds of this beef jerky to cream and noodles for a beef stroganoff. Everybody loved it. I was first introduced to their beef jerky by a friend who had it shipped to her. At first I thought, how can this be so good that you order it and have it shipped to you!? Well, now I'm having it shipped to me too! The beef jerky is so good, that I haven't had a chance to try their other products, but those too have gotten good reviews. If your driving through SLO, many of the grocery stores and gas stations carry this, so look for it or call them and ask where you can get it. read more

I love their Jerky and Sausage. But I would just leave it at that. My father got them to cater our wedding and needless to say I was pretty disappointed. The service was very questionable and the food was sub par. Lets start with the service. They acted like they were doing us a huge favor by catering our wedding. Almost like we should be honored to have them. For 6k they would show up, serve the food buffet style and then leave. No clean up, no nothing. They even had the nerve to tell us we couldn't take our wedding photos in the patio of our venue because they needed to set up. IT WAS OUR WEDDING! Then they were just rude to people as they were serving. A few people went back to get seconds and they were already gone. Once the last person went through the buffet they packed up and left. Didn't leave the left overs or anything, just bailed. Now the food. I was so disappointed. The steak was like chewing on piece of jerky. It was almost like they heated up jerky and served it as steak. They said they didn't cook tri tip because it was to tough and grissely. This sirloin they cooked was so tough it would take me 5 minutes to eat one bite. Then the chicken was just super dry. Both had good flavor, but were just severely over cooked or something. The worst part about Rays was the service. I was just shocked how they could treat people so rudely at a wedding. Nobody was rude to them, and they were not doing us a favor. We paid them a crap ton of money. I would definitely look for anyone else than this for catering options. Look for someone who actually cares about what they do. read more

I purchased this product while traveling from Denver only to open and realize it's TOUGH (I HAD TO CUT IT WITH SCISSORS!!) NO TASTE AND DRY AS BONE!!! I contacted the company and their response was..."I should take it to the retailer as they don't stand behind their products because they wholesale out!!!!!!!!??????????" The retailer won't stand behind the product either as I would have to take it to them personally and gee...I LIVE IN DENVER. I won't recommend the product nor the unprofessional way the do and handle business. As a manufacture or a product you stand behind the product all the way. They are doing business and they them selves don't recognize that maybe a product was sold not up to standards and they should do something about it.. BEWARE OF JERKY SUBSTANDARD QUALITY. Fantastic Jerky. I went on a jerky binge the other day and was suprised to see a brand from San Luis Obispo. I absolutely adore the teriyaki, so i decided to drive to the shop to get some from the source. All of the meat is hand cut and cured on site by Ray himself and a few helpers. Awesome jerky! The hot is one of the best blends of red and black pepper ever tasted. There is a bit of vinegar underneath but the acidity is usually perfect. This isn't one of the soggy gooey fake jerky types. It is, however, pretty much a dried hunk of sirloin. I get it shipped to Las Vegas it's so good. read more

I experienced Ray's own brand Linguica a couple of years ago, and then found their jerky!! I was so impressed with the taste and texture. Now i'm hooked on nothing but Ray's Own Brand Sausage and Beef Jerky. My husband is a huge fan of their Rib Eye Steak. He say's "nobody age's steak like Ray" We are hooked! DO NOT USE RAY'S OWN BRAND!!! I have to admit that the meal was tasty, but not even close to worth the price and the hassle! 1st-When contracted to cater our event, they required an $800 deposit! I have coordinated several events prior to this and have NEVER asked to put down a deposit. When coordinating something like a class reunion, you do not start out with any funds until you sell tickets and you can't sell tickets until you have a ticket price, which is based partially on the price per plate that the caterer charges. I wouldn't have done this, but the committee member in charge did not know any better. 2nd-After quoting us a price (we chose them because of the price) and taking our deposit, they called a month later saying that they would have to raise the price per plate....$8.00!!!!! That's 30%!!!!! That's crazy!!!! We had a deal!!!! I told Nina Cattaneo (Ray's daughter) that we did not have it in our budget. That I based the ticket price on the quote we accepted! She verbally asked if I could live with a $4 increase instead. I told her it would be tight but that I would agree to that, we just couldn't do more. She offered to talk to Ray and see what she could do. I took this to mean that they were going to try and do better than the $4 increase, but no..... When I finally received the updated paperwork it said dinner $24/plate appetizers $6 a plate!! The appetizers were part of the original quote of $24 a plate. Nina had a "great" idea. She told me to just leave out the appetizers and I'd be able to stay at the $24/plate. Great solution Nina, that means our meal is $6/plate more than originally quoted but we have no appetizers! I had told her that I couldn't do more the a $4 increase or I would have to figure something else out when we spoke. So I started looking for another caterer for the event. When I let them know that I may have found someone at their original price to us they became irate! Ray called the committee member that had set this up and cussed him out and letting him know that there was NO WAY that we would get our deposit back!!! That's extortion!!! They take a substantial deposit, then raise their prices, but the deposit is "non-refundable" so what is a person to do if they just don't have the money to cover the increase in their event budget? I'll tell you what; it comes out of their pocket! Because you have no recourse, extortion! Nina, had apologized for the increase when we first spoke, sighting the cost of beef and saying they had never done this before. Unfortunately, I recalled that they had done my wedding (but called Cattaneo Brothers at the time) and had done the same thing to us then. Which doesn't make a difference because we had an agreed upon price that should have been honored! It's especially awful to do to a non-profit event that was trying to raise money to donate to the high school, but what about the average bride trying to plan within a budget? If that's you, then stay away from Ray's!! They play dirty! read more

I purchased a bag of Rays Own Brand Terriyaki Beef jerky at a small Grocer in Avila beach as I am a huge jerky fan. It stated "Sweet and Tender", neither of which was true. It was the TOUGHEST jerky I have ever experienced and took over 3 minutes to chew to even attempt to swallow. I am amazed at the good reviews, as this was the worst jerky ever. I decided to call customer service whilst still chewing the jerky at 3 minutes and counting... Hoping for an explaination, questions about that particular product, or the offer of perhaps a different flavor or batch which would show me that this was just a random "off bag." The customer service response was the most insincere and smarmy " Thank you sooooooooo much", that I have ever received, with not so much as the offer of "I am sorry you had a bad experience with our product..."
