Excellent old school barbershop. They use a system where you can sign in and they text you when your turn is getting close. I have to say that this is a great idea. I used to come to this place often for my hair cuts. They do an okay enough job, the thing about this barber shop is that they don't do reservations. When you sign in you can easily expect a one hour plus wait for every single person ahead of you and i'm not exaggerating. Approximately 40 minutes out of each of those hours you're waiting is because of the following: some guy enters the building with a briefcase selling swap meet jewelry is distracting/selling bracelets to the barbers. The pizza guy showed up and the barbers are all now on their lunch break, and everyone including those with their hair HALFWAY cut are now on hold and are prisoner until the barbers finish eating. They don't even bother washing their hands before or after they eat which is pretty gross and my particular barber even pulled a hair off her tongue after eating a slice. God FORBID Steve Harvey or Judge Judy is on the TV because they will be sure to distract the barbers for at least a hot 5 minutes even while they are severely backlogged. My barber walked out of the building on at least 3 or 4 occasions and never returned forcing all of her waiting clientele to merge to the 2 remaining barbers, doubling the already eternal wait time. If you are ab-so-lutely desperate for a 30$ haircut then come on down and bring your phone charger, you're in for a maddeningly long ride. read more

Never again. It's my on fault, but still. Never again. EJ has a great business model for his shop but unfortunately, when he's not there, the whole thing falls apart. I just paid $16 for a horrible haircut. It started when my regular barber was once again no there. In her defense, what she lacks in reliability she makes up for in talent. So, I made the crucial mistake of taking the first available barber. After making me wait for some unknown reason, Nephew said he could cut my hair. Not only did I NOT get the haircut I asked for, I walked out looking like I have a receding hairline. No razor was offered (the place is called razor king... I mean seriously?) I visited the barbershop last Sunday (04/18/2021) and I was very impressed with my haircut. I received a great cut from Nolan (barber). He placed great attention to my request and did exactly as I requested. The sign of a very good barber. Even my wife liked the cut. It was my first time at this establishmen. The booking and appointment system is amazing. You know exactly where you are on the list, and will be notified when it is your turn if you need to leave. However, don't bother showing Shai a photo of what you want. I presented with a full afro just so I could achieve a beautifully feminine, full, pompadour with tapered sides, and long side burns, and ended with a short masculine, military box cut, with shaved sides and no side burns. The looks were COMPLETELY different. A blind man could see it. It was horrible. I was mortified, and there was no amount of gifted talent that could correct it. Months of preparation and research GONE!! It has been 2 weeks and I am still mourning the loss of my full, curly hair and regretting my decision to go to Razor King and allowing Shai to touch my hair. From the moment I entered the vibe was good, professional, comfortable. I was immediately and pleasantly acknowledged. I only went in for a trim and edge-,up. I can't recommend Saidah highly enough. She greeted me and we went back to her chair. She asked what I wanted to do, I told her, and it was on. On this particular afternoon and night they were doing a customer appreciation party and having a famous Italian restaurant do the catering. They were making it look real nice and I was late getting there to get my haircut, way after closing time, but they took me, Took their time and treated me like royalty. I did a 'walk-in' a few weeks ago for an edge-up & beard trim, just in advance of some business & holiday engagements. The owner/proprietor 'EJ' took my appointment. Very professional (greeting, solid handshake, etc.) and not a long wait. Barber used clean/sanitized equipment, hot towel for the face, and took his time to ensure sharp, meticulous, razor-quality work. Also got a chance to walk some Sunday NFL on the TVs in the shop. Once finished, it truly was one of the best cuts I'd received in Houston to date. While a bit of a drive to the Northwest side, it was definitely worth it...plus the availability on the back part of the weekend was a major plus. I'll be back for certain. read more

I've been going here for the past year or so and Que is always friendly and does a great job. The first time in they walked me through the process. All the staff is friendly. I choose to stick with him because I liked his beard trimming the best. I've shopped around and they are a great price for what they do. I spend 30.99 for a full razor shave and a full service beard trim. Was really surprised and happy with service. I stopped taking my son to Black owned barber shops many years ago because of the lack of customer service. I would walk into a shop and was lucky if I got greeted. Once I sat in a shop for 10 minutes and not a single Barber said boo to me. I finally walked out. Another time I waited 3 hours for a seat to come available. No exaggeration. I felt ignored and trapped. Finally I took my business to the Asian owned place a few blocks away. Cuts were decent, cheap and I never had to wait more than 15 minutes for a chair. They had my loyalty for years. Moving on, I decided to give US another try. Walked into this shop and was immediately greeted by the owner. He directed me to sign in. We barely got comfortable in the waiting area before we were called. My sons barber, Wes, was professional. He listened to what I wanted and skillfully cut my son's hair. I wasn't completely happy with the cut as I prefer a closer crop but my son said he liked it so I left it alone. No fault on Wes. I'm not so great at the lingo used to describe men's cuts but after a few more visits I'm sure we'll get it figured out. The price was probably fair but I've been paying $8 to $9 for his cuts for so long, I was feeling some kind of way about paying twice that. After 3 years of bypassing this barber shop due to a previous bad experience, I decided to give them another try. However, some places just breed negativity, and once it is there it is usually there to stay. After uninstalling braids I was in desperate need of cut. I called ahead to explain what I needed and I was asked to stop by for a consultation. I get there and immediately things start to go bad. The barber starts making insulting comments about how curly my hair is. Next, while I'm attempting to describe what I wanted the barber starts arguing with me about terminology; what's a fade vs what's a taper. So this goes on for a few minutes before I finally clarified that I'm NOT a barber, that,s his skillset and even though I may not be using the terms that he would use I have a picture ...which I had already shown the barber. At this point, I've already been there almost 20 minutes. I show him more pictures and he says our textures vary, so I then I show a picture of myself when my hair was just a bit longer thinking surely... showing a picture of myself, so there won't be concerns about texture variation, would help. The barber looks at the picture and says I only showed him that picture to show how fit I am. I look at him for a moment with what must have been a very incredulous look on my face because I'm thinking are you freakin serious ?!?! I tell him that I chose that picture because he was complaining that none of the pictures were close up enough to get a good view of the cut from all angles and that was the best picture to illustrate the sides of my cut. At this point, I'm still not in the chair and with each passing minute not only is the barber getting more obnoxious, but I'm beginning to think that he just didn't have the confidence or skill to cut my hair. After almost a half hour there, that is exactly what the barber admits to. He says he'sjust not comfortable cutting my hair. He says if he cuts my hair I'll probably get angry and then he'll get angry. Yup. That happened. He then suggested that I should go to my regular guy, take pictures from all sides and have them available for my next visit . Yes true story lol. Truly, if I have to go through all of that just to get a decent cut at this shop, why would I bother coming back?!?! The answer to that, of course, is that I shouldn't go back. There's a term often used in business "lack of confidence" and that is definitely how I feel about this place. To make matters worse they were rude and the place was unclean...hair collected on the floor, messy work stations, and copious amounts of dirt and dust on the industrial size fans they had blowing. 3 strikes... you're out. Buh-bye. Incidentally even though I did have to wait till the next day to see my regular guy ,,,(Quick the barber off Dairy Ashford) he, as always, did an amazing job. Quick is by far the best barber I have come across in the Houston area. He's equally skilled with both clippers and shears, keeps and impeccably clean shop, and is very professional. So even though I will never, EVER go back to Razor King, I'm always very honest on my reviews and try to be balanced. I do have to give Razor King kudos for one single thing. They have a sign posted that makes it very clear that no profanity or harsh language will be allowed. I thought that was cool. Yet, it certainly didn't make up for the rudeness and the fact that I was there for almost 35 minutes and did not walk outta there with a cut. Hmmm actually... I should probably be grateful. I have been coming here for about six months now and have no complaints. In response to Aj B review, you might consider them unprofessional if you compare them to a Marine Barber who is all business. I consider them social, and always have a good time, especially compared to my other barber shops in the area who talk on the phone when you are in the chair, or they don't speak English and you stare at the mirror. (Of course you always have an option of staring at the mirror if that is your thing.) I've never have a complaints with my barber, at first Al and then Toya, their cut and shave are always clean and straight. I have only waited once in the past 6 months and usually just hop right into the chair, but I usually show up at weird hours. They are bit more expensive then my $6 barber, but for $27 I get more then just a cut. I also get a shave and some hawt sauce, prompt and great service, and air blown to clean me off a little. $27 is also similar to other barbers who offer the same service. As far as special discounts goes for different races, I pay the price posted on the wall every time. If they were giving discounts, it wasn't raced based cause I would hope my chocolatey brown skin would qualify. The only complaint is that the parking lot is small. I got to pray to sweet baby Shiva to not let him destroy my big car every time I roll up in there. It's not unmanageable though. Finally, they really care about there customers, and their reviews here. The owner EJ was all kinda of distraught on his birthday because of that one bad and unfair review, of course it prompted me to write this review in his defense. I recently had a fight with cancer and the chemotherapy caused my hair to start thinning and falling out. I had never done a clean shave before, so I started to look for a barber that I could trust. I certainly made a great decision by going to Razor King Barber Shop. Avery did an amazing job making me feel comfortable and also provided a ton of scalp-care advice for a bald headed newbie. The place was pretty busy, but I was greeted by everyone upon entering and Avery was ready for me within 5 minutes. I could tell most of their patrons were return customers because everyone in the place seemed to be having good conversation. This really helped me feel comfortable considering how new the whole experience was for me. All in all, I know I have found my barber while I'm waiting for my hair to grow back. This place, and Mr. Avery Johnson, are highly recommended. They're friendly, accomodating, and full of useful information for taking care of your new cut (or shave). Definitely worth the price paid!
