I have had a poor experience going through their mortgage process as you can tell that processing and underwriting do not work together to serve the customer. Mortgage processing seems scared of upsetting the underwriting department. They don't seem to have a checklist of items needed as I was asked for documents last minute that should have been requested from the beginning and now I have a delayed closing. They are more focused on their internal department and way of doing things than the impact to the customer and customer service experience. read more

Terrible customer service. I haven't been with the bank long but it has already been the worst experience I've ever had with a bank. The customer support team on the phone is extremely rude and unprofessional. I talked to Marshall who said he was a supervisor. I had an issue where I had an overdraft fee. I wasn't notified about this until the next day when I received an email. So I took quick action and added the funds to my account. I was only short $8 and so I called to ask if the fee could be waived as I hadn't had this happen before. The RBFCU website states that the fee can be reversed at their discretion which is why I called. The first person I talked to, Paul, said he would check with a supervisor as they have the final say on this. That's when I was connected to Marshal who was very condescending and rude. Wouldn't really look into this matter. He just kept pointing out that this was my fault and that's why he wasn't going to do anything about it. I asked him if he could take my situation into account as the website states that they could reverse it but he said "point in case" he couldn't because of my user error. Which I understand but his time was very condescending and unprofessional. Again the worst experience I have ever had with a bank who was so unwilling to listen and help their customer. Wish I could leave a zero star but it won't let me. They flagged my mother's account due to "elder fraud" and my mom went in twice in one day and still no resolution. She can not get on the webpage to check her account now and when she tries to call, they want the last transaction!!! I've been a member with them for years. Never had a problem. Never had a NSF, nothing. I miscalculated and two bills went through, which created a NSF. They could clearly see I had the funds in other accounts. They decided not to pay it and let it go through twice. Charged me $96 for a single miscalculation. Refused to refund the fees. Told me I had till the end of the day it occurred to make it right. I explained I was out of town, as it was a holiday so I wasn't even checking my account. They still refused. I will never do business with them again. I'm definitely moving my loan and all my accounts elsewhere, so how much money are they loosing in interest as opposed to refunding a fee that isn't costing them anything? Fools!!! You learn something new every day and after all of my years of being a great client of theirs, they are so greedy and short sided so as to loose it all over $96. Find a bank that is reasonable and better yet...one that doesn't have NSF fees. There are plenty of them, I've checked. read more

I wish ZERO stars was an option. These idiots issued a credit card to someone in my name via an online application. (How is that even possible? No signature? No photo ID?) The thief charged over $5,000!! They said they had closed the account (along with a checking/savings that they had also opened), but even after jumping through all the hoops (police report, FTC Identity Theft Report, alerts I put out for the credit reporting agencies), they told the credit bureaus that the card was legit and my responsibility! I've called dozens of times, am always put on hold, and when I leave messages they never return my calls. This has been going on for months. Thanks to them, my credit score has dropped OVER 200 POINTS! Who knows, maybe it was one of their own employees who committed the fraud. Savings account has been fine and I haven't had any issues with it, but I don't recommend their credit cards. Mine never seems to work despite calling several times and they continuously raise the interest rate without informing me. I get alerts from another service that monitors for it so that's the only way I know that my interest rate is more than double what it was a couple years ago when I got the card. Their customer service team has never been very helpful, they just tell me they don't know why my card isn't working and never offer a solution. Luckily I have other more reliable cards to use so I've pretty much abandoned that card. read more

I was selling my car to a customer of RBFCU and all I can say is "what a PITA." I furnished a clear title but they still wanted a power of attorney and my drivers license!?! Why do they need my DL when they have a clear vehicle title? I don't have this much hassle at county tax office!?! I also have to say I HATE the customer service model.... The "specialized loan" customer service people do a VTC on the computer. The local "CSR" loads things into the scanner and the "specialist" processes the paperwork. I feel this is a cold process but maybe I'm old - why bother having any branches? I could have done this over my computer from home! The process took WAY too long - and they close at 5! I thought CU were designed for us working folks - I barely made it before 5 and then all the road blocks and I couldn't complete the transaction.,,, The people are nice enough and the lobby is good BUT RBFCU needs to relook their business model of VTC banking! read more

Their web system does not gives enough information for when and how charges are taken from the account. Their web services lack a lot of details when you need information regarding your movements and money handling. That causes that once and again you end up with penalties that, if you were aware of money movements beforehand, you could do something about it - like money transfers. But RB has a system that not helps its members but hurts them. In a nutshell, their web services are not suitable for serious money management. read more

We have had the worst experience ever just trying to keep up with our balances and transactions. Since day one we can't see our balance and it takes hours just to make a payment. Every time we call in to make a payment the person on the line can't even explain what's going on! Now we have thousands of dollars in overdraft due because our cards were allowed to go over the limit. When I opened my bank account no one had mentioned to me about the limitations of the over draft protection, so I spend a few days using my card thinking it would come out of my savings if I didn't have any money in my checking account, however I kept using my card and had -170 dollars in my account. I asked them if they can waive it (first time fee like every other bank usually does) because I've been a loyal customer. I have been with RBFCU for years now and I've never had this problem with them until now. So whenever you open a bank account with them TRUST ME THEY WILL CONVINCE YOU TO APPLY FOR AN OVER DRAFT PROTECTION PLAN, but if I were you I wouldn't, it's a tactic they do because they KNOW one day you'll forget to check your bank account, it's all business to get more money out of you. read more

Do not! I repeat...DO NOT got them for a mortgage refinance. They don't communicate, ran my credit twice because they let it expire. The credit report can't be more than 90 days old. I refinanced my mortgage with RBFCU in early 2020 and the process was a nightmare. There were no communications and they would contact you only when they feel like it.. it took months to finally get it done. But that was just the beginning of the nightmare... I setup automated payment on most of my bills to be sure I pay on time. I did the same with my Mortgage payment with RBFCU.. on June 1st 2021, my bank notify me of many payments bounces.. upon closer examination to my account, RBFCU "accidentally withdraw my payment twice!! This is a big mortgage payment and create a domino effects that caused bounce checks/overdraft.. RBFCU caught its own error and notified the customers as of June 2nd.. but has not yet return the money they "accidentally" withdrawn. They also won't refund the bank overdraft fees or return check fees unless I send my other banks a waive bank fees request letter from RBFCU and was refused to be credited back.. which is crazy! When talking to a Karen @ RBFCU.. asking how this happen.. she simply said "we are all human and we made mistake sometime" WOW.. this is a freaking credit union.. don't you have better system to avoid human error? this is a huge error that affect many people's life!! Not only they haven't refund the extra payment they drafted.. they will not take care of late fees without making you jumping through hoops and they don't even have any type of check and balances to avoid stuff like this from happening. I've worked for several different financial institutions, banks and credit unions, and if I ever came across this situation I would GLADLY refund the fee. Just saying. RBFCU has good youth accounts. After the youth turns 18, however, it's just not worth it. Their customer service at their New Braunfels location is the worst ever, and why they hire anyone who dislikes dealing with the public to staff their welcome desk is beyond me. "Justin" was the snottiest, most unprofessional person I've dealt with in ages, and that's really saying something, as I drive through McD's for a tea every day. Once I finally got to the manager, she was very nice and helpful, but the attitude of "Justin" was enough to ruin any good feelings I've had toward this credit union. Also, there is little help for you in person at the branches, anyway -- to open an account or do ANYTHING else, you'll be placed in an office in front of a computer screen, and someone from a remote location will help you, while you sign whatever it is and actually scan it back to them. I can do that at my home, I certainly don't need to go sit in someone else's office to do that - very inconvenient and impersonal. Been with them for years. Went to branch once to open up a savings account for my new baby. Despite trying to call the branch (you cannot call them directly) I reached the 1800 number who told me I could just walk in and open the account. I went in and they told me I really needed to schedule an appointment to open an account. She said she would see if someone could help me. I did get the account opened. First issue I had. They cannot seem to update our mailing address for ONE whole year despite at least a dozen attempts. I was told they were contacting their IT department but no resolve. They do not offer Zelle. They need days of notice to setup withdraws to outside accounts. They charge you 15.00 to wire money. The used to offer 10 cents every debit card transaction (which is one reason why we signed up) but that was ended that same year we became members. I have been talked down to by their chat team. And then the icing on the cake was today when I noticed that I had insufficient funds fee. They said, well you had until 7pm yesterday to transfer funds from savings (which is what I did this AM), to avoid the fee. I said I did not know I had insufficient funds. Why no alert? I check my balance everyday. I never saw a problem with my balance. I would have expected a negative balance. She told me I would have to check my activity to see pending deductions and note that there was not enough money. Who does that? I do not keep excessive money in my checking because I have been a victim of identity theft where someone drained my checking by skimming my ATM card. So I transfer from savings when low to cover transactions if I miscalculate my monthly expenses. I do not want courtesy pay because if someone does this to me again, it would just continue to allow withdraws. I clearly have the money. RBFCU surely did not need 24.00 to decline the transaction. I am sure that is automated. It is just a money grab from their hard working customers. Especially when they decline the transaction and do not temporarily give the merchant their money. After calling customer service they say i could have made my withdrawal through the ATM because they increased the amount to $1k for Covid, but they did not send out communication she added. This is a sad moment for me. I've been an RBFCU member for more than 35 years, more than half of my life. I'm old-school, I see value in brand loyalty and in 'keeping it local.' I'm not a troll, my work and family leaves no time for that stuff. RBFCU never failed me over these many years--since I was a young airman assigned to RAFB. RBFCU facilitated my purchase of a dozen vehicles, three houses and numerous other loans. Although I work for a competitor, I never even entertained 'changing horses' nor do I want to now. However, over the past 18 months, every transaction was marred by incompetence and disappointment. At times I've felt as though I was dealing with the DMV. We will likely lose our earnest money and a house deal due to the latest debacle. Maybe we'll be able to find a lender in time to save our deal. Regardless, my days of doing business with RBFCU are coming to an end. And that makes this a sad moment for me. Rating set as one star because zero is not an option. If you want to be screwed out of your money, you're better off going to BackPage. I started banking with them back in 2010 and the service then was relatively good. Fast forward to 2016 and 2017 when I requested verification of deposits for an affidavit of support needed for my fiancée's k visa, they were indignant toward my request and felt I was asking too much, but begrudgingly created the letter. They bemoaned the idea of updating the letter later and offered to do it as a 'one time courtesy' and refused to do anything after that, when all that was required was the total amount in deposits for 12 months, current balance, and when the account was opened, LITERALLY something that Excel could conveniently do for them and that I was willing to do if they could put in a letter form. It was after this that I decided to go with a different credit union and called them in April and May of this year to let them know I was closing the account and needed all activity blocked. When I get ready to close the account this weekend I noticed they allowed two payments by my car insurance company to go through and be rejected, hitting me with $50 in fees despite my prior request. Even calling the very morning before the second one posted, I told them to block it and they shrugged. They told me I called on May 17 which I confirmed, but then 'magically' couldn't find that call despite verifying it in the morning and listening to every other call I made concerning the account and refused to waive the fees. How convenient. So here I am, writing this review because they earned it. Bank elsewhere, period. Whether it's Security Service Credit Union or even godawful Bank of America, anywhere's better than this shithole of a banking institution. Yes, my review is written in anger and is biased all to hell, but you know what? You'll be doing the same thing months or years from now if you give them the chance. If you save $50 from being stolen (or greater amounts based on other reviews), then this review has served its purpose. read more

I wanted to do something special for my wife and kids by purchasing a fiberglass pool for our home. Since I don't have 50K sitting in my bank account, I figured I would apply for a home equity loan. This is my third home, and my first time applying for a home equity loan. My loan was conditionally approved for 50K and moved to a loan processor. I submitted all the required documents, including my mortgage statement. RBFCU informed me I would have to pay for a $500 appraisal of my home. I had no issue with paying the appraisal fee. However, I think RBFCU could have been a little more forthcoming and let me know my house has to be approved at 465K to receive a loan of 50K before I paid for the appraisal. I owe 323K; I purchase my home for 340K, and the most expensive home in my neighborhood is 415K. "I" knew my home was not worth more than 400K, which at 400K still would not be enough to loan me anything. My home did appraise for 375K. The issue I have, which is partially my fault, is that though I would receive 80 percent of the appraisal. My understanding was 375K - 323K = 52K * .80 percent, and my loan would get approved at 41K. RBFCU should have schooled me that I required a substantial appraisal value or a lot paid off to get any amount approved. "You do better when you know better." All I ask is to help your members out and just don't take our money. Make sure the professionals, which is you, identify situations like this. It's just good customer service. This was a 500 dollar lesson taught by RBFCU. read more
