Breakfast sandwich with a side of curly fries
    Murray W.

I recently popped into RFM with some family to try it out for the first time and we were not disappointed! Their menu is fun and approachable, with the same sort of things that you'd see on many casual restaurant menus - burgers, fried chicken sandwiches, bowls and poutines - but done with their in-house vegan products. I'm not sure if their breakfast sandwich is just a weekend thing (it's not on the menu on their website), but I was keen to see what that was like. We posted up at a counter along the street-side windows to people watch, although there is a bit more seating further inside (you don't seem to see pics of it here or on Google, but there is more seating than for just four people!). My niece and nephew both got the donair. It was actually their first one ever, real meat or Real Fake, and they seemed quite happy! I appreciated the flavour profile and the crisp edges of RFM's facsimile of Nova Scotia's famous mystery meat. My wife went for the Curly Fries Supreme, which utilizes classic McCain curly fries. Getting the deep fryer treatment, they're *much* better than being done in an oven at home. All the more so when so generously topped with cheeze sauce, "sour cream", tomatoes, green onion and seitan "bacon". Banana peppers made an added appearance for a nice little punch. I very quite pleased with my breakfast sandwich (and side of au naturel curly fries). The vegan sausage patty had an herby hit to it, and the cheeze slice was ooey gooey and pleasantly salty. I'm not sure what the "egg" was, but it was a little on the soft side, with the white falling apart; I'm not sure if that's to do with its inherent structure or its cooking. A small quibble on a great sandwich though! I love what RFM is doing and they're doing a helluva job at it!

Dressing is tasty, chick'n has good texture. Although the lettuce could (should) be chopped smaller, feel like I'm eating lettuce spaghetti. Was starving so I dug it before the photo. I also purchased some big ass cookies and cheeZ. Friendly staff. Cute lil joint!

I've known Lauren for a few years now and have always been insanely impressed with her skills and talents as a chef. To have her open Halifax's first ever vegan butcher shop is a huge deal and she deserves so much success. Real Fake Meats offers vegan cheeses, meats and light fare meals and take home dishes such as mac and cheese, sandwiches, Donairs and more. I've tried many different offerings from them and absolutely everything is incredible. The meats are moist, have awesome texture and taste! The cheeses much the same. Vegans and non-vegans alike are sure to love this place!

I first popped in on my way home from work, just happening to walk by on my way up Salter. Even my admittedly mild to barely-there hunger was enough to pique my curiosity enough to pull the trigger. And hey, waiting for Halifax Transit is a risky business and I don't want to starve! The warmer still had a few options in it (with further pre-made options in the display cooler) - beef, pork and veggie. I probably should have went for the beef to help restock my red blood cells after a recent blood donation, but pork always seems to call to me. Empanadas also come with a sauce , and I went for the spicy chimichurri. Like many savoury pastries, empanadas are made for being an on-the-go meal, and I'm sure other commuters at my bus stop were jealous! The pastry itself was lightly crispy, but it wasn't dried out from being in the warmer for too long. As for the filling, the mix of shredded pork, corn, onions and other veg made for a solid mini-meal. The empanada wasn't heavily seasoned, but the chimichurri made up for that. Nearly stealing the show completely, the deeply vegetal sauce had hints of spice and further richness from olive oil that I was absolutely loving! No joke, Empanada Shop should be selling this by the jar! A return visit, also post-work, saw me go for the beef empanada. Once again, the pastry was well-executed, with a supple flakiness that held up to its delicious contents without being tough or too thick and bready. The ground beef filling was rich and hearty, with additional traditional fillings of black olives, corn and hard-boiled egg. Once again the empanada was a vehicle for the fantastic chimichurri. When a mom and pop place like The Empanada Shop is making niche food as good as they are, you can only hope that they keep making a go of it, enriching the city (and my diet) with their wonderful wares.

It's larger than it was first time I visited, but still in the little strip mall off Chain Lake Drive. There are two rooms either side of the entrance, both cool, subtly lit and cozy. It was just after they opened on a summer's Thursday morning, so I was the first customer and quickly ordered the meat thali. This comes in six segments. Two meat curries which change from time to time (today it was beef and chicken). A very nice dahl, a good portion of rice, chickpea salad and a quartered plain naan. All very tasty and overall quite a sizeable portion. I was on the ravenous side of peckish when I arrived and left thoroughly stuffed, so you definitely get your value for the $23 with tip. It's not licensed, but has a nice line in cold drinks should you so desire. It's no surprise this place is consistently voted No.1 curry house in Halifax, though it has a lot more competition than it did when it first opened. Thoroughly recommended.

Anyway, the pakoras were ok. Butter chicken was very oily. Yes, oily, not butter oil, just oily. (Look at the picture). The best part of the meal is the rice. But even that's not good. It has a nice color to it though. Food is pretty mediocre. I'd come back for a quick takeout but i'd go to other places if I actually want a real, good indian food.

We also ordered 2 drinks and a baja burrito to-go. Complaints: - the pangoa was completely missing avocado - the lime wedge was the driest lime wedge I have ever encountered. I don't even know if I got a drop out of it - it felt like the woman who took our ordered was rushing us. We started off ordering a burrito, she asked us if we wanted anything else, and we said "um" and she said total and directed us to pull up. Her mistaking our order was finished a couple of times was very inconvenient. We were also not taking long to tell her the orders as well. We picked everything out before summoning her on the speaker. This was maybe an hour ago from this post. Tips: - the pangoa is very filling and there was a lot of rice. I would ask if they could do half rice and half salad next time

We're trying to consume seafood for every lunch and dinner. For lunch today, we chose McKelvies, based on reviews and the fact that we happened to be visiting the Halifax boardwalk. It was a late lunch so we weren't famished, but hankering for something tasty. Both of my picks came from the Starter & Appetizer Menu: Mussels in white wine sauce and Garlic-truffle fries. My wife ordered a regular entree so our server scored big points when both orders arrived at our table simultaneously! The mussels were harvested from a local farm yesterday and their fresh, sweetness testified to that detail. The white wine broth, laced with thyme, garlic and other herbs was so tasty that I drained my bowl to the last drop. The truffle fries were a satisfying compliment to the mussels and I left the restaurant, completely satisfied. The food offerings were well priced and served/plated beautifully. The restrooms were well maintained. The only down-side in a large city setting is the lack of abundant street parking. A helpful hint is parking in Dartmouth and taking the Halifax Ferry. The restaurant is up one block and over two, so great walking distance.

So full of lobster and crab that the seafood oozed out the sides of the breading. It came with a choice of fries or house salad, and I chose the latter: crispy greens, carrots, radishes, tomatoes and a mild, creamy dressing. My spouse dined on the mussels and a side of truffle-Parmesan fries and thoroughly enjoyed his meal as well. He said the mussels were fresh, and our cheerful server confirmed fishermen had caught them not far from the Halifax shores. Since we ate between lunch and dinner, only two other parties atein the restaurant and maybe one or two others sat at the bar. Overall, prices were reasonable and the restaurant was well worth the visit. A lovely experience indeed.

The location is befitting that of a lunch joint, and I like that they're sticking it to the likes of Subway which is next door in this little strip mall on Robie Street. It's a pretty casual spot with the main counter and open kitchen running the length of the back of the restaurant. Mismatched chairs and tables sit somewhere in the 30s, mostly at two-person tables for the lunch crowd. After surveying the menu above the counter, pictures and prices included, I inquired about the "half and half" plate I had read about online and saw above me. It came highly recommended and came with two proteins, beef and their chicken shawarma. It wasn't cheap for lunch at nearly $14, but the one being made in front of me for someone else looked hefty and well worth so I went with it, grabbing an iced tea from the cooler to have while I waited. With there only being a trickle of other customers at this point, my order was soon called out and I went back up to grab it and upon seeing it knew that my first meal of the day would keep me full for a while. It was loaded with strips of shredded beef and onions, the chicken was surprisingly hunks of meat instead of shaved pieces of meat, curry rice, salad, pita, hummus and tzatziki. The shawarma was a different take than I'm used to but it was definitely good, being tender and moist and with a light flavour from the marinade. The beef wasn't quite as good unfortunately, and although it had great browning and a big garlicky hit, some bits were over cooked and a bit chewy. The salad was like a Lebanese version of a garden salad with big pieces of tomato, cucumber, celery, green pepper, onion, pickled beets and lettuce, with a moderate dose of parsley and a light dressing. Everything was fresh and crispy, even the lettuce for being well out of season, and the dressing added a nice bit of zip to it. While it wasn't ground breaking, the curry rice was a vibrant yellow and had a enjoyable curry flavour, minus the spice typically associated with curried dishes. I really enjoyed the tzatziki, which had a noticeable cucumber flavour to it, which is a refreshing contrast to the blander store-bought versions I'm used to. The hummus wasn't as much up my alley as it wasn't as smooth as I like my hummus to be, but it did carry on the garlic-heavy theme of this place, which I didn't mind. Paying (in cash, as you must) on my way out, I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and found myself wishing that other places in the city had meals like this one.
