First time at recess, coffee and bakery while visiting Black Mountain. The menu sounded delicious as well as the baked items. They said they were out of a few baked items, but I chose the lavender blueberry pastry. It was delicious! For coffee, I ordered a carrot cake latte. It was good, but I would've liked if it had a little bit more sweet spiciness to it. I loved the vibe of the place it reminded me of my childhood. Will definitely be back!

What a cute spot! Upon walking up, there is a line out of the door, so I knew this place was going to be good! I got 4 different pastries - the baklava danish, chocolate croissant, blueberry and lavender eclair, and the strawberry and lemon tartlet. Aesthetically, these are beautiful. You almost feel bad eating them! I will say they have their croissant dough down pat, seriously so good. My one downside is that any specialty pastry was (to me) extremely sweet, even though I have a very big sweet tooth. I thought the chocolate croissant was perfect in all its simplicity. The other pastries, because they had so much going on, were very sweet. I could only take a bite or two without feeling overwhelmed. Price wise, they're pretty expensive. I paid about $28 for the four that I got, but the quality is definitely worth it. I can't wait to come back and try some of their bread, sandwiches and coffee!

This bakery is so beautiful in every way. The pastries are works of art and the interior is elevated and cozy with an intentional, unique design concept. I would come back to this town just to come here and support this amazing bakery. I can't recommend enough!!

My friend told me about this place and we decided to check it out. It was super fun! I loved the theme! We came towards the end of their day, so they didn't have a complete selection of goodies, but what I had was delicious! I got the carrot cake seasonal drink, and it was a bit too cinnamon-y for me. I was hoping for a variety of carrot cake spices instead. Next time we are that way, I would love to try something else!

Loved my time here, a great place to work or bring kids (they have a playground in the patio area). Really unique pastries, for example I got the mango sticky rice pandan croissant - it was flaky and seemed liked it had marshmallow fluff on the top. I had a coconut syrup cappuccino which was really tasty. Would love to come back and try their breads and other unique pastries!

Everything you want from a mountain town coffee shop. Incredible interior setting, elite food options, and solid coffee. Never paid so much for a bakery item, but it was honestly worth it. You can tell this is the most popular coffee spot in town but they have a lot of space to accommodate the demand. Absolutely worth stopping in if you're in Black Mountain.

It was a chilly morning, so we sought a hot coffee stop in Black Mountain. I was excited to order a specialty latte made with apple. I greatly anticipated a fun Autumn flavor. The workers were pleasant, & the coffee shop had a great vibe. Unfortunately my latte did not deliver on flavor. I could just taste coffee, milk, & a sprinkling of cinnamon on top. So I was a little disappointed. Still Recess was decent, it just was not excellent.

This is a great themed coffee shop with bakery. The staff are incredibly nice. The coffee is really good and local. The baked goods are very well done and prepared. Really love the macadamia nut cookie and the olive bread. Blackberry cobbler focaccia bread is out of this world. I'll be back here.

I have been coming to Recess at least once a month since it opened. I thoroughly enjoy the new pastries that rotate each month. They are usually pretty busy and on multiple occasions have sold out by the time I get there. Since I drive about an hour one way, I will usually call ahead and ask them to hold the pastries for me. The coffee & matcha are OK, but not my favorite. It is their pastries, which are beautifully presented and very delicious, that make the trip well worth it. The atmosphere (if you can come on a slow day) is very nice. Otherwise it's rather chaotic (for me) in a small place. Overall, highly suggest visiting and grabbing a pastry, just make sure you come early or on a weekday if you don't like crowded spaces.

Updating based on customer service alone as I was not able to make it back in for another try before leaving town. Great customer service! The owner reached out to me about my experience and wanted to make it right... I know this would have been done if I were eating in the cafe and able to say something at the time. They were genuine and I could tell they really care about their products and customers' experiences. I do plan to go back when I find myself in town again and I suspect there will be a following great review based on my second try of their food and drink.

    Great coffee shop!

We love this place. We live in Hendersonville but routinely make the trek to black mountain just to get some coffee and amazing baked goods. The staff is so friendly providing excellent service and the environment is so nostalgic and cozy. We love recess and will be back this coming weekend

We would have never known about it, except after dining at the Red Rocker restaurant. The grounds are lovely and are shaded with large trees and have seating underneath them. There's also an outside patio where customers can enjoy their food. We opted for the seating inside and I had a delicious everything bagel with lox, cream cheese and capers. Dave had eggs, sausage and cheese on an everything bagel too. There was a continuous line of customers buying bakery stuff and getting coffee. The atmosphere is so homey and pleasant that it a pleasure to eat there.

While some of their pastries look decent, there is something about their Viennoiserie (laminated dough) products that they just seem to not understand. Every one of their croissants I've tried were underproved, which causes an undesirable internal texture that is dense and not open and light like croissants are supposed to be. They are also very "bread like", which shows that they are losing control of the temperature of the dough and butter during the lamination process. This causes the butter to melt into the dough, rather than keeping the intended layers. This is what causes the crumb of the croissant to be more bread like, rather than the light honeycomb structure you find in a well-crafted croissant. Their other products, assorted buns, cinnamon rolls, etc., look decent, but I haven't tried much of those as they aren't really what I enjoy. I hope at some point they can dial in their understanding of the laminated dough process as it would only elevate and improve what they offer. However, they seem to be busy, so they may be fine with delivering a lower quality product in that department. I also understand that my perspective may be different than the average customer as I'm a professional pastry chef and consultant. I'm not sharing this review to be negative, but to give an honest opinion that may spark this establishment to look deeper into their process and find ways to offer even more to their customers.

Not like the typical artificial banana flavoring you'd find in a candy. It was sweetened just enough and topped with little vanilla wafer pieces. We were only inside for a short period of time, but this was a really cute place with comfy seating and a calm, quiet vibe. Staff were friendly and efficient. The only thing that could have made my drink better would have been more ice, but then I would have less of my delicious beverage, so I can't really complain.

We arrived at around 7:15 am and were greeted by two regulars hanging out front with their dogs, which meant that Mrs. K. got her morning dog fix before we even made it inside. That set a great tone for a good day. The welcome inside was warm in the small town way that feels genuine instead of forced, just easy smiles and a quick hello as I ordered. It was rather quiet when we arrived but the folks seemed to start pouring in as we sipped our coffees. My cortado was excellent even if it was in a paper cup. Mrs. K. was happy with her latte which is the proper test. We lingered a bit, enjoying the quiet and watching Black Mountain wake up around us before getting back on the road. A great little stop just off I-40 and a perfect start for the day. Five stars! [Review 540 of 2026 - 4635 in North Carolina - 25722 overall]

I also found out they have a CSA that delivers right to my home which makes for least waste and need to use the corporate grocery store so often. My doctor said I aged just like any other human but that my physical fitness and condition was that of someone 25 years younger than me. At that time, I didn't know what 'outlier' meant so I called him a mammogram. He just looked at me confused, which was the plan. With that out of the way, this is more of a bread place than a bagel place. If I had gone here for bread (even though a bagel is bread), I likely would have given it 5 Stars. But I was here for a bagel. They didn't have plain or poppy so I got a Toasted Sesame bagel. I did get it toasted but it was literally called a Toasted Sesame. It was okay. The cookies were also good not great. I still could have maybe given a 4 thanks to great service, a cool vibe, outdoor seating, and impeccable cleanliness but instead of the bagel being $2 and change, they charge another $2 for service (buttering the bagel). So, how a bagel and a small bag of three cookies, it was $9 after leaving a $1 tip. Other negatives are no option for a paper receipt and no bathroom. He did offer to guide me through the kitchen to the employee bathroom but that would be awkward. If you're local and seeking amazing bread options, you will probably love it. If you're on a road trip on I-40 and want a bagel and a bathroom, it ain't the place.
