My daughter's laptop developed a problem where it couldn't find the hard drive (major concern with losing all of her files!). I took it to Paul and he took the time to remove the hard drive and test it spearately from the computer, as well as using one of his drives in the laptop. He couldn't find any problems, but when he put the hard drive back in the computer it worked! He noted that sometimes computers get strange intermittant failures and that this was likely what happened. He also took the time to make suggestions on ways to backup the data as well as make the laptop run faster (another problem my daughter had been experiencing). Despite the time that he spent Paul refused any payment since he hadn't had to replace any parts. As he said, he'd rather treat people the way he would want to be treated. Paul is the most honest businessman I have encountered in a long time. I spilled coffee on my HP laptop and he said it was most likely the motherboard. When I went to his shop, he was unable to locat the part at a US vendor at a reasonable price. The foreign parts had a limited warranty and would take a while to come. He advised that the price of the part from HP was not worth it and I should buy a new machine. He even took out the hard drive so I can use it to recover my docs. I had a monitor that was malfunctioning. After calling around, I decided to give Paul a try. At first, I could not get anybody to answer my knock on the front door (his shop is a shed in his back yard). Luckily, just as I was getting ready to give up, I saw a customer exit from the gate to the left of his house. The customer directed me to Paul's workshop, which is in his backyard. Paul tested my monitor and determined that it was basically not worth the repair cost. I told him it was still under warranty and the company had asked for a repair estimate before they honored the warranty. Paul provided me with an estimated cost and included a detailed diagnosis of the problem. Amazingly, he did all of this work without asking for compensation. But before I had the chance to update my review, he made it clear that the condition of my refund was that I remove the "poor" review. Not only that, but he wanted me to sign a contract agreement, stating I would remove the review. Probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard! Obviously I declined. My review is still up, and Recom Computers still has my money. Very opinionated person who will try his best to fix your problem... but you have to listen to his rantings about various things including how much you paid for your equipment (not very helpful after-the-fact). Seems like an honest and knowledgeable guy but with rough social skills which translate into a borderline consumer experience. He tried to fix the laptop problem but was ultimately unable to... he spent a lot of time on it so I paid him what he asked... but I ended up with nothing but an earful and a (still) broken laptop. First, I have to be honest, even with the thought of upsetting Paul. I, like a couple of those with negative reviews, found him a bit pugnacious. That's the perfect word. Somewhat condescending as far as I was concerned. I did not represent a high-paying client, that's for sure since I contacted him several months ago and then a few weeks ago to purchase a used laptop. What he sold me, after I questioned their reputation, was an Acer that I am very happy with. My first DOS desktop, (my first computer was a KayPro, remember those :-)) one I was happy with back in the day, was a new Acer until it needed repairs & I discovered certain aspects of it, at least then, were proprietary. When I questioned him as to the laptop, admittedly no big money-maker for him, Paul seemed to think their "rep" wasn't worth long discussion & at fist this bothered me, he seemed to sidd-step the question, however I did some more research & bought the laptop. Took it home & used it, plugging in the charger. Several days later the battery was down to 10% & the charger wouldn't function unless I held it in just the right position. I phoned Paul, who I did find a bit abrasive in his strong assumption I had done something wrong, perhaps plugging the charger into the computer port in a way that damaged it. Because the charger tip moved around a bit I incorrectly assumed the port, a costly & time consuming repair, would have to be replaced. I really needed to use the computer. At first Paul said I'd have to wait a while, that it was fine when we tried it in his shop, etc. However he said if I made it fast I could drop it off. I admit I was very upset & began siding with the 2 reviewers who said he had no social skills & disdained those without his "savvy." Ran the laptop over to him as quickly as I could, leaving for how long & at what expense I didn't know. Not 10 minutes later he phoned, telling me it wasn't the computer port but rather the charger's female connection. To come right back. He gave me a new charger gratis at considerable expense to himself & I was on my way, my Acer functioning beautifully since he gave me the charger. I admit he surprised the hell out of me! Was a Good Guy after all. Perhaps one has to "learn" how to deal with him? I recommend Paul. He knows his stuff, but if you're contradictory be prepared for an argument or, in my case at first, some attitude! But after all this, an Honest 5 Stars in my book. Paul's business card describes him as a "Computer Geek". It should read "Computer Jerk". He is totally obnoxious and just can't keep himself from treating clients with disdain becausehe doesn't see them as computer savy as he is. An extended family member brought him over with a new computer he had built. As a professional, he was supposed to move all the files from the old hard drive to the new one. He did not tell me he would need to install software separately and took it upon himself to grab the first update he found, which was six years old. Since the incorrect software was used, the files were not attached after the move. It was necessary to hire someone else to do the job correctly. I have never dealt with such a rude business person. The scanner also failed to operate after the installation and when we phoned him he told us it was too old to work with the new system. I contacted Paul on the recommendation of a friend and he was very responsive. My only regret is not reaching him before I ran a factory reset because my contacts with Microsoft chat and Best Buy Geek Squad had driven me to the point of desperation. Since I had no backup I lost all of my data. Paul assured me that he would have been able to save my data (but not after the factory reset) even thought my laptop would not do system repair or restore. What Paul was able to do was configure my system and set me up to go forward and gave me good tips. I ran into further problems the next day not being albe to access my wireless router. Paul came over right away but was not able to resolve that issue. During the process my computer developed another problem that would not resond to system restore. Paul suggested replacing the hard drive. He was so efficient that it was done the next morning when I called to let him know I just realized I had an extended warrenty with Dell! Paul already did the work and reconfigured my computor / ready to go. Paul understood my frustration and modified his fee which I greatly appreciated. So my recommendation is # 1 if you have a problem with your computer, ask yourself if you have a warrenty. # 2 if not , go straight to Paul. PS I still had to deal with the wireless access issue that persisted. I had to go to Netgear to resolve that issue. They charge a fee if you are out of warrenty and for me to be back up on wireless, it was worth it. PPS use an external drive to save your data. Mine has been sitting in an unopened box for 3 years because I did not think I had anything so important. Very disappointing experience. My Outlook crashed and I called Paul to see if he could retrieve my emails/contacts. My regular computer guy was unavailable, so I was in a jam. End of the day, I was sold a new computer that may have been built in his garage - disk driver sounds like a chainsaw. When I complained, I was told that "yeah, those drives spin at a very high rate." WTF! This is obviously problematic in a business setting if I can't talk on the phone and read/burn disks at the same time. The computer is filled with bugs (many not Paul's fault), but no support to work out. I had problems with the new Outlook, Paul's only suggestion was to contact Microsoft support. Also, he put the "Home Office" version of Microsoft on my business computer, so not an ideal situation. You will find Paul to be very defensive and argumentative when questions are raised. After applying my limited troubleshooting skills to no avail, I recognized that I needed some technical help. A few days ago I dropped my laptop and it wouldnt start windows after that. I found Recom on Yelp and due to all the fantastic reviews, I contacted Paul. He agreed to see me right away and I brought my laptop to him. He started it up and magically it loaded windows! I had to agree with him when he said he has great computer karma. In short, our meeting lasted about an hour. He explained my options very clearly (w/o making me feel stupid like these guys so often do) and gave me some great advice. He even gave me a free program for batch editing photos - something I have been needing for so long. He didn't charge me for the meeting because he didn't do any actual work he said. Boy am I glad to have found Paul through Yelp . Basically, my laptop was failing to boot into Windows and I had never backed up my hard drive before. When I met with Paul, he quickly figured out that my internal hard drive had failed so he told me to pick up a couple parts from a Fry's nearby and had me up and running the next day with my original data files restored on a backup external drive. He even helped me get the best deals I could on really short notice. Therefore, I have to concur with all the other reviews that Paul provides an honest and extremely professional customer service experience. I used Paul about 4 years ago to help us with a Mac laptop that had juice spilled all over it. He was able to recover all of our data for us, was quick and professional so when my work laptop crashed on me today, I knew who to call. Although I admit, I thought I'd call Dell since the laptop is under warranty, but after an hour on the phone with customer service, I knew I needed Paul's help.
