Like most sit-down spots in BGC, the service was lovely -- smiles all around, not a single complaint. But let me drop a PSA for any future diners: these folks have Olympic-level upselling skills. You think you're just getting a drink? Boom -- now it's a refillable iced tea. You order a meal? Suddenly, it comes with a "highly recommended" upgrade. They could probably convince you to add an appetizer to your water. Anyway, I went with the pork tocino breakfast (because I'm not about to skip protein) and added caramel walnut banana pancakes -- because self-care. The tocino and garlic fried rice were so good I had to tap out before even touching the pancakes, so I boxed them to go. Fast-forward a few hours: I'm ready for my pancake moment. I butter them up, drizzle that caramel sauce, take a bite -- and immediately go, "Wait... why does this taste... meaty?" After a few detective bites, I realized there was definitely some kind of cross-contact situation happening. Somewhere, a rogue spatula betrayed me. I sadly retired the pancakes to the trash. Honestly, aside from the unexpected meat-flavored dessert, it was still a decent experience and a solid kickoff to my BGC trip. Lesson learned though: in Manila, even your pancakes might come with a little extra protein. Overall, I'm giving the tocino breakfast a 4.5, the banana pancakes a 2 (1 for looks and the other 2 for effort), service a 4 so I feel a solid 3.5. I've been here a few times already, but stepping inside its huge hip maze of interiors never ceases to excite me. I'm not sure if it's the thrill of choosing what meal to try next or just the nice aesthetic of literally everything, that excites me more. On my first visit, I made sure to first try the super popular fried chicken from Bad Bird. As a big fan Southern-style fried chicken, I wasn't disappointed. The crispy skin had a yummy seasoning that's new to the palette, very different compared to my other favorites, such as the Chickenjoy from Jollibee and the Pan Fried Chicken from Pancake House. And there's something about their side dishes that just completes the whole meal. The corn on the cob with bonito flakes, sweet and umami flavors melting in your mouth, was to die for. The coleslaw provided a nice acidic break from the saltiness of the chicken. The meal was a fun experience itself. Just the other day, I tried the Pastrami on Rye from Mr. Delicious and it was monstrous--just plain impressive in terms of size. I didn't even attempt to bite on the entire stack, using my fork and knife like a pretentious chick on a first date instead. Each bite off the monster-wich was packed with so many different flavors, though the pastrami still easily emerges as the hero of the dish. And let's not get started on the sweet potato chips. I'm not a big sweet potato-lover, but damn, the portion was more than satisfying. If there's anything I'd like modified, I just wish there was a bit more of the veggie pickles to cut through all the meat and fat. For now, I'll end this review right here. Ginataang Laing (₱225) - This Filipino comfort dish of taro leaves and pork bits cooked in coconut milk and topped with shrimp and siling labuya (small, fiery chili pepper cultivar) was richly creamy, slightly spicy and deeply aromatic. 3-PC Chicken Barbecue (₱345) - This is Aristocrat's iconic dish, often cited as the flagship meal of the legendary Manila-based establishment. Their famous Chicken Barbecue is composed of three pieces of chicken (typically drumsticks and/or leg/thigh cuts) that are marinated, skewered, and grilled to a tender, juicy, and smoky finish. Served with Java Rice (a bright yellow-orange-coloured, savoury rice) and homemade Atsara (a Filipino pickled dish made from grated unripe green papaya) both of which bring out the tastiness of the smoky chicken. Pork Barbecue (₱300) - Two sticks of tender, marinated pork skewers grilled to perfection, typically served with Java Rice and Atsara. Dalyn replaced the Java Rice for white rice to complement the sweet, smoky bites of pork. Fresh Green Mango Shake (₱180) - My shake of fresh succulent green mango fruit blended with light syrup and crushed ice was a perfect balance of tangy and sweet - YUM!
