There's a reason why this place gets five stars and that is the fact that they'll take almost anything and you are in and out in minutes. If you're home owner like me, odds are you have years of spray paint, canned paint and numerous other chemicals aging in your garage? Like so many yelpers have already mentioned, you do need to make an appointment which is not at all difficult. I actually called in the morning on a weekday and got an appointment within three hours. The number to call is 512-974-4343. On my visit I brought all kinds of paint, fuel additive, cleaning agents, lubricants, and pesticides. To be honest, I thought they were going to charge me something for this collection of environmentally damaging products, but I offloaded everything onto their carts in a matter of minutes and was on my way. This is the last round up for items that don't work or need to be recycled responsibly. Post COVID, I'm not happy that you still have to schedule an appointment to drop off things here. I was there at 12:30 today and the place was pretty much dead. You can make next day appointments online but same day appointments have to be called in. There's a number for that just in case you need it It's 512-974-4343. File that number away somewhere because 311 will give you the number for a totally worthless recording that you have to listen through to get this number. The workers here are very nice and polite. They go about their work efficiently and helpfully offer assistance unloading your vehicle. Really super folks. Some things to note: if you still have CRT TVs lying around your house you can bring them here and recycle them for free. Most other places want money to do that. Also they recycle and blend their own paint and have three colors that you can get totally free! If you don't have a picky HOA or one of your colors can match up, you don't have to pay for paint. I would recommend approaching from the Burleson Road side because otherwise you'll have to do a u-turn on Business Center Drive to enter. Last but not least, I know this place isn't convenient, but do the right thing and don't just chunk it in the garbage can. Recycle responsibly. read more

Yall, this is such a awesome place to have available to Austin and Travis county residents. The appointment requirement is a bit of an inconvenience if you are like me and get sudden spurts of motivation. but with a little bit of planning, this place is amazing. they are well staffed with very friendly and helpful people. it odd a very efficient process that will get you out of there in no time! I love the convenience of having this place close by. Not only am I able to drop off brush and packing supplies boxes and just a host of recyclables. They have free paint and pesticides and just general things you often need around your home. Its always quick for me to get in and out and its never an unpleasant experience. This is a well organized recycling center.  Checking in for your appointment is easy; you are directed to follow the painted line to the type of item you are recycling. If you have multiple categories of items, you'll go thru the line additional times. Only thing to be wary of is the Styrofoam drop off area because there's no clear traffic pattern/parking. I find the employees to be polite and helpful. I encourage Austin residents to take advantage of this free recycling of your hazardous items, electronics, and other things our single stream regular recycling cannot accept. read more

The staff here is SO kind and helpful! We arrived one afternoon to pickup some of their available free mulch, but were unaware an appointment was needed. The man at the gate was still kind enough to allow us in, and explained how it worked. He gave us a flyer with information to schedule an appointment for next time. We went online to schedule, and it was not very clear what to do, because nowhere online does it mention scheduling to pickup, only to drop off. But if you continue through you'll find the correct place to schedule. We arrived for our appointment and were greeted just as kindly again! The man at the gate even gave our dogs cookies while we checked in! I highly recommend their recycling services! The area is clean and well kept, easy to navigate, and get in and out of! read more

I think this place is an EXCELLENT public service. I tend to come out every 6 months or so after we've gathered up enough stuff to make the trip to South Austin. Incredibly hard-working staff here with a sense of community, and very caring and careful. :) I had a minor chemical burn while dropping off a peroxide chemical product due to a hole in my gloves - my fault for missing it - and Cain lead me to the sink in the back and they were very thorough rinsing off my hands until the burning sensation had stopped. Thanks to the household hazardous waste folks for that! Today aside, the staff have always been very patient with my questions about what they can accept and where it goes, and it's always lovely to have a conversation with them. The staff here have an incredible combination of doing a manual labor job outdoors in this infamous Texas heat while also being very personable while their neighbors bring them all manner of things to dispose of in one manner or another. :) read more

Recycling in our COVID world has brought some changes to the R&R Center, but after bringing in a variety of problematic waste yesterday, I can assert that these folks are still doing a fantastic job. I can't really change anything about my original review, it's all the same. With the current pandemic, you need to make an appointment, but otherwise the experience was just about as easy as you can imagine. I made my appointment online, got a confirmation email promptly and that was that. Our tax dollars at work in the best way imaginable. read more

Me: Okie dokie. *Followed the line, stopped at the 'stop here' sign and turned my engine off per the other sign's instruction* Collection attendant: Watchu got? Me: Used glycol, engine coolant. Collection attendant: Could you please open the hatch? Me: Sure can! *I unlatched my seatbelt, stepped out of my SUV and opened the hatch. The collection attendant grabbed all 4 containers then I closed the hatch* Collection attendant: Have a good rest of your day. Me: You too, thanks! *Got back into my noble steed, fired up my engine, latched on my seatbelt and drove straight out of the facility* All of that action took less than 5 minutes. The cost is Free.99 at the facility but taxpayers actually pay for this service through our county taxes. The facility isn't as clean and organized as other ones I've been to nationally but they work with what they got. Other than that, an over all thumbs up. I'm sure I'll make use of my tax paid service again in the fairly near future and if you have any potentially hazardous chemicals or liquids you need to dispose of, you should utilize this facility too. Don't dump that stuff in the garbage bin because it will seep/spill out of the container and eventually into our aquifer(s) which our drinking water comes from. It's true. read more

The people who work there are efficient, patient, and helpful. It's well organized, too, and there are signs and colored lines showing you where to drop off different categories of items. This place is great! (Other then being a 30 minute drive for me.) I drove up, audibly gave the man at the booth my zip code, then you follow the colored lines to different places. I had household stuff (weed killer, paint, chemicals) and drove under the canopy. They roll a cart over to meet you and you drop your stuff on it. Done, easy as that. I didn't shop around so I can't review the rest of the place, but very easy drop off procedure. read more

6 years ago I bought an old 40's home and the wanna-be entrepreneur seller was kind enough to to leave a 55 gallon blue plastic drum of unidentified goo in the garden and several hundred various paint cans (and other identifiable liquids) in the garage. When I moved in, I threw all my old boxes of crap into the one-car garage and pretty much forgot about entering that space... except that I knew that I'd need to clean it one day... which is perfect for creating that ever-present low-level subconscious stress. Two weeks ago, some close friends insisted on helping me clean it out... and over a couple of days, we did. Made the garage sale pile, the recycle pile, and the city dump pile. But the old chemicals didn't seem to fit in any of those. So I called my new best friend... 311 I'm going to write a review on 311... I LOVE them. You can ask them anything. I was like, "hey, I have all these old unknown chemical... what do I do?" And they gave me the contact info, address, and hours for the Household Hazardous Waste Facility. I loaded up my truck headed their way (be sure to call first... they are rarely open and have weird hours) and dropped off 6 years of stress. All they asked was my zip code so as to verify that I was in Travis county and that it was personal property (not commercial). I wish I had done this years ago... I feel like a new man. And they even took my old Roomba battery... awesome. read more

I really thought I would be the ONLY person to write a review. Seeing that I will join a few others, I don't feel like SUCH a dork...only a small one. I drove off and said, wow..."that was too easy." My home had previous owners who were "nice enough" to leave all their old paint in the garage. Yes! I totally want to paint my new house EXACTLY like you did. Almost 4 years later on top of all my paint cans I decided...they gotta go! HHWF web page was informative, easy to navigate, and easy to find. Where else can you take all your old paint, batteries, CFLs, oil, and that can of stuff you forgot what it was for disposal? You can't take a ton of stuff, and there are some residency requirements. It's a much needed service. read more

A huge tree fell in our backyard. I was able to cut it up with help from my family but had no idea to do with the wood. It was a hackberry so using it for bbq was out. I did a little research and found out that I could take it to Austin Resource Recovery. Loaded up the trucks and drove over there. A gentlemen met us as we pulled in asked for our address he then showed us where to go to drop off the brush. Supercool! We had just missed bulk brush pick up so either I would of had to pay someone to haul this off or it would of sat in my back yard until brush pick up. If you have a bunch of electronics, paint, etc.. they take that stuff too. If you go to their website they tell you what you can take. At least our taxpayer money is being utilized in a useful way. BTW they recycle the paint and make new paint that they will give to you. I preface this review by stating that the average American generates a good quantity of hazardous waste every year. In my case I had this car battery lying around my trunk and it was starting to eat a hole in my car. Needless to say I was quite happy when I saw that these folks would accept my battery so long as I could say I lived in Travis county. Indeed when I arrived there all they asked me for was my zip code. Then they thanked me and moved on. What I loved about being here was seeing beautiful average American families with trunk loads of toxic waste smiling and laughing as their cars lined up. There must be some sort of commentary to be made here about how our innocent, hard-working, proper, church-going lifestyle is in fact killing the planet and producing day glow green toxic ooze. Yes this is a place to take your little ones so they can see Austins most dangerous chemicals pile up toward the sky. After I disposed of the battery, it was as though they were about to release a great burden. Indeed the freedom from that nasty battery has given me a new sense of liberation, and hope as I know that it shall be made useful again. I shared some stories with some other wasteful human beings and then went on my merry way lest I hold up the line. As I pulled out past the jersey barriers constructed from crushed cans I began to think of "yesterday" and a tear welled up in my eye. So why not five? Well they're only open Tues and Wednesday and they are on the other end of town from where I am. UPDATE: Their hours have recently expanded. This is truly awesome. Still Tues and Wed, but now they added the first saturday of every month. They also have an outreach plan whereby they vist north Austin every now and then just to make things right. I got rid of old gasoline, used motor oil, old paint and other misc chemicals. and they thanked me for it. quick and easy. don't dump that stuff down the drain or send it out in the regular trash. read more

I'm not sure what it is about this place, but it seems like such a fun place to work. Everyone is happy, has a spring in their step, and are happy to help! Probably a great place for an artist to work, seeing how much free supplies would come in daily. I have been putting off running over here for well.. 10 yrs I guess. That is how old the paint from the original owner of my home sat in the garage. Along with that, I had accumulated old pesticide, car detailing stuff that had long gone bad as well as a bottle of stuff that I had no idea what it was. I was always conscientious enough not to chuck it into the regular garbage, so stuff just gathered and accumulated and I procrastinated in doing something. I often wondered what to do with the stuff and constantly noticed that the Hazardous Waste Facility was not that far from me. So, on a pouring rainy day, I ventured the few miles out to the facility. Upon arrival, I was motioned to the drive through area. Quickly, politely and efficiently my stuff was removed from the back of my SUV and put on a cart. There were loads of folks, sorting stuff into containers and going about their business like a swarm of busy bees. Once they were finished, I was presented with a brand spanking new reusable grocery bag. The entire process was over in less than five minutes. What a great Austin establishment. read more
