Waste Management - Bad truck, bad tie down that lead to trash falling out in a National Park!

Yes, I'm really writing a review about the garbage company! Lol I've lived in Cobblestone Farms…read morefor several years - the only issue I have ever had was one billing error. That is until yesterday. My normal garbage pickup day, the truck came & picked up my garbage as usual, but when I returned home from work - no garbage can. I called in & was told the automated arm on the truck can occasionally lose its grip on the can when dumping the trash in the truck. Oops! They not only picked up my trash, they also picked up my can. (I miss the days before these silly wheeled cans when real people came by!) I called in & the rep was friendly, helpful, explained what most likely happened. They are dispatching a replacement container tomorrow. I would have rated 5 stars if their hold time was shorter. The few times I've needed to call in (set-up, bill error, and missing can) the hold time runs around 5 to 15 minutes to reach an agent. At least the agents are helpful when you finally get to one. Overall, a good company to have. Expensive, but good.

Now it just me and my wife so we create literally one…read morekitchen garbage bag a week of garbage... all for the low low price of almost $500 a year ($122 a quarter). Thats $10 a bag for trash disposal. So, my wife tried cancelling our service. Used the website to do so because there are NO published phone numbers for WM to do that. The main number on their website tells you to us the FAQ page on the website and then hangs up on you... REALL CUSTOMER SERVICE! She followed the instruction from within our account, received a reply via email that they would be in contact within one business day. Eight days later I am getting involved after she recieved no contact to either the request for cancellation or billing inquiry she submitted. I sat on their "Chat" session for almost 30mins before getting someone that finally gave me a phone number to call regarding the problems we were having cancelling. After reaching a live person, which I was amazed, she began telling me about the "customer loyalty" discounts and options I qualified for, that she would be happy to give me. Three months free service and $40 off a quarter ($81 a quarter). I explained that loyal customers should be given the discounts without having to call in a request them or threaten cancellation. She blew that off because they were "such a big company that doing that would be hard to do". To which I responded, that because they were too big of a company they have made it almost impossible for a customer to reach a real person to get help. I declined her offer, at which point she pointed out that I had used their pick up two days prior (a week after requesting cancellation) and that because of this a refund for the next quarter was not possible. REALLY? You already have an upset customer because you make it so difficult to reach you about cancelling that you are going to double down? I then pointed out that our quarter ends on the 14th of the month that that it was only the 7th, and that they bill in advance for the next quarter which is why it is Aug. 1st on the billing. She also stated that there would be a $75 pick up charge of the cans since they use a third party company for that. I told her that I would be happy to drop them off this afternoon, to which she said that was not possible. Eventually, through logic and discussion, she was able to get a supervisor to refund the upcoming quarters charges, AND they waived the pick up fee. Now THAT is how you keep or win customers, by assisting them... not antagonizing them. If they had started out with helping me the way they ended the experience perhaps I might consider using WM down the road. But now, knowing how BIG of a company they are, I think I will find a smaller local company once my start-up company needs warrant refuse removal in the future.

Many didn't answer the phone and others were giving me prices that I knew were far below current market rates. But then I called Olgin Efune and a friendly receptionist transferred me to Brad Efune, the Co-President. Not only did he take time and handle my request professionally, but he gave me a price quote far more consistent with market rates than anyone else. Then he took my name, gave me his number, and told me to check in with him before stopping by to confirm whether rates had changed or not. I did this for two days before I could make it in and each day he answered his phone, greeting me by name, and relayed the current rates without the slightest appearance of frustration or inconvenience. This is the Co-President by the way, and I'm just an average Joe trying to bring in his scrap. I was pretty amazed. When I came in to the yard, everyone from the attendant at the truck scale to the guys who unloaded my truck at the material scales was friendly, helpful and even conversational. It was a hot day and I was even offered bottled water. When I went to the office to collect my payment I met Brad, who was busy about a room that reminded me more of a doctor's office than that of a recycling company. He still had time to talk to me and make sure I had been taken care of. Two other workers in the office were friendly toward me and oh yeah, and I was offered more cold bottled water. Basically this operation blew my mind. I've been to a number of recycling yards in the past and NONE of them have functioned this way. I was treated like a hotel guest and I wasn't ripped off on material prices. I honestly don't know why anyone would want to go to any other scrap yard in town.

When I called the person was very bubbly and pleasant. The employees made sure to guide me thru the recycling process as I am a "newby". I was so impressed by the size of the location including the enormous historic grain silos that I remember as a kid. I expected a scrapyard to be a filthy place and not one I wanted to go to. On the contrary, the yard was clean and very organized. Not what I expected at all. I was pleasantly surprised! I was offered water to drink, a very nice office to sit in while I received payment, a free pen and lots of fun and inviting conversation . The entire staff from beginning to end of my experience was superb. I will definitely be coming back here in the future if I have more scrap to sell and will refer others to come see the difference this scrapyard is from the rest!!

Of all things they will take computers and other electronic divices! If you knew how to fix computers(I do not) they have all the parts here, and the price is great. A really good thing that they do is hold events where you can bring all the items to a location for drop off and you do not even have to go to the Madison location. They do events for Schools , and the Boy Scouts, as well as other charites. I was glad to get rid of my things and not throw them in a land fill. Also batteries off all types. Easy to get to as well if you just want to drive over there.
