My go to shop for any "old" records I want. Staff is incredibly kind and selection changes often enough for me. I've been on the hunt for classic rock albums from Steely Dan, Boston, etc. I was able to basically find every Steely Dan album during one of their record sale days. That was a good day. This will be quick and to the point. First, the selection is outstanding. Some of the sections could be marked better, but I was able to find what I was looking for. The guy working there was great. Second, the music being played was entirely too loud. SO loud I had to turn off my hearing aids and be deaf. Third, If you are going to look in the bargain bins, be advised that all the covers in that section have been defaced with a black "X" in laundry pen. They are ruined. So, if you collect vinyl for both the music and the album cover, the bargain bin here will disappoint. I saw a dozen records in there that I would have bought if not for the marking. read more

I hate to be so critical, but upon multiple visits, I've determined this store is underwhelming and not worth venturing into. Recycled Records is primarily a used shop, but their used inventory is really picked over. Basic staples of record collecting are missing, and what's available in their bins are junky quality of bands that have come and gone (especially bands from the 80s). The four or five times I've been inside this store I have left disappointed and empty handed nearly every time. I'm not looking for 8 different beat up copies of Grand Funk Railroad, or Go West, or Quarterflash. Where's the used (or new) Led Zeppelin? Where are the Beatles? Check all that apply: Fleetwood Mac Grateful Dead David Bowie Black Sabbath AC/DC Pink Floyd Rolling Stones Eagles Admittingly, some of the above titles are in their shop for Record Store Day, but unless you're in line early day of, they're all gone within an hour or two of opening. That's the case of any record store on Record Store Day, so even that's not saying much. It's unfortunate that a city as big as Reno doesn't have a quality record store. It really says something when Barnes and Nobel or Best Buy have better quality and selection of in demand titles. They also have a mountain of used DVDs and BluRays, but it's 2021 and those DVDs are starting to look like VHS tapes did in 2006. Everyone's streaming today. All criticism aside, the staff were friendly and offered to assist me, which I highly valued. They were drinking beer in the afternoon when I came in, and I thought that was amusing. Relaxed atmosphere in the store for sure. Just wish they had more to offer. read more

Brought in a sizeable vintage vinyl record collection, including artists such as Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, and many other obscure, hard-to-find selections. Was offered $1 per album. They have no problem charging retail prices for vintage vinyl, they just don't want to pay you for them. Stay away. Not a reputable business. read more

It's a cool place with a LOT of records. There's not a ton of variety and you're not likely to find any tough-to-find items here. My impression is by the time it hits the shelves, it's pretty picked over. However, if you're looking just to flesh out your collection with some tried and true staples, this is a good place to pick those up at a decent price. I don't really understand the organization of the place- it doesn't always make sense. For example, you'll have a section called "Rolling Stones and Associated Acts" but then you'll have Mick Jagger or Ron Wood solo albums in different sections. Why they aren't considered associated is beyond me. Long story short, come with some time to spare to dig through and look for what you want. I almost never spend less than 30 minutes there. Parking can be tricky with the construction in the area so drive slowly leading up to the place or you'll miss it. Also, and this goes for just about any record store, if you're bringing things in for store credit, don't bother if it's not something relatively in demand. All your grandma's Dean Martin or Mormon Tabernacle Choir albums aren't likely to get you even a dollar in trade-in. read more

Very cool place. As sad as it is to say, it's been quite awhile since I've stopped in to an actual record store. As expected, CDs have the largest selection, but an impression selection of vinyls too. They also have cassettes! I spent the most time looking over the cassettes, didn't find anything I needed but if I lived in the area this is definitely a place I'd check back in often. Everyone was nice, things were neatly organized, and overall I just genuinely enjoyed the look and feel of the place. It's already on my list of where I will need to go when I am back in Reno! read more

This is definitely an overlooked review on my part. Since I bought a turntable last summer, we have been coming here pretty regularly to add to our LP collection and to trade in old CDs and DVDs to support our habit. We LOVE it here! They have managed to achieve that perfect business atmosphere that makes you just want to hang out as well as spend money. We rarely have any particular record in mind when we arrive; we just feel like digging in the crates and maybe finding something interesting. Recycled Records has enough inventory, and a good enough rotation of stock, that you can be a regular customer here and always find something new. Even Kid loves coming to the record store, and she always gets a prize from the counter for being good. The guys who work here are a bit, um, sharp, so a thin-skinned person might find his or herself a little overwhelmed, but they also know their shit, and if you ask them for help, they will happily give it. They are also quite generous with their trade-in policy, assuming, of course, you don't bring them crap. (And they will let you know if you bring them crap.) I give Recycled Records my highest recommendation, and I am glad to give them my continued business. read more

I'm not from Reno, but I visit here a couple of times a year. A trip to Recycled Records is always on the list, since I put my hifi back together about 2 years ago. I've bought a lot of records from here, usually grabbing about 10-15 each time I come around. The selection is deep, but that's not the best part. It's the knowledge of the staff. They really care about music and know their stuff regarding vinyl (that's what I'm coming in for, but WOW they do have a lot of CDs, tapes, etc.) Each time I walk through the door I get exactly what I hope for: a warm hello and then I'm left alone to browse at my own pace. Maybe once someone will ask if they can help me find something.... and it always seems to come at the right time, right when I am actually trying to find something in particular. It is everything a used record store should be: *Smells like an old bookstore *Playing vinyl that 9 times out of 10 you do not know the artist *Takes you back to a time when you actually cared about the album art *You can slide out the album, look for scratches/warpage, and some of the sleeves have the lyrics (remember before shazam, musixmatch, genius?) *You can come in and immerse yourself in music history The staff have always been cool to me and they do not care if you are 18 or 80. Amazing place! Awesome finds. Great prices. Weekly new meat section! Staff is fantastic and goes out of there way to help, crazy, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable beyond belief. The owner is also a fantastic man. It's local and in Midtown my favorite hang out. Quick story: I took a brand new Denon t in for them to look at it. Why because it had a German plug. Lord, I did research and was going to throw it out. But, the 450.00 turntable they figured out what it was and where to go to change the plug to USA. I was sent to electronic Repair Service in Midtown. I still was going to throw it away. The dude at recycled records told me look don't be stupid go see Randy. 20.00 out the door. So, if it wasn't for them I would have thrown out a 450.00 new turntable. read more

Ok we all know the jingle .........Recycled Records Doesn't Suck! They carry more than just second hand and limited addition records. DVD, tapes and CD are stacked up from floor to ceiling. Browsing is encouraged. Plus they buy old music in all formats and DVDs. Also you can score concert tickets at many local venues without paying a surcharge. I walked in with a mission. The Bee Gees Greatest Hits on vinyl. Yes this was an album from my youth but it was for my soon to be 16 year old great nephew (read budding hipster) who is very into the Bee Gees and vinyl. I asked for assistance and without any judgement I was taken to the B section of the records. Unfortunately, they did not have the double set I was looking for. The soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever was the only logistical substitution. They had specials boxes for mailing albums. Not a bad deal $14++ for the record and box! It might be the cheapest sweet sixteen gift I've ever purchased. If your in the market for used music and movies this is the place to go. Next time I'm in the market for concert ticket they will be my 1st stop! read more

The only thing that I go here for is to buy show tickets. The staff is always very friendly and seem to be having a good time doing what they do. The store is filled with old CD's, DVD's, and records. Buying music on antiquated formats has very little appeal to me. I know that most people would disagree and that's why I am glad that somewhere like this exist for them. It is certainly no Emoeba Records but it will do. One thing that I found to be a little discriminating when walking around was that the "Rap" CD's had a sign on the display which stated that there was no discs in the cases. The discs are kept behind the counter to prevent them from being stolen. Obviously everybody who reads that sign is going to think they are singling out one certain demographic as thieves. read more

All right, let's get one thing out of the way right now. My musical taste is as varied as my literary taste. I have music from Bach, Ella Fitzgerald and Adele to AFI, Greenday, and Linkin Park. I love all kinds of music. That being said, the best place I have found for my eclectic taste is Recycled Records. Often, I want to buy a cd but don't really know what I'm in the mood for. Where places like Best Buy and Barnes and Noble have the popular stuff that everyone already has, Recycled Records has those oddball discs that are right up my weird little alley. They always seem to have a few things that I just have to add to my cd library. While even they don't have all the weird things I'm looking for, the guys at Recycled Records are pretty close. If you happen to show up on a Sunday, you'll get to hear a tradition they've started. They play a musician who had died on that date. Reguardless of how awful they were, the musician gets his/her air time once more. All in all, I really do love coming into Recycled Records. I hope they're in town for a long time yet. read more

Really like this place. Went their for Record Store Day recently and despite the crowd, I thought they handled everything extremely well, all things considered. Was disappointed to only get two selections, but fully understood they had to for fairness reasons. I would give them five stars if they had a decent selection of new albums, but of course they are a used shop, so may be unrealistic on my part. I do stop by now and then and peruse the vinyl section which has expanded a lot over the last couple of years. Plenty of choices and I always find a album or two to buy. Friendly and fast service. Checked out Recycled Records today and ended up getting 6 cd's and 1 tape. This place is well organized and has a decent selection of each genre. I bought a movie soundtrack, pop, hip hop, seventies, rock, and sixties cd. The staff was very helpful and looked through the records and cd selection to help me find a Led Zeppelin cd that I've been searching for. The organization of this record store is interesting too, there's a dollar section, genre sections, and then compilation/discounted sections underneath. It looked like they had a decent amount of movies as well and they sell concert tickets. I was very happy with the quality of what I bought, all the cd's and tapes were in good condition, since they keep the copies are kept at the front and only the cases are out. read more

I was never really a huge Recycled Records shopper since it's not so much my cup o' tea when it comes to the music styles. I stopped by last week to sell 250+ CD's that I needed to get rid of. They went through them very quickly which was amazing since I was pressed for time. I appreciated not having to wait for an hour or having to go back hours later as is the norm with many resale clothing spots. They had a HUGE stack of CD's that they wanted to buy. I'd say about 100 of them but they ended up only taking 7. The rest were "scratched". At the end of the day I asked them if I could leave them there and they could try donate them or toss them because I didn't want to carry around the big heavy box anymore. They gladly accepted and said of course............. Well, I just saw today that Grassroots buys scratched CD's. I'm actually pretty angry that nobody at Recycled Records bothered to tell me that - I could have taken the ones they wouldn't buy to Grassroots and perhaps gotten more money for those rather than leaving them there. I suspect they didn't tell me because they were going to fix them and sell them. Hey - I'm all about profit but the way they went about it seems a bit fishy and immoral to me. read more

Pros: -best selection of 45s that I've seen in the area. -pretty large section of cheapie vinyl (see cons as well) to go with your normal used fare. -pricing is pretty fair, some WTF prices on old bootlegs which seem to be pointless these days. Cons: -depending on who is working yeah counter you either get great music knowledge or a bag of rocks -the cheapie vinyl has added Xs to the cover art... do not like, but I know why they do it. -no new releases except around RSD. this is a shame, especially for the new generation getting in to vinyl. read more

I stopped by Recycled Records during a brief trip to Reno while driving to California from Chicago. Though I arrived about a half hour before closing I quickly found a number of cds and vinyl and staff encouraged me to shop instead of chasing me out as it got later. Deep selection in a number of genres, well-organized and very good pricing. I was especially impressed with their jazz section. I picked up a Don Cherry disc long on my want list and some ECM titles as well. Props to the friendly and helpful staff as well. read more

I can't believe nobody has reviewed Recycled Records yet! This place is a Reno institution - I've been going there for years, though not so much now that I'm not a starving student anymore. Still, it's a Reno landmark, definitely worth a visit. This is one giant used-music store, which you will see as soon as you walk in. Floor-to-ceiling CD racks line the walls, along with huge CD bins throughout the store. New releases and hot items are located right up front at the counter, so if you're a regular visitor, you can check there first to see what's new. The rest of the CDs are loosely organized by alpha and band, but you may have to rifle through a few stacks to find what you want. Elsewhere in the store, there's a big vinyl section and a smaller cassette section. They also have DVDs and, I believe, some video games. You can listen to everything before you buy it (with a small charge to open a wrapped item), and the staff is pleasant and helpful and not at all indie-rock-snob - they will never throw you out of the store for asking about an unhip band. Of course, Recycled Records also takes your unwanted music. You get a better deal if you take store credit, but they'll also pay cash for your stuff, too. And, if your stuff is so lame that they don't even want to buy it (which does happen), you can just give it to them to decently bury, and at least you'll be rid of it. Music stores will come and go, but Recycled Records is here to stay. read more

If you're looking for vinyl any newer than the 80's and anything remotely popular you'd be better off searching on discogs or visiting a shop when you're in Sac. They do have some newer stuff on the wall behind the counter but its over-priced. Unfortunately they are very limited on hip-hop. Staff is nice and friendly, Parking is atrocious but that isn't not their fault. Just wish there was a better selection. read more

This is the best record store in town, and that's really not saying much. The service wasn't great, and the lighting sucked in there. It was hard to even read the titles of albums. But they did have cool merchandise, the vinyl section was pretty big and they had a lot of movies. Parking is garbage here, pretty much street only. I'll be back, but with reluctance. read more

They have moved to a new location, next to Swensen's (Shop for ice cream elsewhere). This is a great record store, and every time I have out of town guests, this is the place to go. I found several Jazz collections, not in print for years and years. One rare find was the original "San Francisco." For you vinyl freaks, this is the place. They even have a collection of turn tables to play the vinyl on: They should offer a special: free turn table when you buy 10 vinyl. I found a rare edition of Miles Davis with "Sketches of Spain." At the end of the day, this is that hidden resource in Reno everyone needs to experience. read more
