I have been coming here since I was a kid growing up in the 90's. I remember coming into the original store and throwing on some headphones and listening to Smokey Robinson and the Jackson 5. Count me as another fan from the Bay Area. I dug up several hard-to-find CDs mixed in (and priced) with the regular stock, and while I didn't pick up any records this trip it wasn't for lack of stuff I was interested in (particularly in the '80s/New Wave vinyl section). Also amused to see that pretty much every "Misc [letter]" section had at least one Twist record. Big props for the spine-out CD shelving, which beats the hell out of flipping through keeper cases when you're checking out every title in the store. If you are looking for a true Midtown experience, your journey will not be complete without a leisurely visit to Recycled Records. Go when you have lots of time to browse, because you can easily spend an hour just looking through one tiny part of their records if you are so inclined. The draw of this place is that you are looking for buried treasure, and you never know what you will find. This place is super relaxed and perfect for people who like to explore in a no pressure atmosphere. I find myself just sitting on the floor and carefully looking through records in their shelves because I would not want to accidentally miss a gem. Been going to Recycled for almost a decade now. Paul is a smart business man and finally moved shop #2 to midtown and frankly he has the best spot in town. The customer service is the best I've been around in any record store from LA's smaller DJ shops, Dallas's Bill's Records, NY's little hipster joints, and everyone shop in the Bay Area: Rasputins, Amoeba, and if still open all the places on Haight in SF, and Telegraph in Berkeley, and Dimples in Sac-Town. Eric, Mike, Skyler, Paul, and damn..great guy and forgot name with beard and tat by eye--are all beyond knowledgable in every genre of music. T For true collectors head to the back and shelves on the left for the Jazz section. There's some gems in there that I had kept meaning to pick up. If you're a CD collector of obscure, early pressings, Targets, Japan for USA or W. German for USA---look and you will find many. Hand's down--best in Reno and West Coast for USED RECORDS/CDs--from my experience. They keep a small collection of new stuff on the walls in back. Don't be scared to ask anyone there if you can check it out. Also--when trading in records or CD's. They're a business and have to re-sale your trade-ins--so don't expect $5 for a pristine Harry Belafonte Columbia 6-Eye or the typical stuff you can pick up at second hand stores for $2. They're not ignorant and are very in tune with market demands, and rare and collectibles. If something has been sitting for a couple months--make them a deal. The worst they can say is NO. read more

I have been coming to Recycled Records since they were at their old location on Keitzke Lane. They have a great selection of used CD's and vinyl and the store has a lot of personality. Unfortunately their prices have risen to the point that I'm better off shopping on Ebay and other online outlets now for old Vinyl. Not worth the 90 minute drive to get to the store any more. I want to support wood and plaster businesses, but I'm afraid doing business online gets me a lot more records for the money. Sorry guys! read more

All the used records are sealed in plastic so you can't see the condition. One time i asked if the new foo fighter's LP was in. He said he could order it. Oh really? its 2013 and so can i. They have no turntable to try a record before buying it. Or at least the one i saw was not actually for trying records? was it? read more

I go to Lake Tahoe for vacation time in the summer and now make a trip over the hill to Recycled Records a regular part of the journey. I jumped back on the vinyl bandwagon a few years back (and glad I did) and that's the only format I have purchased here, so I can't comment on CD's / DVD's, etc. I like this store because the vinyl is very well organised. The more popular artists separated (with some art work or log on many of the plastic tabs), and the more obscure grouped together by letter. I find the selection very good, and a lot less picked over than what I find at Amoeba and other stores in the Bay Area. The condition of the vinyl does vary so be sure to slide the record out of the sleeve before purchasing (although anyone purchasing used vinyl would be sure to do this I hope). Some of the items I checked out today looked pretty chewed up. They do guarantee against skips and scratches, but not surface noise. Today I dropped off 5 - albums and got $17 in credit. Not bad. I grabbed 6 more and was out the door for $21. Pretty good. I found some good stuff, including a Ry Cooder live at the Great American Music Hall in 1976 for 8$. Clean looking copy to, although I will take it home and give it a proper wash t before it goes on the TT. All in all, this is a very good used Record Store. If your in Reno, check it out. read more

I wasn't even looking for a record store but stumbled across this while killing a little time. What a great discovery. Found countless collectibles and bought a couple at very fair prices for good conditioned vinyl. Next problem was getting my buys back to Indy. A simple request and they packaged them up and I received them about a week later. Great place to spend a lot of nostalgic time for sure. This will be a regular stopping point in future trips to Reno. read more

Best record store in town, the guys who work there are super nice & very knowledgeable.

Very nice staff but when I went to donate my records they said they only accept rock, jazz and pop albums which was fine but there were about 20(out of 50) albums turned away despite all being within those genres. When I asked why, I was told they weren't familiar with those bands. read more

I visit my family once a year in Reno, and Recycled Records is my favorite place to go. I go there probably every other day when I'm in town to check out their "Fresh Meat" vinyl section, where you'll always find something obscure or interesting. Over the years I've found some great stuff. The last time I was there I got two Kate Bush Records. Other used finds include Orthrelm (noise metal insanity), Fields of the Nephilim (totally underrated '80s--90s goth band), Under the Big Black Sun by X (the owner gave it to me free because it was scratched, but hey, it still plays)...and countless others...Two of my favorite Coltrane records, "Coltrane's Sound," and "Giant Steps" I found here. I have actually had dreams about this place, no joke. I'm always looking forward to going back to see if I can find some obscure gem I've been looking for all my life. I wouldn't consider this a downside, but some might...they don't have tons of new records...what they have is mostly on the wall, and they are very selective about what they put up there, so if you're looking for the latest Beach House or Mac DeMarco or whatever, you probably won't find it. You will, however, find deep sections of soul, jazz, electronic, punk, indie, goth, new wave, and tons of other genres. It's a big store, and it's packed with other stuff too...CDs, DVDs, posters, banners, you name it. Staff are nice as long as you aren't a total tool, so just make sure you can hang. Usually when I buy stacks of records they give me a few for free or reduce the price, so that's super nice of them, A great store all around, and my number one go-to spot in Reno. read more

Wow. A diggers paradise. This was my first time in Reno, had a few hours to kill, so decided to seek out a record store, as I have been known to do in new places. Clerks were super friendly, I told them I had never been there before, and they gave me the quick tour, highlighting the more rare wax on the walls and the new arrivals in the back. So much good stuff, without the big city prices that you'd pay in LA or SF. Got a few OG pressings of some early Tom Waits, a few cherry James Brown LPs and a few other rare soul finds all at very reasonable prices. Also, the 45 bin in the back is chock full of good stuff and very reasonable at around $1 for most of the stuff in there. Folks were cool, staff was cool, and most importantly, they knew what they were talking about. Didn't get any pretentiousness or bad attitudes, just music lovers helping other music lovers. My brother came away with a few rare pieces of vinyl as well, at very fair prices. I hope I have another reason to visit Reno in the future, as I want to go back here. read more

I was horrified and saddened by my treatment today at Recycled Records. I cannot speak to their music sales but was hopeful when I was told over the phone that they could help me replace the needle on my turntable. It was not a simple cartridge replacement or I could have done it myself. On coming into the store, one employee set my turntable down on a pile of records and started working at trying to remove the old needle. I gestured for him to be a little more careful because one of the tiny nuts that held it on had fallen off. He ignored me and kept trying to wrestle it apart while saying that most are a cartridge and just pop off. Another man came over and thought he could work it out and when I pointed out the tiny part which was about to fall he ignored me and kept trying to force the needle off the arm. It was then that I noticed one of the two nuts was already missing and when I mentioned it I was told that it was never there! At this point they put my turntable back in the box I had brought, told me they couldn't help me and gave me a card for another business. Not only did they not help me, but they made things worse and were rude to me on top of it. This company is an institution in Reno and has been around as long as I can remember, but apparently customer care and service are not on their menu. The three men who treated me so poorly should be ashamed of themselves !! read more
