    Cowtown Kicker w/ tots
    Jamie J.

We found this place on our way home from long weekend trip. We decided to take a scenic route and drive until we got hungry. Well I am so very glad we got hungry when this was on our map b/c I'm already planning my next visit. The whole place just has a cool vibe. The decor definitely adds to the whole experience. There's so much to look at while you're waiting. It was a Tuesday afternoon after normal lunch hours so it wasn't very busy when we were there. Now to the part that really matters...the food!!! Hands down the burgers were some of the best I've had. I had the Cowtown Kicker with tots. The burger was cooked perfect and seasoned just right. I asked for the grilled jalapeños to be on the side. My sister had the big Hawaiian. I had to still a bite of hers too and it was equally as good with the Hawaiian sauce and grilled pineapple. Everything we had was great really. Can't wait to take a little road trip back to Baxter Springs to hang out here again.

Very delicious food cooked to order. Awesome French fries and a great cheese burger. The sweet tea is very tasty. Great customer service from the wait staff and a very cool environment of extra minutes to drive here from the highway.

Great burgers in an out of the way location! Fries were so-so but the tots were hot and fresh.

The big dean is delicious. I do wish they would disclose on the menu that they only put half a slice of bacon on the whole burger.

Even if the station itself is closed, the outside displays and vehicles are always accessible, making it easy to wander around, snap photos, and pose beside some true Americana at any hour of the day. The site is a restored Kan-O-Tex gas station, and it has become a playful landmark thanks to its alleged inspiration for characters in Pixar's Cars movie. Parked out front are classic fire trucks and other vintage vehicles that immediately transport you back to the heyday of the Mother Road. Seat yourself, a waitress quickly stopped by with menus and took a drink order. The menu is pretty big and includes breakfast and a kids menu. I ordered hot tea and am so happy to have received a cup of tea with a pot of tea back-up! Yes, all the tea please. The lemons on the side added to my tea joy. It's the small things. My SO ordered himself an open faced roastbeef sandwich. This is shredded roast on top of a sweet roll smothered in gravy with a side of mashed potato. He certainly ate it like it was tasty. (I did confirm - it is tasty.) I went with an a la carte breakfast of two eggs and one pancake. The pancake had a slightly sweet taste and is fluffy. The eggs were cooked perfectly 'over easy'. You can tell they are cooked as eggs should be over a low heat - no scorch marks on the outer edge. Bathrooms are in the back left corner and are cleanest where it matters most. Diaper station in the ladies room. During our visit many of the guests knew each other and chatted amongst themselves. All the staff we came in contact with were friendly. They kept a close eye on all the guests making sure everyone had everything they needed. All together a good stop.

I had the ono Hawaiian burger that had two good size juicy delish hamburger patties, a pineapple ring and secret kahuna sauce that tasted sort of like a sweet bbq to me. Very good and very filling! Choices for sides we all chose the onion rings. Thin cut light tempura type breading, VERY GOOD! also very filling as you get a pile of them! I want to try other things so will definitely be back! They have Coke products which is a big plus for me and our family! My wife wasn't as hungry so she got three sliders HOWEVER, the sliders had double patties too so each slider was big! And also very tasty! I haven't tried the chicken sandwiches or the wings so I don't know how they are and I may not get to them either because the burger was SO good! I may keep trying the burgers when I return.

First of all, the bar height only tables are not conducive to bringing small kids to a restaurant. The adults were nervous trying to make sure they didn't fall off the bar height chairs. I had the burger with the egg on it. Loved everything about this burger. Both burger and egg cooked perfectly. Wife had the Hawaiian burger, which she thought was delicious. Brother-in-law had the burger with the mac and cheese with the mac and cheese on the side; he absolutely raved about the mac and cheese. For appetizers, we bought the pepperjack bites and the spicy green beans. The green beans were fabulous, although I would have enjoyed dipping them in a spicier ranch than regular ranch, although it was very good ranch. We all ordered the french fries and onion rings with our dishes. All of us agreed both the rings and the fries were on the greasy side. I think the greasiness of the fries is what gave my stomach some issues later. The bartender who took care of me paying the bill was very nice. Big, welcoming, friendly smile; pleasant attitude and communication. The service industry needs more people like this guy. Would definitely try this place again to try something else on their vast menu. Might have to not eat for about two days so I can try the double patty hamburger with the fried chicken in the middle of the sandwich. Or their fried peanut butter and jelly. Or wings with their multitude of flavors of sauces and spices.

There's a billiard parlor upstairs and a large-ish bar in the back (I didn't go into either but could see them when we came in). The main dining area ran through the middle of the building. Very casual but menu all over the place ($110 tomahawk steak or a $12 Reuben sandwich). Good service, very laid-back, not at all pretentious. I think it would make a good candidate for diners, drive-ins, and dives, but I'm not sure they have a signature dish? Clear all the food was fresh, not frozen. I got the catfish with fried okra and french fries. Best catfish I've had in years. And the okra and twice fried French fries were outstanding. Would definitely go back!

First I'll say that I had studied the menu posted on here and when we got there it has changed so I will post the updated menu. We started with the calamari. On the old menu it came with marinara, spinach and peppadew peppers. Sounded fantastic! New menu came with marinara and cherry peppers. Eh, not as exciting but we went ahead with it. What came out was so disappointing! There is a photo here on yelp of a ribeye steak with a basket of calamari in the background that looks really good. What we got was completely different. Pre-breaded frozen rings in a heavy, flavorless batter. They were greasy and there were no cherry peppers or garnish of any kind. The marinara was bleh and sweet. No amount of salt helped either the marinara or the calamari. The dish was in serious need of some acid to cut through all the grease, batter and sweet marinara so I asked for some lemon wedges. They were out of lemons. Next should have been the salad but it came out with the meal instead. That always irks me. Anyway I had gone with the wedge because photos of the house and caesar salads looked pretty boring. The wedge was delicious. A little bit more dressing would have been great but the blue cheese crumbles, jam and tomatoes were on point and the lettuce was crisp and refreshing. Then the entree. Old menu had a 16 oz ribeye for $40, now they offer a 14 oz for $50. Again, I went ahead with it. The farm-to-table beef was what brought us in. I ordered medium rare and felt like it was just barely there, maybe that was just tonight or maybe that's how they always do it, IDK. It was tender, juicy and had great beef flavor, the rancher that raised it did a great job. The cook? Not so much. It needed salt, in fact I don't think there was any seasoning on it at all from the kitchen. I'm a steak purist but a little salt and pepper go a long way and a pat of butter on top really sets it off. Some of the photos here on yelp show beautiful steaks with butter and chives on top. This was just steak. Excellent quality, poor execution. Now let's talk about the side dish. The menu said "roasted corn with bacon, onions, cream and parmesan". Sounds fantastic, right? I can see an image of it in my head and almost taste it! What I got though was absolutely gross and they should have been embarrassed to serve. I guess it was canned corn because frozen should have tasted fresher. It was NOT roasted. The kernels were tough and starchy like field corn, not sweet corn. There were no onions and no parmesan but it was floating in some milk or half and half, I couldn't tell which. Not cream. And it had some bacon in there which was what I picked out and ate because it was the only edible part of the dish. Last was dessert. I was dying to try the ooey gooey butter cake but alas, that was on the old menu, not this one. So we settled for carrot cake. It was a big serving and it tasted fine but it was just a standard bakery cake. It was garnished with whipped cream and caramel which I felt was out of place but hubby liked. The cream cheese frosting was good and there was lots of carrot and raisins in it. Overall the entire meal was just a big "miss" for both of us. Our server was nice and the rest of the staff as well. The place was nicely decorated and had a great deck out back. But when we heard farm-to-table beef I guess we envisioned more than grocery store frozen calamari, nasty corn and basic bakery cake. Even the steak although of excellent quality was lacking, due to under seasoning and under cooking it. The entire experience was just a big disappointment unfortunately. I hope it was an off night for them but we won't be back to find out.
