But the past year I've been checking out my very first tattoo ever, received almost 20 years ago at Andromeda on St. Mark's place, and seeing how much it's aged. I decided it was FINALLY time to do my first real tattoo...touch-up? Refresh? Re-work? Whatever it was, I decided to try Red Baron out for their ink, since my piercing went so well with them and everyone here is SO friendly (I've come back multiple times for check-ups and new helix jewelry). So I sent them a picture of my tired old "Magical Girl Sagittarian Arrow" and told them I was looking for someone to make it shine again. I was sent the pages of a few artists and I settled on Daisy, because she had a portfolio of tons of cute modern-looking anime and gamer stuff. The second I showed her a picture on my phone of the Key of Clow's wings, she immediately said "Cardcaptor Sakura," and I knew she was meant to be my artist :D Daisy was INCREDIBLY patient with me. We literally worked on the revamped design for an HOUR AND A HALF, as I sent her back to make changes at least 3-4 times, altering wing look, ribbon length, arrow style, my god, she was an angel. But the end result was gorgeous. She was awesome at explaining any limitations due to having to follow the original tattoo shape, and she also explained her technique of working on the more difficult spots (for the customer haha) first, to keep the pain threshold tolerable. And I surely felt it in the beginning when she started, but by the time we were midway through it was so much easier and I was shocked when she announced she was done! The actual execution of the tattoo was done in under an hour, less than the planning took! My dingy old arrow now had an INCREDIBLE makeover. Daisy was soo sweet and I HIGHLY recommend her. Expect to pay a premium price here, but I walked in knowing this beforehand. I don't play when it comes to my tattoos or any permanent piercing/jewelry on my body. So I'm willing to pay premium for safety and cleanliness, SKILL, freaking good talent, and peace of mind. I had no doubts I would be pleased with the outcome and my expectations were exceeded times TEN. Plus, this place has very good vibes, great lighting (no doom and gloom grim reaper aesthetic), and a big front window where you can people-watch as you're getting worked on. $150 for a Nose Piercing That Lasted 3 Weeks -- A Bargain I'll Never Forget I got a nose piercing at their Verse Bar event on June 21 and paid $150 (plus a generous tip) for what I assumed was quality jewelry. Silly me! Turns out, it was more like a rental -- because after just 3 weeks, the jewelry fell out of my nose on its own. No tug, no twist, no drama. Just... gone. Naturally, I contacted them right away, thinking they'd do the bare minimum and make things right. By the time I made it to their downtown location, my piercing had closed. They gave me a half-hearted "sorry," and when I politely asked if they could do anything else, the manager called the owner -- who very graciously offered me a 15% discount to redo the piercing. Because yes, obviously I'm dying to spend more money on something that didn't even last a month. Spoiler: I didn't take the offer. I'm disappointed, not delusional. So let me get this straight: I paid luxury salon prices for bargain-bin jewelry, lost the piercing in less time than a Netflix free trial, and was told I could pay again -- just slightly less this time. This was my second tattoo but it's in a much more visible location than my first, so I was a little nervous, but it turns out I had no reason to worry. Really great place. Simply put. I haven't had any tattoo work done in over 20 years and that was well outside of New York City - so I didn't really know the lay of the land when I started researching places online. A lot of sites recommended mostly celebrity tattoo artists and when I looked up the reviews for these places there was a lot of mixed emotions and comments of being poorly treated etc. So I looked for places that just had good reviews and RBI kept coming up. And for good reason, too. I reached out via email to ask for a consultation and provide details for a small letter tattoo that means a lot to me personally and I got a quick response from Adam and we quickly figured out an appointment. I came in for the appointment and everything was clean, easy-going, and everyone was super helpful from the get-go. I was tattoo'd by Dave who has totally amazing start to finish. He took time to go over the design with me and was helpful in determining the right sizing and placement. Very considerate of making sure I knew how it would lay as it was on the wrist so would move and twist a lot. But also very flexible to make sure I got the tattoo I wanted. Everything went seamlessly and quickly, but I did not feel rushed in anyway. Real Goldilocks situation in my opinion. Very relaxed place and you could tell it was a team that worked well together as they were all very interested in what each other was working on and there was just a really balanced harmony to the place. As I said, I wasn't looking for some hotshot tattoo artist to the stars. I chose RBI for my piercing because they are listed with the Association of Professional Piercers, and I'm very glad I did. I have nothing but awesome things to say about Xavier who explained the process clearly, and pointing out the deviation in my septum that could present a challenge (and yes - I suspected my anatomy might be a problem beforehand). He warned me that it may take more than one attempt to get it right, and he was correct. I've known people who were sent home from shops with misaligned piercings, and it was very worth it to go to a shop where the piercer wasn't willing to settle for "good enough," but wanted to get it right. I have had piercings and a tattoo cover-up at RBI (both great experiences)- this review is for my tattoo with the artist Shamil. I had a 20 year old Celtic cross and skulls that I wanted to cover up, and I was not very excited or committed to a new design (just wanted the old one gone). Shamil got me as excited as if it were my very first tattoo, by listening to my concerns, making awesome size/color/design suggestions and being completely transparent about the process (time, cost, pain factor, etc.). I was really concerned about the size of the cover up, and Shamil made sure (I don't know how!) to keep it to the size I wanted while covering the areas I needed covered. During the tattoo, I had to answer a call, get a snack and stop because I am a wimp ;) Shamil was incredibly understanding and never made me feel ashamed, even when I was squirming at the end. The tattoo is everything I could have hoped for. Excellent coverage, clean lines, gorgeous shading and brilliant color. I know opinions are subjective but Shamil did exactly what we discussed and even more. After making several calls to Red Baron Ink and speaking with the manager, Adam, who was very kind and answered my all of my questions patiently and satisfactorily, I decided to go there to have three ear piercings (two lobes and one helix) repierced. During the short wait (I was a walk-in), I discussed my options and their jewelry selection with Adam (with his continued kindness).  When Xavier greeted me and walked me back to his work area, I noticed that it was very clean, orderly, and brightly lit (a theme that resonated in the shop). I came from the DC area to RBI because I was having a big issue with an artist in trying to complete a half-sleeve back home. I was already on edge and nervous about getting the piece done because it had big emotional resonance to me. I emailed RBI, explained my situation, and they connected me to Daisy Lu. Made an appointment with Niiru for my first tattoo and I can't be more happy about how the experience went for me! I was really nervous about the whole process, but he was really professional and you can tell he's very serious about the work he does. I went with Niiru because he does anime style tattoos, a style that has become more prevalent in these past few years. I wanted something to a work done by artist MilkySyrup and he translated it to work for a tattoo and made it totally unique. He's not very heavy handed either, so if you're sensitive, I can say that it only got somewhat painful during the latter half of the 2 and a half hour experience as my skin was getting tender and sensitive. The after care advice Niiru gave out worked phenomenally as well. They advise using Dial Liquid Gold soap, Aquaphor for the first three days, and moving on to Lubriderm afterwards. Not once did my tattoo burn or itch with this method. And I can say it's healed pretty phenomenally so far even though it's only been a week from my appointment. Tl;dr Niiru is a great artist for your anime style tattoos and I can't wait to go back for my second already! read more

Her work (showcased on her Instagram) is so spectacular and delicate and it was PERFECT for the intricate Rene Magritte-inspired design that I wanted. I sent her the original artwork and she crafted up the stencil herself for me. She was very patient, and in the end it came out beautifully. I couldn't be happier with my new piece. Now it's nearly healed up and I'm still in love. Pictured is the centerpiece of my armband (The Lovers II by Magritte). The whole band goes all the way around with a few other works of course. Walked in -- nothing makes a walk in easier than a tattoo shop that says "appointment only" on their instagram -- and came based on the 4.8 on google reviews. Explained what I wanted and showed the pics to the guy at the front desk. He quoted me a price that was very expensive but not quite a rip off -- $300 for 9 words of script is not fun, but I paid it instead of trying to negotiate it, and in return I declared myself entitled to and expected mastery, perfection, and exquisitely anal attention to detail, my wishes, my concerns, etc -- and I got it. Adrienne was my tattooist (is that the right word) and it was a simple line script made for me by a singer named Noah Kahan who has bad handwriting and great lyrics. Adrienne had the patience to go over the tattoo very anally and analytically because a script tattoo is far below her skill level and yet anything can go wrong. She printed out three sizes and we analyzed them on the arm before choosing one. The first push down of the paper was slightly slanted and we erased it and did it again. She knocked it out while making small talk and distracting me from what a chickenshit I am about getting tattoos. We then pulled up the original graphic and she did a detailed inspection of the tattoo to make sure it was exactly right. She spent more time preparing for the tattoo than on the tattoo itself, and that's the "measure twice, cut once" mastery I want from someone putting permanent markings on my body. While I am far from a tattoo expert, Adrienne should get all of the "someone's handwriting being etched onto my body" business she can tolerate, and if you're doing something small and simple, ignore the appointment only sign. Lube your wallet, but find in this store the assurance you need that the thing that will sit on your body for the rest of your life will be done professionally, honorably, patiently, analytically, correctly, with art, and with empathy for your anxiety about getting it correct. read more

Came here for some nose jewelry and opted to put it in myself since I've had that piercing for a while and often change my jewelry. Unfortunately the rod I was sized for was too small, which isn't as big of an issue since I opted out of the extra help. I came back to the shop the next day and the piercer wasn't there, so I was told to come back the next day and that he'd be there from 12-6. I came back the next day right at 5 and asked for the piercer and was told he was booked for the rest of the day. I explained that I'd just buy a longer rod since that was the issue and the receptionist wouldn't let me purchase it without the piercer's help. I told him I came three days in a row and only needed a replacement, and I was told to come back again the next day and make an appointment. What felt weird is that the piercer was sitting right there during this conversation and I felt like I was being a burden. I also wasn't aware that I should make an appointment to even buy a new rod until my third visit and it left a bad taste.
