We used to LOVE this place, when it was at the old location. The food has changed, and it's no longer as good. The California roll tasted so sweet, like they added sugar to the rice, and spicy tuna had pickled ginger and it was very over-powering. They should go back to their old recipes! The new location is nice and clean, and the staff was good for us, and our main server was very chipper and helpful. I go to this place almost every week and each time it's been amazing. The food is reasonably priced and it tastes consistently good. My favorite meal has to be the General Tso's Chicken with the Ichi Roll. These have always tasted the same, which is delicious. The service is usually quick, and I'd say most items have a good serving size to price ratio. Would recommend to anyone living in or visiting Moscow. read more

Went to New location in Moscow at the mall. We ordered two sushi rolls and one spring roll appetizer. It took an hour and a half to get our food. Two hours total. Server never filled our drink once. We saw a server walk out mid shift and quit. Owners cannot handle the new location and lack resturant management skills. Usually its either the kitchens fault or the waitstaff but both seemed equally inadequate. Serious language barrier between owners and staff. read more

this is another place that was touted as being really good and i disagree. it's pretty sketch looking, both inside and outside. it's rundown and doesn't look like the cleanest place in the world. i'm not that fancy pants but bbq joints can get away with this look, but i'm not as forgiving where you serve raw fish. it's pretty large inside and there is a small parking lot in the back. if you park back there, you end up walking down an icky hallway past the bathrooms, which is the most appetizing way to start your meal. the dining rooms are set up like a cafeteria. we all ordered the bento boxes and they were huge! lots to eat. however, the rice preparation was poor. grainy and clumpy and all dried out. i did have some nigiri and while the fish was okay, the rice was sub part. there's a large menu to select from, but i'm not entirely convinced i will be back. read more

I am a fan of red bento. I normally get a bento box, as I like it because it is a bunch of "snacks." I normally get the teriyaki chicken and the California roll. The California roll is pretty typical. They make it fresh, so it better than gas station sushi but not better than many sushi restaurants I have been. The chicken teriyaki is chicken thigh and is always tasty. Bento box comes with miso soup, rice, salad and a couple of pot stickers. Alot of food for the money. I normally come here for the teriyaki. It is not my first choice for Chinese or Thai, which the also serve on their massive menu. read more

This is really the only good place to eat if you want Japanese food/sushi ect in the Moscow and Pullman area. The food is actually really good in my opinion but the serve is ridiculous. Food takes beyond forever. No joke I had to wait over an hour for 2 plates of food. The place had about 10 customers in it so it wasn't busy. And then another half hour for my check to come and I had to go up and ask for it. No waiter had been to my table in over 20 minutes to fill my water glass or to ask me if I needed anything. I finally had a chance to come back after my first visit shortly after they opened. I always intended to return after they got their feet under them, and by now -- 2 months after opening -- it sure seems they have. I went with the same person as I did in my original visit, and we got essentially the same things as we ordered in our original visit (we actually even sat at the same table, through luck of the draw). We arrived at 5:15, knowing that it would get busy later in the evening and wanting to give the service a fair shot under normal circumstances. It does seem like they have an entirely new waitstaff, complete with people who know how to circulate and work efficiently within their given range of duties. I know other reviewers have indicated here that those of us talking about service are idiots, but if I'm spending money, I want a dining experience and not just a plate of food placed on my table. I can cook. There's a reason I go out. Anyway, we were exceptionally pleased with our service and our food. We left, quite full, around 7 -- and it was already standing room only at that time. When seated, we immediately had soup and water, and our order was taken soon thereafter. We ordered and received tea in a timely fashion. We even got two salad treats we weren't expecting, and then our first course of rolls. After rolls, more tea and a big ol' sashimi platter. I was happy to drop the cash and the 20%+ tip, but more than that I am sincerely happy that their staff is working in a more positive fashion both for the restaurant itself and its patrons. My husband and I waited about 20 minutes to get a table and then were forgotten about once we sat down. The sushi was fine but the bulgogi (Korean marinated beef) was terrible. I don't think it had ever been marinated and that's kind of the point of bulgogi. It was so dry we had to ask for more sauce to try and get it down, it didn't help. Alright, so I just moved to Moscow from California. Back home, we take sushi very seriously. I'm a legitimate addict-- I HAVE to have sushi at least once a week probably. And in California, you get some bomb sushi. So one of my biggest worries about moving to Idaho was the lack of sushi to feed my habit. I was introduced to The Red Bento and went there for lunch one afternoon. It was a cute place, and the prices are pretty decent. I got a lunch special that had spicy tuna, california, and avocado rolls. The pieces were rather small and there seemed to be a massive amount of rice in comparison to the other stuff. Also, the rice fell off a lot, therefore encouraging me to make a 'rice mountain' after I was finished eating. But all in all? The sushi tasted pretty good. I want to go back and try some of the specialty rolls still, also. So The Red Bento definitely doesn't compare to anything in California, but I'd say it's enough to keep me here, not running back home from sushi withdrawls! read more

Great food. The sushi is the best on the Palouse. The salad and miso soup are killer. The Teriyaki dishes are solid. I'd order everything on this menu multiple times if I had the time. This is now one of the handful of restaurants in the Palouse truly worth going to and not merely "acceptable." And to top it all off, it's cheap! A giant serving of teriyaki chicken will only set you back $5, and a handful of rolls is under $20. Now to the service issue. Everyone has a good point. With a group of three, it took nearly two hours from being seated to paying for the check. But I attribute this to not having enough cooks to keep up with a consistently full restaurant, not to terrible waiters. If the chef in the back can teach someone how to take care of the hot stuff while he focuses on rolling sushi, they'll be set. And one other person noted that nowhere on the Palouse has great service. I disagree in that Red Door, the Breakfast Club and Nectar all have outstanding servers. But even at the places where the service isn't great, you don't have to wait half as long as you currently do here. But it's not their fault that they're way better than they expected. Give them some time. It'll get better. In the meantime, just go if you have the time to kill and want a killer meal. I will upgrade my stars to five as soon as a meal takes under an hour. read more

Nonetheless, I was pleasantly pleased by their great, fast, and super accommodating service. Finding Korean sashimi donburi (Hwe Dup Bab) on the menu was a nice surprise. I went to Red Bento 1 year ago and it was pretty good, They gave you several little dishes as sides for free. BUT I went there recently, I got a little mad at them. Me and my friends ordered food and the amount of the veggie and meat significantly less than before. We thought they forgot about the small side dishes. When we asked for only one kimchi, the waiter gave us a tiny tiny plate with few slices of nasty radish...I am an easy going girl, so everything its alright. because its just a snack. However, when we were paying for the food. We got charged by the nasty radish..$2.99 plus tax. REALLY?? you gave us the wrong thing and only 2-3 slices of it.and you charge us?? Pros: Extremely affordable even for a college student, conveniently close to downtown, delicious salad and (if you're a soup person) a decent miso soup upon sitting down, tasty Szechuan chicken and Bento Boxes, very generous portions.. Cons: A bit sketch, absolute abysmal parking unless you go in a very dead time of day, after you hopefully find a parking spot you get to walk down a narrow hallway by the bathrooms where you can see one of the cooks constantly running outside to smoke, and as far as food goes, hmm. They recently added a Thai menu and honestly they are overextending themselves. I had the Beef Pho, and it was the worst I have ever had. What were they thinking? The whole point is for thin slices of beef to cook in the hot broth as it is served. What their version tasted like was as if someone had cut off chunks of beef, cooked them until they were tough and then dumped them into the bowl. Awful. I was extremely disappointed and will never order Thai food from them again. Especially when they charge more for each Thai dish than the places who actually specialize in the food. I so badly want this restaurant to do well and be good but it just isn't. Pros: when I do get to order and then get the food I am usually not upset by the quality. I ordered a philly roll and California roll and they were both good. I also think the prices are generally reasonable. Cons: where to start. Atmosphere even in the new location leaves a lot to be desired. Dirty menus and the overwhelming smell of bleach greets you which is unappetizing to say the least. Servers are usually new and poorly trained and come off irritated, distracted and stressed. I imagine since this has been a consistent problem for years management is lacking but I have no real knowledge about it. The wait time at the new location is insane. I have eaten twice since it opened, one takeout experience and one dine in. The takeout time it was over an hour to get the food and it wasn't busy. The food was fine. The second time I attempted to eat in with my husband, 3 year old and one year old. We were sat right away and after 5 mins got asked if we wanted drinks. We didn't. So he left us with the menu. The restaurant was half full but there were at least 4 servers. I waited a half hour for the waiter to come take our order before my husband took our squirrelly son into the mall to get some energy out so he wouldn't make a scene. I waited another 25 minutes before I called it and just left. The waiter walked by several times but never came back to take my order. A few others got seated and ate and left in that time and a lot of people were in the same boat as us. Seeing as how my kids bedtime was in half an hour and we still needed to get food we were forced to leave. It would be great if they honed in their menu for a more authentic experience but we are in small town Idaho so people might lose their crap if they couldn't get sweet and sour chicken or something so I get it. Conclusion: owners, if you are reading this please invest in quality servers, spend the time to train them , treat them really well and find a way to clean your restaurant without dumping bleach on the floor. Maybe watch some kitchen nightmares or something. I want you to do well and a good sushi restaurant would make my list of things I do at least weekly if I could count on consistency. read more

Eh. For sushi in a small town, it was okay. I've had sushi at Tokyo Seoul and because of their amazing sushi, I was hoping that there was possibly another place for good sushi for a cheaper price. Wrong. Although their sushi prices are cheaper than Tokyo Seoul, the exchange of price for quality is definitely not worth it. Their spicy tuna roll is SO spicy. It's as if all they did was toss cubes of raw tuna into sriracha, rolled it up into rice & nori, then topped it off with spicy mayo (sriracha and mayo). I had another dish... something like a spicy sushi lasagna. Whhooo! That was pretty dang good, I must say. However, there was so much flavor that I definitely got too overwhelmed & it needed to be shared. The sauce that it was topped with was definitely good, but a bit too creamy for my taste. Their chicken teriyaki combo bento was okay. The sauce was not too bad, I feel like it's pretty difficult to choose the wrong bottle of teriyaki sauce. I must compliment them on the variety of their bentos. Yum yum yum! The prices were decent & the place was very clean. I'm not sure if it was a busy day when I went, but the waters & waitresses definitely could care less if we had water or were enjoying our food. One thing that was really good were the various flavors of mochi ice cream & their green tea ice cream :) All in all, it was okay. But as soon as we sat down, customer service plummeted.. the waitress was rude, the food tasted awful, and brought us what they call miso soup without any spoons and looked at us like we were inconveniencing her when we asked for spoons. Plates were filthy, silverware was filthy, table was filthy. My husband had a fly in his water and we couldnt even ask for new water or our check after waiting for her to come to our table for at least 20 minutes because she was too busy flirting with her coworker. Of all the fish only the Salmon was fresh, the other two tuna tasted frozen and then thawed - that weird off taste that you know is anything but fresh. The service was non existent. I had to get up three times to ask for more ginger, water, tea etc. No excuse as there were only three other table seated, thus the two waiters had lots of time... some items ordered never came. Zero for service. For two we paid $38. I only recommend the salmon sushi (very good) there rest is sub-par. read more

I am a Sushi lover in Idaho. This can be challenging. Would Red Bento be my first choice if it was located in a larger city? Probably not. But for the area, it gets the job done. As far as quality and taste of the food - a solid 4 stars. I have never experienced the "heat lamp" type of food that was stated in a previous review. And no, it is not the same quality as it would be in Japan - but I feel like that might be a slightly unreasonable expectation. Even if you ARE from out of town. My sushi always tastes delicious and is well prepared. I look forward to going to Red Bento as often as I can! My only complaint is the lengthy wait to get my sushi fix. The problem is that when they get busy (which is quite often now that they've become so popular) the turn around time from ordering to eating can be very long. This wouldn't be SO bad if everyone at the table had to wait 45 minutes for their order. However, the food comes out at VERY different times. As in: my friend is ready to pay her bill and hit the road but I haven't even had a chance to use my chopsticks yet. Appetizers come out quickly, then the bento boxes and rice bowls, and lastly the coveted sushi. So, the non-sushi eaters at your table will be done way before you even get your food...and I would highly suggest getting an appetizer if you are hungry...BUT, it is worth the wait! read more

Others in the restaurant got their food long before us, even though we had gotten there long before them. It took them a while to come pick up our check (about 40 minutes) so we just ended up going to the front to pay, it'll definitely be a while until we visit again. Red Bento is everything you'd expect from a well run specialty restaurant on the Palouse. Service is prompt, the staff is friendly and the food is tasty. While not a Metropolis-level restaurant, you are not paying Metropolis-level prices either. What you get is delicious food in a nice atmosphere for a good price. Portions are excellent and this restaurant is one of my family's top choices when doing something special. The only reason it does not earn an automatic five star rating is timing of the food per table can be awkward as it can be as much as 5 minutes difference between each person getting their meals. read more

Ordered, Uni, Toro, Tai and sake niguri. They were out of Uni and Toro, I would be surprised if they ever actually have them. Rolls ordered, Spider, mixed veggie and Spicy Hawaiian. Rice was the worst I think I have ever had, over cooked, under seasoned and packed into a gluey mass. Niguri had tiny pieces of fish. But fish was good, no off flavors or textures. Rolls of course suffered from bad rice, but otherwise fair. Menu selection for rolls very much around cream cheese or deep fried rolls. Did I expect amazing sushi in Moscow, ID, no. Their service is terrible. They will lie to you and say that it is out of the ordinary that they are so busy and so slow, but that isn't the truth. Red bento was the first restaurant that I ate when I first moved here and I was a little disappointed in the Korean bipimbap dish I had. So, after a few years, I decided it was time to try the other side and go for the sushi in hopes they could redeem the perceptions I had. I tried a few lunch sushi rolls which included an avocado roll, a spicy tuna roll, and a crab roll. Overall, the flavors were okay and the ingredients appeared to be fresh. Sushi is usually very artistic in presentation and precise knife cuts are essential! Here not so much. The sushi was not rolled good enough and most fell apart while I was trying to eat them. Huge chunks along with inconsistent pieces of sushi made the presentation look clunky. 2.5 stars - I've experienced better. They also added a new Thai menu since last time. I'm not sure that I will be trying it as it seems they are spreading themselves too thin. read more

I had the katsu chicken. it was the worst katsu chicken I've had. it was almost paper thin chicken at times under the breading. plus it wasn't cooked evenly, I'd say overcooked, oily, panko falling off. The chicken also was chewy at times which is something I've never experienced with katsu chicken till now. I waited for some time before I was asked what I wanted to order and my water was not ever refilled. Seating happened quickly, but other than that there really isn't anything positive to say. The server seemed far more interested in visiting with co-workers and customers that he was acquainted with from the university. I waited 15 minutes for a spoon to eat the miso soup which was ice cold by then. I truly had the worst restaurant service I had had in years. I had ordered the tempura shrimp appetizer which appeared to be one shrimp cut in five long skinny strips. At the cost of $1.50 each, that was insane. When my dinner finally arrived, the edamame was cold, the beef teriyaki tasted like the beef had been sliced from bits of a shoe box and the lettuce in the salad had been placed on the plate with full leaf sheets of iceberg lettuce. It was ridiculous to try to eat. In a restaurant where you park in what is essentially an alley, come in a back hallway past the kitchen storage and both bathrooms with open doors before you ever get to the restaurant, they should be working double-time to make a better second impression that the first impression you have already been given from parking and getting as far as being seated. They really need to step it up if they want to impress the paying customer. read more
