So my girlfriend and I were en route to partake in luxury seals at a 7pm Bruins game. We called for a cab from Red Cab from Hyslop street in Brookline nearly fifty minutes prior to game time. The cab never came. The next night, we were set to go to our two year anniversary dinner. We called red cab AN HOUR IN ADVANCE, ON A WEDS.Cab never showed. Initially, I figured the cab was late, so we called the dispatcher. he said ten to twelve minutes. Fine. Fifteen minutes later, no cab. I call back again. He says ten to twelve minutes; now, after initially being polite, I was understandably perturbed at this point. I told him, "Buddy, don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. When's the guy getting here?' At this point, he launches into a screaming, profanity laden triade, "Don't talk to me like like I'm your f***ing dog you two-bit punk..." To which I exclaimed, A: If you saw me, (I made a living for many years as an MMA fighter/armed security/nightclub bouncer) I would wear you like a sock puppet, you loud-mouthed telephone tough guy. Second of all, you can eat a bowl of cock and choke on the last three, you lazy, lying, back-of-the-short-bus, high school drop-out-pathetic excuse for a dispatcher. That said, throughout the evening, while eating, the dispatcher kept calling back my cell, nine times over the course of four hours, to scream, berate, and curse at me, even calling my girlfriend's mother's house whereupon we departed, and doing the same to her. At one point, when I was completely fed up, I answered my phone & told him I'd call him back right after his mother finished fellating me, at which point he got so loud that parties at tables twenty feet away turned to see who was screaming out my phone so loudly. At that point, I'd had it, so after we finished desert, I drove to their dispatch not to far away to see how tough wanna-be Mr. T really was, with the hopes that I'd be so privileged as to be able to actually kick a field goal with his skull. . When I came in the door and confronted him, he ran like Usain Bolt out the back door, never to be seen again. The radio cackled with innumerable cabbies wondering where there next call was. And I couldn't help but notice the pornographic computer screen saver, a vat of petroleum jelly ON THE DESK, razor blade, "dusty" mirror, straw, and a smoldering marijuana roach in the man's office. It was bar none, the classiest office I have ever seen (if you worked peddling infant porn when you weren't to busy running your gonzo beasto-necrophelia clown porn empire.) That said, for future reference given the creepy deliverance-baby lovechild of Steve Buschemi & Ralphie May running the show there, I'd feel better getting A ride from a balding stranger with a mustache drving a brown, 1970's blacked out panel van with a dildo for a hood ornament & bondage apparatuses welded to the frame in Kabul, rather than deal with these mouthy numb skulls again. They're tactless, undependable, and rude beyond words. And if the dispatchers are that messed up on duty, one must wonder what qualifies their drivers as "sober" and/or safe. I wouldn't roll the dice on my life with that crew of misfit chimps. DO NOT EVER USE RED CAB EVER. They are without question, the worst, most unprofessional, unpunctual, rude, offensive, and disgusting cab company I have ever seen in all my worldly travels, not just in Boston. I live in Jamaica Plain now. And not the nice part with all the friendly lesbians, either - the scary part with Hispanic people, who are bilingual. That's why white people don't like Hispanic people, right? Because they're intimidated by their dual language mastery? Anyway, cabs are scared to come to my part of JP, which has been a significant problem for people who get drunk at my house. (Hey you!) When we first moved there, we had a few really unpleasant nights with people who couldn't leave our place because cabs flat out refused to come. They still come slow sometimes, so it's not ideal, but I can't complain too much about it since it's the best I've got. Two stars even though I generally take Red Cab all the time. The trick is you need to be desperate, you need to be in Brookline, and you need to NOT call ahead. Here's why. 1. Desperation: You're putting your life on the line here. They speed, they pass on the left, they slam on the breaks, they define Massachusetts driving. The plus side is that you certainly won't be late. 2. We found a Red Cab somewhere on the Boston Line and got in - funny story, Brookline cabs can't pick up in Boston. Oops! The cops pulled us over and the cab driver told us to lie. We lied for a minute before the cop was onto us and told us to get out or get arrested. Great. 3. If you call, you'll generally hear the answer of "WHAT?" and when you tell the cab the time you want, you should probably just say "now" and wait anywhere from 15 min - 2 hours, depending on the night. Cool. If you're around Brookline - head to Wash Square or Cleveland Circle or Reservoir - where they're usually stationed/parked. Oh and they're run by the same company as Bay State - so don't be surprised if you call the number for Bay State and get the same dispatcher. Yikes. read more

Want a cab that actually shows up? Not in the mood to be emotionally abused when you call back to inquire as to the whereabouts of the cab you called two hours ago? Don't call Red Cab. Saturday night. I had finished shopping to find myself in a freak thunderstorm, stranded in the rain with a cart full of groceries. I took the bus there and didn't live far. I had approximately $6 to my name, so my first call to Red Cab was to ask how much it would cost to go a little less than a mile. "Are you serious?!" Um, yeah...I don't take cabs often and I only have a few dollars. [Hangs up on me] I looked up some other cab companies but they didn't service my neighborhood (Roslindale). Reluctantly, I called Red Cab back. They asked for my address and said it would be about an hour. I don't know if that's a reasonable wait or not, but thankfully I had an iPod to keep me company as I whittled away the minutes sitting on a dry patch of concrete, watching the store close and the parking lot empty, car by car. 1:15 elapses. I call back and POLITELY ask where my cab is. "It's a Saturday night, lady! And our cabs are dispatched from downtown." Oh. You failed to mention that before. The dispatcher sent out another cab and said it wouldn't be longer than 15 minutes. 30 more minutes elapse, taking me to 1:45 total wait. This time, I call back and am understandably pissed. My words were civil but my tone was certainly less-than-pleased. WHERE. IS. THIS. FUCKING. CAB! Turns out they got my address wrong (80 instead of 800, obviously a typo on their part, not my misspeaking it) and that the cab had come and gone. They had my phone number; if they couldn't find me, why didn't they call? So, what, 1:45 plus an additional hour now that you have the right address?! "You ain't gon' get no cab with an attitude like that, bitch!" And again I heard the familiar sound of them slamming the phone down in my face. I finally gave up and pushed my cart a mile home in the pouring rain -- something I could have done two hours prior. I was thankful that the store was ghetto enough to not have those auto-lock devices on the wheels of their shopping carts. I'm not sure what I would have done otherwise. Sidenote: Further investigation revealed that the address they originally had for me doesn't even exist, so on top of it all, they straight up lied about having sent someone out to that location. Terrible service, terrible driver. Had to catch an early morning train so I called Red Cab the night before to reserve and the morning of to confirm. Requested a cab that took credit cards because I didn't have cash. The dispatcher stated would not be a problem b/c all the cabs take cards. I get picked up then dropped off at the train station, hand the guy the card only to be told he doesn't take cards. I told him that I specifically request a cab that took cards. I asked him to bring me to an ATM to which he responded "I can't help you". So didn't take my card and wouldn't bring me to an ATM? Call Red Cab in the taxi and was told "I'm not sure what I can do for you? What am I in the twilight zone? Then the guy begins to lecture me because of my frustration. Good points: The driver, David, was really friendly, and although he was 20 minutes late, when we got stuck behind a firetruck and were on a one way street, he reset the meter so I didn't have to pay the extra $2. So here's the thing with cabs in Boston. They suck. Never on time, price to high, rude drivers. The reason I enjoy Red Cab is that they are more consistently pleasant than not. I take Red Cab at least a few times a week. In fact, they are the only company I will call. They are on time 90% of the time, and if they are late, it is at most 10 minutes. Of course I have had a few less than pleasant rides, but they are always better than any other cab company I have used. One huge plus is that their drivers are friendly. Sometimes they may not have credit card machines, but as long as you have a debit card the drivers have always been happy to stop at an ATM. I give red cab a B overall, which is quite good compared to the D average of the cab companies in Boston. read more

This company has been more reliable for me than other cabs in/near Boston, but it's still a cab company which means there's bound to be some shadiness. It basically depends what driver you get. I will say though that from my experiences, their drivers have been friendly and didn't try to take the long way...at least as of today. ;) My only real complaint is that sometimes I've called and gotten a cab right away while other times I've waited an hour. While not necessarily the fastest, at least they are reliable. I tend to call 50 minutes before the train I need to take at Ruggles, I live in Brookline, so its a 10-15 minute ride. Always on a Sunday afternoon. I usually make it to Ruggles with 20 minutes to spare. The taxis tend to arrive in 10-20 minutes on average. The drivers are be friendly and courteous and good drivers. The cabs are clean and in good repair. One complain is that they tend not to have credit card machines, so I make sure that I always have cash on me. I highly recommend them if you live in Brookline and need to call a cab, but allow a little extra time just in case. read more

I've taken this cab twice, once I was w/ two friends and we picked it up in brighton, two of us were going to coolidge corner and the other was going home to dorchester, the cab driver tried to refuse to drive him to dorchester, it is illegal for a boston cab to pick someone up w/in the city of boston and to deny service to somewhere else in the city of boston, then he pulls this whole bullshit about "well we're a brookline cab," don't fucking pick people up in boston if you won't take them to other places in boston... then stay in brookline (he eventually brought to him to "horrible" dorchester after we threatened to call the police).... similar experience, i had a red cab coupon from the allston shaw's, so i called to have them pick me up in (in allston) and take me to the airport, he tacked on a charge for his tolls leaving the airport, (an extra six bucks), boston cabs can only charge an extra 2.20 for tolls for taxis to the airport .. this driver pulls the same "well we're a brookline cab" i don't care, your advertisement was in boston, you picked me up in boston, and you dropped me off in boston, don't pretend to be a boston cab but have your headquarters in brookline so you can skirt all local laws, stay in brookline or adjust to the laws of boston cabs if you are going to pick people up there... (and i'm sure he picked someone up at the aiport and charged even more inappropriate tolls) never again!! read more

If you value your life, or the life of those around you, I would highly recommend that you never use Red Cab. In my experience, the drivers are rude, disrespectful and unsafe. Even as a pedestrian or in my own car, I fear Red Cabs because I have found that even more than other taxi companies, Red Cabs are more likely to cut me off, change lanes without using a turn signal, and driver erratically in general. I am not kidding when I say that I would never advise anyone to take a Red Cab. I'm perpetually late, to everything. And occasionally, I'll try to make up for lollygagging and leaving late by opting for a cab instead of busses or trains to get me somewhere. So one morning, I'm running epically late to work, even by my standards, and decide to bite the bullet ad take a cab. I'd always had good experiences with Red Cab in the past (for example, having a driver who knew where my street was without asking directions or using a GPS. When was the last time you had that happen in Boston???), so I called them. The guy who answered told me they won't pick up in my area (Roxbury), despite the fact that their website says they serve all of Boston. Red Cab has brought me home several times from Brookline and Chestnut Hill with little to no scenic route situations. When calling for a cab from this company, you'll find the times of pick up to vary greatly, five minutes here or 10-20 minutes there. The quotes are fairly accurate. Hailing one of these cabs has gotten me home quickly and safely. Though it would be a big improvement to be able to pay with a credit card, it's hard to ask for more than a timely and safe ride. read more

If I could give them 0 stars, I would. I've tried to take this cab several times but was told that they do not accept credit cards. I used this cab service tonight from Reservoir station and discovered that they have taken cards for quite some time now. I was rudely and accusingly informed of this by my cab driver who was rude from the second I got into the cab until the second I payed. When I told him that I don't usually take this card due to the no card issue he accused me of lying. He didn't listen to my directions, missed turns and was an atrocious driver. While trying to pay with my card he yelled at me for swiping too early and tried to grab my credit card out of my hand. Will never, NEVER use this service again. Go with Bay State Taxi. I called the company the night before to book a morning cab ride to the airport, and specifically requested a cab that took credit cards, as it was a business trip. On the day of the trip the cab was 15 minutes late, I had to call the company to remind them that I had scheduled a pick up. Five minutes later I saw the driver go by my apartment - he had the wrong street number. When we got to the airport, I gave the driver my credit card, and he told me he preferred "ATM," meaning that I should go into the terminal, find a bank machine and give him cash. I insisted on using my credit card, and of course he couldn't get his credit card reader to work. So I had to go inside, find an ATM and get more cash. I've seen this routine before. The company claims to take cards, but the driver says he prefers cash. When you insist on using a card, he can't get the reader to work, and then you have to give him cash. I don't know who was at fault - the company or the driver - but this was a very frustrating way to start a long day of traveling, and I'm not using these guys again. They get 2 stars, since despite the lousy service I got there safely and didn't miss my flight. Plus, it's possible the driver is to blame, not the company. Red Cab, it's time to upgrade your credit card readers - and if it turns out that they're working fine, then upgrade some of the drivers. read more

I work at one of the busiest restaurants right across from Fenway Park. Had a customer ask me to call him a cab, which i do often for customers. I was so busy and scrambled fast and found this number. The guy was so rude on the phone. I finally ordered it for the customer and went on with my work day. I get a call from the dispatcher yelling at me because the guy isn't out there waiting for the cab. I explained to the dispatcher that i was very busy but told the customer to look for the white cab. The dispatcher went on to tell me how much common sense i didn't have because i wasn't babysitting this customer to make sure he got in his cab. I work for an international school in the Chestnut Hill area. It is common that we need a cab service to bring students from our dorms to a homestay, to the airport, or anything in between. On one particular day I needed to get a cab at 6 pm for a student. At around 1 I googled taxis in the Chestnut Hill area. I got some 1 800 number that connected me to a taxi. Ok, no big deal. I'm not familiar so I'll just pick any one at random. A woman answered and it started off like any normal dispatch call. It was difficult to hear and I'm not sure if it was my phone or hers. First she didn't hear the right address but no big deal - I work with ESL students - I know to double check every bit of info and make sure we're on the same page. So as I was trying to clarify the details of the transfer she asks a question that I apparently did not answer in the correct order. She interrupts me and says EXCUSE ME SIR I AXED YOU A QUESTION. So I kind of laugh at how absurd this is and I start again, speaking more clearly and trying to answer her question. Not sure how or why but *SLAM!* I get hung up on. I called back three times via the 1800 number. All three they let ring or picked up the phone and hung it up. How hard do I have to try to give you my business? At this point I didn't even know which company I was dealing with. I googled again and found Bay State Taxi - 617 566 5000. The guy was super nice and listed to every detail I needed to give him. I asked him which cab company I had probably been talking to and he said RED CAB. I even had to call back a couple times to ask about estimates and change the time. Awesome service. Thank you Red Cab for showing your colors from my very first and only interaction with you. You have cost yourself thousands of dollars in potential business from our hundreds of international students we enroll anually. I wrote down your competitor's number and distributed it throughout the office. I called from the part of JP that is referenced in another review. It's hard to hail a cab in that part of JP - the only way to get one is to call ahead. I called stating that I needed a cab to Logan immediately, and they said it would be 5-10 minutes. After 10 minutes, I called again and was told it would be another 5 minutes. The guy on the phone was grumpy and short with me - as though calling to make sure they had indeed dispatched my request is unheard of... I mean, they have a reputation, I don't think I was out of line. Another 5 minutes, and nothing... Still waiting. I called again, and again he told me 5 minutes. I asked if I should cancel the cab and try with another company. "They'll be there right away. Don't cancel." I think you see where this is going. I waited, I called again, and my friend in the dispatcher's office was even grumpier. He was noticeably annoyed and told me to just be patient... But, let me do the math. Initially, he said it would be 5-10, and I had been waiting, at this point, for 30 minutes in the rain, in front of my neighborhood bodega. I brought the wait time, the rain, and my desperation to get to my flight on time to his attention, and he told me to "calm down, he'll be there. Give him another minute." I didn't. By chance, a cab from another company passed in front of me, I hailed it, and I got to Logan in less time than I had already waited for Redcab. I DID call the company to let them know to cancel the dispatch request, and as soon as I said I was in another cab, I heard the guy on the other end of the line call out to someone in his office, "It's that b- on the line, the one who keeps calling... Yeah, she's in another cab. Cancelling. Yeah, I know, can you believe that." And then he returned to my to say "thanks" and hang up. Lovely. read more

I am never, ever taking Red Cab again. The drivers are aggressive. They attempt to intimidate passengers, particularly if they try to pay by credit card. And don't even try suggesting that they go a particular route! One decided to drive me around in a circle a few times the other day. Hate to pile on the bad reviews, but after taking Red Cab for a good half dozen times or more, I've never had a rather good experience. At least three times when I call asking for a ride to the airport a few hours ahead, they misplace my call or something, because I end up having to call again and then wait another half an hour, nearly missing my flight. They are overpriced, but then again, what cab company in Boston isn't? The drivers also rarely impress me. I switched to Veteran's Taxi and have had much better experiences. I got off the D line at Brookline Village. I asked the cab driver if he could take me and my sick 10 month old grandchild (who is also a cardiac patient) to Children's Hospital at 8:40 AM. He told me "No, there's too much traffic." What kind of ignorant driver says that???? Since when do they turn down business???? And when is not busy in Boston or Brookline at 8:40 AM during the week???? Apparently it is more important for them to yap on the phone than it is to take business. Called recently and was told cab would be there in 5-10 minutes. After 60 minutes and several frantic calls the taxi finally arrives (says he got lost). If the driver can't find major streets in Brookline maybe they shouldn't be a Brookline cab driver. He responded " a duh I know the building". I said well "OK" that's good. Then, I specifically asked him how much time I should give to get to my destination on the following Monday morning. He recommended 45 minutes to be safe. He said specifically to request the cab for an 8am pickup. This was a very important doctor appointment. I asked him if I should call in the morning or could/should I reserve the cab now. He recommended I reserve the cab which I did for an 8am pick up on Monday morning. At 8:10am on Monday I am waiting outside the building and no cab. So I call and get the same dispatcher who told me he had me down for an 8:50am pickup and insisted that it was we discussed. He then said he would send a cab and it would take 10-15 minutes. Fortunately, another cab -from Top Taxi -pulled in to drop a passenger off and was able to get me to my appointment on time. read more

The driver I got today did not know how to get from Coolidge Corner in Brookline to an address in Allston where I needed to pick up my car, which had been towed. He refused to call dispatch to find out how to get to said address, and suggested that I find another cab--which I did! It was a Bay State Cab. read more

Three times I've called Red Cab on a weeknight (Wednesday - around 10 pm) from my home in Roslindale to go to a friend's house in Brookline. Each time, they would say "10 minutes" and then never show up - even after repeated follow-up calls to check on the status of the ride. We waited more than an hour each time before giving up.
